Work in the church and tower coincide with the 400th anniversary of the first meeting of the General Assembly on the site.
It was there in the chancel that Gov. George Yeardley, his four councilors and 22 burgesses chosen by white, male inhabitants of the colony met July 30, 1619, in the first meeting of a representative legislative government in North America.

Let’s be honest, if Donny came out next year and declared that a “national emergency” meant we couldn’t hold elections and he’d have to stay in power “for the duration,” there would be a sizable chunk of our voting age population who would welcome such an announcement. Along with a lot of Republicans on Capital Hill going “Well, you know, I’m concerned, but…”
Quick throwback to the last thread, regarding the conserv-o-sphere saying solar panels don’t work in cold weather: we just had our best production day since the panels were installed.
Gavin de Becker, the Amazon chief’s longtime personal security consultant and the point person for the investigation, confirmed to The Daily Beast on Wednesday that his probe has scrutinized Michael Sanchez, the brother of Bezos mistress Lauren Sanchez and a personal and business associate of Trumpworld figures including Roger Stone, Carter Page, and Scottie Nell Hughes.
…
Stone confirmed his association with Sanchez in text messages with The Daily Beast on Wednesday evening. “I do know Michael Sanchez—very good guy,” he wrote. Stone proceeded to deny that he hacked Bezos’ phone. When The Daily Beast pointed out that it had never suggested or asked if he had, Stone replied, “You are busted. You are not a journalist. No one believes anything you write.”
According to documents reviewed by The Daily Beast, Stone and Sanchez were in touch about the National Enquirer story in the days after it ran—and in the days before Stone was arrested by the FBI and charged with seven criminal counts related to the federal investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election….

People freaked out when surveyors from the Army Corps of Engineers went through and basically cut down swathes of brush at the National Butterfly Center in Mission, Texas to lay down where the border wall would go through back in mid-2017. A lot of damage was done and locals were Not Happy. I went to college with a couple of prominent people in Mission. I’m thinking all hell will break loose if the Trump admin tries to go in by force and take the land for the wall. I think there could be a LOT of local pushback. Virtually all of the border land east of El Paso is privately owned and some of it has been in some families since before Texas became a state.

That would be a political nightmare for the GOP: A farmer or rancher being injured by Army troops sent in to seize land for a barrier wall on Trump’s orders. At this point, even his own wingnut base would struggle to support him blindly.

to be fair considering the amount of dirty fingers in dirty pies, it does seem to be that Mueller is slowly walking The Pattern to reach the inner circle, so I do wonder who else is out there on the “fringe” that has some of the insight that Mueller wants to nail down…
Priebus perhaps?
With all of the Stone ties to dirty shit that the GOP has pulled over the last 40 years, who else is now exposed over in GOP leadership?
Does Mueller have enough on Mitch to pull him off as the GOP shieldmaiden allowing the Dems to kick down the doors with articles of impeachment for the entire rotten gang? Because if Mitchy goes, it’ll be every GOP senator for him/herself and I gotta believe that the rot goes thru at least McConnell, Cornym, Cruz, Graham, Grassley and Hatch and perhaps even farther down (Cotton, Tilis, Ernst?), at this point I have a hard time believing no one from their side isn’t dirty, hell the Feds are already writing up McSally (who was appointed) for violating campaign finance law for an election that she lost….

I wouldn’t count on that. McConnell is probably smart enough to go just to the edge of legality, but not over. I wouldn’t be surprised if he escaped entirely.
re: #42 gwangung
possible that Mitch escapes, he’s been in business for quite some time, but he does have some Russian money in his closet (I’ve read multiple of millions) and those GOP campaigns did have to get some guidance from someone in the GOP to point them in the proper direction and distribute the money where it was needed most. Not to mention the fact that when Obama wanted to go public, Mitch shut him down and MADE it political and partisan, gotta believe that there some smoke, if not incandescent fire, there… but then again, it may be something deeper in the onion to be peeled.
Just thought of this after reviewing Rachel tonight…What if one of those sealed indictments is Wayne LaPierre?

Chicago sucks in the winter, especially because of the wind. But the coldest night for plain temperature I ever spent was in Mad-Wis, way back in the young-young day. It was 35 below, and I was delivering pizzas. The Jeeps we drove (WWII Jeeps, not Cherokees or anything like that) had warming ovens for the pies, but even so, at that temp you had to move fast between vehicle and customer door to keep the pizza from going ice cold. Still, the 35 below isn’t the only reason I remember that night: At my last stop on the run, I jumped out and grabbed the order and started for the house—and saw a freakin badger huddled right against the door, I guess trying to get some warmth from the inside. A wild damn badger, only one I ever saw in Wisconsin. I wasn’t about to go up and ring the doorbell, and this was way before cell phones were even a gleam in the eye of the maddest nerds, so I drove back to the shop and had the manager call the customer, who said forget the pie and that he hoped the badger would be gone before he had to go to work the next day.
P.S. Either this comment or the one before I believe was my two thousandth on LGF. Not so very many over the course of nine years or so, and most of them no more profound than this one, but I can’t think of anybody I’d rather have sat on the porch and talked with than all of you all. Thanks.

Except unlike Hitler, Trump has no interest in global domination or even invading neighboring nations. His focus is on enriching himself and being the constant center of attention. He may have used Hitler’s speeches as a guidebook to his campaign, but he isn’t propelled by some demonic vision of the world.

Maybe. Certainly he’s a megalomaniac who also wants to be an actual multibillionaire, but what his secret desires about domination and invasion of, say, Mexico, are I have no idea. As for whether he has a “demonic vision of the world,” I can only say that his continual portrayal of Latin American and Middle Eastern immigrants as rapists, terrorists, murderers, sex traffickers, and general scourges of The American Way remind me very much of Hitler’s demonizing of Jews and other supposed untermenschen.

FBI internal documents come to the defense of the KKK claiming they are victims?????
The FBI opened a “domestic terrorism” investigation into a civil rights group in California, labeling the activists “extremists” after they protested against neo-Nazis in 2016, new documents reveal.
Federal authorities ran a surveillance operation on By Any Means Necessary (Bamn), spying on the leftist group’s movements in an inquiry that came after one of Bamn’s members was stabbed at the white supremacist rally, according to documents obtained by the Guardian. The FBI’s Bamn files reveal:
The FBI investigated Bamn for potential “conspiracy” against the “rights” of the “Ku Klux Klan” and white supremacists.
The FBI considered the KKK as victims and the leftist protesters as potential terror threats, and downplayed the threats of the Klan, writing: “The KKK consisted of members that some perceived to be supportive of a white supremacist agenda.”
The FBI’s monitoring included in-person surveillance, and the agency cited Bamn’s advocacy against “rape and sexual assault” and “police brutality” as evidence in the terrorism inquiry.
The FBI’s 46-page report on Bamn, obtained by the government transparency non-profit Property of the People through a records request, presented an “astonishing” description of the KKK, said Mike German, a former FBI agent and far-right expert who reviewed the documents for the Guardian.

Nope. There was a little snow a couple of days ago, and it didn’t lie. The past couple of days have been mainly very cold and dry. At least, that’s been the case in Glasgow.
Good Morning from NoHo. Did This come up ? There’s a Huge Cavity Under Antarctica’s Most Endangered Glacier
The gaping hole in the ice has a footprint two-thirds the size of Manhattan and is tall enough to fit the Statue of Liberty three times over. In other words, no dentist is fixing this. Instead, it could potentially spell doom for not just Manhattan but other coastal areas by speeding along the destruction of Thwaites, pushing more land ice into the sea.
Thwaites Glacier is located in West Antarctica, an area that is facing what could be runaway melt owing to geography and inescapable heat. The bedrock under Thwaites and other glaciers in the region slopes downward further inland, allowing that warm water to rot out the glaciers from underneath. The region is the fastest melting part of Antarctica, and losing the land ice could lead to more than 10 feet of sea level rise.
The discovery of cavity beneath Thwaites Glacier along with a number of other disconcerting features offer a new wrinkle to the harrowing tale of West Antarctica. Scientists used a combination of ice-penetrating radar flown on NASA planes and European satellite data to capture what’s going on. The measurements resolve fine-scale details of what happens where the ice meets the bedrock. Or, it turns out more accurately, where the ice doesn’t meet the bedrock.
So, here’s something to warm the cockles of your hearts.
U.S. to withdraw from nuclear arms control treaty with Russia, says Russian violations render the Cold War agreement moot
The United States will pull out of a nuclear arms control treaty with Russia, the Trump administration announced Friday, ending a cornerstone Cold War agreement on grounds that Russian violations render it moot. The demise of the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) treaty raises fears of a new nuclear arms race, although U.S. officials discount the risk.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the United States is suspending participation in the agreement, starting a six-month countdown to a final U.S. withdrawal. That leaves a slim chance that Russia could end missile programs widely seen as a violation, salvaging the treaty. The United States accuses Moscow of violating the agreement since 2014.
It’s hard to say who benefits more from this decision. I can guess, though.

Mixed messages on jobs this week. On Thursday, the report on initial unemployment claims unexpectedly increased to 253,000, the highest level in a year and a half. But today’s jobs report showed 304,000 jobs created in January. Keep in mind that January number could be substantially revised; December’s 312,000 jobs created was revised down 90,000 to only 222,000. 2018’s jobs gains at 2,674,000 was the best year of gains in the last three years. Average hourly earnings have increased 3.2% over the last year which is better but still not at the level one would expect if we were actually at full employment. The unemployment rate ticked up to 4%, indicating that more people are looking for jobs, which is a good sign. bls.gov

Russian moms, too. The Chinese “birth tourism” scheme has been going on for several years now. Families plan way ahead, and figure when the kid turns 18, they can apply for US citizenship and a passport, and eventually bring their family over. It does create citizenship problems in China, but generally these are wealthy people, so they can smooth over difficulties with suitable application of yuan.

The problem with birthright citizenship is it can’t be fully monetized for the benefit of the wealthy. When you have to buy a $1 million condo to become a citizen then opposition to immigration will disappear.

Everything that’s been said about the FBI’s history with respect to the KKK (and the other white supremacist groups) is correct… but it was people in the “violent penumbra” of the Antifa movement who did $500,000 worth of damage (plus bodily harm) when they showed up to protest Milo on the Berkeley campus. That wasn’t the only such incident either. Keeping an eye on them AS WELL doesn’t strike me as a bad idea.

I also want to mention just how important it is for people at the margins of the economy for job growth to continue, people the bankers at the Fed rarely think about in their obsession with squashing even the possibility of the inflation rate exceeding 2% (which is suppose to just be a goal anyway, not a hard ceiling). Unemployment among high school graduates and African-Americans has dropped significantly in the last year, and the disabled are getting more job opportunities, so Trump is actually right that the Fed doesn’t need to be in a rush to raise interest rates. Unfortunately Trump is such a moron he is reportedly considering the appointment of Herman Cain, who is a hard money guy, to the Board of Governors.

It’s a two-edged sword. Vancouver, BC, has had an influx of wealthy Chinese with money to spend on real estate, and RE prices have skyrocketed to the point where locals can’t afford to rent or own in most of the desirable locations in the city.
Vancouver responded by raising property taxes, which apparently is driving Chinese buyers to Vancouver, WA, and Montreal.

Which, at least in the US, indicates a city needs to loosen up its zoning laws to allow more home construction. California’s new governor is working on proposals to try to make denser building possible to alleviate its housing crisis.

As an aside, I watched the documentary Get Me Roger Stone, part of which concerned how, in order to destroy the Reform Party, Roger first encouraged Pat Buchanan to run for its presidential nomination, then encouraged Trump to join the Reform party and flirt with a run, calling Pat Buchanan a racist (which of course he is). And that pretty much destroyed the Reform Party.

Ditto education. I’ve taught a lot of smart students in China, and many would like to study abroad, but their biggest obstacle (aside from parents wanting them to stay close) is the cost. Financial assistance for foreign students is almost non-existent, so it’s only the wealthy kids who can study abroad. Sadly, many of them only go because their parents see it as a way to build family prestige, and some of the kids just spend their university time abroad partying and hanging out only with other Chinese students. I hear about those slackers and think how I wish I could replace them with some of my students who would actually benefit from the time overseas.

It’s fuzzy, because the official status has changed as the British empire has receded. It actually started out as a Crown colony in 1713, but since 2002 it’s officially been a British overseas territory. It does have it’s own parliament, but it’s kind of a devolved parliament, and the head of state is the Queen, represented by a governor, just like in the old colonial days!

I think it would be bad education wise to not have some of the political junkies talking about someone like Pat Buchanan. He was in a lot of campaigns and with some staffs. So he does know how the insides of some unpopular presidents and campaigns, etc. work.

My trip to LA two weeks ago was the first time I’d ever been there when it rained - and it rained for three days!
Not gonna hold it against you, though. I understand that you need it, and I still love your beautiful city.

That last bit there is one that gives me pause, because as a former science teacher, I wonder if I really communicated the idea as well as I wanted to. Our department really tried to give our students a unified picture of science, that each subject worked from the same basic principles of scientific investigation. We tried to find texts that showed how science is done, too. But communicating those kind of abstract ideas to high school students is tough. Some get it. A lot don’t. Too much science education focuses on content and not much on process.

Take Louisville, KY, for example. Not a big city in terms of population, but quite diverse — in some sections of town. It’s still quite segregated by race and income level, but taken as a whole, it’s a bit like the UN.

I made one visit to the LA area, ummm, lots of decades ago. Visited friends that lived WAY up in the mountains, looking out over the Mojave Desert. They said they could see 200 miles, off to the northeast. And my husband, who had been there before, said that was right! Beautiful! So for our visit, it was totally socked in in fog. Couldn’t see to the end of their driveway. So I used my imagination, and it was really beautiful!
And driving up their road, we went over a bump. They told me, oh, that was the San Andreas Fault. I thought, boy, they live on the wrong side of that!!!
Good friends, good times.

I’m sure she does but that’s not what it or she is about. She’s a hateful person with or without MAGA.
“A Democratic co-sponsor of a controversial Virginia bill that would repeal restrictions on third-trimester abortions is apologizing to her constituents for supporting the legislation, saying she didn’t read the bill or know how far it went.
The backpedal comes as Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam is defending himself amid fierce criticism that he suggested a child could be killed after birth in remarks a day earlier about the same legislation. And Virginia Democratic Del. Kathy Tran, the primary sponsor, released a video Thursday standing by the bill.
But in an email to her constituents on Wednesday, Del. Dawn Adams of Richmond said she didn’t fully understand the bill when she signed on to it as a co-sponsor.
“By now you have heard about the abortion bill, or seen the video,” Adams said in the email. “I vaguely remember signing on to this, and I did this in solidarity with my colleague and as a symbolic gesture for a woman’s right to choose.”
Adams said she didn’t know what was in the legislation before adding her name to it. “I did not read a bill I agreed to co-patron and that wasn’t smart or typical. I will work harder and be better for it.”

Representative Tlaib is trying to schedule a delegation to visite the Palestinian area, rather than just go on the one that goes to Israel. There’s push buck on both sides (though I’m only going to copy the Democratic one):
House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Eliot Engel, D-N.Y., told Al-Monitor this week that he’s against a West Bank delegation.
“Instead of her talking about things, she’s new here, she ought to listen and learn and open her mind and then come to some conclusions,” Engel told Al-Monitor. “If you’re going to be close-minded and have your views, no one’s going to change her views. But I would hope that once you’re elected to Congress, you would at least care to see the other side of the coin.” — al-monitor.com…
I’m just thinking he’s kind of not hearing his own words, and the “wait your turn” isn’t going to go over very well.
Yo @RepEliotEngel, how are we ever going to obtain peace? I hope you’ll come with me on the trip to listen and learn. My sity (grandmother) will welcome you with an embrace & love. Please feel free to call me if you have anything to say. I am your colleague now.

Could be; that’s why they like him so much - he’s a reflection of them.
As I recall, it wasn’t all that long ago - during the shutdown - that one of supporters, a woman from somewhere I’ve forgotten, stated she was upset with Trump because “he’s not hurting the people he needs to be hurting”.
That says it all right there; that’s their mentality. Emotionally stunted, overgrown children who’ve never escaped their childhood fantasies of omnipotence.

That’s a shame. This will only strengthen the hands of the forced birthers. Abortion rights are no more controversial than any other medical right and we should stop treating abortions as icky. Let women make choices about their own bodies and let’s look at abortions as medical procedures.

The book was written, or “scribed,” by Helen Schucman, who claimed that it had been dictated to her word for word via “inner dictation” which came from Jesus.

My understanding of what the US pullout from the Intermediate Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF) means.
1. It directly threatens Europe, ie NATO Allies, with Russian nuclear power, while decoupling that threat from being also against the US.
2. Trump has essentially said that he is withdrawing the US pledge to defend Europe with our US nuclear umbrella. This means that Europe is even more vulnerable.
3. Russia is also supplying Europe with much of its winter heating natural gas.
4. Putin is effectively neutralizing our three generation alliance with Europe. Aka NATO.
5. Look for a further destabilizing of Europe and more of their governments going to right-wing authoritarian. If the Germans go that way, our position in Europe may be completely compromised.

There are at least four different bike rental companies here competing with one another, so there is a glut.
In Glasgow, the bikes are locked up at designated bike points, and users have “check out” with the app and unlock the bike at a point, and lock and “check in” at a point. I think the company, NextBike, has done bike rentals in other places before, so they might have had experience of the kind of problems you’re describing.

What if he gets tried as an adult?
Then it would be as transparent as any other case, but I wouldn’t think that vandalism would merit that. His parents may be looking at a pretty massive bill when the Temple’s insurance company sues them, however.
re: #275 Eclectic Cyborg
What if he gets tried as an adult?
If he does or not will tell us a lot:
1) If is is tried as a juvenile, he’s white, rich and has a good lawyer, possibly team. Private/parochial school is probable.
2) if he is tried as an adult, he’s none of the above, is a public school student and only has one highly overworked PD for an attorney.
Remember folks - in the US courts the quality of justice = the quality of your lawyer which is shown by how much money you have. Very little else matters in the end.

New: Lexington bishop says he’s been threatened with defamation suit over MAGA hat op-ed https://t.co/PhX9tytndc pic.twitter.com/fesN9c4U3G
— Lexington Herald-Leader (@heraldleader) February 1, 2019
A Catholic bishop says he has received “some pretty ugly stuff and a lot of support, too” since writing a column critical of Covington Catholic High School students for wearing “Make America Great Again” caps at the March for Life in Washington, D.C.
Bishop John Stowe of the Diocese of Lexington said he also has been threatened with a defamation lawsuit by attorneys for the family of the boy pictured prominently in the first viral video of a standoff between the students and a Native American protester near the Lincoln Memorial after the Jan. 18 march.
Stowe didn’t name student Nick Sandmann in his op-ed for the Lexington Herald-Leader and kentucky.com. But Sandmann’s parents have hired lawyers who say they plan to file “a multitude of civil lawsuits”.
Stowe wrote the column Jan. 23 after the boys were criticized by other Catholic leaders, including Bishop Roger Foys of the Diocese of Covington. Foys has since apologized for his quick condemnation of the students’ conduct and said a full investigation is under way.

LMPD arrests white male 17-year old for desecration and vandalism of Hindu temple https://t.co/zOymEbsyuR
— Joe Sonka 😐 (@joesonka) February 1, 2019
The Louisville Metro Police Department announced Friday that it has made an arrest related to the vandalism of a Hindu temple in Buechel earlier this week, which LMPD Chief Steve Conrad called a hate crime.
Detective Sgt. Russell Montfort said that a 17-year-old white male was charged with third-degree burglary and first-degree criminal mischief on Thursday afternoon. This juvenile confessed to the crime and was charged less than three hours after the detective received a tip that morning, Montfort said.
LMPS does not release the identity of those charged with crimes who are under the age of 18, but Montfort said that the juvenile was a student in Jefferson County Public Schools.

The DC metro area has had kiosk rentable bike (ours are red) for quite a while now. We also now have the park anywhere and use your phone to unlock, bikes. MD law states that bikes have equal rights to the road way, so they can take a whole lane. DC has many dedicated biking lanes with more being added all the time. Bicycles are great for metro areas. Good job, Ostrava.
Columbus has had CoGo bike sharing for a few years now. There are probably 50 bike stations around town.

Just a thought…
Well, if Europe pays up, I’m sure Trump will be willing to protect them again.
I do sort of think that is part of the Trump plan. Pay up or else.

Trump’s trying to claim vindication that Junior’s phone didn’t show calls to him after the Russia meeting.
So fucking what?
It implicates additional people who have ties to Russia and would benefit from doing deals, including another developer who is close to Trump and would profit from being cozy with Trump.
And Junior knew the tangerine toddler was in the building. All he’d have to do to talk to him would be to go upstairs and chat away.
This isn’t the vindication he was thinking it would be.
No one should be buying it. And it isn’t going to save Junior or anyone who hasn’t yet to be indicted in that meeting.
Everything else Trump is spewing is his usual bulkshit deflection. He’s claiming success on foreign policy (for Russia, not American, but his supporters no longer seem to know the difference).
Then again, his supporters also think that the Confederacy was a legit country, was worthy of celebration even to this day, and that we should have memorials and monuments to these folks who lost the war of southern insurrection.
It’s the same reactionary/regressive/revisionist bulkshit outlook. Say the lie enough times, and you get people believing.

You can’t respond to intermediate range weapons. That’s why the needed to be banned. Had Trump properly handled Russian violations, he wuold have imposed more sanctions.
I agree with you that the best way (from the US perspective) is to address INF violations beforehand by sanctions.
It seems to me that Trump has been saying that the US would not respond to intermediate range missiles if they are launched at Europe.
As I understand it, the US position by treaty, currently (what Trump is trying to change), is that if Intermediate range missiles are launched at us, or NATO, we _will_ respond. All the way up, and including, with nuclear weapons.
And, again, I agree, it is far easier to respond to intermediate range missiles before they are launched, or deployed.

Then there would be the question of exactly who they pay. And then the follow-up question of a bidding war between Europe and Russia. Sounds like a libertarian wet-dream.
But somehow, I suspect that Putin would cut the Gordian knot. And go directly to the Europeans. And their kneecaps. Cutting Trump out.

Agree. I think I left out that you can’t immediately respond to intermediate range weapons the same way you can with long range ones - MAD - thus preventing their use. There’s no good way to stop them our counter them early.
I think we all agree that Trump is seriously messing things up, and unlike his domestic crap, this can’t be reversed by justing having a new president.

FROM HISTORIAN MICHAEL BESCHLOSS IN A JUNE, 2014 NEW YORK TIMES ARTICLE:
Although Presidents Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson championed what became the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Robinson quit his executive job at Chock Full o’Nuts that spring to campaign for Gov. Nelson Rockefeller of New York, a Republican, explaining that “we must work for a two-party system, as far as the Negro is concerned.”
But Republicans nominated Barry Goldwater, who opposed the 1964 legislation as unconstitutional. When Rockefeller denounced political extremism at the party’s San Francisco convention, Robinson, a “special delegate,” shouted, “C’mon, Rocky!” As Robinson recalled, an Alabama delegate “turned on me menacingly” before “his wife grabbed his arm and turned him back.”
Spoiling for a fight, Jackie cried, “Turn him loose, lady, turn him loose!” He later wrote with uncharacteristic overstatement that on leaving San Francisco, “I had a better understanding of how it must have felt to be a Jew in Hitler’s Germany.”
That fall, Robinson joined the 94 percent of the African-American electorate that backed President Johnson. (Since then, the percentage of the black vote for Democratic presidential nominees has never dipped below the low 80s.) In 1968, furious over Nixon’s courtship of Senator Strom Thurmond of South Carolina, who had once led the segregationist “Dixiecrats,” Jackie backed the Democratic nominee, Hubert Humphrey.
