Teddy's Person  Jun 13, 2020 • 4:48:18pm

Is this typical rhetoric coming out of North Korea or has Trump emboldened the Jongs?

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — The powerful sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un threatened military action against South Korea as she bashed Seoul on Saturday over declining bilateral relations and its inability to stop activists from floating anti-Pyongyang leaflets across the border.

Describing South Korea as an “enemy,” Kim Yo Jong repeated an earlier threat she had made by saying Seoul will soon witness the collapse of a “useless” inter-Korean liaison office in the border town of Kaesong.

Kim, who is first vice department director of the ruling Workers’ Party’s Central Committee, said she would leave it to North Korea’s military leaders to carry out the next step of retaliation against the South.

Kim’s harsh rhetoric demonstrates her elevated status in North Korea’s leadership. Already seen as the most powerful woman in the country and her brother’s closest confidant, state media recently confirmed that she is now in charge of relations with South Korea.

Just imagine for a moment how fucking hysterical the media would be going right now if Joe had the sort of public appearance Donny had today, between needing two hands to hold a glass of water, giving a garbled speech (and I don’t mean the “uhs” that Berners insist are a sign of dementia), and the shuffling walk down a ramp. They’d be demanding to see copies of his health records tonight.

I’ll assume that the off-camera narration in the last third of that video was something he said four years ago and not something he’s said recently. It’s a good add to have around but I don’t really care what Graham has to say about anything anymore.

It was good to be away from the computer today. I was thinking about the thread where a couple of folks talked about warming up for famous or soon-to-be famous bands. I have no such claims.

A band called Combo Audio from my hometown had a minor hit with a song called “Romanticide.” They wanted to do an all ages show and so reached out to us to warm up. They gave us “$20 apiece and you can get free cokes.” We had about 250-300 high school kids show up. Most of them left after we were done. Combo Audio got the door, which was a lot. But they got no new fans.

We warmed up a lot for our friends’ band The Vertebrats. They weren’t really famous, but they had a song on one of those “Battle of the Bands” albums [“Left in the Dark” was the song] that got covered by Uncle Tupelo, The Replacements, Courtney Love, and a grunge band called Screaming Trees. That’s as close as I can come to saying we warmed up for anyone with name recognition.

Admittedly I circle around this statement a great deal, but…there’s a kind of confession here. These were the people he used to market to, that he now characterizes as illiterate and malformed.

It’s almost like his skillset is selling to people by using lowest-common-denominator bullshit that tingles their primal identity circuits, and it’s almost like there’s some kind of link between a decade of people consuming this shit and, say, the entire “our feelings are facts” movement that’s fucking us all up….

So, I mailed out our NJ primary ballot yesterday. Sorry I don’t get the sticker. Not sorry that I am avoiding voting in person due to covid19 and knowing that there’s still a pandemic here.

I see signs of people letting their guard down all around, and it’s going to get us right back into lockdown mode even as the right wing lunatics claim that there’s no reason not to let a whole bunch of folks die so that they can get haircuts, go to bars, or otherwise engage in frivolous activities while essential workers are facing a daily risk of people who aren’t following protocols.

We’re going to hear about how AZ hospitals are maxing out capacity.

Most of the nation is trending poorly. All those fucking know nothing GOPers are hoping no one notices the bodies - the dead bodies - piling up and hospitals filling up, even in places that had things contained. AZ ICU units are nearing capacity. Cases are way up, and people are acting as though this is over?

We’re not even through the first wave, and it’s already too much of a burden to wear masks?

No, this is South Philly. They absolutely worship the guy. The city had to rename a huge stretch of Delaware Avenue (the street that was named for the river it’s run next to for like 300 years) for Columbus.

These guys are already hot from the both Rizzo statue and wall mural being taken down. They absolutely want this fight, and the police are going to let it happen.

For a long while, I had problems walking downstairs because of certain vision problems that finally were resolved after my final cataract surgery (took awhile to get both eyes done). We know that Trump is too vain to wear glasses in public. Maybe this just reflected eyesight issues.

Good evening fellow lizards.

Trying to get caught up here after a busy, but at least modestly productive, day.
I’m replacing the (25 year old) carpet in the walk out basement with carpet tiles. Unfortunately because it’s on concrete, the old carpet was stuck down with mastic, which I now get to remove. Also there is too much stuff in that room and it is 12’ x 24’ so there’s a lot of floor to deal with and a lot of stuff to work around.
Considering my age and general level of arthritis I’m allotting about 10 days to this particular project and hoping I don’t hurt myself. Why am I doing this? I’m not sure. I guess shelter-in-place has affected my judgement.

I also (finally) cut Mr. C’s hair. Which didn’t come out too badly, if I do say so myself. I didn’t cut it really short because a short bad haircut looks worse than a somewhat longer bad haircut and I can do this again if I need to.

How goes the revolution?

He’s upset if Democrats protest. He was fine with the militia protesting Governor Whitmer, and tried repeatedly to tell us how terrible she was. He worships Trump and disparages anyone who criticizes him. The one issue on which he doesn’t fully follow Trump is the pandemic — he has been absolutely fanatic about wearing a mask and gloves, but then his state opened and he is fine with dining out and visiting the gym.

Hiding Presidential ailments from the public is a longstanding tradition: Cleveland and
Wilson come to mind from the olden times, Kennedy more recently: the thing is that nowadays Presidents tend to live their lives under pretty much constant exposure ( especially a narcissistic camera hog like Trump): that this guy has had -and still has - some fairly obvious health problems ought to be glaringly apparent. Yet the WH and it’s creatures keep bullshitting them over, and the media keeps itself incurious. Which, somehow, I don’t think they would have with President Hillary Clinton: I’m guessing they would have kept up the campaign BS of treating every sniffle as a sign she was at Death’s door…..

Yes — but our brother doesn’t believe racism is a problem, especially among police departments. Our brother does not object to Chauvin’s arrest for murder, but I think he is trying to claim there is no justification for the protests.

Even if the murder were for totally non-racist reasons (assumes facts not in evidence), even if that were true, Chauvin still counted on racism to shield him from punishment.

If I were to want to murder somebody, for any reason, it certainly wouldn’t be in broad daylight in front of dozens of witnesses (at least one of whom I was well aware was filming it).

Police have routinely escaped their deserved punishment for killing of unarmed civilians, especially people of color, even when there was unambiguous evidence of their guilt. Chauvin thought this would be no different.

Disabled people get nervous when illness is mentioned on Twitter. My eyesight frequently betrays me on steps. I will never go down a flight of stairs without looking like an old man. (That said, I DO think Trump is Not Well.)

[Embedded content]

Can understand that, SH. I’m not disabled, but walking with a cane when I go outside these days because I don’t trust my arthritic knees. I could get inch down a ramp at that angle without a cane and with no guard rail — I think! — but I’d sure be watching every step of the way and breathing easier once I got to level ground. I really can’t fault an old man with lifts in his shoes for being cautious on that descent. I’m just rolling my eyes at the vain old man who just HAD to tweet back at the news coverage.

I’m a bit uncomfortable with armchair diagnoses of public figures, though it’s hard not to with Trump’s traveling symptom band putting on such an unnerving show. But it’s amazing how Trump and his minions are missing their chance! Many people have medical issues, as many here can attest. They have mini-strokes; they have cataracts; they have balance problems; they have sore knees and frozen shoulders and numerous ills to which the flesh is heir. If the idiots at the White House told us “Trump has ___ and it affects his balance/vision/etc,” many people would wince in sympathy and brush off physical quirks like stairs and stance — and thereby give them more leeway in obscuring the mental oddities. Maybe it’s just as well his fragile ego wouldn’t stand for that.

A likely Qnut stole a bulldozer in Cass County, Nebraska, and called the sheriff to stay out of his way, and to say he was going to the protests in Omaha to “tell the world” about “false information” the media and government are giving out.

Cass County man, accused of stealing bulldozer, says he was bound for Omaha to protest (Omaha World-Herald)

A Cass County man was arrested after he was accused of stealing a bulldozer from a construction site.

The driver, a 39-year-old man from rural Murray, called the Cass County 911 center just after 5:30 a.m. Friday and said he had obtained a bulldozer and was en route to Omaha to protest and deliver a message to the world about corruption and false information that he said the news media and the government are communicating.

The man warned everyone to stay out of his way, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office said.

The Sheriff’s Office was contacted at 6:55 a.m. and told that a bulldozer was driving in the grass shoulder off northbound U.S. Highway 75 near Rock Bluff Road.

Deputies tried to make contact with the man as he drove near the Plattsmouth Airport, but they weren’t successful, the Sheriff’s Office said. The man had fortified the inside of the bulldozer to protect himself and complicate efforts to get into the cab.

Authorities diverted the bulldozer onto a county roadway and reached the man on his cellphone, where they convinced him to stop and get out of the bulldozer, which had been stolen from a construction project in Murray.

The man was arrested in a soybean field about a half-mile south of Waverly Road near Highway 75.

starherald.com

There is an article in the Scottsbluff Star-Herald which is a long interview with a family in rural Sioux County having to adjust to homeschooling their three girls.

The girls normally ride the bus sixty miles round trip every day, but the consolidated school in Harrison is closed due to Covid-19, with no sign of schools reopening here soon.

Rural Sioux County used to have one-room or two-room schools until the school district was consolidated a couple decades ago.

The same goes for my village, which consolidated its three-room high school in 1963 and its elementary school (K-8) in 2012 for thirty+ mile round trip bus rides.

If this goes on (with apologies to Robert Heinlein) then I can see rural villages and areas restarting schools to deal with the issue of education. The consolidated school model for rural areas to “save money” fails under a long-term strain like this.

Poland ‘invades’ Czech Republic in ‘misunderstanding’ (BBC)

Poland has admitted to briefly invading the Czech Republic last month in what the Polish Defence Ministry described as a “misunderstanding”.

Polish troops guarding the frontier as part of coronavirus measures took up positions by a chapel on the Czech side of the border. They apparently stayed there for several days.

The soldiers prevented Czech visitors from accessing the site.

Czech authorities eventually intervened by contacting Warsaw.

The incident took place in north-eastern Moravia, in an area that forms part of the historical land of Silesia - part of which extends into today’s Czech Republic.

Poland has described the incident as a mistake, although the Czech Foreign Ministry has said it has yet to receive an official explanation.

Details follow in the article.

Yeah, that story has been met with some bemusement in my area - it’s not too far from where that occurred. The Polish soldiers, according to local media, stated they had permission to enter Czech territory and establish a position inside the Czech Republic as the Polish side of the border was unsuitable for that.

Nonetheless, when the Czech police showed up and straight-up ordered them to leave, the Polish soldiers promptly complied.

Trump started touting a Harvard study repeated by FOX claiming the Covid-19 virus actually started circulating in Wuhan in August, rather than the reported December.

The BBC notes serious flaws in the non-peer reviewed study, which counted cars at six hospitals and highways in the area and increased searches for the Chinese word for “symptoms of diarrhorea” rather than the more common word “diarrhoea” on China’s platform Baidu.

The BBC fact-checked the claim after Baidu said the search for “diarrhoea” was actually lower during the period of the study, using Baidu’s search tools and found the Baidu clam to be correct.

Expect conservative parrots to start claiming the non-peer reviewed Harvard study is proof of a Chinese cover-up.

A lead author of the Harvard paper Benjamin Rader told the BBC that “the search term we chose for ‘diarrhoea’ was chosen because it was the best match for confirmed cases of Covid-19 and was suggested as a related search term to coronavirus”.

We also looked the popularity of searches for “fever” and “difficulty in breathing”, two other common symptoms of coronavirus.

Searches for “fever” increased a small amount after August at a similar rate to “cough”, and queries for “difficulty in breathing” decreased in the same period.

There have also been questions raised about the study using diarrhoea as an indicator of the disease.

The question raised about diarrhoea is that it’s the seventh-most commonly reported symptom of the disease.

Fact-checking claims coronavirus might have started in August 2019

Coronavirus: Racism ‘could play a part in BAME Covid deaths’ (BBC)

TL;DR, the Conservative Party buried a report showing racism as a component in disease and deaths from coronavirus, along with resistance to gather better data based on race.

Coronavirus: ‘Scandal’ BAME review recommendations ‘buried’ (BBC, half an hour ago)

Earlier this morning, UK shadow justice secretary David Lammy told the Andrew Marr Show it was a “scandal” that the recommendations of a report on the impact of coronavirus on people in black, Asian and minority communities had been “buried”.

A leaked Public Health England draft report cited racism as a possible factor in why people of such backgrounds are at increased risk of dying of the virus.

Lammy told the Marr Show it was “horrifying” and accused the government of having “buried” recommendations from the report.

“It’s horrifying that at the moment, across this country, it’s hard to be black or Asian and not know someone, or someone who knows someone, who has died.

“I’ve lost an uncle. I’ve lost a classmate who died at 45 due to this terrible virus.

“The point is, it’s a scandal if one week Boris Johnson and Matt Hancock say ‘Black Lives Matter’ and then we find out today that they buried part of the review that had the recommendations in it to do something about it.”

He added: “Get on with it because people are dying every day and you said ‘Black Lives Matter’. It’s no wonder why people are upset.”

Chancellor Rishi Sunak said the report would be published next week.

Part of the problem of homeschooling during the pandemic is lack of Internet service (or the extreme cost) in rural areas of my state.

The Omaha Public School district is providing tens of thousands of iPads for students to connect to teachers and on-line resources.

Live out here though, you get this:

“I saw people online, on Facebook saying that their lives slowed down due to COVID, and I felt like ours just sped up,” Sheila said.

Without the family’s recent technology updates, an Internet connection would have been unlikely.

A couple of months prior to the school closures, the family had a signal booster installed to amplify 4G and 3G LTE signals and also got new Wi-Fi. After COVID-19 hit, the family’s Internet provider waived overage fees during the last few school months, which brought the family’s bill from about $400 to $257.

“If we didn’t have that booster, we wouldn’t have anything out here,” Sheila said.

Even with the booster, the Internet struggled to connect during the week when used by all three kids.

She lives in a more remote area than I do, as evidenced by her Internet provider’s bill (hers after the waivers is about 2/3 again as much as mine).

Internet access across Nebraska varies widely by community and families (Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald)

With 2-year-old twins and their five siblings at home, Jessica Valdase has her hands full.

“It’s very busy,” the Omaha single mom said. “I feel like a cook, a cleaner, a teacher, a hairdresser — I’m everything.”

This spring she added another job title: Internet subscriber.

Forced by the pandemic to work at home, and having no Internet subscription, she bit the bullet and signed up in April.

It added a $69 bill to the monthly pile, stretching her already modest paycheck working as a device agent in a phone-related company, she said.

“That’s extra money out of the pocket,” Valdase said.

Seattle Seahawks’ Pete Carroll says team called him asking about Colin Kaepernick (The Oregonian)

Seattle Seahawks’ coach Pete Carroll revealed on Thursday that a team called him asking for information about Kaepernick. Carroll added that the call marked the first time a team had called him about the quarterback.

“After all of the time - the years that have past, I never received a phone call about him. I never talked to another head coach about him. I never talked to anybody about him, until today,” Carroll told reporters Thursday. “I got a phone call today - I won’t tell you who it was. I got a phone call today, asking and inquiring about the situation. I know somebody’s interested. We’ll see what happens with that.”

I am not a sportsball fan. That said, if Mr. Kaepernick can get back in the NFL, that would show another crack in the wall of Wingnuttia on racism.

Speaking after more than a week of demonstrations against the police killing of George Floyd, a Black man in Minneapolis, Patrick tried to pin the nation’s long and deep-rooted racial problems on people not being religious enough ― and more specifically, “the left” not accepting Jesus Christ.

Patrick said on Fox News that Floyd’s killing and the unrest breaks his heart and that it’s an issue of “loving God.”

“You cannot love your fellow man if you don’t love God,” he said. “And we have a country where we’ve been working really hard, particularly on the left, to kick God out.”

Patrick also said laws can’t fix racism, only Jesus and God can:

“You cannot change the culture of a country until you change the character of mankind. And you can’t change that unless you change the heart, and for billions of us on the planet, we believe you can’t do that unless you accept Jesus Christ or unless you accept God. God has been left out of this equation through all of this and we need tremendous healing. We cannot heal through commissions and blue-ribbon panels and more laws.”

Meanwhile, the entire reason that Southern Baptism exists is because Southern “Christians” decided in the decades prior to the Civil War that when it came to a choice between Christ’s teachings and keeping fellow human beings in bondage, they supported the latter and came up with BS excuses for why Christ would be totally okay with it.

The Southern Baptists were the most vocal about it, but most Christian sects made the same split over slavery.

Dan Patrick apparently hasn’t read the Declaration of Causes from the State of Texas on why they seceded from the Union, with all its Bible citations.

Meanwhile, it isn’t just Republican wingnuts with their bigotry:

Catholic Brain Surgeon and Evolution Denier: “COVID-19 Is Atheism Gone Viral” (Friendly Atheist)

The coronavirus pandemic has occasioned a pandemic of another sort: anti-religious hate.

A bold claim — but not one that Egnor, in his piece, makes the slightest attempt to support. He’s too busy galloping to the task at hand: slandering unbelievers.

He is responding to a remark by Stephen Pinker. Pinker’s an asshat, but his observations about Christian bigotry are true.

It wouldn’t be a plague without Christians attacking heretics for not looking to Christ to save them from something that is easily addressed through basic common sense. Wear a mask and keep a distance from others? “Fuck that, I don’t wanna wear a mask or stay away from the bars, I’ll ask God to protect me!”

Despite the overwhelming evidence that churches are sources of outbreaks which spread through the towns they are in, preachers of all faiths keep blaming their own parishioners’ lack of faith or the secular evils of the town they are in.

Last week the largest Catholic cathedral in Nebraska reopened (it isn’t just wingnut Fundamentalist churches spreading disease). I’m expecting a spike in cases in Omaha soon. (That wasn’t the only Catholic church: the Diocese of Omaha said all churches could open for normal Mass. The same goes for the authorities of every Protestant denomination in this state, and the Greek Orthodox as well.)

To the credit of our Lutheran Church here in town, they ignored the suggestions from their overseers and remain closed.

I never get tired of bringing up the church scene in The Stand (both the novel and miniseries), when the clean-up crew in Boulder have to clean out corpses from the pews. People dressed in the Sunday best, still lining the seats where they dropped dead while praying for salvation that never came. And the guy in charge of the clean-up remarking about how such scenes were common during the Black Death, as the faithful were told that only through prayer and supplication could they could be saved from death.

Our brother is going with a new RW talking point that Floyd’s murder was not racially motivated at all: Derek Chauvin and George Floyd knew each other from their prior work history at the bar; Floyd was aware Chauvin was a dirty cop working for drug dealers. Out of concern that Floyd was going to snitch on him, Chauvin killed him out of a totally non-racist motivation

that sounds perfectly reasonable to me. doesn’t mean it also wasn’t systemically racist that 4 cops were allowed to daylight lynch the guy in front of witnesses, who were yelling that they were killing him, and that it was only video evidence that convinced a reluctant prosecutor to reach down and discover that he actually had two stones, a spine, and at least a small degree of intestinal fortitude.

I frequently mix cheap wine with Kool-Aid to improve the flavour. I call it Wine+.

Moving on to one of my other hobby horses (instead of bigotry).

The CDC found that about 33% of African-Americans and Hispanic-Americans living under 200% of the poverty line, plus single, divorced, or had less than a high school diploma have not seen a neurologist about their active epilepsy.

Those who have access to neurologists are able to access treatments to suppress seizures.

The CDC noted that only 67% of all persons with active epilepsy (I fit in that category) have seen a neurologist in the last year. The most likely indicator of a person seeing a neurologist (and thus receiving treatment if it can be administered) is living in the Northeast, age 18-34, at least some college education, over age 65. Consequentially, those with the least chance of receiving treatment were the opposite of those, unemployed, or homeless.

As such, the Epilepsy Foundation is giving “mini-grants” ($10,000 or less) to applicants to help reach minority populations so they can access treatment which is not available to them.

Based on estimates from the CDC 2017 Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report and 2018 Census Data, approximately 32% of African Americans and Hispanics are living with epilepsy [living with in this context means untreated rather than the total population], and 42% of all racial and ethnic populations combined are living with active epilepsy in America.

The Epilepsy Foundation wants to increase the community and clinical linkages between minority populations impacted by epilepsy and existing epilepsy resources, including self-management programs. The purpose of the Minority Outreach Mini-Grantee Program is to promote effective and impactful engagement with minority and racial and ethnic populations to increase awareness of epilepsy education and resources and link more diverse individuals living with epilepsy to care.

As such, EF is providing $100,000 for grants again this year.

The mini-grant application is due to Thometta Cozart no later than Friday, July 10, 2020, via email to tcozart@efa.org. If you have questions regarding the packet, please contact Multicultural Outreach Director Thometta Cozart MS, MPH, CHES, CPH at tcozart@efa.org.

Corporate greed coupled with a lack of government subsidies that I would imagine that those African governments paid out to get that kind of service.

The major sports leagues are all trying desperately to return to “normal” to coup some of their losses or avoid major losses in the latter half of the year, but the new reality is that “normal” means the very real possibility that one or more players could end up infected per game. And since it’s pretty much impossible to quarantine every team for 2 weeks between games, what you’re asking is for players to gamble with their lives every game.

But Gary Bettman is a dick, and the NHL is really their own worst enemy.

My thing is, the NHL wants to do this abbreviated 24 team playoff but they don’t even have full squads practicing on the ice yet which means the earliest we could see actual games would probably be late next month or early August. So if it’s August 8th and we’re just starting a 24 team playoff the end of this season is going to crash right into the next one and how the fuck is that going to work?

I know there’s a lot of money involved but for safety’s sake it’s probably better to scrap this season and just have no champion (which is what happened during the last major pandemic) then see about getting your shit together for the fall.

As someone who was using internet services at quite reasonable costs five years ago on the Ivoirian/Liberian border I’d recommend that you investigate why it’s so difficult to do things in the US that can be done in poor African countries.

Corporate greed coupled with a lack of government subsidies that I would imagine that those African governments paid out to get that kind of service.

Nope, no way that the government of the Ivory Coast pays subsidies to mobile telephone companies, it’s the other way around, the mobile telephone companies pay big taxes to the government. The trick is competition — there are 3 or 4 (I forget) companies providing mobile telephone and internet services.

I’m curious what the new miniseries adaptation of The Stand is going to look like. The novel was originally published in ‘78 with the events set in ‘80, before the “uncut” version was released in ‘90 with the events moved up to the same year. And the ABC miniseries came out in ‘94, which was before the Internet Boom, which meant most forms of news broadcast were still either TV or radio. So how a book written when computers were still largely the realm of business or hobbyists is updated to the Digital Age should be interesting.

To Talk, Or Not, by John Scalzi

The current push to get celebrities/musicians/artists to comment on hot button topics of the day. Scalzi’s blog is always interesting. He definitely has opinions.

One final note on the subject, which is that a choice by a creative person to be publicly silent on a matter is not necessarily indicative of their neutrality on the matter. A creative person (or any person) may actively have an opinion or support a cause, and choose to do so quietly, and again for any number of reasons (including not painting a target on those they are helping for abusers and trolls).

Which is another reason not to attach a value judgment to a public silence. All public silence means is that you don’t know what’s going on with that person. You may think you deserve to know, but no one else is obliged to agree with you, including the creative you may believe owes you an accounting or opinion.

Moore is much like Sanders (who he’s endorsed twice) in believing that the path forward for the Dems is bringing back the WWC, to the detriment of…well, virtually every other voting bloc the party has relied upon over the last 40 years. Jeez, I really had to hold my nose while reading that shit about Michael Moore (Breitbart, SRSLY?). Though I’m unsurprised that’s who President Anus would retweet.

But FWIW, I think Moore is conceptually correct - there IS a large bloc of “angry white males” Out There - (Beckys and Karens, too) - we here would probably shorthand them as the “flyover state gun-goober vote”, but still, they:

1) are too large a voting bloc to ignore.
2) tend mainly to (reflexively) vote their prejudices, not their interests.
3) wrap their extremist politics in the mantle of religion.
4) have clung, and will cling desperately to Trump and the GOP as the sole political outlet they will tolerate - mainly because 3).

The thing is, though, other than stating the obvious - WTF is Moore trying to say? That we have to coddle the Bigot Bloc or else they’ll get violent if when Trump loses?

They didn’t want to be Americans when they raised that flag. There are 260,000 Brazilians of American descent. Know why a lot of them are there? Brazil didn’t abolish slavery until the 1880’s and a lot of these Confederates never wanted to live in the US again.

Yep. And I’m gonna be careful around a few of my neighbors. One is a AA baseball player and he’s unfortunately the most likely vector at this stage for me getting exposed.

So much of American history is NOT taught to American children. Another friend, responding to a post of mine on the Jefferson Davis statue being taken out of the KY Capitol bulding, said that a lot of the statues outside the South were put there between 1870 and 1925 as a conciliatory measure.

So I said, Yeah, and I’m sure this is just a coincidence, but that period also saw the rise of the KKK to a position of national prominence, not just in the South, but across the North as well.

How many Americans know that the KKK marched in Washington DC in 1926, not like the Skokie march - a few defiant idiots, booed and heckled by everyone, but as a fully accepted, politically acceptable, nationwide organization? I didn’t! It’s like the significance of Tulsa in American history - I didn’t really know about it till the last few years.

This is why we need Black History Month - because the 11 White History Months every year don’t teach us what we need to know.

I know lots of people love _The Stand_. I personally found it underwhelming. It started with a SF end-of-the-world scenario with some nice Stephen King twists tossed in. And then morphed into a long supernatural religious thing. And ended with a literal deus ex machina. (Which to me implied that a bunch of the characters you’d been brought along to support were essentially sacrificed for what I would argue was no apparent reason.) So overall I saw it as a very long and mediocre SF novel that went pretty far off the rails by the end.

I also viewed the end of Narnia novels in this light. First of all, I was young enough and ignorant enough of religious stuff that most of the allegory went over my head. And then, at the end, all this stuff goes down and the God (Aslan) is still a dick to a bunch of people (like the dwarves in the stable) because they didn’t believe in him enough.

that sounds perfectly reasonable to me. doesn’t mean it also wasn’t systemically racist that 4 cops were allowed to daylight lynch the guy in front of witnesses, who were yelling that they were killing him, and that it was only video evidence that convinced a reluctant prosecutor to reach down and discover that he actually had two stones, a spine, and at least a small degree of intestinal fortitude.

It’s not just because they had video evidence; it’s because the video evidence went public and they couldn’t conceal what happened. Otherwise they would have buried the case.

Leaving aside his obvious mental decline, he’s got serious physical issues. Another reason to laugh when Red Hats look to this turd as some sort of super alpha male.

He’s an old man, and he’s falling apart. I hope voters will start paying attention to it.

It’s not his physical limitations that should be the concern — it’s his views and policies that are the problem. The ‘senility’ bit is Trumpian projection. Every time you see Trump accuse an opponent of something, it’s because it’s one of Trump’s weaknesses and he’s trying to defuse it for himself and use it to paint/define the opponent.

She’s good at what she does, bringing people together and getting them organized. Dem groups here could take lessons from her.

My sister was not a particular fan until she heard Abrams speak a couple months ago and was very impressed with her. But as others have said, Abrams doesn’t have sufficient experience. Given Joe’s age, we need as VP someone much younger, dynamic, and with substantial state-wide experience.

Even that’s not a guarantee. There’s a theory I’ve seen fairly recently that attempts to provide an explanation for Fermi’s Paradox (ie if we lifeforms are not alone in the Universe, and given how big and old the Universe is, how come we’ve heard from anyone yet?).

It’s called the “Dark Forest” theory, named after the 2008 sci-fi novel by Liu Cixin.

Basically, the long and short of the theory is: any sufficiently advanced civilisation in space/time is going to think: “Wait a sec- do we want to advertise our presence across the Universe? Especially if it’s to other alien civilisations, who might be more advanced than us, and could, therefore, subjugate us?”

Every so often I get a bee in my bonnet and obsess on some new thing. I can never predict what it’s going to be. For example, back in 2007, after buying a perfectly nice new bike (my carbon fiber Bianchi 928, “Plastic Fantastic”), and having my 1995 Ritchey Road Logic (“Old Tom”) repainted, I became obsessed with finding a lugged steel, Columbus MAX frame and building it up with Campagnolo kit. I spent a month finding the frame, and a couple more months acquiring all the bits, piece by piece, on Ebay. That became “Dreadnought”.

Interestingly, that coincided with my old company going through a really bad year, wherein they laid off about half the staff, 3 times, but each time, I survived. So, obviously a stressful time and perhaps my mind was using this to provide another focus.

Fast forward to today. For the last week, I have been OBSESSED with finding a 1999 - 2002 Litespeed Ultimate, either a frameset or a bike, to rebuild. I’d actually wanted on back when that would have been new.

So, for the last week, I find myself haunting Ebay, even wondering whether I could drive to Michigan to buy the one that says “Local Pickup Only”. Yesterday, I looked at the local Craigs List and there was one just down the Peninsula in Los Altos. It was my size. It was EXACTLY the year I want (curved seatstays, straight seat tube with indentation made for the rear wheel to shorten the chainstays, threadless headset). I almost went for it, but dawdled, and it was gone.

But I’m still obsessed!!! What the fuck do I need with a FOURTH bike? I don’t ride but 3 days a week max!

Anyway, there’s a glimpse of what goes on in my head. Thank you for your indulgence. Now it’s time to go ride a bike I actually own!

Anyway, there’s a glimpse of what goes on in my head. Thank you for your indulgence. Now it’s time to go ride a bike I actually own!

My 1989 steel-frame Bianchi Giro came with beautiful Campagnolo kit. But the shifting was always a bit imprecise, so my brother swapped a spare Dura-ace set of shifters and it made all the difference. Now, though, I’d have to plunge a few hundred into it get bottom bracket fixed, new brake lines, etc. I’m starting to save for a new bike. I loved that old bike, though.

Wasn’t there a rally at MSG with Nazi flags and crap on the stage behind the podium? Charles Lindbergh also has Nazi connections that got left out of my education and I had some in depth classes in high school. Education has been whitewashed and cleaned up to the point that even the Trail of Tears makes it sound like a friendly movement of people from one place to the other. It really needs to stop.

JFC Michael Moore. We already know that there’s no way to win over Trump’s white male rageoids. I don’t think we’re underestimating them, we’re trying to GOTV with everyone who is NOT them. They can go fuck themselves down to 27% of totally committed Trumpers. Is Moore saying that dems should focus more on the needs of angry white males?

I think Moore’s endgame is to get Bernie nominated, no matter what the cost. I don’t even think Bernie getting wiped out in the general would matter to people like Moore, because they then can climb on their “Well, America, you should have listened to us” high horse.

There’s a similar ongoing problem with coverage of Biden over at jezebel.com. The staff is “Bern it all to the ground”. They claim that they will support Biden, but every article they write about him gets twisted into “Look at this rapist monster, he’s no better than Trump/Bush/Obama/Hitler.”

In defense of both subjects above: I do think there’s still a danger of underestimating Trump, or specifically the hate he empowers; and Biden is absolutely not beyond criticism. Hell, I got downdinged here four years ago saying Trump had a genuine shot of winning, based on my interactions with both-siders and angry white dudes here in “liberal” NJ.

But you watch: as the convention in whatever form it takes gets closer, expect people like Moore to ratchet up the “Biden’s too weak to take Trump, we need to feel the BERN” propaganda.

He left the dwarves sitting where they were with paradise all around them, which they refused to see. Not my idea of dickishness. All those people/animals who went off into Aslan’s shadow, on the other hand…

(Haven’t read The Stand. Tried once.)

re: #385 Hecuba’s daughter

“Fantasy” is a difficult category to pin down, though I don’t mind it in general. King straddles dark fantasy/SF throughout his career, and often even within a book. The Stand is one of those - the first half is just brilliant EotW narrative, laced with bits of fantasy weirdness to turn it into proper horror.

When the characters get to Iowa, it seems to disintegrate into juvenile social commentary - not awful but not really interesting to me. And then the confrontation in Vegas is just… ugh. I didn’t mind killing off the characters, but “god only acts if someone is (literally) there (on site) to beg for it” is not good theology in any religion I’ve studied and is about the most useless statement about how to face evil of any variety I’ve ever come across.

The book that really sold me on King was IT. The personalized, localized flavor of cosmic horror (and all the clown tropes it spawned) worked well through the whole novel, and the resolution felt just right. Drawing of the Three also was a book that clinched my fandom. The mix of realism, straight horror, and high-concept fantasy grabbed me hard and didn’t let go. I don’t like everything in the Dark Tower novels, but they’re a fabulous synthesis of many strands in modern popular and literary fiction.

Officially, the National Memorial Arch.

The United States National Memorial Arch, located in Valley Forge National Historical Park, Pennsylvania, is a monument built to celebrate the arrival of General George Washington and the Continental Army at Valley Forge. Valley Forge was the military camp 18 miles northwest of Philadelphia where the American Continental Army spent the winter of 1777-78 during the American Revolutionary War. Starvation, disease, malnutrition, and exposure killed more than 2,500 American soldiers by the end of February 1778.

The arch was designed by Paul Philippe Cret and was dedicated June 19,1917. He also designed the Main Building (“the Tower”) at the University of Texas at Austin.

My sister was not a particular fan until she heard Abrams speak a couple months ago and was very impressed with her. But as others have said, Abrams doesn’t have sufficient experience. Given Joe’s age, we need as VP someone much younger, dynamic, and with substantial state-wide experience.

I kind of agree, but Obama’s experience was about six years in the state legislature and part of one Senate term, Compared to her ten years in her state legislature., i.e ten legislative years each.

I actually met Charles Lindbergh at Edwards AFB in the early 60s. He was a guest for some ceremonial occasion. I remember him as a tall, thin, and rather shy man. Like the infamous Anastasio Somoza (whom I have also met) he was gracious and friendly but he lacked Somoza’s charm. I heard that some of the still numerous World War II veterans at the base were less than thrilled with his presence, while the Cold War generation officers thought he was god. Eisenhower had rehabilitated him in the 50s, restoring his military rank. By the time I met him, he was a Brigadier General of the AF Reserve, but he never wore a uniform.

ME: Yes, Biden has convinced me to vote for him, but even if he hadn’t, he’s the best chance to make sure we don’t get Trump.
THEM: But if his beliefs don’t align with yours, why vote for him? Vote third party.
ME: No, that’s a waste of a vote. Trump-humpers will never vote for a third party (or anyone except a Republican), and there are too many of them to be able to afford voting third party.
THEM: But if we all vote third party, then the third party will win, and the wheel will be broken.
ME: You’ve been trying for years and it hasn’t worked. We need to vote for the Democrat until we’ve changed the landscape to allow third parties to be viable.
THEM: But I don’t like Biden and we can start changing things now if we vote third party.
ME: … [Internally: “That’s not how this works. That’s not how any of this works.”]

A lot of the people I’ve met who argue that loop are simply trying to justify their protest vote and not getting what they “want”. And, for the most part, they are not politically active and not actually lifting a finger to help their favored third party on either or local or national level.

It’s not about liking Biden. It’s about choosing the candidate who will be in office that can make the changes you want.

Here’s my personal example. Harris was my first choice, and Warren was my second. Biden was my third. When it came time to vote in Texas’s primary, with the choice between Biden, Warren, and Sanders, I voted for Biden. Why? Because at that moment, the choice was coming down to Biden or Sanders, and I did not want Sanders as the nominee.

The other is Trevorton.
Think of it that way. Local talk.

Trouble is, Port is Williamsport. I guess I’ll just have to be extra careful. I also have Mifflinburg and Mifflinville to deal with.

To all of you Americans running around without masks:

You’re the same nation that had Barack Obama and replaced him with an Adderall chewing, white supremacist game show host.

Sorry if I don’t trust any decisions you make.

I took my scooter out for a ride today and stopped at a Gyros place that had some outdoor seating and I could stay about 20’ from the only other diners. I wore my mask when I ordered, but took it off at the table and then forgot to grab it when I left. There were a couple other places I wanted to stop but I decided I couldn’t do it without a mask, so I need to go out again later. Realizing that I was out in public without a mask felt like potential danger.

Call Williamsport Billtown. Trevorton is coal. Port is river.
Mifflin has a burg, ville, town and county.
Go to Oriental and ask where the Oriental Hotel stood.

Billtown is soooo yesterday. The hep kids all call it the Port. Where is Oriental? I know Urban - which ain’t - and Pillow. My favorite town name in the state is Shunk. Sounds like an arrow hitting its target. They have a post card for sale there that is totally black. The opposite side says “Shunk at night”.

Serious question.
I am not voting for Trump or Biden as neither of these old men are in any shape to be managing a country.
I will likely vote Green Party as it aligns closely with my progressive views.
Am I considered a “Resister”?

Today in boogaloser news (Loveland CO):
ROOFING COMPANY WORKERS FORCED ONTO GROUND, HELD AT GUNPOINT BY MAN WHO THOUGHT THEY WERE ANTIFA

“The men weren’t troublemakers - they work for a local roofing company and were wearing blue polo shirts with the firm’s name on them, shorts, tennis shoes and white surgical-style masks, (police chief) Shaffer said.

One of them is a Colorado State University football player who is 20 years old and works part-time at the roofing company. The student is a ‘man of color,’ according to a statement from the university.”

CNN

“It has been a rough period for President Trump and the military leaders with his former defense secretary, retired Marine General James Mattis, assailing him for dividing the country — a sentiment given an ‘Amen’ by Trump’s former chief of staff, retired Marine Gen. John Kelly — not to mention criticisms from Gen. Colin Powell, Adm. Bill McRaven, Gen. Martin Dempsey, Gen. John Allen and Adm. Mike Mullen.”

“The President and his supporters have had plenty of nasty things to say about these men who have served our country, of course. No need for me to report them. You all have access to Twitter.”

“There is one group of generals, however, that the President is standing firm with, dead racist losers — more specifically, the Confederate commanders after whom 10 Army bases are currently named.”
