Bringing this over:

From downstairs:
re: #312 Patricia Kayden

Biden isn’t President. He has condemned the violence. Trump is president and has refused to condemn rightwing violence. These are his riots.

The press won’t care. They have an incentive to ignore history, to promote “the view from nowhere”. If you’re a nihilistic news director and propagandist, you’ll say that “Biden should have managed the riots better!” They outright say it. They don’t notice reality outside their own office—they make their own reality, like a past president.

Trump is deliberately going to Kenosha and Portland to incite more violence. He wants a race war with lots of blood on the streets.

I really fear this next week because people are going to be going for their guns and the Republicans are going to get shocked to find out that Democrats have a lot of guns…

I think it was 3 or 4 months ago when I could no longer access twitter embeds easily in Safari. I would click on things lizards would post, but it took forever for them to load. I’m guessing the part I’ve italicized is referring to the Master Password for Firefox’s passwords storage/management feature, which remains unavailable/inaccessible without that Master Password (Primary Password, in newspeak). If you don’t mind losing whatever other info is stored there, there is a way to “nuke it” and start over. See here:
Reset your Primary Password if you’ve forgotten it
This basically discards ALL the info protected by that old “master password” (Primary Password), but lets you start over, including the option of choosing a new one.

Another workaround may be to install a recent version of Firefox as a PortableApp, which would work quite independently of your current Firefox, but you’d have all the usual setup/configuration to go thru with the portable version.

The fact that over 40% of the voting public overlooks Trump’s responsibility for 180,000+ American deaths is especially troubling. At least part of that attitude by the public is due to the media’s failure to pin these deaths on his negligence and lack of interest; and that is the fault of the MSM as much as Faux news.

Al Qaren and Covidiots are taking that article to mean that the other factors killed the people and not COVID so actual COVID deaths are around 10000, and they are fucking howling to the moon about it right now. (As if all of a sudden 170 thousand extra people just happened to drop dead of obesity, high blood pressure, asthma, etc. and the COVID thing was just a coincidence.)

I’ve seen that article posted by idiots, RWNJs, Karens, Russian Bots, etc. *literally* thousands of times in the past two days with almost a verbatim cut-and-paste blurb with it.

Not once have I seen anyone in the media point out this is basically a botnet of weaponized disinformation.

They’re not interested in thinking. They are interested in grasping any method of bending facts and statistics to deny that COVID is really messing with the country and that the GOP and Trump are very very responsible for this mess. (And that thinking would also imply that the GOP does not have their interests in mind and therefore the GOP should not be voted for as well. But that also leads to Biden and Communism!)

It looks like 1.5 to 2 percent is the number that keeps coming up when they do tests of asymptomatics. Would expect it to vary pretty widely by geography, travel modes, etc. The disgrace is that we are 7 months into this and don’t have any numbers we can trust. If we had started in April with planning a return to school with expanded facilities, reduced class size, additional teaching/cleaning staff, then it might have been possible, but that would have cost money and, with the whole point being to save the economy at all costs, we all know what a burden things like public health, safety and education are on the bottom line…

That plus this from electoral-vote.com re the third party vote

… most of the “I’m not voting for the lesser of two evils” voters, who voted for Jill Stein or Gary Johnson to send Clinton a message, have decided they would prefer the lesser of two evils to the greater of two evils. They are going for Biden this time. They have apparently learned their lesson the hard way. ..

Another way of looking at these data is that Trump hasn’t lost any voters… . The flip side of this is that he hasn’t gained any voters, either. He has the same base as last time but Biden has all the Clinton voters and also the third-party voters. Clinton’s margin in the popular vote was 2.1%. If we add in the 6% third-party vote, Biden gets to 8%, which is pretty much what the national polls are showing now

It’s worse than that… If you look at the actual CDC data, by far the largest comorbidities were pneumonia, respiratory failure, etc. Things clearly related to a covid19 infection. Just because additional things were listed on the death certificate doesn’t mean that covid19 wasn’t the primary cause.

Trump is helpless against another white man of similar physical stature.

There is no automatic “other” for simpleton Trump followers to hate. There is no obvious physical intimidation to display to Trump’s cretin mob that he is the “alpha male” like what he did in his vulgar display against Hillary Clinton. All Biden has to do is ramp up the physical pressure against a con man who is totally reliant on mind-numbing bloviating and chest thumping.

It’s a shame that it has to come to this, but here we are in America in 2020. It will take a white male to beat Trump …or a non-running B. Obama. If Obama were running I predict a 20 point blowout with minority voters turning out in droves. With Biden, it will likely be 5-8% victory.

Assuming that the poll was scientific, I think Democrats do the country a disservice by not joining the military or the police in larger numbers.

Why do you say that. If you saw a poll that at disproportionate number of baristas were going to vote Democratic would you blame Republican voters for not taking those jobs?

Are you implying that Republican members of the armed forces are potentially disloyal?

(I assume that police, in general, but especially in the US are RWA thugs. It doesn’t matter who joins the police — they will always be the wrong people — what matters is who, and how firmly, controls the police).

(True story: My uncle, who was admittedly wet, joined the police because he wanted to serve the community, but never got beyond being a cadet because he said he didn’t like arresting people. Then he went to work as an orderly in an insane asylum, met his future wife and they lived happily ever after).

Baristas aren’t jobs that have an impact on how the country is run.

Let me start with the disclamer “Not all Democrats” because a number of us here served in the military, including me.

Democrats right now tend to have an aversion to serving in the military and the police, because of the nature of the two. But the only good way to influence what happens in them is to serve and move up the ranks into leadership positions. Otherwise you end up with the police forces we have now.

Although the police and the military are institutions within a democratic society, they are much more authoritarian in structure and are governed from the top down. Which should mean that responsibility for actions, policies and decisions should also flow to the top.

Which in a practical sense means that they have a lot of incentive to cover things up and bury problems to avoid making those upper decision-making echelons look bad.

What is a military family, though, but parents who encourge their kids to join, or don’t see joining as an issue? That’s not really much different than any group deciding that being part of something is good or bad to be in the group.

To put it more bluntly, I think the Democratic party and progressives should do more to encourage people to join the military or the police. They are both necessary to a functioning society, and they both need to have competent peole in them.

Yes — but that is absolutely appalling. It was one thing to support Trump in 2016, when courtesy of the MSM failures, most Americans were unaware of Trump’s true nature. I think it’s more or less people whose family members have served extensive time in the military. My cousin’s son who just joined could be said to be from a military family given his dad, uncles on both sides, & grandfathers were in. Others like another cousin’s son don’t have that pedigree. I agree fully btw. I’ve never liked the attachment of military service being exclusive against the values of liberalism. I’m in fact quite proud of my aforementioned cousins and my other family members who have served.

One of my neighbors who has chickens decided to move his coop to a different spot in his yard last week. He works in landscaping and brought in a bobcat (very small front loader) from work. He used the shovel to pick up the coop. It immediately fell off with a loud crash. [Coop de Grace?] While I though it was destroyed, apparently he was able to move it, set it back up and put the chickens back in it. [It was flocked up again]

He also tore up part of his lawn with the bobcat tracks. I guess that he had a good time. I certainly was entertained. While politely trying to pretend that I saw nothing… Nothing!

His dad and brothers served in WW2. My Brother-in-law is the only one who has served more than one time, though I’m pretty sure his and my sister’s son will reenlist..

I’d say you’re a military family.

the answer is absolutely not and we all know it.
so do they as they make this ridiculous argument

Yes — but that is absolutely appalling. It was one thing to support Trump in 2016, when courtesy of the MSM failures, most Americans were unaware of Trump’s true nature. But now, with 180,000+ dead, the fact that almost all his supporters are sticking with him is a terrible commentary on our nation.

On the other hand, it is “comforting” in the sense that, if trumpenGOPers proudly flaunt their support (as opposed to hiding it out of shame), we aren’t looking at some sort of reverse-Bradley effect in the polls - the support they’re capturing is what actually exists.

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan’s administration on Saturday fired an employee for “divisive images and statements” made on social media, including posts that sympathized with the teenager charged with shooting demonstrators in Wisconsin.

Arthur “Mac” Love IV had been deputy director of the Governor’s Office of Community Initiatives, which oversees the state’s ethnic and cultural commissions, community service programs and religious outreach. He’s been with the office since 2015, according to his online resume.

Love did not respond to requests for comment sent via Facebook on Saturday.

Love has posted memes showing support for Kyle Rittenhouse, a 17-year-old from Illinois who is charged with fatally shooting Anthony M. Huber and Joseph Rosenbaum during demonstrations in Kenosha. People had gathered in Kenosha to protest the police shooting of Jacob Blake.

The quiet Trump supporter thing is funny because they’re also claiming that Trump has the enthusiasm gap. Biden’s got an actual silent majority. My Dad was talking about giving Joe a 100 bucks and called Trump a fascist. You won’t see Biden merc on his vehicle and his demographic is one of Trump’s strongest.

Trump is highly unlikely to receive a majority or even a plurality of the popular vote, his chances of re-election rest entirely on gaming the system to his advantage, and I expect he is going to pull some serious shock-and-awe moves out of his voluminous sleeves.

I expect he will seek to use the powers of the Executive to pull of something so outrageous and unprecedented that we simply do not know how to react until it is too late and the damage is done. A lot of it will be timing, as long as it gets him back into office, he will not have to face any serious consequences from it unless the GOP totally loses the Senate.

Although I am but 44, my dad served in the Navy in the Pacific Theater during WW2 (fudged his age a bit to get in). Two half brothers served in Vietnam. A brother in law was also in Vietnam. I wouldn’t consider mine to be a “military family”.

Trump’s popularity slips in latest Military Times poll — and more troops say they’ll vote for Biden

In the latest results — based on 1,018 active-duty troops surveyed in late July and early August — nearly half of respondents (49.9 percent) had an unfavorable view of the president, compared to about 38 percent who had a favorable view. Questions in the poll had a margin of error of up to 2 percent.

Among all survey participants, 42 percent said they “strongly” disapprove of Trump’s time in office.

re: #177 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

Rittenhouse’s attorney has argued that his client acted in self-defense. Some of Love’s posts amplify that argument.
[Most read] Final Ravens 53-man roster projection: 2019 draft pick gets cut, undrafted rookie streak continues »
In one post, Love reposted pictures that appear to show Rittenhouse cleaning graffiti. The original poster wrote: “I’m grateful that conservatives are rallying behind this kid. He genuinely seems like a good person.” It goes on to denigrate the two men Rittenhouse is charged with killing.

Another meme shows a photo of people marching with the words, “Defund the police! We can police our own communities.” The next photo shows Rittenhouse carrying his gun with the words “policed his community.” A third photo shows a distressed person yelling.

Earlier this week, Love reposted a meme that mocks “liberals” for calling Rittenhouse a white supremacist.

Steve McAdams, executive director of the Governor’s Office on Community Initiatives, said in a statement Saturday afternoon: “These divisive images and statements are inconsistent with the mission and core values of the Office of Community Initiatives. Earlier today, I relieved this employee of his duties. Kevin Craft, administrative director of the Governor’s Commission on African Affairs, will assume these duties effective immediately.”
Shareese Churchill, a spokeswoman for the governor, said Saturday: “These posts are obviously totally inappropriate. We fully support the immediate actions taken by Director McAdams to address this matter.”

Love’s salary last year was $77,000, according to a state employee salary database obtained by The Baltimore Sun.
Love also posted several memes in a Facebook group called Inside Maryland Politics, where a thread on the Kenosha shootings drew dozens of comments.

One meme calls one of the Kenosha shooting victims a “deceased terrorist.”
“His pronouns are was/were,” it reads.

On Saturday morning, as Love’s posts circulated on social media, he posted a series of pictures of vandalized buildings in Raleigh, North Carolina, after protests there.

“More peaceful protesting from the liberal-left in America,” he wrote. “Wake Up.”

He continued: “people on the left try to get you fired from your job for speaking truth. it’s better to be fired for being honest than the LIE.”

The posts drew attention from state lawmakers, who began calling Hogan to dismiss Love.
Del. Eric Luedtke, a Montgomery County Democrat who is the House of Delegates majority leader, posted a screenshot of Love sharing a picture of a police officer smiling and flashing two thumbs up, with the caption: “Dont Be A Thug If You Cant Take A Slug!”

Luedtke wrote on Twitter: “This is one of the FB posts by Governor Hogan’s Deputy Director of Community Initiatives. Who oversees — I’m not kidding — the Commission on African American History and Culture. Fire him, @GovLarryHogan, and issue the Exec Order on use of force you should’ve issued months ago.”
Del. Jheanelle Wilkins, another Montgomery County Democrat, wrote on Twitter that Hogan should “immediately terminate this employee.”

“This guy’s office oversees the Commission on African-American History and Culture. It goes without saying he is not fit to be a public servant in any capacity,” Del. Vaughn Stewart, another Montgomery Democrat, wrote on Twitter.

12% is probably about right for those in the military that would say “I can’t stand Trump, but I can’t bring myself to vote for a Democrat.”

That 34% going third party in 2016 is really interesting. I suspect most of that went to Johnson as the Libertarian nominee, maybe a few to McMullin as well. Makes me wonder what 2016 would have looked like if the Libertarians hadn’t run, arguably, the most credible nominee they ever have.
