Things are getting serious when the lotteries start fiddling with their rules, and PowerBall is now changing the changes they had decided upon just a few days ago:
Update: Game sales and interest rates to determine advertised Powerball jackpot
The Powerball Product Group today announced its decision to determine Powerball’s advertised jackpot based on game sales and interest rates. Following the April 8 drawing, guaranteed starting jackpot amounts and minimum jackpot increases will be eliminated, and future jackpot increases will be determined and announced by the Product Group prior to each drawing. Previously, Powerball® jackpots started at $40 million (annuity) and increased by a minimum of $10 million (annuity) between drawings.
“These changes are necessary to ensure that ticket sales can support the Powerball jackpot and other lower-tier cash prizes,” said Gregg Mineo, Powerball Product Group Chairman and Maine Lottery Director. “Our number one priority is making sure that the Powerball game can continue to assist lotteries in raising proceeds for their beneficiaries.”
The Powerball Product Group announced plans last week to reduce the starting jackpot to $20 million (annuity) and minimum jackpot increases to $2 million (annuity) between drawings. Those changes were scheduled to go into effect after the current jackpot was won. However, due to the evolving COVID-19 pandemic, the Powerball Product Group revisited the topic and decided Powerball’s advertised jackpot should be determined by game sales and interest rates effective following the drawing next Wednesday.
[…]
Lotteries hate low interest rates because then their advertised annuities have larger present cash values. With interest rates hovering around 1% that means present cash values are near future annuity values.

They’re flailing.
In the next week, the states that didn’t lock down are going to get hit with a wrecking ball; already seeing nursing homes in Texas where 80% of the oldsters are infected.
Two weeks from now, there will be thousands of nursing homes across the Deep South, where the staff is too sick to take care of the patients.
The primary effects of the pandemic are the direct deaths. But it’s the secondary & tertiary effects where we’re going to see the REAL body count.

Also, again, when things are finally reopened (which will be long before things are truly safe) that does not mean that the economy is just going to power up again to pre-corona levels: a lot of businesses will be gone already, people will be avoiding crowded events and places like theme parks, multiplex cinemas, sporting or concert venues, and who is going to willingly stuff themselves into a crowded metal tube with recirculated air for a multi-hour flight?
Secondary effects of Pandemic: Famine, war, opportunistic diseases finishing off those already weakened by COVID-19
Tertiary effects: Mass migrations from affected areas, people who see how churches & tourism were causes of mass-infections reacting angrily, increased random violence, suicides from depression

I quite agree on this point. Newsweek did a weak-ass interview of Sean Hannity. Surprise! He weasels out from responsibility for branding COVID-19 a hoax, for minimizing the pandemic at every turn, and blames all the usual suspects, while exonerating Trump.

Yeah, It is pretty conclusive that this is not an engineered virus. However I don’t think it is a coincidence that the Wuhan CDC where they specialize in research on the horseshoe bats that are known reservoirs of unknown corona viruses is just a couple of miles from the initial outbreak. We know how contagious it is, it would only take one researcher and one momentary slip up for an outbreak to start.
I might have accidentally made some caramel sauce this morning. I don’t actually have anything to put it on, but that can be remedied. To my credit, I did put the aforementioned caramel sauce into the freezer rather than eating it right away. (If, in fact, one could eat much caramel sauce at a sitting. Way too sweet.)
I blame some of this on the fact I’m going through wiping an old computer and reinstalling the OS. The wiping was slow, but fine-I could just go off and leave it. The install is a pain because my MacBook wants to go to sleep about every 12 minutes unless I move the cursor or click something every few minutes for the entire 2 1/2 or so hours this is taking.
However, this is a great opportunity to get an old computer out of the house and see that it goes to a student that needs it.

You have to wonder what kind of pay-off would induce the pulpit-pimps to risk killing off their own marks. We cannot discount the possibility that they are just stupid and blinded by greed, but there may be something more sinister at work as well. We have seen in other areas, notably France, that outbreaks are linked to large religious gatherings. I have observed for some time that Russian influencers were working the Fundy circuit for years before Trump even declared his candidacy. Since the fundy quacks are some of the easiest people in the world to buy off, I wonder if this is a deliberate strategy to increase the spread of the disease, and thereby maximize death and chaos in the United States.
The real problem here is that as this grows legs. The infected poor won’t seek treatment and we know what that means.

In September 2018, the Trump administration received detailed plans for a new machine designed to churn out millions of protective respirator masks at high speed during a pandemic.
The plans, submitted to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) by the medical manufacturer O&M Halyard, were the culmination of a venture unveiled almost three years earlier by the Obama administration.
But HHS did not proceed with making the machine.

I don’t ascribe malice when simple stupidity or delusion are likely answers.
Religious extremism arises out of deep personal needs. These needs are not malicious, just problematic.
That explains the marks pretty well, they obviously are not committing suicide out of malice. As for the hucksters, though, they are undoubtedly acting routinely from greed and the lust for power, which ARE malicious. Their actions in this case seem to work against that. I am wondering why.

What changed prior to this outbreak that led to them deciding that the stockpile was suddenly a dragon’s horde that belonged solely to the Feds?

It’s the same with so many different laws, the idea that any one state is an island unto itself and the problems within its borders are its alone is just ridiculous. Hell, the small county my mother grew up in in rural Kentucky is a dry county. Yet beer, wine, and liquor keep showing up left and right. Ain’t nobody going without alcohol if they want it bad enough, they just have to be willing to drive to the next county over. Even the local sheriffs feel it’s easier to just look the other way if they catch you with alcohol in the car, so long as you’re not drunk or carrying enough to start your own brewery.

Wonder what Rev John Shelby Spong would have to say about all this:
Rescuing the Bible from Fundamentalism: A Bishop Rethinks the Meaning of Scripture
Along that line, it’s interesting how many Evangelical and Fundy ideas are actually of modern, non-Biblical origin. Christian Fundamentalist itself did not exist as a concept until the 20th century, its growth really beginning with the publication of The Fundamentals: A Testimony To The Truth, a 12 volume set of essays by various conservative clergy and published between 1910 and 1915. It took the hinterland by storm, one result being the rise of young Earth creationism. This had previously not been taken seriously even among conservative theologians. Bishop Ussher had devised his famous, or infamous, timeline of creation in the 1600s but this had generally been ignored or ridiculed until the rise of the Fundamentalists. Similarly, the popular concept of the Rapture, taken as gospel among fundies, is not actually in the Gospels, or anywhere else in the Bible, and appears to have originated with the mid-19th century cult leader John Darby.
These movements are much more modern marketing than old-time religion.

Kailyn Lowry has said she cannot see herself vaccinating her children against the novel coronavirus in the future.
As scientists and researchers search for a safe and effective vaccine against the virus, the Teen Mom 2 star, 28, was asked this week by a fan whether she would allow herself and her children to be vaccinated once one was available.
“Absolutely not,” replied Lowry, who has spoken out against vaccinations in the past, and is currently pregnant with her fourth child.

NJ cases are flattening out - not because they’re getting ahead of the outbreak, but because they’re running into resource limitations. They can’t test and process the kits fast enough.
“The rate of increase on positive tests is diminishing. But in fairness, that’s a little bit of an imperfect assessment,” Murphy told Bloomberg News. “Because as much as I want to test everybody, and that was our hope from Day 1, we just don’t have the materials from the feds to be able to do that. … But the rate has been flattening, percentage-wise.”
He’s right that it’s an imperfect assessment.
New Jersey has not significantly increased the number of test results it’s reporting each day, averaging about 5,500 over the past week, according to NJ Advance Media analysis of the state’s daily numbers. So while it may feel like the number of cases is evening out, that’s only because it’s capped by the number of tests that can be given, reviewed and then reported.
Instead of being able to test significantly more each day as new capacity is added, they’re constrained, which means no way to get ahead. Test results are lagging 7-10 days due to the types of tests that were being used - and are still being used.

We know that Franky Graham Cracker endlessly kisses Putin’s ass. So are his fellow Pulpit Pimps!
re: #140 DodgerFan1988
Meh. Bad intentions meet unlimited funding. Here’s the scoop.
Amid the mushrooming coronavirus crisis, Rupert and Lachlan Murdoch are girding for a pandemic of public-interest lawsuits over misinformation and conspiracy theories dispensed by certain Fox News Channel and Fox Business Network personalities such as Sean Hannity, Laura Ingraham, and Trish Regan.
According to a top Murdoch executive, the father-and-son media moguls are ready to go to war with potential plaintiffs such as the Washington League for Increased Transparency and Ethics—aka WASHLITE—an activist non-profit that filed suit on Thursday against Rupert Murdoch, Fox News and other defendants.
The lawsuit, which seeks “nominal damages” and “reasonable attorneys’ fees,” demands an injunction to prevent Fox outlets from “otherwise interfering with or undermining the legitimate control measures imposed within the State of Washington for the limited time period under which the pandemic is brought under control and until the pandemic is brought under control.”
The conservative outlet fired back—in a statement provided to The Daily Beast, and attributed to Lily Fu Claffee, Fox News Media’s general counsel—that WASHLITE’s lawsuit is “Wrong on the facts, frivolous on the law.”
Claffee added: “We will defend vigorously and seek sanctions as appropriate.”
West, 59, said he has been arrested numerous times in protest and civil-disobedience incidents, but claimed the rewards of successful lawsuits have allowed him to afford a lovely house in Olympia, Wash., overlooking Puget Sound and a fleet of pricey sports cars. He insisted this latest litigation against Fox is not a public-relations stunt.
“This might seem strange to you,” he added, “but I make a very good living beating the government in court”—mostly suing local jurisdictions, politicians, and taxpayer-funded agencies using Washington’s public records and open records laws. “I’ve gotten a number of six-figure awards…I have a collection of European sports cars. I drive a Jaguar. I have three Mercedes 450 SLs and an Alfa Romeo. My house overlooks the water and it was purchased with money from the liquor control board.”
West won a $192,000 settlement after filing an open-meetings lawsuit against the agency that governs Washington’s legalized marijuana industry.
The Murdoch exec, however, said his bosses won’t cave so easily. Former Fox Business anchor Trish Regan—who on March 9 claimed that the enemies of President Donald Trump were plotting to use the novel coronavirus outbreak to re-impeach him—lost her show, in part, to mollify a chorus of Fox critics.
“The strategy is no settlements, even if it costs way more to fight the lawsuit and seek sanctions for ambulance-chasing lawyers,” the Murdoch exec told The Daily Beast, noting that the Murdochs retained Williams & Connolly in 2018 and engineered the dismissal of two federal lawsuits over Fox News’ conspiracy-mongering in the July 2016 robbery shooting-death of Democratic National Committee staffer Seth Rich.
The current lawsuit, and others like it, could meet with a similar fate on First Amendment grounds.

The rise of the Stone-Campbell Movement (a return to an idealized “early Christianity” i.e… entirely made up around Scots-Irish and existing Protestant American cultural norms and constraints) of the early 1800’s quickly grew and then led to the Dominionist hellscape we see today. They are a broad enormous cult fed by a astroturfed Top-down/ groundswell circle jerk of support.

Related story, when I was in Detroit last fall visiting my baby sister, we did the Detroit International Half Marathon together. (So I have run across both the bridge and the tunnel but never driven across either.) Anyway, the day before we went by a distillery in Detroit whose name I currently forget and it turns out they had 8 gins on the menu. Of course, I wanted to try them all.
Conveniently, they offered a taster set! Two of them! Described on the menu as 4 one ounce pours, priced at $12 each. Being from CA, where there are limits on what a distillery can serve you, I thought there was no way that meant 4 one ounce pours, especially at that price. I ordered both, because I can drink 2 ounces and be fine.
Hahahaha no. They presented me with at least 8 ounces of gin. mr. klys and my sister both helped. We left several of the gins unfinished.
…I did buy a bottle of my favorite, though. I should go open that soon.
Anyway, ran the half the next day which went fine and then the Marine Corps Marathon a week after that which did not go fine but that was not the gin’s fault.

Trump has basically upended every idea we had of a functioning federal government. The damage done will take years to repair, if it can be repaired as states both local and foreign have already begun planning their futures around the inability to trust the federal government will do its job. This outbreak alone will likely lead to a lot of rewriting of state and local emergency plans around the assumption that the federal government cannot be relied upon to provide help in a crisis.

Yes and no. Even at their most cynical, most Repubs and wingnuts alike agreed that the federal gov’t had a role to play in a national crisis. Even if all that role was was coordinating relief efforts, it was necessary to ensure that the states didn’t end up turning on each other.
Then we get to the Trump admin, which is actually saying aloud that if states end up in a knife fight, the only job of the federal government is to sit and watch.
re: #176 klys (maker of Silmarils)
I missed breaking 3 hours in the MCM in 1992 because I just hit the wall hard after crossing the river and hitting that last stretch back to the monument. (Actually, I may have broken it, but in those pre-chip days it took me at least a minute just to get to the starting line.) It’s a fast course on a good day, but those last two or three miles were the hardest I’ve experienced at the end of a marathon.

Trump has basically upended every idea we had of a functioning federal government. The damage done will take years to repair, if it can be repaired as states both local and foreign have already begun planning their futures around the inability to trust the federal government will do its job. This outbreak alone will likely lead to a lot of rewriting of state and local emergency plans around the assumption that the federal government cannot be relied upon to provide help in a crisis.
the other side of this will be (for those still alive)
“see, you survived without the federal government’s help after all”

I regret that I have but one upding to give for this. It is the crux of the problem. The hinterland gentry hates and fears the federal government, they have since Sherman’s March. They don’t hate it because it is tyrannical, they hate it because it prevents the tyranny they think it is their birthright to exercise. They don’t hate it because it is incompetent, they hate it because it is competent, to enforce wage and labor laws, to protect the environment they want to pillage, to ensure free speech from local dissidents they could otherwise get the yokel sheriff to shut down or “disappear.”
The provincial aristocracy was the main target of the French Revolution for a reason.

”..Why are we putting up with this? Why are Democrats not shrieking with outrage, “What the fuck does a shitty real estate developer know about epidemiology?” The reaction to Jared Kushner being trotted out to throw in some corporate bullshit-speak should have been for Benjamin Franklin’s skeletal corpse to show up and beat him with a femur right when he said, “The President also wanted us to make sure we think outside the box.” Motherfucker, we’re dying here. The box is a goddamn coffin.
Kushner blathered on with cliches about “innovative solutions” and, really, “leave no stone unturned,” and he turned to the real villains in the alibi the Trump administration is coming up with for its criminally-cruel abandonment of its basic duties to protect Americans: It’s those motherfucking governors’ fault. They’re out of their league. They don’t understand their jobs. He said that some governors “don’t know what’s in their state” when it comes to medical supplies and ventilators, an accusation that he offered no support for.
Then he tossed in, “What a lot of the voters are seeing now is that when you elect somebody to be a mayor or a governor or a president, you’re trying to think about who will be a competent manager during the time of crisis. This is a time of crisis, and you’re seeing certain people are better managers than others.” This brainless dipshit has no idea how much he was talking about his hulking, moronic father-in-law who still thinks people give a single rat fuck about his popularity.
Then he accused governors of “asking for things that they don’t necessarily need at the moment,” which, no shit, bitch. That’s called “planning ahead,” something the Trump administration didn’t fucking do at all. And Kushner said about the Strategic National Stockpile of medical supplies: “the notion of the federal stockpile was it’s supposed to be our stockpile; it’s not supposed to be state stockpiles that they then use.” Or “Fuck you. Buy your own shit, blue states.”

keep in mind
- everyone assumed, yes assumed, what the mayor did
- that the federal government was doing its job of planning and prep it always had
- so she points out the trump admin hasnt - for three 3 years
- and for the most part without warnings or notification
- meanwhile the states and cities have had 2 months or so to ramp up and cover themselves where the fed dropped the ball, and they’re doing it in the middle of the raging pandemic
- forced to because no one said a year or 3 ago, “we’re not doing this anymore you’re gonna be on your own”
because really there’s no change in federal policy
there’s incompetence (oh, it’s our job to protect emergency supply lines?)
and ignorance (we dont need this panel, when was the last pandemic)
it’s not mere malpractice. it’s malfeasance

Spoilered to spare those who don’t care about running talk.
It was, bluntly, a fucking awful day this past year. Remnants of a tropical storm moving through to start the morning and then the sun came out toward the end. Over an inch of rain fell during the race (for me, concentrated between mile 5 and mile 13 - the blue mile was kind of waterlogged and there was a point where you could choose between running through the 3”+ deep puddle or the mud to the side) and it was mid 70s by the time I finished if not hotter. Humid as fuck.
Also I was getting sick, haha.
I trained hard for the race and probably went out too hard considering the conditions. Between all of it I hit the wall between miles 12 and 13. Way too fucking early. Walked a non-trivial portion of the race and it is currently (and hopefully will remain) my personal worst. After making it through the finisher’s chute while trying to find mr. klys and my parents, I was dry-heaving for a solid 30 seconds while trying not to look like I was in distress because we had no time to spare to catch our plane back to SFO.
But I did finish the fucker.

Evening Lizardim from the freezing cold and snowy wild north country. Todays stats: 4 deaths, up to 22; 47 new cases, up to 789; over 24,000 tested. This is the third day in a row we have tested more people and had fewer positives, and 12 days in a row of flat or negative growth in the case count, indicating that Minnesota is, indeed, succeeding in holding off the charge. Watched “The Spy Who Loved Me” for the first time since I was a kid last night. That ski jump off the cliff at the beginning is just so fucking badass. Back then (1977) it was the most expensive stunt ever done in a film. Good movie and song too.
Was out and about earlier today and after buying my groceries, I went for a short drive to check out some the usual suspects and ended up stopping by a canoe landing I’d not explored before and got a few nice images. I made a page Along the Namakagon River

Illinois c19 status:
Friday 4/3 48,048 tested (4392 new), 8904 positive (1209 new), 210 deaths (53 new)
Most of this is Chicago. It is rapidly spreading up there. Gov. Pritzker has got four new temporary hospitals set up around that area to hold less ill c19 cases. I think he is doing a lot, has done a lot, but Chicago is in trouble.
Where I am, my county and the one to the south, we have no known cases. But one over has 5, and 1 death, but that has been steady for some days now. Knock wood.

Made mine from a tube-style cotton sock and two medium-large spring-steel paper clips, where each clip has 2 stainless-steel “handle” parts that one would normally squeeze to “open” the clip. These handles are shaped such they can interlock (with mild tension), but they can disengage easily with a slight twist. So it’s basically a 3-part off-the-shelf DIY mask covering nose and mouth. No sewing required. No elastic (except the tube sock itself.) Ears are not involved. (It may cover lower part of ears.)
Such clips can be found in office products section of some stores, such as Wa*-Mart, or some on-line stores. Mine were the largest of an assortment of sizes in one package.

Moscow Mitch continues to pack the courts with unqualified reactionaries.
President Trump is tapping a young district judge and former clerk to now-Supreme Court Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh to fill a vacancy on the powerful U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.
The nomination of Justin Walker, 37, is almost certain to trigger a vigorous battle over his qualifications to serve on the nation’s second-most influential court, which is often at the apex of key cases involving executive power and federal regulations. The American Bar Association had deemed Walker not qualified for his current post as judge for the Western District of Kentucky, where he has served for just over five months. Source WaPo

re: #344 John Hughes
One thing I’ve noted here is that if you act like a child, you get treated like a child. It’s happened to me a couple of times when I was out of line…
A hotspot is Louisiana:
Louisiana’s modeling data show the state on course to require 2,500 new hospitalizations a day in the New Orleans area by mid-May, if the public does not adhere to COVID-19 mitigation measures like Gov. Edwards’ Stay at Home order.
Governor Edwards and the Louisiana Department of Health on Friday shared a product of the state’s COVID-19 modeling that takes into account the Governor’s aggressive mitigation measures.
[…]
Now the IHME model has the Louisiana peak much earlier, at 10 April, with few beds needed: covid19.healthdata.org
However, that model assumes that the social distancing and lockdown are tightly enforced, and the latest projections from Louisiana are based on what happens if people don’t obey the governor’s mandate.
Reality will probably be between the two extremes. But the IHME model has under predicted the actual Louisiana measured events, and I suspect that April 10th will come and go and Louisiana will be in several more weeks of deep problems.

Checking that site, Minnesota is almost set. With just a little less than 3 weeks to our projected peak on April 22, we only need 178 ICU beds - and information released by the governor suggests that they can turn up 1000+ beds within 24 hours of the order being given. The projected daily peak of deaths is 36/day and less than 1000 total. This blue state is fully prepared to lead by example.

I am scared out of my wits though about the prospect of going inside a building (where the virus can hang around rather than getting blown away by the wind) talking with people whose history I have no idea of knowing, and by necessity taking off any mask I wear to get my picture taken, and ditto gloves to get my finger prints checked.

It is up to you where you want to draw the line. There are no guarantees that you can avoid COVID-19 when you are out and staying at home is the best way to safeguard yourself. That said, a few things to consider:
a) to what extent would it be possible for you to isolate yourself from your parents within the house? If they made food for you but left it outside your door? Could you create a small sub-area inside the house where you could spend two weeks after the visit to get the card dealt with?
b) the risk when out in public, especially if you are diligent about washing hands/using hand sanitizer/wearing a mask whenever possible, is such that, paired with a sufficient ability to isolate within the house from you parents, I think it’s fair to consider whether you could make it work. Consider that, although this virus is contagious, it’s not so contagious that living in the same household as someone who has it is a guarantee of catching it - the rate for that is between 10 and 35%, depending on the study. It’s going to be considerably less out in public, especially if you are aware of the risk and taking measures to mitigate it.
That said, you’re the one who has to judge it for yourself - no one else can make that decision. Sending you lots of support no matter what.

Get a set of painters coveralls. Tape the legs around your socks. Gloves. mask. Hood or hat. En-route to business, stop at hotel & rent a room. Put known clean cloths there. Do your business. On the way hope stop back at hotel. go to room.
Take off other cloths and dispose of them. Shower. Take off cloths and dispose of them. Change into known clean cloths. continue to mask and glove up if concerned. Go home.Essentially very similar to what we were taught for chemical warfare in the Army, though be glad you’re not wearing the charcoal impregnated suits we had then (still do? I wonder.)

re: #241 Eclectic Cyborg
I was just thinking that exact thing. It’s like the scene in V for Vendetta where they send the Guy Fawkes masks out to everyone and one dude uses his to knock off a Convenience store.
What about all the cities that were so terrified of ANTIFA that they passed no-mask ordinances?

I have no useful advice, but I can relate in part. I’ve been to the grocery store 3 times in the past 3 weeks, and each time I feel like Robert De Niro and Christopher Walken playing Russian Roulette in The Deer Hunter. I get in and out as fast as I can, and I don’t make wise choices. It sucks more ass than a purpose-built, crew-served, belt-fed, liquid-cooled, computer-assisted ass sucking device could ever hope to suck, and I’l be happy if things ever return to somewhat normal.

President Trump’s bodiness deserves to be dipped in bronze.
He means the recession is artificially induced, that’s a thing business pundits have been saying. He ONLY cares about money, not life. The issue is that no matter what precautions I take it is still a possibility, and I am too much of a coward to want to ever experience the emotional trauma of “you killed your parents so you could get a paycheck” when I’ve got more than enough money in the bank to just cower at home for a few months.
Also sadly I still don’t have my own driver’s license so I’d need to either get a cab/uber or have one of them drive me to the spot.
As for living in a private quarter, that could only really work if I kicked them out of their bedroom because it has a directly attached bathroom while mine is across the hall from my bedroom.

Can you offer yourself as a test case for developing a new remote process for getting the CAC?
re: #85 Yeah Sure WhatEVs
An “Act of God” to absolve them of any responsibility?
Blue cross blue shield just emailed me yesterday to tell me all out of pocket costs are now covered for covid 19. I suspect it isn’t altruism. More likely, they know this could very well be the straw that breaks the camel’s back, if millions of healthy people suddenly discover they’re on the hook for thousands upon thousands of dollars.
re: #358 jamesfirecat
Guys I need/want your sage advice, or at least a chance to scream into the void.
I was lucky enough to get a job offer in early March that hasn’t been terminated and allowed me to start working again in late March after loosing my old job mid February.
There’s just one catch, I need to get a CAC (Common Access Card) which is something I’ve done two or three times before.
Now though… now I’ve managed to hunker in my home with my two parents since early March, and all of us are hale and healthy because we started practicing social distancing/sheltering in place way before it was the official order of the day in our state.
We’ve figured out how to order large quantities of food and other necessary supplies from distributors and the few activities that require us to interact with others can be done in ways that are more or less extremely unlikely to allow for the disease to be passed along (get needed medication in CVS drive through while wearing gloves and masks, have bottle placed in plastic container, leave container in car for several days)
I am scared out of my wits though about the prospect of going inside a building (where the virus can hang around rather than getting blown away by the wind) talking with people whose history I have no idea of knowing, and by necessity taking off any mask I wear to get my picture taken, and ditto gloves to get my finger prints checked.
I’m not so much worried about myself because I’m not in the category of those in extreme danger, but as noted I’m sheltering in place with my parents. I don’t know what my mental state would be like (other than bad) if me going out to get a CAC caused me to contract COVID and then pass it along to them and get one or both of them killed.
So right now in an email chain with my new boss I’m slowly but steadily building up to that being the red line I can’t cross and hoping that I’ll get lucky and they’ll be willing to bend/find some other way to keep me onboard…. because as some of you may remember I am the privileged Cis White Het Male Protestant Upper Middle Class child of two parents who are still married and alive who managed to pay off all their college loans less than three years out of college… I’m playing the game at life’s lowest difficulty setting where you still have to make an effort and the thought of loosing them BECAUSE OF SOMETHING I DID scares me way more than joining the shambling (well more like sitting) horde of unemployed… at least on a sane and rational level.
On an emotional level it sucks suck sucks to get fired for a concrete reason that you know if you just gave more of yourself you could avoid… but this is asking more than I think I can give right now….
So yeah, pity party table of Firecat… (blows steamer)
The fact is that this disease will *level*. That doesn’t mean disappear. That just means it will stop being hyperbolic and become chronic.
Everywhere.
I would just suggest that you wait for it to flatten in your state/county and then mask and glove up when you need to get out. Your chance of infection will be knowable, and less severe. Not zero, but knowable.
Protects you, and thus protects your parents. No guarantees, but a far less less chance than right now, where things are exponential. Be patient, be smart, and watch the curve.

See my other reply, the problem with this approach is that I don’t even have my own driver’s license yet… I suppose I could use a cab/uber to the location and back from it to the hotel, then have my parents pick me up after I’m done doing everything I can to clean myself, but I really feel like the juice isn’t worth the squeeze at this point and for my own mental well being (because I’d be willing to role the dice if it was just me, but not for my parents) I’m better of drawing a red line and sticking to it, even if I get fired for it, since it seems like there are few less bad times to be fired then right now when it is happening to so many other people….

More or less my plan in regards to when I’ll feel comfortable going into a building other than my house again.
In a few months or so people will still be getting sick from COVID-19 but there should be hospital beds and ventilators to go around if the worst comes to the worst….

My old friend and skeptic co-conspirator Gilbert is an ordained minister, as are my son-in-law and my brother. My harsh view of fundy pulpit pimps is partly informed by what I hear from them, and partly from my own observations. My brother in particular thinks the funda-nuts are heretics and obvious charlatans, practicing what he calls “folk theology” while Gilbert calls it “recycled peasant superstition.”
My dad always said the problem with fundamentalists is they take the Bible literally where it’s metaphorical, and metaphorically where it’s literal.

Yeah, the first thing I did was go look for a more reliable and respectable source of news. I found it. Here’s the Guardian:
Telecoms engineers are facing verbal and physical threats during the lockdown, as baseless conspiracy theories linking coronavirus to the roll-out of 5G technology spread by celebrities such as Amanda Holden prompt members of the public to abuse those maintaining vital mobile phone and broadband networks.
Facebook has removed one anti-5G group in which users were being encouraged to supply footage of them destroying mobile phone equipment, with some contributors seemingly under the pretence that it may stop the spread of coronavirus and some running leaderboards of where equipment had been targeted.
Video footage of a 70ft (20 metre) telephone mast on fire in Birmingham this week has also circulated widely alongside claims it was targeted by anti-5G protesters. Network operator EE told the Guardian that its engineers were still on site assessing the cause of the fire but it “looks likely at this time” that it was an arson attack.
There’s got to be a better word than Luddite. The Luddites were (rightly) afraid that their jobs were going away. These people are just nutters. Someone have a better word???
re: #151 Florida Panhandler
The rise of the Stone-Campbell Movement (a return to an idealized “early Christianity” i.e… entirely made up around Scots-Irish and existing Protestant American cultural norms and constraints) of the early 1800’s quickly grew and then led to the Dominionist hellscape we see today. They are primitive thinkers and ruthless. No amount of classical logic, intellectual reason, or fact-based evidence can sway their behavior or views. They are a broad enormous cult fed by a astroturfed Top-down/ groundswell circle jerk of support.
One clue is how much Baptists despise many of these groups, especially the Jonesers here in the upstate. People think of Baptists as being rigid fundamentalists, but honestly, the folks I work with are sometimes irritatingly conservative, but not given to quackery. Hell, First Baptist of Greenville has its own freakin’ orchestra, mostly composed of Furman faculty and students, and is probably what one would consider “high church” baptist, to the point where Furman told the Southern Baptist Convention to go bend itself around a tree. I mention this only because I know there is some naivete on the board concerning just how various denominations fit into the pantheon.

On the other hand (but I risk only myself), I cannot manage to worry that much about it. I go out every day to exercise (social distance and then some maintained), and usually stop in at least one place to pick up food or takeout (now that I’ve found the hand sanitizer). I change my clothes and wash my hands before I go out, keep my distance, don’t touch anything I don’t buy, and spend little time there. When I get home, I change and wash my hands again.
I’ve read that catching the virus is a very outside chance until you spend at least 15 minutes in close contact with someone. I haven’t seen any epidemiological studies yet (there hasn’t been time) but clusters of infections are coming from church meetings and dinner parties, not from random, brief contacts as far as I can see.
