It’s always jarring to me that that old post office building is a Trump hotel. Romanesque architecture just doesn’t mesh with Trump’s frilly idea of ‘style’. St. Paul has a mini-me version of that building designed by the same architect, and it is in one of the most charming areas of the downtown area. Even the smallest association with the Trump brand is nauseating.

As if we didn’t already know Trump and his people were assholes…

Trump has been eager to resume the rallies that are the centerpiece of his campaign. The president revels in his large crowds. The events let him vent and gauge the kind of rhetoric that will appeal to his ardent political base. They also help his campaign expand its voter databases and will serve as a contrast to Democratic challenger Biden, who has suspended campaign events because of the virus and hasn’t attracted the same size of crowds.

But the decision to pull the trigger now was driven, in large part, by the mass anti-racism protests that have taken place across the country in the wake of George Floyd’s death in Minneapolis. Campaign and White House officials say the protests — and the limited public health outcry they generated — gave them cover. If it was OK for tens of thousands of people to march through the streets, demanding racial justice, why can’t Trump rally his supporters, too?

Of course, the protests were held outside, with many participants wearing masks.

It bears repeating, but Minnesota has been continuing the trend of falling numbers and percentages of new COVID cases, even as the cases that would have arisen from the protests should have showed up this week.

Never, heh. I was very heads-down; I was a contractor, I was young and even more introverted than I am now, I didn’t have the kids until I was almost done with that job. I disliked being so far from home and really didn’t put as much effort into enjoying that city as I did when I finally got moved back into my company’s Minneapolis headquarters.

I figured Texans don’t like acknowledging they won on a sneak attack, but there’s also the fact that Houston didn’t want Texas to join the Confederacy.

Hard to get all swept up with victorious valor telling the tale of attacking a sleeping Army.

They could redo the Texas Revolution two hundred more times and the Texians would never had won it again. Santa Anna was an idiot and the Texians got lucky as hell

Smash burger refers to a cooking technique that goes back way farther than any of the fast food franchises you can name. A local dive bar made them that way 60 years ago - that I can attest to from personal knowledge.

On Sunday, Rep. Ilhan Omar appeared on CNN’s State of the Union and spoke with host Jake Tapper about the movement to defund the police and specifically, calls to dismantle the Minneapolis Police Department, which Minneapolis city council members voted to begin the process of replacing with a community-led initiative. In speaking to Tapper, Omar summed it up simply, saying, “You can’t really reform a department that is rotten to the root—what you can do is rebuild.” But the topic is a complex one, and Omar breaks down fuller details in the clip below.

The Democratic congresswoman’s main point? That real reform means something new has to be put into the place of the existing structures. That said, she stressed that the community still has needs for safety and that there needs to be an appropriate way of responding when people are in danger or when crimes occur. For Omar, it’s about replacing the infrastructure that is currently in place with something safer for everyone.

Tapper asked Omar, “Just to be clear, you’re not saying that there’s nothing that takes its place?”

In her own words, Omar clarified that common misconception: “No one is saying that the community is not going to be kept safe. No one is saying crimes will not be investigated. No one is saying that we are not going to have proper response when community members are in danger.”

“What we are saying is the current infrastructure that exists as policing in our city should not exist anymore,” she added. Omar also used San Francisco as a model example, saying, “they’re moving toward a process where there is a separation of the kind of crimes that solicit the help of officers and the kind of crimes that we should have someone else respond to.”

The subject of defunding the police has been divisive among Democrats. For example, when asked about calls from some popular Democrats to put more funds into police Omar suggested, “If you had a company that wasn’t producing, you wouldn’t just pour more money into it so that it would produce.” She continued: “You would step back and say, let’s look at what works, what doesn’t work, and how do we move forward.”

So, about the wildly innovative George Floyd memorial held in our Deep Su’thren town:

Organizers in the AA community got together with our totally non-stupid, sort of Republican mayor. They came up with the rally plan I posted about yesterday. A caravan was to assemble at the mall parking lot. I expected a hundred or so people to show, based on our history of dead-ender activism. Instead the staging area was jammed.

So, The city cops and Sheriff’s department enforced Lawn Order by issuing blue balloons to everyone so they could block intersections for the parade on the 5-mile trip through town. That engaged about half the police forces and cruisers. Our Voter Registration-mobile, wife driving:

So, we drove through the mall and commercial circle to the HS stadium (big parking lot). We were asked in the newspaper notice to maintain CV-19 smarts. There was no crowding because the FM soul station provided sound over our car radios for a succession of preachers, community folks and the Mayor to eulogize and testify. I counted 9 ranks of about 80 cars, and every freaking time the reverend (and the Mayor) called for an “Amen”, 700 cars hit their horns. We honked, we waved, we honored, and nobody got CV-19. The isolation was a bit too wide, so I only got to hand out a half-dozen or so VR forms.

What’s worrisome about Trump attacking VOA in particular is that they broadcast to a number of countries where there is no free press, in thirty-seven different languages.

Trump started attacking them over an AP report they put up on their Website and broadcast over shortwave.

In a lot of countries, VOA is considered like the BBC to be fair and impartial news. VOA isn’t really a thing in the USA.

If Trump can keep VOA from reporting straight news, then he can spread his propaganda using government assets and suppress information he doesn’t want told to all the countries in the world with no free press.

Texans would make a bigger deal about the victorious battle and defeat of Santa Ana’s army at San Jacinto, but they’re uncomfortable trying to pronounce it.

Except that the location* is not that good for visitors and they’ve let the USS Texas rust away at the location there with insufficient maintenance to the point that it was “move it (repair it), or lose it”.

Sigh. Are these same people getting bent out of shape over the insinuation that Joe is senile and stupid? Joe has a stutter and his “forgetfulness” is a pause to regroup and move past the stutter. He probably learned it in speech therapy as a kid. So the assholes are indeed making fun of a speech impediment. Maybe they could direct some of their pearl clutching to that shit.

Respect is earned. Donald Trump has done everything a human could do to repel respect. He supposed to be POTUS and the People have the right to know what’s going on.

Langston Hughes was a prophet.

“…America never was America to me,
And yet I swear this oath—
America will be!

Out of the rack and ruin of our gangster death,
The rape and rot of graft, and stealth, and lies,
We, the people, must redeem
The land, the mines, the plants, the rivers.
The mountains and the endless plain—
All, all the stretch of these great green states—
And make America again!”

The truth is, we are. The Nuremberg rallies are restarting and he will be on TV. This alone will start to swing polls back towards him. As things get closer to the election, CNN and other mainstream outlets will run more and more hit pieces on Biden, and people who are disgruntled with Trump now will be ‘reminded’ that they hate Democrats more.

US media has not yet really begun to fight for Trump’s re-election. They will, though, in earnest.

I’m not sure about that. His rallies are designed to only appeal to Deplorables. They’re nasty and ugly and showcase him at his worst — yelling incoherently, basking in derogatory audience chants, encouraging his supporters to violently attack protesters. They’re not widening his base.

No surprise. The 2nd Amendment was all about making sure southern owners could kill any slave who revolted.
