The redacted Mueller report is going to be more blacked out than Brett Kavanaugh at a college party
— Edward Hardy (@EdwardTHardy) April 18, 2019
It’s a tell when AG Barr is releasing his redacted report on Mueller’s findings, and Bob Mueller, the author of the report investigating Trump and Russia interference in US elections, isn’t there.

The fox news feed knows when to temporarily mute the sound:
“Trump was not cleared of any wrongdoing. In fact, he was so not innocent, he will not finish his term.”
I turned off the sound. I just can’t take the blatant crime in front of me.
Barr says that, thanks to Mueller, “we now know that the Russian operatives who perpetrated these schemes did not have the cooperation of President Trump or the Trump campaign.” (Caveat with all of these statements: we haven’t seen what the report does say.)
— Daniel Dale (@ddale8) April 18, 2019
I’m heading to the deck to burn a bowl and listen to the birds…….
No American knowingly assisted the Russians, adds Barr.
— Steve Herman (@W7VOA) April 18, 2019
Knowingly? So they unwittingly coordinated with Russia. Trump asked for Russia to help and his campaign met with Russians to do what exactly?
Bulkshit in Costco quantities is being spewed here, and no one should trust anything said until we see the full unredacted report.
This is all about spinning the narrative to favor Trump.
Nothing will be resolved by all of this.
And I now suspect that all this theatre is intentional, as duress and confusion is the best possible cover for crimes.
Barr is mostly paraphrasing page 2 of his March 24 letter right now. (So this part of the presser would not seem to be necessary for a press conference.)

re: #13 Backwoods_Sleuth

Your fucking boss denied that the Russians even interfered. You Mr. Barr have no credibility.
Is Rosenstein blinking in morse code yet?
So we’re getting Barr repeating the bulletpoints of his letter, but trying to explain them to us like we’re damned children.
re: #19 HappyWarrior
Barr is a disgrace.
He has a particular set of skills.
The narrative from anyone not Trump, Barr, or the GOP should be “This is useless. Where’s the whole report?”
Barr, paraphrasing, says Mueller found “no collusion” by any American with any of the Russian Internet Research Agency’s troll-disinformation effort.
— Daniel Dale (@ddale8) April 18, 2019
Basically Barr is defending his own damned letter.
And now we’re getting the portion of Barr’s speech that was written by the White House counsel.
Barr says that he and DAG Rosenstein “disagreed with some of the Special Counsel’s legal theories and felt that some of the episodes examined did not amount to obstruction as a matter of law,” but accepted Mueller’s legal framework in doing their analysis
— Zoe Tillman (@ZoeTillman) April 18, 2019
Barr: “Russian operatives who perpetuated these schemes did not have the cooperation of Trump or his campaign.”
Mueller called it “coordinated.”
Barr is the first one to use “cooperation.”— Christina Wilkie (@christinawilkie) April 18, 2019
Drink. And he just said it again. “Trump was frustrated and angered…but fully cooperated.”😂😂🤣 #ShillBarr https://t.co/I7UXCff9C8
— Laffy (@GottaLaff) April 18, 2019
Barr is repeating the expansive-sounding, but actually narrow claims he made in his letter: that Trump associates didn’t participate directly in the IRA and GRU conspiracies.

Barr says Trump took “no act” to deprive Mueller of the documents or witnesses he needed in his investigation. He says, of his no-obstruction decision, that there was good evidence showing Trump had “non-corrupt motives.”

Barr elaborates on yesterday’s filing in Roger Stone’s case — he says that he’ll allow a bipartisan group of congressional leaders and congressional committees to see a version of the report with all information *unredacted* EXCEPT for grand jury material

re: #36 Backwoods_Sleuth
“But your honor, I robbed the bank and killed the guard in order to pay my child’s medical bills.”
To me, Barr seems to be doing the equivalent of saying “Yeah he gave them a tip off about where the armored car would be but because he didn’t pull the gun on the driver, it means he didn’t do anything wrong.”
Nancy needs to put Barr’s impeachment on the table right now!
Rosenstein makes a weird side-eye look when Barr claims that Mueller was okay with Barr making the decision.

I think the two assistants are there to simply help shovel the BS that Barr is pouring out.
Barr getting a little touchy there. Yeah, he knows he is shoveling shit.
Keep on him press.
Oh look, the questions are over…that was rather fast.
I noted the very careful, lawyerly language Barr used to say the Trump campaign did not actively or knowingly participate in Russian hacking, which might well be true. He did not say, however, whether the Trump campaign knowingly failed to report such hacking efforts or meetings with Russians discussing such efforts to the FBI or CIA. IOW, the report still paints a pretty bad picture that the Trump campaign allowed the Russians to meddle in the election, with the understanding (perhaps) that such meddling would probably benefit the Trump campaign.
Trump’s hands are not clean of this, no matter how much parsing of the English language Barr does.
re: #45 Backwoods_Sleuth

Shorter Barr, I work for a man baby who doesn’t know how to deal with pressure.
Asked why Mueller isn’t here, given that it’s his report we’re discussing, Barr says, “No it’s not. It’s a report he did for me as the attorney general. He is required under the regulation to provide me with a confidential report. I’m here to discuss my response to that report.”
— Daniel Dale (@ddale8) April 18, 2019
Last question: Don’t you think it creates an appearance of impropriety to look like you’re spinning the report before the public gets to see it?
Barr: “No.”— Zoe Tillman (@ZoeTillman) April 18, 2019

re: #56 freetoken
So… all this ends with… more confusion.
That’s exactly what both Barr and Trump want. Confusion.

Truth is, Barr is doing what a personal lawyer should do - protect his client. Truth also is, that’s not his job. His job to represent the US Constitution and the people of the USA, which he is clearly failing at.
re: #20 Backwoods_Sleuth

Yes. Eyelids are spelling out “Trump cock holster.
Asked about his words that are “generous” to the president, Barr said, “The statements about his sincere beliefs are recognized in the report, that there was substantial evidence for that, so I’m not sure what your basis is for saying that I’m being generous to the president.”

Right, and Barr’s careful language during the presser suggests there is damaging stuff in that report, just not any clear evidence of deliberate cooperation between Trump and the Russians to hack the election. If we take the meaning of collusion = Trump told the Russians to hack the election, then yeah, he’s exonerated. Even two-bit mafiosi are smart enough not to have a clear link between themselves and a hit job.

I just realized that the ideal Russian ploy at this stage is over the next few month to reverse the polarity of their manipulation and to start supporting Sanders to win the nomination and election. They have pretty much compromised the GOP completely, so now time to play games with the other party and finish tearing the edifice down. And the Bernie-bro compliment will swallow this stuff wholeheartedly while I also suspect that the Sanders campaign will also be Trump-ish enough in trying to gain power to look the other way and take whatever they are given.

Precisely. Still keeping my powder dry. The presser won’t matter by even the nightly news shows. We’re way past that. There’s too much information already out and collated. He has no chance to primary Trump but I hope Weld can at least dent Trump by denying him unanimous renomination.
Didn’t we just do this a couple of weeks ago?
I’ll wager right now that Barr’s dog and pony show (with Rosenstein as the dog and the other dude as the pony) ain’t gonna move the needle. Just like last time.
If I were a true and honest Never Trumper, I’d put all my resources and influence behind Weld and then endorse the Dem nominee when Weld loses the nomination and then use the years after Trump loses to try to create something resembling an adequate conservative movement that isn’t Trump inspired.

this should be good…
I’ll pass on this. I can only hear NO COLLUSION so many times.
The Trump regime has gotten high off their own stash. They’re acting as if facts don’t matter, only the spin. “Alternative facts” and all. I don’t think it’ll hold up this time. Mueller’s report will be the primary text in black and white that they’ll get hammered on over and over again. I think they’ve trapped themselves because the report itself can only be so much worse than the “nothing to see here” claims of innocence.
Human nature comes into play. Tribal dynamics and such. It’s like a sports championship, or Mission Accomplished. Once you declare “game over” even your own side starts to wonder if you could’ve won bigger or spikes the ball. I think the couple of weeks of triumphalism from the MAGA tribe will have sapped their ability to handle what’s coming next - the real questions finally, based on and quoting the real report. Now the game actually begins.

Here’s my thought. I think most people know how they’re going to vote in 2020. Trump isn’t going to have a 9/11 moment where he gains the trust of people who may not have trusted him before then. People know how they feel about Trump and from what I can gather most people don’t like it and want to give him a second term. I think most of the Dems running can beat Trump but to me what needs to happen is not only to beat Trump but to ensure that we don’t get a 2024 or 2028 situation where amnesia sets in and the holier than thous that do exist on our side forget why we need a Dem executive in the first place.

My Facebook timeline tells me the closeted (and now some out-of-the-closet) bigots are still enamoured with Trump.
And even the non-troglodytes who are still clinging to the GOP (as in many of the so-called “purple” states like Iowa and Pennsylvania) do so because of local politics and that is not going to change quickly. To these folk, who may even admit that Trump is horrible on this or that aspect of being human, it is more important to not be a Democrat for some reason (often abortion.)
We need to defeat Trump, yes but we need to defeat the forces that made Trump possible. I don’t know what the next Dem president should do with Russia but I would do anything possible to weaken Putin’s presence where he’s grown stronger in the years since Trump took over. Precisely. Still keeping my powder dry. The presser won’t matter by even the nightly news shows. We’re way past that. There’s too much information already out and collated. The remaining real investigative journalists with platforms know what questions to ask. Mueller’s absence at the presser will matter because his first public testimony will be an enormous spectacle. Most Americans sadly couldn’t tell you who the Attorney General is.

Pretty much what I was going to say. The far left continues to believe deeply that the DNC is corrupted by “the establishment,” that Bernie would have won if Hillary had not “cheated,” and so her loss in 2016 was solely due to her being such a poor candidate.
For those who may not remember those immediate hours and days after Election Night ‘16, the far left was absolutely gleeful over the results because they believed it would be the “Come to Jesus” moment they’d been waiting for. That the DNC would see that “establishment” candidates like Hillary were losers and embrace Bernie’s style of “progressive” politics. Which is why when the initial questions about Russia’s involvement began, they joined the far right in asserting that it was “sour grapes” and that the whole “hoax” was an attempt by the Clinton campaign to make excuses.
The Mueller report says that the lies to Congress and to the special counsel from “several individuals affiliated with the Trump Campaign” “materially impaired the investigation of Russian election interference.”

I think it’s also that they don’t want to admit that their disappointment with Bernie not being the nominee allowed them to be used. No one likes to admit being maniuplated and the far left in this country was willfully or not manipulated by Russian propaganda to see HRC as being no different or even in some cases worse than Trump. The people who push it like Greenwald? I think Greenwald’s motive is financial and I think he has a genuine hatred for the liberal establishment. Why that is in specific, I don’t know but he’s not doing this for ideological reasons. He’s doing it for Glenn Greenwald reasons.

Exactly. And that’s something that every Democrat needs to bring up when this is discussed. Yeah we don’t know for sure whether Trump and his team actively conspired with the Russians but we do know that the Russians interfered in the election and guess what, Trump hasn’t acknowledged that once. And that definitely speaks to his credibility. IMO the reason why Mueller’s conclusions are incomplete is exactly because of the obstruction that even Barr acknowledges was done. The difference between my opinion and Barr’s is Barr believes it was okay for Trump to do what he did because he was upset and anyone who knows anything about anything knows that’s a load of shit.

Way too early (and/or too optimistic) to start talking about post-Trump politics (we should definitely wait til that chicken has hatched before starting discussing recipes) - but one thing that should be kept in mind is that dealing with Putin will be a lot easier than dealing with the domestic political forces Trumpism has summoned up from the swamps.
Reviving/revamping our nation’s foreign policy is probably much the easier part, IMO: all the next President has to do (whatever the actual policies entail) is refrain from conducting our relations with the ROW on Trump’s program of insults, resentments, grandstanding and cheapjack posturing. Amazing what a little positive PR might be able to accomplish…
But on the domestic side, I think that no matter what the next Administration may be able to accomplish (which may be a considerable lot - and positive), it will have to come at the cost of alienating (still more) that 27% crazy-factor “fringe”. Who sadly, will
still be with us - and even more pissed off at not having “God’s Anointed” in the WH….

Whether caused by Trump or not, that election was rigged in his favor. That is established fact.

Put simply, Congress must act on the obstruction actions, and move for impeachment and removal. That’s the conclusion of Mueller, and the only takeaway that matters. https://t.co/Xb5Fi5ctiP
— lawhawk (@lawhawk) April 18, 2019
There’s enough evidence in this report that Mueller says that it’s up to Congress to act.
That means that it’s up to Congress to impeach and consider removal. Let’s not dance around this. There are clear grounds for impeachment, and 10 acts of obstruction are 10 acts too many. One could argue that Mueller has lumped together multiple incidents to get to just 10, but even if you make that argument, Trump’s actions taken together constitute impeachable offenses (as I’ve long held).
Nothing in this report exonerates Trump in the slightest.
In fact, on the issue of conspiring with Russia, it couldn’t make definitive conclusions, but rather that Trump and his cronies were either too stupid or duped into benefiting from Russian interference? That’s damning with faint praise. You didn’t conspire because you were too stupid to realize what you’re doing? Ummm… conspiracy doesn’t work that way, but the obstruction as to what actually happened is the more easily proven path to impeachment.
So much about potential collusion with Russia - Trump Tower meeting, Wikileaks - is blacked out! This really is bullshit! pic.twitter.com/SphUU8DZF2

They’re authoritarians as well. If they have to obtain their power through less than honest means, well, the end justifies it.
That’s very true. See the blip about Sanders supporters contenting themselves with the idea that Bernie could win the nomination with only 30% of the vote despite the fact that they think HRC who got a higher percentage of the popular vote against Bernie than Obama did against HRC 11 years ago “robbed” Bernie. They’re very undemocratic and they’re definitely willing to use undemocratic and unscrupulous means to get their far left vision. IMO you lose your ability to complain about closed primaries when you support more caucuses and the shenanigans that the Sanders campaign pulled 3 years ago and now.
The problem is that Congress won’t do shit. The House might, but the GOP senate will jump on grenades for Trump until the bitter end.
Reading pages 5-7 and I’m seeing an entire conga line of meetings and willing cooperation between the campaign and Russian officials culminating in Flynn/Kislyak sanction talk. Combined with Trump’s loyalty to Russia, how can this not be a series of quid pro quos?

Right, I think the House would impeach him but I’d be shocked if you could get any Republican in the Senate to vote to convict let alone the number we need. There aren’t any Congressional Republicans anymore like the ones that existed in Watergate.

A stunning section. Mueller says that many Trump aides would not be charged with obstruction *because* they refused Trump’s orders to obstruct. The natural takeaway is Trump’s intent was to obstruct justice. Flies in the face of Barr’s claims. https://t.co/YNVCBOF68w

I will say this about her. Warren has a plan to actually do shit. I guess I shouldn’t worry about her becoming a lightening rod of hatred to the right since I think whoever we nominate will be that man or woman but I worry that she may already be that but who knows, that may be to her advantage. I’m glad she’s running. She’s a doer. That’s more than you can say about the guy on his fifth President in Congress who still acts like he’s this outsider. A few Freepers have noticed there’s some stuff in there that doesn’t sound good, but not to worry. The Mueller Report is basically the prosecutor’s side of the story so it’s bound to sound bad. That’s why Trump’s lawyers have been given access so they can come up with a rebuttal.

I’m actually pretty stunned that Barr even did the presser at this point.
It’s clear that the spin did not work. All he did was stick his head up above the barricades, and now everybody gets to take (metaphorical) shots.
He got one chance to spin this shit. And we get unlimited opportunities to spin it back.

re: #100 Feline Fearless Leader
I just realized that the ideal Russian ploy at this stage is over the next few month to reverse the polarity of their manipulation and to start supporting Sanders to win the nomination and election. They have pretty much compromised the GOP completely, so now time to play games with the other party and finish tearing the edifice down. And the Bernie-bro compliment will swallow this stuff wholeheartedly while I also suspect that the Sanders campaign will also be Trump-ish enough in trying to gain power to look the other way and take whatever they are given.
During his career, Sanders has been pro-Putin in his Senate votes. Look the other way? he would be actively encouraging this.
re: #306 Eclectic Cyborg
I’d be down with a Harris/Duckworth ticket.
Honestly, I think Duckworth would be better remaining a Senator.
Now a Harris/Baldwin ticket would be good.
re: #294 HappyWarrior
I don’t know if we’re less educated than the average country. The Brexit propaganda worked on the Brits and it’s worth nothing that unlike Brexit, more people (just not enough) people voted for Clinton over Trump. I think the Russians have discovered how to push people’s buttons. That’s the advantage of having a former spy as their commander. What I’m hoping is when we get rid of the Russian toady, we make Vlad’s life hell for him and he has to worry about retaining his own power rather than fucking around in our and our allies’ elections. And hopefully he’ll get his ass ousted.
The EC poisons everything; Hillary could have received 65% of the votes and still lost if they weren’t in the right states. It has nothing to do with receiving “enough” votes but enough states.
re: #371 jaunte
He convinced Chuck Todd that “this is a political win for the President.”
Chuck Todd is every bit as stupid and credulous as any rando Red Hat. Screw that guy.
- the investigation established multiple links between Trump campaign officials and individuals tied to the Russian government
- including Russian offers of assistance to the Campaign
- In some instances, the Campaign was receptive to the offer, while in other instances the Campaign officials shied away.
and yet zero times did any of these upright, patriotic ‘officials’ report anything to the FBI or anyone else.

I know. That’s exactly the problem with the system.
Speaking of indictments:
Richard Quinn Sr., a legendary S.C. Republican consultant was indicted Thursday by a state grand jury on charges of perjury and obstruction of justice…
Quinn, 74, has helped the careers of Republicans Gov. Henry McMaster, U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham and Attorney General Alan Wilson, to name a few well-known S.C. politicians.
Have we gotten to the Junior meeting with the Russkies at Trump Tower part of the report yet? And the lies to cover that up?
re: #373 William Lewis

There is no way an all-female ticket could win in modern America. A woman of color balanced by a traditional white male like Bennett would be very competitive.
As others have said, I think Mayor Pete might be aiming for Indiana governor and this race will definitely boost his profile.

Could Sarah Sammich be charged with obstruction, too?
- the president, directing his aides to do illegal things, is most likely in violation of the law
- even if the aides chose not to carry out his orders
- that seems to be the conclusion of ‘legal analysts’: the person issuing the illegal orders is guilty whether the orders are carried out or not.
- and once again, as I just said in 376, NOT ONE OF THEM TOLD ANYBODY and nobody quit on the spot.

He does seem to be a boy scout.
I heard someone the other day say he is perfect for women!
That made me cringe.
No, I am not. First, he is not qualified to leap from small city mayor to president. That he believes that he is speaks to me of narcissistic privileged white guy arrogance that I am sick to fucking death of. Yeah, admitted bias there.
Much more than that though, is not what he says but what he DID as mayor, his priorities. He did some (arguably) good stuff in revitalizing but much of it at the expense of poor POC, fining them thru code violations that cost them their homes.
His focus even now appears to be WWC, too much like Bernie, as evidenced not only by what he says frequently but by his interest in a Fox news town hall. Frankly, any Dem candidate who does this is disqualified to me. Too many people for too many years have spent thousands of hours of their time to diminish Fox destructive influence by going after its advertisers, successfully so, to see it all undone by Dems now. This is a flat-out okay to advertisers to return and a fuck you to dedicated Dems.
That’s a start.

That’s definitely fair especially about going from small town mayor to POTUS. I have to admit. It does bug me that he’s gotten tons of focus while Julian Castro who was mayor of a large city and was in charge of a cabinet department gets no attention. Yeah I do appreciate that. As I said, I like Mayor Pete but I understand allegro’s critique too. I just get tired of hearing about woe is the working class white especially the whtie working class white male. I hate to sound dismissive but those guys aren’t going back to us. They left the Democratic coalition first when Nixon race baited them and really started leaving when Reagan did it. And then they left even more when Trump did. I’d rather focus on maximizing our coalition and trying to bring in people who haven’t voted before either due to age, citizenship, and interest.

We will know soon enough. Certainly the Trumpers want to believe this is Story A where Trump is in the clear and Barr did his job as AG. But I suspect the reality is B because Trump knows that the Dems want Mueller to testify and I don’t think there’s anything Barr can do to prevent that.

i wasnt going for fishy as much as flawed EC
it’s identifying the right states to get to 270, with the least number of votes
i know that’s kind of obvious
i just wonder if it could get to 5m or even 10. and im guessing not
because if the EC is that close (270 or so) then the chances of the popular vote being so skewed doesnt seem likely
3m is a lot though those 3 states were tipped by painfully few votes

She can only be fired from her Press secretary job. She could be jailed for lying to Mueller. She told the truth to the correct people. What the press should do is go look up that day, and ask her the same questions again.
That reminds me Easter is coming up:
Hundreds of male Catholic devotees in the Philippines marked Maundy Thursday, a Christian holy day, with a bloody ritual that involves self-flagellating to honour the suffering of Jesus Christ on the cross.
The devotees, their faces covered with red or black cloth, walked along busy streets while beating their bodies with chains and whips.
The men prayed and laid on the ground as they were hit on the back with wooden paddles.
The Filipino devotees believe the painful ritual will help them atone for sins and allow them to ask for favours from God.
The ritual is often discouraged by Catholic Church officials.

Don’t have time now to look in detail but it’s theoretically easy to get 10+ million more votes — what if Hillary won by 80% in all states that she won — and she also won Pennsylvania and Michigan. It could be a landslide popular vote victory, while losing the electoral college.

While the EC was originally created in order to give Southern states more votes by counting non-voting Black slaves as 3/5 of a person, it currently functions by counting residents of sparsely populated non-coastal Western states as 5/3 of a person.
