We’re told that a kid at 16 1/2 shouldn’t be held accountable at 18 for being a racist fuckwit and that no one should ever pay consequences for slurs because ‘everyone does it’.

We’re told to our faces that places with migrants and refugees packed into rooms like sardines, no food, freezing conditions, routine neglect, etc. can’t be considered ‘concentration camps’ because it’s disrespectful to the Holocaust, when even Holocaust survivors and experts have been sounding the warning bells since before the Border ‘Crisis’.

We’re told that we have to respect the ‘elder statesmen’ of Senates past for being civil and compromising and to hold up avowed racists as proof that we need to compromise and work with the GOP that has told us, to our faces, that they’d rather stomp in our face than ever work with us, ever.

We’re told almost nothing bout the white supremacist attempted terrorist attacks that were thwarted only by good grace .

We’re told that Dems in Congress just aren’t legislating enough and are proving why everyone should hate them, when they’ve sent god knows how many bills to die at McConnell’s feet only to take the blame because Dems are always to blame for everything.

All the while Trump and his base continue to seemingly live consequence free lives, only haunted by the fact that there are too many brown people in this country and celebrating the possibility of changing that very soon by rampant sanctioned terror.

Oh, and we’re probably going to war soon because Bolton has power and influence again.

I want off this goddamn planet.

Said it before, but if we get to the point where we can make direct, unambiguous comparisons and parallels to the very conditions of the Holocaust, then we’re already too far gone. Isn’t that what “Never Again” is about, stopping things from getting that far?

Actually, the first concentration camps were established during the Boer war, and they didn’t involve forced labor either.

Goes further back than that, the first “reconcentration camps” popped up in Cuba during the Cuban Rebellion in 1897. And terms like “internment camp” and “detention camp” came about not because they were inherently different from “concentration camps,” but simply as a way to avoid the negative connotations that they acquired as a result of the Holocaust. Functionally, the “internment camps” the US ran were no different than the “concentration camps” run by the Reich prior to the war’s outbreak.

The two ships that were attacked left Saudi/UAR waters for the Strait of Hormuz.

Meanwhile, in Qatar, we have stationed the US Navy Sub Squadron Six. These are fast attack subs with the best sensors in the world. They cruise the Gulf and know *everything* that is going on. That is their job.

If the Iranians tried to insert fast boats and divers to attach limpet mines to those two ships, we would know well ahead of time. That’s their job, and they are the best in the world. The idea that the Iranians could do this is absurd.

But who could do it? Who has the weaponry to sabotage those ships before they left port on the Saudi side of the Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz?

Who really hates the Iranians to the point that they would try to blame the Iranians?

Maybe the same assholes who are perpetrating genocide in Yemen?

Could it be Our Friends the Saudis? Could it be the guy who chopped a Washington Post reporter to pieces because he called the heir apparent to the House of Saud out for being a tyrant? The Saudis had the weaponry. They had immediate access. Motive. Method. Opportunity.

Is it any wonder that European intelligence agencies are holding their powder?

Why hasn’t this been mentioned on Faux News?

If Joe wins the Primaries, I’ll happily vote for him, but I would prefer another candidate.

That’s just me. It’s not an ageist thing. It’s that I don’t want a “comfortable” candidate. I want a spitfire reformer who can actually get things done with control of the Senate and the House (which I think is doable, this cycle).

But not Bernie. Can’t abide him.

See, this is that thing that I have a problem with, the presentation of Trump as an “aberration” rather than the embodiment of all the dark and noxious shit that the GOP has been using for decades to attain and retain power. Portraying him as something that just popped into being may seem like a good idea when you’re trying to win over the “mushy middle” who wants to think of their votes for him as a “mistake,” but it also means that there will be somebody far worse than him running in the future, smart enough not to make the same mistakes he did.

This winter they withdrew from the Epic Pass, which is one of two big passes you can buy that accesses lots of big ski areas. A-Basin was in partnership with the Epic Pass since its inception over a decade ago. They were too busy this winter, especially on weekends. Now they are back to being a fully independent ski area.

If you (outside the UK) who happen to be able (*cough* dailymotion *cough*) to view the 2019 series “The Planets (2019)” from the BBC with Brian Cox, you’ll be treated to quite the visual treat.

However, it’s not the first series to be called “The Planets” and I seem to remember watching another.

It turns out there have been several such:

The Planets (1985)

The Planets (1999)

The Planets (2017)

And one that used the Holst music as the background:

The Planets (1983)

… which Cox has also done as part of the current production as a stand alone entry.

The 2019 production has outstanding special effects, so much so that I suspect there will be viewers who could be very disappointed to know that the real images from spacecraft are usually much less pretty.

Cox goes with the high-drama, less data approach, which I guess is what is needed for the mass audiences.

Anyway, this is likely to be BBC’s top science documentary for 2019.

Looks like the meal card.

I used to eat in the towers basement. Iirc, there was an additional dining room in the medical school or engineer school.

I remember that some anonymous soul in one corner of the dining room used to peel the top waxed cover off the butter patties. And then would throw them onto the ceiling. Where, somehow, he managed to get them to stick. Throughout the term the numbers of patties would increase. At the beginning of the next term, they would all be gone.

Strange, the details we remember over half a century later.

IIRC, the Student ID had punch holes all over and had one’s social security number embossed on it. This being before the stealing social security numbers was easily done. Which is why I do not want to put mine on the web.

Well, that and the fact that in 1972, I apparently looked even more like a dork than I remember.

It looks like the US version will feature a different narrator, Zachary Quinto.

I have nothing against Zachary (don’t really know him), but he’ll be a far cry from Brian Cox. Zachary is an actor and not a scientist.

This will probably be, yet again, a dumbing down of a show for the American audience. Bring in an actor young people may recognize (Zachary plays Spock in the ST reboot movies) to get some name recognition.

Nevertheless, I think that they will soon find that, in their striving to cut government expenses, they will find simply killing the illegals the cheapest option. As I recall, a plain KZ was relatively expensive to operate, while a place like Birch Meadows was much cheaper to run.

I’m watching ‘Tales of the City’ on Netflix. A taxi driver has a turtle next to him. A married couple are passengers and the wife spontaneously decides to stay in SF for a few days (reasons) instead of return to east coast with he husband and jumps out of the cab. Taxi driver says, “That’s why I prefer turtles.”

/ Taxi driver hasn’t met my shithead turtle. Fucker knocked the filter plumbing out of the tank again and dumped 10 gallons on the carpet this time. Turtle is now banished from it’s sun box by lack of usable ramp and can’t reach the pipes to do damage because the water is still 3” low.

Hi.

Unimportant local update.

My wife wanted to learn how to make tortillas from scratch, because a) store-bought ones aren’t so good, and 2) when she wants tortillas that’s a thirty-two mile round trip.

So she decided to learn how to make traditional tortillas. She bought a tortilla press from Mexico, then watched a bunch of YouTube videos from Mexicans showing how to make tortillas.

Tonight she made a soft taco dinner (though she had to use ghost peppers because we don’t have any habaneros). Yum.

Roger Stone’s lawyers filed a motion to get all the information from the DNC about hiring CrowdStrike when the DNC was trying to figure out if and who attacked its computer servers and on-line accounts.

Emptywheel speculates because Roger Stone is still trying to rodent copulate for the GOP, as nothing involving the DNC and CrowdStrike has anything to do with his cases. It would be really useful to the GOP however to know what mitigation the DNC has taken to prevent that sort of thing happening in the next election.

A New Form of Victim Blaming: Demanding that Rat-Fucker Roger Stone Get to Learn the Defensive Measures DNC Implemented in 2016 (goes to emptywheel).

What Stone’s lawyers are asking for

Roger Stone’s ongoing effort to float hoaxes rather than mount a credible defense has gotten the left and right denialists into a tizzy about CrowdStrike again. But this time it’s not just an effort to raise doubts about whether Russia hacked the DNC, but an effort to suggest that Democrats can only obtain law enforcement help in response to being hacked if they’re willing to share their own network defenses with the FBI, and do so while their candidate is under active investigation by the FBI.

As I noted back in May, Stone demanded unredacted CrowdStrike reports in the guise of challenging warrants based off a claim that Russia didn’t actually hack the DNC. In the latter motion, Stone claimed to have received three redacted CrowdStrike reports (though as is typical of the sloppy work his lawyers do, they can’t even get that citation correct).

Mozilla has released an emergency critical update for Firefox to squash a zero-day vulnerability that is under active attack.

The Firefox 67.0.3 and ESR 60.7.1 builds include a patch for CVE-2019-11707. The vulnerability is a type confusion bug in the way Firefox handles JavaScript objects in Array.pop. By manipulating the object in the array, malicious JavaScript on a webpage could get the ability to remotely execute code without any user interaction.

This is a bad thing.

What’s worse, Mozilla says it has already received reports that the flaw is being actively exploited in the wild by miscreants, making it critical for users to install the latest patched versions of the browser.

However, it’s not the first series to be called “The Planets” and I seem to remember watching another.

It turns out there have been several such:

The Planets (1985)

The Planets (1999)

The Planets (2017)

And one that used the Holst music as the background:

The Planets (1983)

… which Cox has also done as part of the current production as a stand alone entry.

The 2019 production has outstanding special effects, so much so that I suspect there will be viewers who could be very disappointed to know that the real images from spacecraft are usually much less pretty.

Cox goes with the high-drama, less data approach, which I guess is what is needed for the mass audiences.

Anyway, this is likely to be BBC’s top science documentary for 2019.

I love Brian Cox shows. I hate Brian Cox’s voice. He is very smart but even my husband, who is a science geek engineer, uses his shows to go to sleep to. His voice is like a lullaby…I can’t watch his shows because of that.

Hubby noticed that a couple of his shows had dubbed voiceovers. So, apparently, we’re not the only ones.

I used to eat in the towers basement. Iirc, there was an additional dining room in the medical school or engineer school.

I remember that some anonymous soul in one corner of the dining room used to peel the top waxed cover off the butter patties. And then would throw them onto the ceiling. Where, somehow, he managed to get them to stick. Throughout the term the numbers of patties would increase. At the beginning of the next term, they would all be gone.

Strange, the details we remember over half a century later.

IIRC, the Student ID had punch holes all over and had one’s social security number embossed on it. This being before the stealing social security numbers was easily done. Which is why I do not want to put mine on the web.

Well, that and the fact that in 1972, I apparently looked even more like a dork than I remember.

There were still butter pats and forks being adhered/embedded into the drop ceiling panels of the Towers Cafeteria in the early 80s.

I think the alternative cafeteria was a small one in Lothrop Hall - near the medical school and not the engineering building (Benedum).

Trump’s polling slightly lower than his win, when he was relatively unknown, and hadn’t yet screwed a large number of people over. I think the numbers are about exactly where they actually are. There aren’t many ashamed to be Trump but still supporting him people. They’re either proud racists, or unaffected by his stances and don’t give a care what he does as long as it doesn’t affect them (I work mainly with the latter group).

Polling in 2016 pretty much matched the voting. And Trump is hurting his chances in the states that got him over the edge in 2016. It’s not going to be an easy thing, but there are many factors playing against Trump this time.

Yes. 100%. The appeal of transgressing, of doing something you know to be wrong just to stick it to people you hate, is great. And while there is a substantial minority who love going to hate rallies and shouting their hate out loud in public, there is a much larger group who are a bit too embarrassed to do that, but who watch CNN, and read the Times, and while they think red caps and white power signs are a bit gauche, they also really hate those Democrats and libs, because that’s what CNN and the Times trains people to do. They’re the well-off, middle class white people who you know from work and who are the parents of your kid’s friends. They know that you’re not supposed to say the quiet part out loud. But to actually vote for one of those socialists, those lefties, when some people say they kill babies? Nope.

The same pattern has been repeated by white people all over the world. In the UK, in Australia, white people continue to defy polls by telling them what they think they want to hear, and seething internally with resentment at a world that victimises them, that is so PC that it dares to make them feel ashamed about anything at all. White people, especially white men, aren’t supposed to feel ashamed. They’re not used to it. They’ve never been expected to feel it. And how dare those intellectuals, those academics, those journalists, make them feel too ashamed to say something out loud? So they lash out where they can, in private, in the voting booth. That’s why these elections all over the world continue to defy polls. A minority of people are proud to say the quiet part out loud. But there’s a much more substantial group who want to say it, and envy the freedom that others seem to have to say it.

Coates was pragmatic enough that his case for reparations had NOTHING TO DO with slavery.

It was about redlining and other forms of housing discrimination, about massive resistance to school desegregation (like when the State of Virginia closed all their public schools for 5 years rather than desegregate; and then “somehow” funneled a bunch of public money to “private” whites-only schools and black Virginians of that generation got no education).

The way post-WWII GI Bill benefits elevated an entire generation of white people, and were denied to black people.

He stuck to matters recent enough that living witnesses, living victims and living beneficiaries are plentiful. Also, well-documented federal policy.

Coates was pragmatic enough that his case for reparations had NOTHING TO DO with slavery.

It was about redlining and other forms of housing discrimination, about massive resistance to school desegregation (like when the State of Virginia closed all their public schools for 5 years rather than desegregate; and then “somehow” funneled a bunch of public money to “private” whites-only schools and black Virginians of that generation got no education).

The way post-WWII GI Bill benefits elevated an entire generation of white people, and were denied to black people.

He stuck to matters recent enough that living witnesses, living victims and living beneficiaries are plentiful. Also, well-documented federal policy.

He also made sure to specifically frame reparations in matters other than simply financial, which is what the hangup is all about. It’s not just about money, it’s about seeing the nation actually have a reckoning with the way its treated the black population, and that goes beyond just ‘write checks’. It’s about actually addressing the things such as redlining and preventing such from happening, it’s about actually taking tangible actions toward penance for the state-sanctioned sins the country has done. And TNC made it specific that it was a price that the country collectively had to pay.

Unfortunately most of the country still only seems to hear ‘WHITE PEOPLE MUST GIVE THEIR MONEY TO SHIFTY BLACK FOLK!’ and rage forever, and thus nothing will ever get fucking done.

I think that there may be a method to this madness. By providing really weak counterarguments, they are training their followers to ignore actual counter-arguments.

Inoculation Theory:

I get the reason why folks are cynical but without HRC as a foil, more people are seeing him as the empty suit fraud he is and it will only get worse when his economic policies start hitting his supporters in their ass.

If my one friend who voted for Trump starts rolling out the same HRC-class rhetoric about the Democratic candidate I will instantly and even more vehemently call him out on it this time around. The GOP has been trying to paint Warren with the same sort of crap since she got elected to the Senate. And I expect that the innuendo and crap will be tossed about the candidate regardless of who it is; health issues, “socialist”, etc. etc. etc.

If anything I’ll start in on my conservative Catholic friends on how Trump and his supporters don’t seem to care about infants, the poor, and all the others The Church is supposed to be defending. And I’ll challenge any attempt to make it a single issue discussion centered around abortion as well since I know that’s where he will start retreating to since that was one of the anti-HRC justifications in 2016.

Whereas I only delete tweets when I do something ridiculous like accidentally post a late tweet from a thread at its head, because it slipped my mind that I was composing 240-characters-at-a-time on the website, then cutting them and pasting them to Notepad so that I could put up the next section of a multitweet thread without folks having to wait around 2 minutes with my TL ending on a tweet that makes no sense on its own. For a billionaire, or even a 100-millionaire — forking over 10% of their net worth in taxes WON’T AFFECT THEIR STANDARD OF LIVING ONE LITTLE BIT.

They’ll still live in the same place, take the same vacations, eat the same, drink the same, buy all the same things. Even the most profligate of spenders, ever if they’re heroin addicts… there’s a limit to what they can spend. After a certain point, more money is just numbers on a ledger. It changes nothing about their lives.
