Amusing story:

Monday night, I was with 5 Hate-Trump friends all of whom voted for her. One (a Bernie fan in 2016) asked who we currently supported for President. Despite our protestations that it’s too early to make any call, 5 of us (including him) agreed that our preferred candidate was Warren. The holdout? the guy who predicted early in 2016 that Trump would win and who believes that we need to appeal to white men and those who live in the rust belt: his candidate? either Biden or Buttigieg. Like some here, he doesn’t believe that America would vote for a woman.

Private prison companies like GeoGroup usually have contracts guaranteeing minimum number of beds filled. This generates incentive to put more and more people in the system to maintain profits. Prison companies are the main reasons you see home monitoring, probation and parole systems getting gutted. They are much of the reason why we incarcerate more people than any other country, and more than any other society in human historyt in numbers and percentage with the exception of the Soviet Union under Stalin.

Given the current push for criminal justice reform, and decriminalization of marijuana, there are fewer people likely heading to prison over time, which makes the private prison industry undesirable to investors.

So they have moved on to housing undocumented persons, either awaiting asylum or deportation (or both). And they are not only charging crazy amounts to house those people, but are doing so in inhumane conditions.

When you join the rest of us in reality, you’ll discover that it costs thousands upon thousands to feed, house, and educate those in our prisons. If they move from private to public funded, we pay the bill.

Private prisons don’t cost anything because they make the prisoners work and when they die, they sell their organs.

Of course, if it were Trump v Bernie, it’s possible that Putin would have supported Bernie as a more reliable FP partner and someone totally ineffective in domestic policy. OTOH, as the chaos candidate, no one could best Trump. The terrifying likelihood is that in a 2016 Bernie-Trump contest, Trump could have ended up with a plurality of popular votes which would have made him “legitimate”.

America did vote for a woman. Voter suppression, and, possibly, actual interference (e.g. FL) kept her out of the White House.

For me it was a really mixed bag.

Positives:
- Liam Neeson (I liked the way his character was at loggerheads with the council)
- Samuel L Jackson
- Natalie Portman
- Darth Maul
- The final lightsaber battle
- Palpatine/Sidious
- The underwater monsters
- I liked that Lucas tried to go bigger in scope, even if it wasn’t 100% successful.

Negatives:
- JAR JAR BINKS!
- Over reliance on CGI
- Jake Lloyd (though to be fair, he wasn’t given great dialogue to work with)
- Story seems too disjointed
- Secondary to that, the ending battle sequence seemed rushed and overly complex.
- Lack of background on the Jedi Council and the Republic
- Trade Federation guys are annoying.

Add to that - Positives:
Obi Wan as done by Ewan McGregor
Nuanced take on Jedi (Qui Gon and Obi Wan).

Negatives:
Trade Federation pushed racist tropes
Slaver who owned Skywalkers pushed racist tropes.
Over reliance on CGI throughout the prequels, choosing not to use practical effects where necessary made the movies overly cartoonish (a problem remedied with Rogue One, Force Awakens, Last Jedi).

More senseless gun violence, which doesn’t rise to mass shooting levels.

Two murdered at a car dealership and shooter committed suicide. The shooter apparently was just laid off from the dealership.

Doug MacGlashan, a contractor who was inside the building at the time of the shooting, told NBC Bay Area that before the shooting he was told by an employee, “I just fired him, he won’t leave the premises. Should I be worried, what should we do?’”

“So, they were wondering should they call authorities, whatever. At that point, somebody asked, you know, ‘Should we be worried?’ And somebody said, ‘Yeah, he’s got a history with guns,’” MacGlashan told the station.

“And not 10 minutes later, we heard gunshots,” he said. “I just heard pop, pop, pop, pop.”

Interesting tidbit about the father in that drowning photo:

Martínez, his wife Tania Vanessa Ávalos, and their little girl are from El Salvador. After leaving their home country in April, and spending several months in southern Mexico, they ventured north in an attempt to enter the U.S. Over the weekend, they tried to apply for asylum at the international bridge in Matamoros, Mexico, but found offices closed and many ahead of them in line. So they decided to cross the Rio Grande.

Now it’s possible the offices were closed because it was the weekend, but I wouldn’t put it past these Trump goons to purposefully close offices to prevent people from making asylum claims.

So, the English pilgrims, when they took ships over here a few centuries ago, and brought their kids with them, were these parents or fake parents, putting their children in ‘harms way’?

The British scattered unaccompanied yutes all the way from Botany Bay, South Carolina to Botany Bay, New South Wales. If you looked carefully, you could tell they were the MS-13 of their day.

A further thought: it’s considered normal for leading GOP figures to call Democrats - barely left of center by international standards - socialists. But everyone in the news media would have a fainting spell if a major Dem called Rs fascists, which is much closer to being true

President Trump told Fox Business the federal government should sue tech giants like Google and Facebook and lambasted the platforms, including Twitter, for allegedly trying to rig the 2020 elections in favor of Democrats.

Said Trump: “They make it much harder for me to get out the message. These people are all Democrats, it’s totally biased toward Democrats. If I announced tomorrow that I’m going to become a nice liberal Democrat, I would pick up five times more followers.”

even if this were true, (which it obviously aint) it’s not illegal

They are going to mess around and cause viewers to tune out of these debates.

The real issue facing the Democratic party is apathy, not Republican malice.

Yes, Trumpers are malicious but they cannot control the election if the decent people decide to show up and vote.

What we need are real debates, not stage dog and pony shows. Candidates should be forced to pick just two issues they want to debate, and propose their position. Then if another candidate disagrees with said position, the two should be given 20 minutes to have a real back and forth.

With 10 serious candidates (the others can get lost), one has 10*9/2 = 45 possible pairings. Given modern communication capabilities, the DNC ought to be able to create 45 different mini-shows. Heck, a zillion Youtube creators pump out that many videos a month each just sitting in their kitchens wearing pajamas. Certainly the DNC can do it.

The DNC should have picked a month to do this kind of monster-showering of videos across all platforms, to really engage audiences with topics with people arguing different positions.

I fear there is too much of a remnant of old-school-ism still in the DNC. They are stuck in old ways of doing things and will not be flexible enough.

This is what happens to all social structures when they get too big and too old.

But hey! It made the NRA and gun humpers happy and that means campaign $$$ and votes.

Unfortunately for the firearm industry, it hasn’t been all roses….

“The real big problem right now, the state of the gun industry — is that right now we do have a conservative in office, and people aren’t really out buying guns like they were when Obama was in office,” said Lindberg. “The problem is that the gun manufacturers kind of hit the panic button.”

Manufacturers now are selling products on their own websites at prices that make it difficult for dealers , he said.

“They’re undercutting the dealer network.”

Today’s Word: Intaillable.

In the France of Louis XIV and successors, a growing number of persons sought to become “intaillable”, “untaxable”, for services to the crown. As their number grew, the tax base shrunk, until there was barely the revenue to buy guillotines.

Breaking story at WaPo.

Asylum officers urged a U.S. appeals court Wednesday to block the Trump administration from forcing migrants to remain in Mexico while they await their immigration court hearings in the United States.

The officers, who have been directed to implement the program, say it is “fundamentally contrary to the moral fabric of our Nation and our international and domestic legal obligations.”

During an interview on MSNBC this afternoon Senator Sanders took a turn back to 2016 and did it in way and with words that I immediately associate with dt. I couldn’t put a clip in so I am referencing the TPM article.

“Sounding a Trumpian note, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) told MSNBC’s Kasie Hunt Wednesday that “some people are saying” he would have won the Democratic nomination in 2016 if the system wasn’t “rigged.”

“Some people say that if maybe that system was not rigged against me I would have won the nomination and defeated Donald Trump,” he said. “That’s what some people say.”

“He got irritated as she continued to push the question of whether he’ll drop out if he’s not the nominee, demanding to know if she’d asked the question of other nominees.”
