The Post Office just delivered a package to my house. My wife said it was my “half-birthday” present, since she did not get me a present on my birthday. (I don’t really do birthday celebrations.)
The package was from Sweden; it is a Swedish straight razor, along with a badger-bristle shaving brush, Swedish shaving soap, lavender after shave lotion, and a silver stand to hold the brush and razor, along with a leather and linen strop.

Again, if the election had been closer and had come down to one or perhaps two decisive states, Trump’s strategy would’ve stood a fair chance of succeeding.

Yeah, I was about to say that there’s three key qualities that Trump and Sanders share that make the comparisons so true:
1. Massive egos that make it impossible for them to admit fault, but instead constantly work to pin blame on others “lesser” than themselves.
2. Incompetence that constantly thwarts their plans due to starting with what they want to happen and then failing to do the basic work to get there.
3. Tendency to surround themselves with sycophants who tell them what they want to hear rather than what they need to hear, which plays to those massive egos but also leads to their plans failing due to poor leadership.

Another example of why wingnuts should have been specific when they declared they wanted a “successful businessman” in the WH. Theoretically, yes. But it’s just as (if not more) likely that the USSC bench declines to hear the case and just lets the dismissal stand.

re: #164 Yeah Sure WhatEVs
But CAN they go to the SCOTUS?
They’ve got to assert a federal cause of action, since the state supreme court (highest state court in a given state, unless it’s NY, where the top court is the Court of Appeals) is the final arbiter. Given their incompetence, not sure they’d be able to manage that.
The Trump team has a problem putting together everything you need to competently put together a case before a judge, from the briefs to the evidence and witnesses. They’ve got nothing, and their pressers are a show/con where they talk up that they have all this evidence, but the cases themselves have no evidence, witnesses, or even causes of action that reflect what was stated at the pressers. It’s as though they have a completely different set of priorities for the pressers than the court cases.
And those court cases are frivolous at that - and the judges should start imposing sanctions and costs for good measure.

They’re trying these “cases” in the court of public opinion because there (unlike a real courtroom) they’re not in danger of being charged with perjury every time they yank “evidence” out of their asses or swear that there’s “fraud” that can be proven.

pretty much the textbook definition when a judge invokes ‘Frankenstein’s Monster”
This is one of those times where you learn who actually read Bush v. Gore and who just skimmed the Cliff Notes. The USSC only weighed in there because the Bush campaign was able to argue convincingly that any recount where there were differing rules in different counties would violate the Bush campaign’s rights under the Equal Protection Clause. And that a general recount under uniform rules ran the risk of putting FL in violation of the Dec 8th deadline to approve a slate of electors in time for the EC vote.
In this election, neither scenario is currently in play, and (if you want to strain the analogy) the Trump campaign is actually in danger of ending up as the “Gore” in BvG.

Time to break one more norm. Harris will be the President of the Senate
There is nothing that says anything about a “majority leader” and nothing that gives the Majority Leader any power whatsoever. It has only been customary for the VP to delegate that to voting Senators. But in an era where McConnell has broken so many norms, it is time we break one more norm and return to what the Constitution says. On January 20, Harris should take her rightful place as President of the Senate and discharge those duties such as assigning committees and scheduling votes. I don’t know why this hasn’t come up before. It is right there in the Constitution.
i wonder how real it is

True: Trump here is in the “Gore” side of Bush v Gore, but in this case is deliberately trying to slow the counts down so they would miss the certification deadline (which won’t happen). But the equal protection argument in Bush v Gore was a completely politically motivated miscarriage of justice, and they knew it by writing that it should never be used as precedent. It was the Florida SC’s call on what to do, not the SCOTUS.

I’m not sure how “real” it is but I would be all in on VP Harris using her power as President of the Senate if Mitch tries any stunts.
Right now the best case scenario for the Dems is if they can take both GA Senate seats.
Personally I doubt that will happen, but it is possible.
Worst case is that Mitch ends up with a 52-48 majority, basically the same it has been. If this is the case come January, you can bet Mitch will block any major Biden objective, any senior judge appointments, etc.
re: #193 dangerman
I looked up the part in the constitution. It says that the two houses shall choose their leaders. Another section also says that the VP has not votes unless the Senate is woefully divided. I’m afraid that idea would be a little too far.

I looked up the part in the constitution. It says that the two houses shall choose their leaders. Another section also says that the VP has not votes unless the Senate is woefully divided. I’m afraid that idea would be a little too far.
there are two links in the dkos article
i read them both and the comments
it’s about who gets ‘recognized’ first in daily business
i have three takeaways
- it seems constitutionally to be pretty clearly defined what the vp’s role is and this sits squarely within
- as compared that to what we’ve come to accept which is nothing more than agreed ‘custom’ that only goes back to 1937 and is not documented in the senate rules (ie the ‘majority leader’ runs things)
- it would take a lot of guts to try it

Time to break one more norm. Harris will be the President of the Senatei wonder how real it is
Not very. IIRC, the VP’s Constitutional position of being the “presiding officer” of the Senate ex officio doesn’t really carry any real power with it: authority over committee assignments, etc. is pretty much delegated to the Senate itself, as a body: which (like the House on the other side) sets its own rules. And those rules, as they now stand, give the partisan caucuses most/all of the “organizational” power.
Where VP Harris MIGHT have some leverage, is as a potential tie-breaker…
Fun Fact: Joe Biden is the only VPOTUS to serve eight full years in that office and never had to cast a tie-breaking vote….
Breaking: state canvassing board to vote to certify Biden as the winner of Michigan’s 16 Electoral votes by a 3-1 margin.

Still, it’s a path upon which to tread lightly.
The very fact that the Dems are not going to be the majority in Senate has to give us pause.
If Harris is going to break an 80 year old precedent, what will happen when the next Republican VP sits in that chair.
We have to remember that half the country is fine with Trumpian politics and Trumpian dystopia.
We can’t expect the Dems to win in 2024.
We can’t even expect the Dems to hold the House in 2022. Remember, the Dems lost House seats this time, a complete disappointment.
So yes, Harris needs to tread carefully with flexing the her muscle as President of the Senate.

At least 45 people have been killed during Uganda protests
At least 45 people were killed in protests that rocked Kampala and other parts of Uganda last week, a police spokesperson said Monday.
The protests were sparked by the arrest of popular music star turned presidential candidate Bobi Wine for contravening Covid-19 regulations at a campaign rally last Wednesday. As the news of Wine’s arrest broke, protesters took to the streets of Kampala, clashing with police and military who responded with tear gas.
While authorities have said the restrictions are necessary to curb the spread of Covid-19, opposition members and their supporters say that they are an excuse to curb campaigning before the upcoming January election.
Witnesses told CNN that police, military and plainclothes gunmen fired high caliber rifles in dense urban areas to quell the protests. Their accounts are backed up by multiple videos shared on social media during the chaos.

Trump’s not “sulking,” he’s waging war on democracy
Don’t normalize this, by Eric Boehlert
Trump’s election sabotage campaign is running out of time, but the damage he’s inflicting will have long lasting consequences. Covering this unprecedented attack on American election integrity, the press is still not being honest about Trump’s ruinous final chapter.
The Daily Beast last week reported on Trump’s “quixotic and potentially destructive effort” to steal a victory. “Quixotic” and “possibly destructive”? He’s the first president in 240 years who has not accepted the election results, after losing by six million votes. Worse, he’s been on a three-month crusade to denigrate free and fair elections in America, and he’s making it impossible for there to be a smooth transition of power.
This is so far beyond “quixotic.” Of course it’s destructive to our democracy — does anyone think the Republican Party will soon return to the days of rationally accepting ballot results? The GOP has blown a permanent hole in our election process.
A hallmark failure of the press for four years has been that it refuses to use the proper language to describe the truly lawless nature of Trump and today’s GOP.
re: #142 Targetpractice
Yeah, I was about to say that there’s three key qualities that Trump and Sanders share that make the comparisons so true:
1. Massive egos that make it impossible for them to admit fault, but instead constantly work to pin blame on others “lesser” than themselves.
2. Incompetence that constantly thwarts their plans due to starting with what they want to happen and then failing to do the basic work to get there.
3. Tendency to surround themselves with sycophants who tell them what they want to hear rather than what they need to hear, which plays to those massive egos but also leads to their plans failing due to poor leadership.
I’m sorry but those are Barnum statements and I value general critical thinking too much not to point this out. You could seemingly-accurately apply them to anyone with power because they’re the things that everyone with power commonly does wrong. In fact, they’re so applicable to the people seen as the centrist alternative to Sanders that this merits…
They all suck. They all suck because power has the same effect on individuals regardless of their stated ideology, and they also all suck because our system is fundamentally broken so that rich people that want to be landed gentry get more say than the rest so basically nobody’s agenda ever gets through and what does get through is deliberately tainted on the product line (stares in latest price increase to insurance), and they also all suck because our media system is fundamentally unserious and pegged for entertainment value that it has now infected our entire political discourse in manner similar to a cordyceps fungus.
I don’t understand why I’m supposed to be mad at Bernie Sanders for wrongly imagining that the white working class boosted Trump because they’re alienated, but not mad at the centrist confidence that middles-class conservatives weren’t going to vote Trump because he was slightly nastier than an average Republicans, thus alienating them.
I can befrustrated by leftist overly-grand rhetoric, but I’m just as pissed that the alternative is apparently hypervigilant gauging of what will play well with conservatives when it’s abundantly clear that they always operate in bad faith. I’m tired of being told that “realism” is letting the Munchausen-by-proxy parent poison their child once a day.
And while I find leftists grifters and sycophants gross…they’re less dangerous than the “both sides” and “centrist” grifters and sycophants who have continuously normalized worse and worse shit for decades directly creating the current administration and the current media sphere in which reporting is simply letting people lie for the sake of “balance.”
I detest cults of personality, so I find Bernie Mania to be silly and fetishitic, and in an age of instant commentary and inherent internet hyperbole, it is very easy for such things to form…but much of what I find objectionable about Bernie Mania applies to every other person who’s been abstracted into a brand that collects and regurgitates sentiment like a honeydew ant colony. Which is currently fucking everybody because internet discussion is a Skinnerian/Kahnemanian hellscape that we probably need to start think of as a systemic problem. How many rounds of magical thinking and myth-making have we done about people who were going to End Trump? Or inflated minor acts of pique into victory? It’s all the same inflorescence feeding off the same medium.
But I also detest the equal and opposite desire to locate singular scapegoats for large systemic failures…which where most of this Bernie stuff ends up going. No, the one independent senator and his interent stans isn’t causing the Democratic Party all it’s problems any more than Donald Trump spontaneously generated a buzzing cloud of fascists inside the Republican Party via a post-fast-food dump. The attempt to lay these problems at the feet of singular actors and lament how we could still have normality without them is bullshit.
And, yeah, I am really really strident about this because…this is how normalization actually functions. Things were already generally bad, but it’s easier to find some symbolic thing that is The Source, the Thing That Makes The Bad, and focus on it, purge it, then declare against facts that now normalcy will resume. There is no normalcy, there has never been any normalcy. All the horrible shit happening now is a direct consequence of the horrible shit happening in the past that was mostly burden-shifted onto people who didn’t have a platform. It’s not karma, it’s not fate, it’s the serial killer getting lazy and targeting his next door neighbor. I don’t accept the basic premise that the people living with the serial killer and making excuses for his periodic cat mutilations and blood-and-cum-stained overalls actually get to dictate terms to me about how to process all the murders.

Attorney General Barr Will Go Out With a Whimper, Not a Bang
That Durham investigation into the Trump-Russia probe could just fade away
by Nancy LeTourneau, Washington Monthly
So, as the Trump presidency comes to an end, let’s review what we know about its relationship with Moscow.
•The Mueller team found that the Trump campaign had colluded with the Russian government. But because former Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein limited the investigation to criminal matters, the special counsel’s report stated that the evidence didn’t reach the criminal conspiracy standard.
• The Mueller team found that the president had attempted to obstruct justice on at least 10 occasions, but Barr simply dismissed the charges.
• The FBi never finished its counterintelligence investigation into the Trump campaign’s ties to the Russian government, nor has any other agency.
• No one who has investigated the origins of the Trump-Russia probe has found any evidence to support Barr’s claim that it was a “bogus scandal.”
These are facts that Attorney General Barr has attempted to obfuscate, and right-wing media continues to ignore.
Barr has two months left as attorney general, so he could still release a Durham investigation report. But if Waas and his sources are right, it is more likely that we’ll hear nothing further because the last thing Barr wants is a report that exonerates the Trump-Russia probe—proving, once again, that he can’t be trusted.

The Post Office just delivered a package to my house. My wife said it was my “half-birthday” present, since she did not get me a present on my birthday. (I don’t really do birthday celebrations.)
The package was from Sweden; it is a Swedish straight razor, along with a badger-bristle shaving brush, Swedish shaving soap, lavender after shave lotion, and a silver stand to hold the brush and razor, along with a leather and linen strop.
from personal experience i can tell you trying to keep a straight razor sharp on a strop is something that takes some skill.

On April 26, 2012, Shinkle, serving on the Michigan State elections Board of Canvasers, along with co-Republican Jeffrey Timmer, voted to reject[3] almost a quarter million voter signatures for a ballot initiative to repeal the Michigan Public Act 4 — Michigan’s Emergency Manager law.[4] The two Republicans rejected the petitions, saying that the “font size was not 14 point”, despite testimony from the printer that it was. The Republicans ruled that the font size of the letter “N” was smaller than required by state law, thereby invalidating the signatures.
I’ve never had a cranberry that wasn’t deeply sour and somewhat bitter. I like sour flavors, and sweet-sour stuff like lingonberry jam, but cranberries are just over the line. I’ve tried Craisins in recipes only to discover they’re considerably sweetened…which tends to get wiped away when they’re cooked, making them horrible chunks of tart-bitter.
I have no idea how you’d sweeten a batch up enough to make a pie.

I have never even heard of cranberry pie, and it is supposedly popular in MA? I don’t think so. I had two uncles growing up who ran bakeries so we had every type of pie at thanksgiving dinner and not once was there a cranberry pie.
Cranberries are for cranberry sauce. Maybe juice, especially with vodka.
re: #304 LeftyRambles2413 (HappyWarrior)
I like cranberry juice. I like cranberry sauce. I even like cranberries in “trail mix” stuff.
But a cranberry pie? Never had one.
When I was young we had holiday pies. Pumpkin, yes. Blueberry, yes. Cream pies (chocolate, etc.) yes. Cherry, yes. Apple, of course. Pecan, occasionally. Sweet potato, rarely.
But never cranberry.

re: #307 The Ghost of a Flea
I’ve never had a cranberry that wasn’t deeply sour and somewhat bitter. I like sour flavors, and sweet-sour stuff like lingonberry jam, but cranberries are just over the line. I’ve tried Craisins in recipes only to discover they’re considerably sweetened…which tends to get wiped away when they’re cooked, making them horrible chunks of tart-bitter.
I have no idea how you’d sweeten a batch up enough to make a pie.

Ok.
1. Sanders is no Trump. Nowhere near.
2. I, personally, think Sanders, like many others of his generation, makes an error in thinking that there is a difference between the struggle if the classes and the other struggles for justice. (Race, Sexism, LGTB&c)*
3. But Sanders, and to a lesser degree most of his supporters is on the right side.
No enemies on the left is a frequently mocked slogan, but in the absence of Lenin it is true.

re: #275 The Ghost of a Flea
I’m sorry but those are Barnum statements and I value general critical thinking too much not to point this out. You could seemingly-accurately apply them to anyone with power because they’re the things that everyone with power commonly does wrong. In fact, they’re so applicable to the people seen as the centrist alternative to Sanders that this merits…
[Embedded content]
This is pretty amazing. I scan posts here but when I get to yours I stop and read.

And, most generally, the internet encourages shallowness and performance by being a medium which elicits fast responses that try and provoke reaction from an audience…everything’s a show and the proper way to interact with information is as a viewer seeking personal engagement.
That’s going to fuck us up. Ideology—the why—is meaningless if there is no discipline is imposed on the process of thought—the how—or the base assumptions that inform the episteme—the what.
The right is what it is because there’s no episteme, and there’s central authority figures who specifically break apart anything that could be the kernel for one. All of the things they invoke function as symbols of authority, not texts that can be dissected and understood…and they’re demonstrating that right now with how they interpret voting, the Constitution, and “the law.”

1/2 c dark brown sugar to about 2 cups of cranberries
the 1/4 c of bourbon helps too
It does. Now how much does the recipe call for?
And we will, of course, now see one Republican leader after another congratulate Joe Biden as President-elect, correct?

Wow. So in the past few days, we learned that the globalist cabal owned election manipulation software they’ve been using to swing governments in their favor for years, and it was just used in the US elections to push Biden over the top.We learned that a team of prominent super-lawyers are in possession of all the evidence and are about to drop a bombshell so large, it will force a change of fortunes for Trump and return to the American people the true result they voted for.
The world’s largest media companies, who combined together to project a coordinated mass illusion of a Biden victory to whip up an angry and emotional human shield, will be exposed as compromised tools of the criminal globalist Deep State - and millions who are still under the spell of this industrialized deceit will be forced to re-evaluate everything they thought they knew.
And all this in the next few weeks. Heavy stuff. #GreatAwakening #Dominion

@TennesseeGinger @RhetoricalEntertainment @StormIsUponUs Exactly. It has to work its way through the legal process. We want it to go to the SC, but that requires failure in the lower courts. I think we’ll see some wins and losses, but the evidence will be ready for GO TIME in front of the Justices.

He and his sons are probably going to stage some kind of a stunt to shift the attention back to your favorite cheated president.

roasted a kabocha squash tonight with butter, ginger and honey.
we’ve been noshing on the result.
Leftovers will be a pie tomorrow.
raw, it smells like watermelon, tastes a bit like papaya.
roasted, it is transformed: nutty-flavored cross between a sweet potato and a pumpkin.
re: #301 LeftyRambles2413 (HappyWarrior)
We usually do Pumpkin/Apple or Pumpkin/Pecan but I think we’re doing Sweet Potato for the first time. Definitely doing some shaking things up since this is my mom’s first Thanksgiving without my Grandmother here and Mom wants to put her own take on it. We’re doing maple bacon Brussels Sprouts instead of Green Bean Casserole for instance.
maple bacon Brussels sprouts are the bomb
It should not have taken the ire of Congress and the American public to convince Administrator Murphy to do the right thing. Her actions were dangerous and Congress must ensure it never happens again.

When I lived in the far north of Japan my neighbors would invite me frequently to eat dinner (so that I could give English lessons to their kids, I think) and we often had kabocha and noodles as fall deepened.

With or without an Admiralty flag?
If you’ve spent the better part of the last three weeks supporting blatant attempts at instigating a coup and overturning a lawful election with lines like “let the courts decide” or “the media doesn’t call the election,” then feel free to stuff your grudging recognition of reality up your ass. It’s insincere, it’s made in bad faith, and you’re not forgiven!

I don’t think it says; I would assume that maritime laws would be critical is this situation, though.
Love our new system where we all vote, and then the votes get counted, and then the bullshit lawsuits are dismissed, and then a couple Republicans get to decide whether or not they feel like going along with reality, after being flown to DC to be pressured by the president.

Trump at the Inauguration? Don’t make me laugh. He is going on a surprise trip to the UAE on Jan 19 and never coming back to the USA ever again.

we did not deliberately plant kabocha…they were supposed to be a six-flat of zucchini plants from Rural King.
We have never been happier with getting the wrong thing. (And the alleged flat of summer squash turned out to be butternut squash…double win!!)
re: #304 LeftyRambles2413 (HappyWarrior)
Never done that either. I ike Cranberry sauce but I don’t think I’d like Cranberry pie. Now that said, I did pick up some Cranberry cider when I was at Trader Joe’s last night that is quite good.
I have a couple of apple pie recipes where adding cranberries to it is an option.
