That article on polarization in the last thread jogged something in me. I quote:

n may 2016, a motorist named Cassy McWade had an accident on the interstate in western North Carolina and called her mechanic for a tow. The mechanic couldn’t come, so he sent a friend from another company. In due course, Ken Shupe, of Shupee Max Towing, reached her, but as he began preparing to tow her car, he noticed a Bernie Sanders sticker on the bumper. Shupe was a Trump supporter. He told McWade he would not accept her business, suggested (by one account) that she call the government for help, and drove away.

“I’m really not interested in doing business with that clientele,” he later told the local TV news station, WLOS. Asked if he thought it was fair to leave a motorist stranded, he replied, “It’s not fair, but it’s the norm nowadays. It’s the world in which we live.”

I remember this story, and the man. When this happened, Shupe said something even more obnoxious: “She [the disabled motorist] said she was disabled. I know the difference between someone who’s disabled and someone on disability” (emphasis added.)

I don’t know how I can be accused of “polarization” when there are orcs like that roaming the highways.

Rethinking Polarization

The most interesting graph I saw today was about a simple yes/no question:

Is the country moving in the right direction?

Back at the beginning of the year, 70-80% of self-identified Repubs were like, “Yeah! Fuckin’ A! USA! USA!

It’s now down to 20%.

That sounds suspiciously like the Mango Shit-gibbon has lost 75% of his enthusiastic supporters.

20% support of your policies in dealing with the direction of the country is not good. This is not good at all.

Are these people still *motivated* to get out there and make phone calls, walk neighborhoods, post fliers on doors, and support down-ballot races, when they they think the leadership at the top of the heap has failed so miserably?

The Dems need to keep hammering this point home in every race at every level. In this case reality is a mean bitch kitty, but it’s our mean bitch kitty.

Every R voter we make see the Leadership as useless is a voter that stays home. They don’t vote for the Mango Mussolini, and they don’t vote down ballot.

The coming debacle in Gwinnett County because of opening their schools this week should be telling.

Georgia leads the way!

There WILL be a huge increase in COVID cases in the County. In three weeks, deaths will start to spike, and the other side affects of COVID, especially among younger people, even if it doesn’t put you on a ventilator, which no one in the Government wants to even begin to talk about, will become apparent.

I figure in 5 or 6 weeks, there’s not going to be a school district in the country that will dare open schools until there is a real, functional vaccine that is widely distributed in this country so we can stop hiding behind our front doors.

Or, I could be wrong, and the virus will “magically go away”.

Nah, people in suburban Atlanta are going to be burying teachers, bus drivers, janitors, kitchen workers, each other, grandma, grandpa, and in may cases, their own kids, to show us Libs what a hoax this thing is.

Still want to vote for the R’s? Still even want to vote?

Get ready for Hell, Georgia. You’ve earned it for electing these fuckwits who are forcing you to kill each other.

“Those bell bottoms are WAY too large, they’re a hazard.” Seriously. I am not kidding. If memory serves, the max circumference allowed was 26 inches. (At least, that’s the number which is stuck in my head from 45 years ago.) Also granny dresses, spaghetti strap dresses, tank tops, t-shirts advertising anything except the school, gah…a lot of stress and for what?

ETA: I should see if my old high school still has a dress code and whether masks have been added to it.

ETA (2): Dunno about the masks, but they are STILL going on about spaghetti straps nearly half a century later. They have a “three finger rule” for the width of the strap.

But those “wrong direction” repubs haven’t lost enthusiasm for their shit-gibbon.

There’s no sports. Their kids aren’t in school. BLM is pulling lots of white supporters. They haven’t been to a rally in what feels like forever. All of which they blame on Dems. There’s cops being charged with murder! There’s people losing their jobs just for Karening! Because Soros and Gates have voodoo powers, and Fauci has hypnotized the governors!

They still love their mango Mussolini — they just think it’s bafflingly wrong and weird that the rest of us aren’t going about our lives grumbling to ourselves. They can’t lord it over us how “successful” their guy’s economy is doing.

Who do they blame for the mess we are in?

They blame Obama. The “Deep State”. Soros. Liberals. Hillary.

Their posts endlessly kiss Trump’s ass just like the Chinese during the “Cultural Revolution” endlessly praised Mao.

And they love how Trump kicks colored people and queers down. They live to see people they hate get hurt. Their comments on the latest George Floyd smear say that Floyd got what he deserved…and the police didn’t beat that N-CLANG enough.

My info may be way out of date, but ISTR you’d get 1/10 of 1¢ for every view (assuming there’s an ad to start your clip). So $1000 for every million views. And however many millions of fans, they’re watching several clips a week at minimum.

Plus, the big social media stars also get good money for product placement in their clips, and personal appearances, and maybe they’re doing mail-order merch.

They send SWAT teams for anything. They got them, might as well use them; it’s not like he’s old money or anything. We’ll know soon enough what’s it’s about.

What’s weird is reports are saying that no arrests were planned. WTH? If you’re going to roll in with SWAT you better be sure enough to arrest someone.

a) Make interesting content, and start gaining followers. For example, Teleskiguy could create a channel talking about skiing at various famous or out-of-the way ski resorts, occasionally skiing himself. That might be interesting to people who ski or follow skiing.

At a certain point, YouTube will allow you to put adverts in your videos, which will pay you a pittance.

Have more than 4,000 valid public watch hours in the last 12 months.
Have more than 1,000 subscribers.
Have a linked AdSense account.

support.google.com

b) Starting a Patron account will allow viewers to “support your content” by giving you a one-time donation or monthly recurring donation. (The idea is not dissimilar from LGF, except you make those payments through another service such as PayPal.)

You could make a video of people you ask to hold your beer. You could have a whole channel of people holding your beer.

Additionally, content cannot violate YouTube’s “family-friendly” rules to be monetised (hence the Adpocalypse against atheist counter-apologists: YouTube views challenging religious ideas as anti-famlily-friendly, and will frequently take down videos).

I don’t entirely understand how mass mailing makes companies money, but it did or it wouldn’t have lasted so long.

Direct mailers would send millions of letters, packages, etc., knowing they’d get a response on the very low single digits. That very low single digit response was worth millions of dollars.

People on YouTube make money as “influencers” where companies pay a lot of money for these people to hawk their wares. It’s internet commercials using internet celebrities and are no different than when Jamie Lee Curtis was doing TV and radio ads for a now defunct cell phone company (I recall that well because the call “anytime, anywhere” was actually anytime it fucking worked, anywhere you might get a signal, and yes, I’m still bitter for buying into that. At least it was before long term contracts were being used.)

Also, look at what Stonekettle is doing. He’s built up a following and is selling cool shit now that literally sells out in minutes. He’s monitized the internet, but at least he’s doing his own thing, but rationally, if a company offered him hundreds of thousands of dollars to hawk their shit, would he’s turn that down? Perhaps depending on the company and his values, but most people wouldn’t.

Retweeting the false information about COVID-19 that President Trump said, word for word is bound to get the tweet deleted and account locked. The algorithms can’t tell the difference, it’s garbage info about an infectious disease and it needs to be removed from the public discourse.

With as many people as would be sharing it, even to criticize it, it would be very hard to get rid of it. This is one of the problems with deleting content. And how do you police two tweets that retweet the original, one with this:

“This tweet is going to kill children and adults.”

another with:

“This tweet is going to save children and adults.”

And imagine all variations of this.

So, Twitter knows that Trump’s statements are a public health threat. They’re just suspending accounts of the people quoting Trump’s insanities.

Instead of suspending Trump for TOS violations and being a public health menace by spewing dangerous lies and misinformation, Twitter blocks people identifying those lies and dangerous statements.

This is FUBAR. Trump is the danger. But Twitter wont suspend/ban because Trump generates eyeballs, which is revenue for Twitter. That’s all they care about.

Anyone else saying half the crap Trump does would have already been banned.

Macron is in Beirut promising assistance following the massive explosion wrecking so much of the port and downtown. France typically takes lead on issues there due to historical (read colonial) ties. Trump’s too busy spewing baseless conspiracy theories that make it more dangerous for everyone in the region.

The facts are bad enough.

Company ships 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate to Beirut. Company goes bankrupt. It gets stored and no one disposes of it safely. It just sits.

Longer it sits, more unstable it gets.

There’s rumor that workers were trying to secure the stash from looters, and a welding torch ignited it.

We’ll see what investigators can figure out, but we know that getting materials into the port are restricted since it was wrecked - a massive crater exists where the quay once stood. The explosion was so massive it threw a freighter on shore.

Immediate needs are health services, food, and housing. Rebuilding the port services would allow heavier gear to enter to aid rebuilding.

Ownership was questionable - as in who owned the cargo and was responsible for it. Lebanese authorities weren’t owners for it, so it’s not like they could dispose of it. Basically, it was a black hole, and this occurred because a foreign oligarch went bankrupt and refused to take responsibility for that cargo.

There are local failures- as in making sure that the load was safely stored. That’s what the investigations will look into.

Even so: leaving 2750 tons of a potentially explosive substance just stuck in a corner of a dockside warehouse for six years? MASKS All students are required to wear masks while participating in on campus instruction. In cases where a student does not possess a mask to wear, a mask will be provided. If a student consistently refuses to wear a mask, parental contact will be made with the goal of helping us to encourage the student to comply with the requirements in order to maintain mutual respect and a safe environment for others. Continual non-compliance may result in disciplinary consequences, including possible removal from the regular classroom environment.

It’s not an explicitly Christian magazine. It is a conservative and libertarian politics magazine.

The Western Journal (Wikipedia)

Interesting: the main thrust of AG James’ case against those NRA honchos (and I’m sure she has plenty of receipts) seems - at least as far as I’ve read - to be based mainly (solely?) on their skimming money from the organization to line their own pockets. Nothing (so far) about Russian money: just good old-fashioned graft/embezzlement.

Right wing pastors in the rural Northwest US are using the coronavirus to push their ideologies. Featuring notorious right wingers Doug Wilson (slavery is AOK!), Chuck Baldwin (let’s mix up church & state) and others.

The conclusion from Florida State University professor Michael McVicar is chilling:

“(The) coronavirus is a gold mine,” McVicar said. “This is morbid, but every death here, every nursing home with an outbreak, every local state and municipality that struggles to manage their ICU beds, every governor who looks lost — every single aspect of that looks like the opportunity for Christian men and women to reassert order.”

Every time there’s been some sort of disaster throughout history, churches move to evangelise and prey on fearful and scare people.

One could make the argument that the ongoing destabilization arising from the different waves of Yersenia pestis (it wasn’t just 1347-1350) helped to diminish the power of the church in Europe over time. More recently, I’m sure all of us remember there was a brief, very brief bump in church attendance in 2001 after 9/11, but then religious observance continued its currently inexorable decline here in the USA.

IOW, they can preach about disaster, but they aren’t doing a good job of mitigating it and people are going elsewhere.

As a kid I remember steelworkers going to the Union Hall every Wednesday and churches on Sunday. When the mills died the Union halls closed…so the Churches could run unchecked in their Republican brainwashing.

If SDNY found evidence of Russia->GOP funding could the prosecute? They are obvi focused on NY state laws the NRA has broken.

But Russia/GOP evidence uncovered in this investigation could legally be used in another from an entity with legal jurisdiction? By the FEC, which is notoriously under funded and under staffed?

There was evidence of this re: Butina. I think it got picked up in EDVA. They deported Butina. The evidence remains and could be used in cases depending on the circumstances. Ending the NRA wont require this foreign funding source to be highlighted, but it should be pointed out by Democrats once again during election cycle. GOP are more than happy to take NRA funds, even when knowing it was coming from foreign sources.

Buying my house, every three days, for two years.

Regarding money laundering of foreign donations (if that is true), those would likely go through NRA-ILA (the National Rifle Association’s political action committee).

I imagine since the NRA-ILA is tied up with both the NRA and the NRA Foundation, they will also discover if money passed through the two organisations to NRA-ILA (which would be a crime).

Lexington Concord Patriot Eagle Skimming, LLC

“…Previously unreported entities tied to the NRA include Wingate Church Insurance Services and Lexington Concord Holdings LLC. Both entities share the NRA’s address and are described as being in the “development phase,” according to its tax return. Delaware incorporation records and tax documents obtained by OpenSecrets show both entities are directed by J. Steven Hart, the NRA board’s former outside counsel who may be best known as the lobbyist whose wife rented EPA administrator Scott Pruitt a Capitol Hill condo for $50 per night. An NRA spokesperson confirmed that Hart “no longer represents the NRA.”

The NRA reported paying $88,410 to Lexington Concord Holdings LLC, which was incorporated in August 2018, over the course of that year.

The NRA’s tax returns list it as the direct controlling entity and 99 percent owner of WBB Investments LLC, a limited-liability company tied to facilitating a failed deal for the purchase of a 10,000-square-foot Texas mansion for LaPierre. The LLC was first identified by ProPublica as the recipient of a $70,000 payment flagged by NRA accountants in a “List of Top Concerns for the Audit Committee.”

According to internal documents leaked to the Wall Street Journal, LaPierre spent $274,695.03 on Zegna clothing from 2004 to 2017. He even ventured into the homebase of his enemies—Hollywood!—to buy his suits at the brand’s Beverly Hills location. On two particularly notable shopping sprees, he spent over $39,000. Well, as far as the average member of the NRA goes, I imagine that’s no different than the average member of any other large not-for-profit. If there is embezzlement and self-dealing going on, the average member might not be able to notice that.

I imagine the NRA’s financial statements are pretty complicated, as they are such a large organisation and most people don’t even bother with the financial statement of the local food bank.

They just look at the stated mission of the group, see the outward signs the group is doing what they think it should, and trust them to do the right thing with their money.

I’m sure states like Ohio were close enough to the margin that normal variance in the polls could cause them to move around. But that’s not where Trump needs to be to win. And the NBC map has Ohio as a tossup state.

the NRA is a New York registered charity (i never knew that - just assumed virginia)

she has them - just like trump’s ex-foundation

The declared reason it was started originally… is that in the Civil War, Union draftees and volunteers were mostly city people, who needed remedial firearms instruction. Confederates had spent their whole lives riding and shooting and tracking in the woods.

Here’s the excuse the NRA’s Wayne LaPierre used for covering up his luxury yacht trips in the Bahamas

When asked why he failed to disclose these trips as required by law, LaPierre initially claimed that he needed to keep them a secret for security purposes.

However, the AG’s office says that “LaPierre acknowledged that the NRA questionnaires only go to the NRA Secretary,” but also insisted he “was concerned about everybody on security, everything leaks.”

He further testified that he only considered the yacht a “safe place to do business” and not a “gift.”

I would still like to know what the false positive and false negative rate is on those tests. It’s good that they’re getting a second test.

I wonder, too. A local friend tested positive when he went to the hospital with a kidney stone. He was sweating with pain and slightly feverish, so they checked him. He worked in a local grocery store as a meat cutter, so you can imagine the havoc on that small store!

He never was sick, his wife who slept in the same bed tested negative, his mother whom he visited every day tested negative, his bandmates (who played an outdoor gig with him) all tested negative, but the lead singer had to quarantine from her job in a nursing home. None of us who have been around any of his contacts tested positive or got sick.

It raised all sorts of hullaballoo around here, but we finally decided that it must have been a false positive.

they have gotten more….something… these last few years ;-)

as to the various maps, including theirs, i think the main point is that when visiting these sites, you have to know what their method is so you can evaluate what you’re being told.

that’s why regularly checking more than one is always a good idea

same with news organizations
you have to know who you’re reading to understand any obvious, inherent, or hidden bias

Email from my Sen. Dick Durbin:

Fellow Illinoisan,

The right of every American to vote stands at the very core of our democracy. But for far too long, this most fundamental right has been under attack - especially when exercised by Black and Brown Americans.

In light of these attacks, and ongoing efforts to suppress the vote across the United States, I believe it’s time for us to explicitly enshrine the right to vote in our Constitution. That’s why this week, I introduced a joint resolution to enshrine an affirmative, individual right to vote in the U.S. Constitution.

Specifically, this amendment would:

* Provide an affirmative right to vote for every American citizen of legal voting age in any public election held in the jurisdiction in which they reside;
* Require that any efforts to limit the fundamental right to vote would be subject to the strictest level of review in the courts;
* Ensure that states could no longer rely on Section 2 of the Fourteenth Amendment to prevent Americans from voting due to a criminal conviction; and
* Provide that Congress has irrefutable authority to protect the right to vote through legislation.

Some may ask why we should pursue this amendment when there are clear - and perhaps easier - steps that Congress can take right now to protect voting rights under its existing constitutional authority. Let me give you an example.

The Senate could quickly take up and pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, which the House passed last year. But that would rely on a decision by Senator McConnell to actually let the Senate vote on a measure coming over from the House. There’s little hope that that’s going to happen.

Given the ongoing assault on voting rights in America, it is clear that additional tools are necessary to push back against widespread voter suppression.

Black lives matter. America matters. And our democracy matters. Once and for all, the right to vote should be clearly enshrined in our Constitution.

Sincerely,

U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL)

Meanwhile, the Trump grift continues apace.

Shortly after President Donald Trump said Wednesday he “probably” will give his acceptance speech for the Republican presidential nomination at the White House, prices for a room at the Trump International Hotel in D.C. increased by over 60 percent.

According to [Hotels(dot)com], one double occupancy room on the night of August 27, the date scheduled for the speech, start at $795 and range as high as $2,070.

In comparison, the hotel booking website shows lower prices for dates one week before and after August 27. According to [Hotels(dot)com] one room booked for two adults on August 20 or September 3 ranges in price from $495 to $1,770.

Nope. Back on July 2 his government was already clamouring for schools to reopen, including giving a plan for schools to follow to prevent illness from being brought in and what to do after it is.

https://coronavirus.ohio.gov/static/responsible/schools/K-12-Schools-Guidance.pdf (PDF, Government of Ohio Website)

The plan was to get schools reopened as quickly as possible back in the beginning of July.

GOP governors don’t do the right thing (unless it’s to help their benefactors).

Pence saying the quiet part out loud
Forget judging and justice
We put you on the court, you should vote the way we want

Vice President Mike Pence described Chief Justice John Roberts as a “disappointment” to conservative voters, explicitly seeking to cast the Supreme Court as a campaign issue ahead of the November election.

“Look, we have great respect for the institution of the Supreme Court of the United States,” Pence told the Christian Broadcasting Network’s David Brody on Wednesday. “But Chief Justice John Roberts has been a disappointment to conservatives — whether it be the Obamacare decision, or whether it be a spate of recent decisions all the way through Calvary Chapel

‘Extremely active’ hurricane season possible for Atlantic Basin (NOAA)

The 2020 Atlantic hurricane season has been off to a rapid pace with a record-setting nine named storms so far and has the potential to be one of the busiest on record. Historically, only two named storms form on average by early August, and the ninth named storm typically does not form until October 4. An average season produces 12 named storms, including six hurricanes of which three become major hurricanes (Category 3, 4, or 5).

“This is one of the most active seasonal forecasts that NOAA has produced in its 22-year history of hurricane outlooks. NOAA will continue to provide the best possible science and service to communities across the Nation for the remainder of hurricane season to ensure public readiness and safety,” said U.S. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross. “We encourage all Americans to do their part by getting prepared, remaining vigilant, and being ready to take action when necessary.”

The updated outlook calls for 19-25 named storms (winds of 39 mph or greater), of which 7-11 will become hurricanes (winds of 74 mph or greater), including 3-6 major hurricanes (winds of 111 mph or greater). This update covers the entire six-month hurricane season, which ends Nov. 30, and includes the nine named storms to date.

One of the rumors swirling around the lengthy storage of the ammonium nitrate at the Port of Beirut is that Hezbollah was the one who was holding it there. As always in a closed society, it is difficult to disentangle facts in self serving narrative.

Hezbollah Will Not Escape Blame for Beirut
bloomberg.com

“There are no prizes for guessing who in Lebanon might be interested in keeping such vast quantities of explosive material close at hand. The U.S. Treasury and Israel both believe Hezbollah controls many of Beirut’s port facilities.”

“Iran-backed Hezbollah, with its large and well-armed militia as well as its political hold on the prime minister, has nothing to fear from the state. But it will not escape public opprobrium: Most Lebanese will assume the ammonium nitrate belonged to the militia, for use in Syria and against Israel.”

Governor Ricketts won’t let local entities enforce mask orders though. Omaha is the largest city in the country with no mask mandate.

White House warns Omaha is among 9 cities nationally with concerning coronavirus numbers (Omaha World-Herald)

The White House Coronavirus Task Force sees troubling coronavirus numbers in 10 local areas across the country, including Omaha, even as its data shows improvement in Sunbelt states, according to a private call between task force leader Dr. Deborah Birx and state and local officials Wednesday.

“We are seeing encouraging signs across the South,” Birx said on a recording of the call obtained by the Center for Public Integrity. “We are concerned that both Baltimore and Atlanta remain at a very high level — (also) Kansas City, Portland, Omaha (and) of course what we talked about in the Central Valley (of California).”

Birx also said on the private call that California and Nebraska had recently joined the red zone — places with a high percentage of coronavirus cases or positive tests — and Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia had fallen out of it based on the percentage of positive tests in the last week. Experts have said test positivity rates can indicate whether an outbreak is under control.

The Supreme Court invented qualified immunity. Now, a judge’s blistering opinion shows why it must go. Ruth Marcus, WaPo

Numerous justices across the ideological spectrum — Anthony M. Kennedy, Antonin Scalia, Clarence Thomas, Sonia Sotomayor — have criticized the doctrine. But the court has appeared unwilling to do anything about it. As its term concluded, the court refused to hear any of the eight cases offering it the opportunity to reconsider the doctrine.

This cannot continue. As Reeves writes, “The status quo is extraordinary and unsustainable. Just as the Supreme Court swept away the mistaken doctrine of ‘separate but equal,’ so too should it eliminate the doctrine of qualified immunity.”

The judge couldn’t help Jamison. But maybe his message to his judicial bosses will help future Jamisons win the justice they deserve.

1 Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.

2 Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.

3 For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same:

4 For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.

Three days left in the state legislative session. All that time will be spent on the anti-abortion bill and the property tax relief (for the wealthy and corporations) bill, to eat up the time on the other bills. (Calculating my property tax relief if it came through, it looks like I would save about $3.)

The GOP changed the rules of the nominally non-partisan Unicameral to give themselves an advantage whilst claiming to stand up for certain principles in voting for bills the governor opposes.

They have pushed all the final readings of the remaining bills that the Lieutenant Governor wants to schedule to the last day of the session. They also removed the long-standing rule that the Unicameral can meet up to five days after the official closure if the governor vetoes a bill, to consider an override.

In effect, they’ve created a pocket veto for the governor where that never existed before.

There are two bills the governor has indicated he would veto if they get to his desk: The bill which would prohibit discrimination against African-Americans based on hairstyles, and a bill which would allow municipalities or counties to enter into land bank agreements.

I’m afraid to jinx it by saying anything, but looking at the John Hopkins University data it seems like the COVID case count in the US peaked on July 16 (which lines up with a lot of idiots getting it on the Fourth of July weekend) and has been slowly dropping since then. Daily deaths most recent peak was July 29 which seems to line up with the case date reasonably but it’s too early to tell on that.

Regardless, “a little bit better than fucking awful” is still horrible and we are still a dumpster fire shit show.

I’m not anticipating beaches or public pools being open in CA, NY, and perhaps even some of the FreeDUMB places on Labor Day Weekend.

There will be a relative peak I’m sure, but I don’t think we will see as much of a peak from Labor Day as people are expecting. I could be wrong.

As for schools. I expect the ones that were opened to be open for about … 3-4 weeks tops. Meaning the ones open now, probably wont be by Labor Day. The ones that open after Labor Day might not be at all.

Mail-in ballot applications in Virginia tap into worries about fraud with faulty instructions
washingtonpost.com

“The Washington-based Center for Voter Information, a nonprofit geared toward increasing voter participation among underrepresented groups, mailed 2.25 million applications for absentee ballots to voters across the state, with a quarter of them containing a return envelope addressed to the wrong election office, the group said Thursday.

The computer error — which mixed up similarly named localities such as Fairfax County and the city of Fairfax — prompted a flurry of phone calls and emails to local election offices from voters convinced that they were the targets of a mail-in ballot fraud scheme.”

“Also, the return address on the outside envelope appears to be the site of a United Parcel Service store in the city of Richmond.”

And that’s also a yup.

I know milestones are important. Prom. Graduation. Parties. Even raising a cow, horse or pig. But the problem with all this is that those could well be the last milestone some of these young people hit.

My kid was denied walking in the graduation ceremony with his class because he missed the math grade by one point. A standard they were doing away with that year. And no one got mad for him or got upset and raised hell with the school except for me. No one was fighting for his right to be with his class and have a graduation ceremony with his class. Instead, they made him go through summer school and he graduated with a class of kids from all the high schools in the county. I wasn’t happy, neither was he, but our milestones are different than most families are anyhow. I guess this is my long winded way of saying that kids will survive without these celebrations. Maybe I’m jaded and mean, but if your kid can’t handle not going to prom or having a big graduation celebration, then you have failed as a parent. Life is full of shit you can’t do or have to wait for. I know they’re kids, and I know I sound like I don’t care, but in the grand scheme of things, these milestones are not that important. Jannetty wrote in the now-deleted post that he was nearly molested by an older man who was selling him weed when he was 13 years old. “That was the very first time I made a man disappear,” he wrote. “They never found him…they shoulda looked in the Chattachoochie [sic].”

Who knows if it’s true, but it gives me a chance to post one of my favorite wrestling moments of all time:

I hated high school graduation because my asshole 8th grade algebra teacher alleged I cheated on my SATs and Achievement Tests.

I was required to retake them with my every answer being monitored by 2 observers and I scored higher. Actually scored 770 (out of 800) on the American History Achievement Test which named me a National Merit Scholar.

But that was NOT mentioned at my graduation thanks to Asshole Teacher.

I skipped my college graduation and had them send my BA and MA degrees in the mail.

re: #587 A hollow Gandalfian voice says, VOTE, you fools!

I couldn’t go to mine. I was homeless and couldn’t afford the cap and gown. I also had to work that day. So I went and picked up my diploma before the school shut down for the summer. I was bummed, but my life was too freaking busy, and not with fun stuff, that I didn’t have a lot of time to celebrate much. I worked really hard and got more credits than I needed, even if I wasn’t sporting high grades all the time. And I lived through it and did fine. Never been to a reunion either. Class of 1978. I have no clue where anyone I went to school with is now. Even my besties. My life went in a way different direction than theirs, that can happen when your family throws you away like trash, no matter what standards you rise to meet.

I would like to hope that people would be seeing how blessed they are to have food, a roof, TV/Internet, utilities, while having some safety and security. The ones that have it seem to be well populated by assholes. I still can’t get over people here being PROUD of going from GA to FL and back more than a few times since the pandemic hit. It seems like not a lot of people are really appreciative of much of anything. Trashing parks and lakes, yelling at people over simple mistakes or having to wait for anything at all, being mean as fuck and threatening or even actually hurting people over masks and simple steps to keep the community well. At what point do people begin checking their shit and back the fuck up?

re: #594 🌹UOJB!

Went to high school graduation, which was bittersweet - I enjoyed high school but was ready to move on. Skipped undergrad because I just had no desire to do it and didn’t really make many connections in undergrad. Did law school because I told my mom I would if I went to grad school (smaller school so it wasn’t too bad, we were supposed to have Rehnquist as our commencement speaker, but that’s when his health was failing).

I’ve honestly not really enjoyed any graduation I’d been to. But I get it for those who want the pomp and circumstance and the acknowledgement of their achievements. I don’t begrudge anyone being upset they missed out on that, it’s not their fault that the orange idiot fucked this pig.

When I worked in tech support a couple of years ago, I realized that by and large most people don’t know how to use an address bar in a browser anymore because they just Google everything.

A customer once even told me I was “incompetent and outdated” because I insisted we couldn’t use Google for what he was trying to do (login to his router).

What can you say? Everyone thinks they’re an expert on the Internet.

A willingness to admit what you don’t know can make all the difference.
