Charlie Pierce has the good words.

Not Everything Is a Commodity. Not Every Human Interaction Has to Be a Deal.

This Christmastime, I hunger for something that exists only for its own sake, something that cannot be coined or bartered. I am tired of living in an emotional counting house.

Happy Christmas Eve, if you celebrate the holiday.

Happy Wintery Thursday, if you don’t.

I think the elf jumped off the shelf.

Not Every Human Interaction Has to Be a Deal.

Well, that’s not into what American society has evolved.

Life in America today: you are a brand. You are to sell your brand, and protect your brand.

Youtube, Tik Tok, Facebook, Twitter… whatever social media outlet can be used is to be used for your brand.

Every interaction in your life is a transaction. All your possessions are for transactions - your cat, your dog, your face…

Your associates and relatives are assets to be used in your brand promotion.

You are what your bank account and Bitcoin numbers say you are.

Either you are going up on the Forbes list, or you are going down.

Your value to others is your transaction ability. All deals are good, some are just better than others.

Your follower list is your method by which to evaluate your place on this planet.

Your credit score is important but it is also manipulatable.

Your looks matter. Beauty may be subjective, but you can always package your looks to benefit yourself in transactions.

But above all, remember that it’s not truth that matters, but your ability to sell yourself.

Well I fucked up. I waited too long before calling the Chinese takeout place with our Traditional Nittelnacht (Christmas Eve) order and it would not be ready until 9:00 which is WAY TOO LATE.

But I have chicken, I have bean sprouts, I have frozen eggroll & veggies so I can do what I did for years before the takeout place opened up, I CAN MAKE MY OWN ASIAN STYLE FOOD!!

It is the only kosher Chinese takeout in town. Not normally this busy, but it is the Traditional Night Of The Chinese Food.

Right, I figured that it would be busier than normal. I didn’t think it would be “multiple hour wait” busy. Mrs. Fish and I did Chinese takeout earlier this week; tonight, it’s to be junk food, video games, and maybe a Christmas movie after I get home from church.

Yeah, that explains it….

Bittersweet memories, though: til my wife got too sick to make it happen, we used to get all of her (formerly-large) family to come visit us in the City for “Jewish Christmas”: featuring, of course, an extensive offering of Kosher Chinese food; and (my contribution) a variety of quality single-malt Scotches. Doing our best to dispel ethnic stereotypes (in our case, the “Jews don’t drink” canard….)

Our congregation (conservative) has schnaps and hard liquor to celebrate end of services to go along with the wine (Manaschevitz, of course).

Weird people think Jews don’t drink when it is an integral part of Jewish life - cup of wine for Shabbat services, 4 cups during Seder, etc.

I love pizza for breakfasts. When I was a kid (2nd/3rd grade), my dad was working on his master’s degree at the state college in the next town over. The same school where my mom, dad, older brother and I all got our undergrad degrees. In the town, there is a pizza shop called Bob’s Pizza, where my parent had pizza for the first time when they were in college. On his way home from classes, my dad would always stop by Bob’s to bring us some pizza. I always looked forward to a piece of pizza for breakfast the next day. Every time I’m back east visiting my parents, I make sure to get some Bob’s pizza.

It’s 12:45 in MN and I’m still trying to get up the ambition to go shovel snow. There’s only about 3-4” with some deeper drifts here and there, but I’m not in a hurry to face the cold. It’s +8 right now and probably won’t get any warmer so I should do it soon.

This has been one crazy day for me. First I have to get to work by 7:30 am so that I can get out before noon. When I got home today I got my package from amazon. I was hoping that the fluorescent tube would not be broken. I was wrong. It rattled worse than the one that came to me earlier. I was so pissed that I told an amazon person that I was going to return it via the USPS no matter what they said. I got a refund for the latest broken tube and now I hope to calm down while watching Downton Abbey.

Yep, and by the end folks drifted off to rooms for more individualized partying. I liked hanging out there though. Most of the other frats were sort of one thing or another: KA was the southern conservative frat, AEPi was of course mostly Jewish kids, Sigma Chi totally WASPy. A thread for WWII history buffs.

For WWII history buffs, there is a Youtube series called “WWII in realtime” hosted by Indy Nidell. Once a week he posts a 15 minute or so video about what was happening that week 79 years ago as though its happening now, and its very engaging. The week of December 7, he posted ten 30 minute videos to follow Pearl Harbor minute by minute, along with a lot of background, and it was five hours of terrific tv. I highly recommend it, if you like this kind of stuff.

They think GHWB, McCain etc. were actually executed and at their funerals - at least at Bush’s - the traitors were handed out whatever to show they’re next, or something like that.

All their creepy fantasies about pedos and they’re the ones who support the guy who has settled accusations of sexual assaults on children on his properties and been accused of sexual assault of children.

Pedos are arrested and charged every day in this country. To the best of my knowledge not a single one of them had previously been accused or named by the Q-cult. Otoh, a fair number of Q-balls have themselves been arrested for such offenses. A Q cultist is not some delusional crank, worthy of pity. It is a consciously evil person. Treat them accordingly, personally, socially and in employment.

Oddly satisfying to watch this restoration of a 1978 Kenner X-Wing toy.

1978 Star Wars X-Wing Restoration - Luke Skywalker

Made it look out-of-the-box new. Granted, it was in pretty good shape to begin with, considering it’s a four decade old mass-produced toy.

Unless we’re incredibly lucky, we’ll still need to check in on the horrible things McConnell has done to Biden today.

Sources say Trump in recent days has brought the matter up to the vice president and has been “confused” as to why Pence can’t overturn the results of the election on January 6.

Pence and White House aides have tried to explain to him that his role is more of a formality and he cannot unilaterally reject the Electoral College votes.

Watching the GOES satellite loop, looked at the Upper Mississippi valley, and I see the shadow line whipping across those states, but… the shadow is ahead of the official sunset times (as found on the NWS websites, etc.)

Made me think what was going on.

I think I’ve decided is that what I am interpreting as the shadow line is just the beginning of the transition. The sun covers about a half a degree (from our distance from the sun), and it will sit partially on the horizon for several minutes, but not long enough to make up the 15-20 minutes that the visual on the satellite loop appears to be ahead of the official sunset times.

So I think the thickening of the path through the atmosphere, combined with the fact that there are many tropospheric clouds around the continent this evening, that I’m just seeing shadows of clouds really really stretched out.

Trump treats pardons as a transaction: what does he personally gain from them.

Does he gain loyalty?
Does he gain a vote?
Does he gain silence?
Does he cover up other crimes Trump committed?

That’s how he treats every last one of his pardons.

Make no mistake, but he’s shredded the rule of law to do this. He’s violated all the norms and standards when it comes to pardons. In fact, nearly all of his pardons have been done outside the normal channel of the Office of Pardon Attorney. Trump’s issued pardons to people like Arpaio despite not meeting the standards of the OPA.

It’s all because Trump doesn’t care about the law or how things are done. He just done it.

re: #180 sagehen

Thanks for some humor!

OK, my coworker invited me to tune in to her church’s Christmas Eve service. I liked singing the carols. My cat liked it too, she likes to hear me sing and she was purring her head off while I sang. That made me happy.

Then there was a video where the church promoted what it had done this year and I was all, yeah, yeah, this is good, giving food bags out, etc., but then it slipped to thanking God for people who had been “sexually redeemed”. I was all, “wait what?” and tried to scroll back the program but was unable to do so. Then I asked my coworker and she said: “oh my, did I miss that? WTH”. Then the pastor started in on the 10 lies we tell each other (e.g., “the check is in the mail”) and ended up with that old Ronald Reagan chestnut “I’m from the government and I’m here to help.” At that point I told my coworker I had to shut it down because that Reagan quote was a lie, but “the singing was nice anyway.”

I mean, YEAH, I should have expected this from a Vineyard church, but hell, I thought it was going to be just carols or lessons and carols and not *that*. Yikes. Oh yeah, this is a megachurch and it had less than 200 salvations and 200 baptisms last year. I suspect the number is *way* down over previous years.

Knowing their luck this year, the FL GOP would go through with such an idea…only for most (if not all) of the people whose pictures they put up either:

1. Still dealing weeks/months later with various complications from their infection

2. Buried under debt from the medical cost of fighting off such an infection

3. Largely falling into the “asymptomatic” camp and thus hard to portray as “survivors”

4. (for completion’s sake) Lying their asses off that they were ever infected in the first place

Yeah, the GOP is trying to take away mail in ballots for any registered voter without a “good reason” to have one. They saw a lot more voter participation with Stacey Abrams and her work, along with the ease of filling out your ballot at home and mailing it or taking it to a ballot box. They’re scared. They should be.

So on Christmas, as we celebrate the promise of human redemption and join in repeating Ebenezer Scrooge’s famous pledge, “I will honor Christmas in my heart and try to keep it all the year,” let us also remember the contributions that Scrooge and Marley and the wealth accumulators of our own age have made as “the founders of our feast.”
