Neither Donald nor Melania would be caught dead on the Delaware in the dead of night, in freezing temperatures. Freezing fog, on their skin? Come on, they have that fragile orange complexion to consider.

Side note: The most fun I’ve had with freezing fog was walking the mile or so across Minneapolis from U.S. Bank Stadium to my former offices in the -20 degree heat of a January day. My beard froze over from the moisture in my breath. I remember it mainly because I was dripping water from my chin for an hour after I reached the office building and was warming my hypothermic ass up.

Fuck. Second mutation with greater spread.
South African Covid-19 variant may be ‘more effective at spreading’

501Y.V2 is even more contagious than VUI 202012/01 (which has caused UK so much trouble). Both are present on the British Isles.

Looks like someone rolled a lucky number in round 2 of my hypothetical dice game…

Heard a report maybe a couple days ago that suggested the South African variant may produce more serious symptoms in younger people — but that wasn’t confirmed. And certainly wasn’t discussed in this article. But there is always the possibility that it could be like the 2nd wave of 1918 Spanish Flu — which produced a cytokine storm in younger patients that was highly lethal. Fortunately, with modern medical technology, the outcome would likely not be so dire this time.

re: #220 thedopefishlives

The mind boggles. Like, I get the town’s reasoning, flimsy though it is. They’re right; the racist dipshits running the church would have sued them citing the First Amendment. I don’t know if they would win that fight, especially given the new Supreme Court’s direction on saying that nothing, absolutely nothing, can interfere with the almighty liberty of the Church.

The town’s reasoning is not flimsy. They would be absolutely hammered in court over the I Amendment.

You don’t want either courts or governments saying what a “real” religion is, or separation of Church and State are gone.

There is nothing that prevents identifying anyone who goes to this church and either boycotting their business or firing them if an employee.

While you can’t do much about religion, you can absolutely make racism pay a price.

We just started the Mandelorian, and I had a thought: Someone should write a story where Star Trek is really about the early days of humans in space, and Star Wars is thousands of years later, where the glory days of exploration are over. That’s why everything is so grimy and cynical in the time of Star Wars, compared to how clean and idealistic things are in Star Trek.

re: #234 Dangerman; Not a Dr. & don’t play one on TV

you dont compromise what’s right; what’s constitutional, because of what it might cost in dollars.

you dont give in to economic blackmail.
you have the fucking battle.

What’s constitutional is churches are protected by the I Amendment as long as they are not specifically committing a crime.

You could have a fight against this specific church in a town of less than three hundred people and bankrupt your village fighting a battle against a constitutionally-protected activity (as odious as that activity is).

A frontal assault is not always the best way of prosecuting a battle, and as I mentioned above you really don’t want courts or governments saying what a “real” religion is.

You can make it economically unviable for any person to be a member of this church by firing employees or destroying their businesses.

Note Asatru has a Twitter account and is responding to people in that thread insisting they aren’t racist. (Twitter doesn’t have a problem with white supremacists, no surprise there.)

Brett Meiselas

Thanks to the help of some commenters below, it appears Kelly Loeffler *may* have been wearing a $3295 Alexander McQueen tweed jacket when she criticized wasteful spending and refused to support $2000 checks for suffering Americans.

I have jackets similar to that — purchased years ago — and they never cost more than $50 (probably less — because they usually were on sale). But with sufficient assets, you can certainly significantly overpay for outfits and never blink. Of course, I never knew —or cared about — designers, and so wouldn’t be bragging about wearing an Alexander McQueen. Hmmm — but she could have purchased it for the amazing low sales price of $1648.

At this point, there isn’t sufficient time to impeach and then remove him from office, especially given the holiday recess. Too late for that. It’s not clear that we are going to survive the 27.5 days remaining in his Presidency.

re: #82 Shiplord Kirel: Fan of USPS, Goodyear, and Oreo

I’ve been watching a documentary called the Black Market Express on Amazon. This is about the 1944 Balvano train disaster in Italy, one of the strangest and most tragic transportation disasters of the twentieth century, and the worst such disaster in Italian history. A steam freight train, with 4 passenger cars attached, and hundreds of free riders on and in the freight cars, stalled in a relatively short tunnel when it lost traction on icy rails. 520 people died of carbon monoxide poisoning, there were only about 90 survivors. Trains did not have radio in those days and the outside world did not know about the disaster until a severely ill crewman, one of just 2 to survive, walked 2 kilometers to the Balvano station and alerted the station master. There was an interview with 96 year old Giuseppe Motta, the station telegraph operator who was one of the first 6 rescuers to reach the stalled train.
The train itself was completely undamaged.

Is that where Ayn Rand got her murderous train story in “Atlas Shrugged?”

Has Sasse ever actually voted against Trump? Or has he voted to confirm all of his nominees and refused to vote to convict him after the impeachment trial. Sasse can go shut up somewhere. Useless.

No he has not. He is angling for the Susan Collins Concern of the Year Award.

What’s likely to happen here is a whole bunch of Trump supporters are going to turn on him.

That said, he was just reëlected so he’s probably safe for now.

That’s probably true, though there’s not much investigation needed here. The pardons were corrupt, hold the vote, send it to the Senate.

Failing that, Sen. Sasse could be calling for the XXV Amendment, but he won’t do that either.

The Republican Genocide must go on.

Ricketts eases Nebraska’s COVID pandemic restrictions just before Christmas (Omaha World-Herald, more at the link):

LINCOLN — Just in time for Christmas, Nebraska is lifting almost all pandemic-related limits on public gatherings and businesses.

Gov. Pete Ricketts announced Wednesday that he is rolling back health restrictions from level “yellow” to level “blue,” based on the steadily declining numbers of COVID-19 patients in Nebraska hospital beds.

The new health measures take effect at 12:01 a.m. Thursday. They are to stay in place unless hospitalization figures change.

The measures allow gatherings up to 75% of the maximum capacity of indoor spaces and recommend, but don’t require, that people be seated in groups of eight or fewer at restaurants, bars, weddings, funeral receptions and other venues.

They also recommend, but don’t require, that bar and restaurant patrons remain seated unless ordering food, using the restroom or playing games, and that staff and customers wear masks in salons, barbershops and other businesses where they cannot maintain 6 feet of distance. Elective surgeries are allowed without restriction.

Pence Should Remove Trump From Office on Sunday The New Yorker

It may seem extremely unlikely that Mike Pence, who up to this point has been one of Trump’s most craven enablers, would even consider taking advantage of this constitutional power. But it’s always possible that, between now and January 20 when Trump’s term expires, the situation may become so extreme that he and eight other Cabinet members may find the modicum of personal courage and moral decency necessary to do the right thing.

Trump would put up a fight, but it wouldn’t matter this late in his presidency. Once Pence has transmitted the letter to Congress that makes him acting president, Trump may contest the vice-president’s actions via a letter of his own. Section Four, however, would give Pence four days to respond to this letter. After Pence did so, the Democrat-controlled House of Representatives could — by simple majority vote — decline to act on the substantive dispute for the remaining 21 days. (Meanwhile, Democrats could filibuster any action in the Senate.) Were it not the end of his term, Trump would return to office after 21 days if Congress failed to act.

Not happening unless he literally starts a war, employs military to fuck with the election or something like that. He may even fire his way down the DOJ to appoint an AG that will appoint the Horseface as a special counsel, but all that will be theater. Langan’s support of conspiracy theories, including the 9/11 Truther movement (Langan has claimed that the George W. Bush administration staged the 9/11 attacks in order to distract the public from learning about the CTMU) and the white genocide conspiracy theory, as well as his opposition to interracial relationships, have contributed to his gaining a following among members of the alt-right and others on the far right.[10][11] Journalists have described certain of Langan’s Internet posts as containing “thinly veiled” antisemitism[10] and making antisemitic “dog whistles”.[11]

IQ tests tend to get a lot of grief from people (especially those who don’t score highly on them).

An IQ test is a scale to assess problem-solving ability and is an estimate (though an estimate with decades of statistics behind it now). It doesn’t measure your ability to reject bullshit.

ABC claimed his IQ was somewhere between 195-210.

Like most things measured on a bell curve, elements at the extremes (in this case people) become more difficult to measure accurately.

Deadbeat bet welch and accused felon state Attorney General Ken Paxton revealed to be an even bigger dirtbag by Wonkette.

So we just found out something fun. If by “fun,” you mean dumb and horrifying.

Back in May, when CARES Act funds were being doled out by the feds, indicted Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton wrote a letter to Trump Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin about the money that would be going to state and local governments in Texas.

Now, upon seeing that a state AG reached out to Treasury about money going to his state, it would be reasonable to presume that he was trying to get more money for his state and his constituents.

But “reasonable” is not a word anyone has ever used to describe Ken Paxton.

Absolutely astoundingly, the Texas Attorney General wrote to the US Department of the Treasury to request money be taken away from the biggest, most populous county in his state.

But wait, it gets better.

Andrew Yang Files Paperwork to Run for New York City Mayor (MSN)

Businessman and former presidential candidate Andrew Yang has filed paperwork to run for mayor of New York City, the city’s Campaign Finance Board confirmed on Wednesday.

Yang’s filing has the potential to immediately upend a race that was shaping up as a contest between long-entrenched city politicians. It comes just days after a new poll giving him a slight lead among his fellow Democrats running for mayor.

President Trump granted a pardon Wednesday to a former Prince George’s County canine police officer who was convicted of a federal civil rights violation for releasing her police dog on an unarmed homeless man in 1995.

A federal jury convicted Stephanie C. Mohr in 2001 on a felony charge after prosecutors said she set her dog to bite one of two men police stopped during a search for burglars in Takoma Park.

White House officials released a statement saying Mohr’s clemency is supported by the Law Enforcement Legal Defense Fund and the Fraternal Order of Police.

How is siccing a dog on a homeless person any different than beating a homeless person? It isn’t much of a step from that than shooting toddlers in the head. This is gateway bullying, Brownshirt bullying, and Trump admires it. He aspires to it. He pardons it.

It does seem that homeless people are viewed by a lot of conservatives as targets for sport (ask me how I know /s). They are somehow “lesser” or “deserving” of mistreatment because of homelessness; in our hyper-capitalist and individualistic society, homelessness is a personal moral failing.

Gah, I remember those photos, and they were horrifying. IIRC, at the time there were some side-by-sides of the Abu Ghraib dog siccing photos and photos of Nazis with their dogs.

I know POTUS-elect Joe has his German Shepherds, and he loves them, but every time I see one I think of them like the animal versions of monster trucks because of how assholes have used them as extensions of their dicks to scare and hurt or kill people. At one time they were a favorite of our own police. Before that, to keep brown people in line. Not to mention, fucking Hitler thought they were the perfect dog for the master race.

Brutalizing people with dogs is the oldest trick in the book, and it still works.

It’s the day before Christmas, so a good time to see under the topic “atheism” at YouTube to see all the hatred pouring out toward people like me.

Let’s see, some video headers:

“The Real Reason Atheism Exists”—Muslim, because atheists weaken Christianity in the West so Islam can emerge triumphant. (Then we’ll kill the atheists. Strangely, suggesting killing people gets you monetised on YouTube.)

“Honest Google Ad Angers Atheists”—Muslim, because we should all be shunned from society (and killed). Unsurprisingly, YouTube will take money to advocate for genocide.

“Atheists Say There Is No God When They Really Mean They Want No God in Their Life”—Greek Orthodox church lying about atheists

“All Atheists Are Potential Murderers So Do Not Be Alone With One”—Conservative Jewish Rabbi

“Is America Worth Saving?”—Christian apologist and history liar David Barton. His answer is “no” unless we make this into a Christian (read theocratic) nation.

“Do Atheists Have an Advantage?”—wingnut former cop J. Warner Wallace arguing because atheists do not believe in everlasting torment, they have an advantage in crime. Statistics show for decades atheists in the USA are the least likely to commit crimes. Lying for Jesus on Christmas Eve to demonise a minority group.

“Atheism Is Inherently Left-Wing”—Christian who notes that atheists vote north of 70% for Democrats according to Pew, therefore atheism is inherently left-wing. In the last election it was 95%, because they just want to sin, abort every foetus, redefine marriage. Never mind the other party wants to take our rights away from us, that couldn’t be it.

Happy holidays y’all.

We got fairly well buried; drifts were 18”-24” high. I ran my 25-year-old snowblower over the driveway this morning to clear a lane for Mrs. Fish to get some things for Christmas meals, and thankfully, the snowplows had already run, so I didn’t have to do it twice. The high today is supposed to be 4 degrees F (-15 degrees C); I can empathize with your plight regarding the water, indirectly. One of my previous companies bought a building in a historic district of downtown Minneapolis. One December morning, we all came into the office to discover that we had no water pressure in the building. As it turns out, the building - a former meat-packing plant - had a significant air leak where they had walled over the loading dock door when it was converted in the middle of the last century. That air leak just so happened to blow directly into the utility closet and onto the main water pipe. When the wind was just right, the pipe would freeze.

So you have a hot water pipe that goes from the heater/furnace to the kitchen, but no return pipe(s) to the heater/furnace?
Most homes in these parts have what’s called Varmvattencirkulation (Warm Water Circulation), where you have a return pipe for the hot water (mine goes through a tower heater in the bathroom (not allowed these days, has to be direct return))) to keep the hot water hot, and to prevent spots where you can get Legionella.
Could be an idea the next time you have to do plumbing work, tho no idea how economical it’d be, but it would prevent pipes freezing.

Our cyclone cellar isn’t heated, and when the weather goes below freezing, cold air sinks into it.

The kitchen pipes are also against the outside wall.

What I think I need to do with this is get the plumber to come in and install one of those new-fangled heat tape systems for our plumbing.

The plumbing is kind of an afterthought in this house anyway. It originally had no plumbing when it was built in 1914. Plumbing (and an indoor bathroom) was only installed when the state forced localities to do that to combat polio.

The village has had a water works for a long time, but many homes were not connected to it until the state forced them to do it. The last private wells and outhouses were closed in the 2010’s.

When the state forced Panhandle property owners to install indoor plumbing and sewage removal, a lot of properties were simply abandoned because it was cheaper to do that rather than backfit indoor plumbing. There are quite a few rural homes here which have been abandoned for fifty years or more, gradually falling down. A few villages in my area became ghost towns.

Our furnace is a floor model Montgomery Ward run by natural gas. It does not use water.

Water comes in from the mains from the front of the house to the back, where it then splits up to the various spickets. The hot water heater was new when we bought the house, but the staircase to the cellar is too small so the installers had to cut a hole in the kitchen floor to put it in (I really hope we never have to replace it).

I don’t know what the plumbing code over there says about retrofitting warm water circ, but apart from going over insulation of the pipework, that’s the only thing I see that could alleviate the pipe freezing problem.
TL;DR is having a small flow of warm water returning to the cold water input of the water heater from the furthest point of the warm water pipework.

re: #208 Teukka

Gopnik is most likely derived from the Russian slang term for a street robbery: gop-stop (Russian: гоп-стоп).[6]

[…]

Gopniks are often seen squatting in groups “in court” (на кортах, na kortakh) or “doing the crab” (на крабе, na krabe) outside blocks of flats or schools with their heels on the ground.[8][9] It is described as a learned behavior attributed to Russian prison culture to avoid sitting on the cold ground.[9]

Gopniks are often seen wearing Adidas or Puma tracksuits (mostly Adidas), which were popularized by the 1980 Moscow Olympics Soviet team.[10] Sunflower seeds (colloquially semki (семки) or semechki (семечки)) are habitually eaten by gopniks, especially in Ukraine and Russia. Gopniks can also be seen wearing flat caps and Adidas backpacks.

Gopniks are often associated with cheap alcohol, such as low-quality vodka and light beer, cheap cigarettes, low-end mobile devices, and sometimes firearms. They also utilize common Russian profanities and often behave rudely. Gopniks favor Lada Classics as their primary means of transport.

The subculture is stereotypically associated with Russian chanson music, specifically the blatnaya pesnya subgenre (prisoner’s songs, lyrics etc…); also, since the mid-2010s, in internet memes and viral videos, with hardbass and Russian rock.[11]

Some gopniks have Russian nationalism or Pan-Slavism as their primary political views,[12] though there are also leftist or even far-right gopnik communities. Some gopniks hold strong anti-Western views.[3]

Where our kitchen pipes freeze is directly below the floor of the kitchen under the sink.

You can envision the plumbing in my house as sort of a star, where one line comes in from the street, then splits up to go to the bathtub, bathroom sink, toilet, kitchen sink, and hot water heater.

The hot water heater’s outlet then splits up to go to the kitchen sink, bathroom sink, and bathtub.

None of the other pipes freeze as they run through the middle of the cellar; the kitchen pipes as they run up to the kitchen run against the west wall. The combination of draft and cold from the outside combine to freeze both pipes.

The usual solution for me is to turn on a milk house heater aimed at those pipes when I know it’s going to be cold, or to run a thin stream of water in the kitchen sink. Last night I was not aware it would be so cold.

BBC reports that the UK and EU have (finally!) approved a Brexit trade deal.

No details, yet: and the deal still has to be approved by the British Government and the EU; (and still, left to what seems to be virtually the last moment) but something….

Certainly is the last moment: The UK parliament will be recalled next Wednesday to vote on it. That is: Wednesday December 30th. The second last day before the transition period would run out, heralding a no-deal Brexit.

Also, it’s better than a no-deal Brexit, but the deal is still a hard Brexit, a possibility which was always played down as scaremongering by the Leave campaign in 2016.

So our dear Mr. Abramson is of the “Repeat a lie often enough, and it becomes the truth” school of journalism. Fuck him.

Perfected by Trump, whose version of reality has proved persuasive to 74 million voters; and his fantasy that he won the election seems to have taken hold among most of his followers. On Jan.6, let’s see how many in the Senate and House continue to act as though they believe him.

Certainly is the last moment: The UK parliament will be recalled next Wednesday to vote on it. That is: Wednesday December 30th. The second last day before the transition period would run out, heralding a no-deal Brexit.

Also, it’s better than a no-deal Brexit, but the deal is still a hard Brexit, a possibility which was always played down as scaremongering by the Leave campaign in 2016.

re: #180 Nyet

I am as pro-independence now as I was anti-independence then.

Well, what was interesting about the Scottish Independence referendum (aka “indyref”) in 2014 was that one of the major arguments in the debate in the run-up to the vote was that Scotland is very pro-EU, and therefore Scotland should stay in the UK as that was the best way to guarantee that Scotland stays in the EU. Of course, we all saw that one turned out…

It’s interesting to look at the figures. In 2014, Scotland voted 55% to 45% to remain in the UK. Therefore, Scotland voted more emphatically to remain in the UK, than the UK as a whole voted to leave the EU (52% versus 48%). Scotland also voted more emphatically to remain in the EU (around 66% versus 33%) than it did to remain in the UK.

So, if we take these figures as any indication, Scotland is more pro-EU than pro-UK, and therefore, if they had to make the choice between the two, would choose the EU over the UK. Indeed, the average of polls regarding indyref conducted this year is now almost a mirror of the 2014 vote, with an average of 53.2% supporting Scotland becoming an independent nation. In other words, a larger margin than the Brexit vote. Small wonder Boris Johnson is trying anything he can to avoid indyref2.

I’m honestly excited with how normal Biden is. But I also feel some representation as a fellow stutterer. I like Joe. Always have. Not embarassed to say that this was a vote for as much as a vote against. It’s nice to hear a President tout their team on their own individual merits and not their proximity to their ass.

UK is busy claiming that they’ve got themselves a deal for a soft Brexit. That’s only marginally better than a no-deal Brexit.

The reality is that Brexit totally fucks over the UK and will slow its economy further (notwithstanding the disastrous pandemic). It adds to costs and makes it harder for Brits to visit the mainland or vice versa. It slows commerce.

Brexit was barely passed on a lie, and now everyone in the UK suffers for it after years of false starts and failures to get a proper exit.

Russia couldn’t be happier with the end result: weakened EU and chaos.

Odd thing, in all the crowing about the “Brexit deal”* just passed (well, Bojo/Tories/wingers crowing, anyway), so far, most of the focus has been about tariffs and fishing rights: and not a word (AFAICT) about what they plan do do with the Irish border. “Ireland” hasn’t even been mentioned in the various reports I’ve seen.

Turf fight for Trump’s favor. Which is how Trump operates and what he desires. Plus if one of them gets shot down it would be claimed I suppose that it doesn’t reflect poorly on the other’s lousy lawyering.

Well, he did give a reason. The driver rolled his window up.

I know it’s hard, but if cops pull that kind of power trip on you, you have to be assertive back. Most of the time, be polite to cops. In that particular situation, verbally kick their ass. “Is there some reason why you wound your window up?” “Yes, officer, there was.” “And why was that?” “None of your fucking business. Now am I free to go, or am I being detained?” It’s a really fine line, but lots of these guys are ex-military. If you don’t crack them back when required, they will roll right over you. Easier to do when you become an old codger like me, and definitely look like you’ve got money to burn in a fuck-you lawsuit if it comes to that.
