re: #215 LeftyRambles2413 (HappyWarrior)

I could never vote Libertarian but Johnson has actual credibility that Trump will never have.

I’ve voted Libertarian a few times. Partly because I’m in California and I know that my vote isn’t going to make much/any difference (the joys of the electoral college). Partly because I have, more often than not, been disappointed by the nominees the major parties have offered. 2016 I went into the booth not knowing what I was going to do on the presidential line - I knew I wouldn’t be voting for Trump, and always had major reservations about Clinton. In the end, I ended up voting for her, but I did think about voting for Johnson, and I did think about leaving the line blank.

One more thing to pound them over the head with in the general election. Legalization is fairly popular at this point - by like a 2:1 margin. If Republicans in the Senate won’t even act on something that popular, it’s a pretty useful tool to go after every Republican up in the Senate this year.

Newsom and Garcetti still have eviction moratoriums in place here but they are being ignored.

The unlawful detainer moratoriums only apply if the tenant can show they’re unable to pay rent due to loss of income due to the pandemic. If tenants are still working and still able to pay and just decided “fuck it, I’m not paying this month” they can still be evicted. Same goes if they break the lease in some other way (like doing illegal shit or causing massive damage to the property).

It’s insane thinking. So Congress has to pass a law that permits enforcement of subpoeanas, which could then be veto’ed by the entity to which a huge number of subpoeanas will be directed? It is a total destruction of separation of powers. I’m not sure it survives even this iteration of SCOTUS.

So, reading through this decision, a few thoughts:

1. the majority opinion is essentially daring the House to use its inherent contempt powers
2. the majority opinion is super narrowly tailored and might be “technically” right, but the practical effect is going to be much less than ideal (the Sargent at arms arresting people for ignoring Congressional subpoenas is probably not an outcome anyone really wants)
3. Congress has, apparently, been really fucking terrible at drafting laws related to its own power and the next Congress needs to get its shit together and fix a lot of this
4. this is going to get another en banc review and I suspect the full panel is going to tell this panel to stop being so obtuse

It’s always tricky. Hopefully Biden, having spent decades in Congress would be more inclined to support such legislation. Otherwise, you’re going to need veto-proof majorities to get it passed (which, in theory, shouldn’t be hard to do). There’s the other unfortunate issue in that Congress has spent at least a century deferring its power to the executive branch, while the courts are loathe to get involved in a lot of these cases.

On a side note related to that, the Senate passed a bill banning US Federal Government employees from using TikTok on government devices.

And even if it weren’t illegal, and even if he had TikTok on a personal phone, should a serving officer really be using an application that could let the Chinese government know where he is at all times? Some US military deployment locations in really strange places were discovered because they had devices hooked up to the internet that were broadcasting their location publicly (Strava, IIRC).

Twenty-year-old students getting covid at universities, isolated from the most vulnerable, is not a crisis.

How exactly are these 20-year olds isolated from the most vulnerable? What about those on the custodial staff or on-campus food services who have to work or lose their jobs and not qualify for unemployment? My guess would be that some of them are from vulnerable populations or perhaps live with someone vulnerable.

What is the point of doing this when the GOP Senate will just ignore it?

because several hundred thousand potentially persuadable libertarians who are one-issue voters will see the Democrats voting to nationally legalize, and a REpublican senate that won’t touch this, and they may be the difference in a swing state.

Not that I have nice things to say about actual “rural” people either.

Things seem nicer because everyone in the small community is willing to hide one another’s terrible acts, and the casualties are incentivized to leave or simply slotted into one of many convenient outcast positions.

Cities are full of people who left their small rural town because it made them feel safer.

Also…anybody telling you to get into small scale farming is either a fool or setting you up to be financially fucked. Economy of scale is destroying small farms through bankruptcy or turning them into subcontractors that eventually collapse under the low pay and the terrible health-affecting conditions of factory farm conditions.

People don’t say this because they interact with the actual country, but because they rely on the volkisch fantasy of yeoman farmers as good, wholesome people as a thought-ending cliche. It’s virtue signalling.

Because it seems like the courts have defanged the House in much the same way that state gov’ts defanged Governor’s offices soon as Dems were in charge, and get away with it because they have all the actual power able to be leveraged to do so and Dems can’t do shit about it because ‘hey, turns out you don’t actually have that power and we’ll destroy you completely if you try’?

Mulligan and other sources told ABC News that the new head of the office is 36-year-old Kellen Dwyer, a cyber-crimes prosecutor who joined the federal government six years ago and made international headlines in November 2018 when he accidentally revealed that federal charges had been secretly filed against WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

Mulligan said that given Dwyer’s limited time and experience handling national security matters, he is “a very odd” choice to replace Wiegmann, whom she described as “exceptional” at managing government bureaucracy and resolving “highly contentious matters across the government.”

The timing of the personnel change - coming just two months before the U.S. presidential election, and in the midst of a battle against domestic terrorism and foreign interference in the election - has worried current and former members of the national security community.

Well, in a rare moment of Stopped Clock Syndrome, the not-so-good senator is actually correct. It is a tragically sad state of affairs when the President of the United States is such a gianormous twatwaffle that a sitting Governor has to ask him to stay out of his state to avoid further inflaming political and racial tensions.

When you realize that there’s already some infiltration of Law Enforcement across the country by members of these right-wing extremists groups, and that both are in communication with Trump’s WH, it’s not just an odd thing to say. He’s lining it all up.

re: #95 Dr Lizardo

Maybe Trump’s dementia has caused him to forget he’s POTUS?

Before Biden’s speech today, I was watching the CNN anchor question a white suburban woman (Mary Andersen?) who voted for Trump in 2016 and the interview reminded me of yesterday’s exchange about Ian Millhiser’s joke on the undecided voter. It wasn’t quite as bad but close to it.

She said that she thought Biden was a good man but not as sharp as he used to be — when the anchor pushed back that allegations of dementia were thrown at both candidates, Ms Andersen(?) said that she had been watching Trump for years and thought there was no decline in his intellect during the period.

She actually made 2 valid points (1) while the stock market is soaring, small businesses were hurting and many were going out of business and (2) Trump should not go to Kenosha, because it would not be helpful. Unfortunately, she thought a great man like Ben Carson should travel there instead to address the issues. And she really believed that the problem with Trump was that he was micromanaging the situation and that instead he should have his staff handle the details. These people are so deluded that no information can penetrate their brains.

215
Barefoot Grin  Aug 31, 2020 • 3:27:56pm

I bet that Biden beats Trump by far more than HRC’s 3 million in the popular vote, but because of the stupid EC, Trump can still eek past.

re: #90 Dr Lizardo

I confess, it’s been awhile since I’ve had a complete physical. But you know, I really don’t anticipate having to undergo a procedure that would require, let’s say, general anesthesia.

Well, propofol isn’t general anaesthesia, but it is deep sedation. I’ve had it several times for colonoscopy and endoscopy. That stuff will throw you for a loop. The first time I had an endoscopy, I woke up to hear the doctor saying blah blah blah CANCER blah blah before falling unconscious again. Turns out he was looking for Barrett’s esophagus, a precursor to cancer. He didn’t find any. Which I found out from the report my dad handed to me. What I learned from that experience was that propofol will overcome any inclination to grab a doctor’s arm and yell CANCER!?!!!

It doesn’t actually take long to be put under for a scope. The prep takes far longer.

re: #216 mmmirele

My most recent procedures were done using Versed and Fentanyl when I had my colonoscopy and cataract replacements. What pissed me off is that the opthomoligist used a nurse anestesist (who worked at the only anesthesia practice in my area, and not in network) whereas my (and my mothers) gastroenterologist does it himself.

At least with propofol its just one drug, which I had with a prior colonoscopy and shoulder separation reduction.

The first time I had an endoscopy they used Demerit and Valium - of all the non-general
sedation liked that one the best.

2016 I went into the booth not knowing what I was going to do on the presidential line - I knew I wouldn’t be voting for Trump, and always had major reservations about Clinton. In the end, I ended up voting for her, but I did think about voting for Johnson, and I did think about leaving the line blank.

So, you’re an idiot who made the right choice by accident. Cool.

Could. Could let the Chinese government know where he is at all times.

Do you seriously think Trump’s war on TikTok is really about national security?

There’s an interesting difference between perception of the Police (civilian, mostly patrol urban areas) and the Gendarmerie (military, mostly patrol rural areas) in France.

Contrary to what one might think the Police are often seen as an occupying force, out of control and unprofessional where the Gendarmarie are more highly respected.

Odd.

(There are counter examples — see the case of Adama Traoré — but that is the general feeling).

(And of course many people in the rest of the military still detest the Gendarmarie for obvious reasons).
