Joanna Newsom: “Leaving the City”

Music • Views: 25,565

YouTube

I’ve always loved this song by Joanna Newsom, and was pleasantly surprised when YouTube recommended this excellent live performance. (I’m not always pleasantly surprised by YouTube’s AI recommendations.)

Hay, and a clean stall,
and ivy on a garden wall,
and a sign saying Sold,
and an old coat
for the bad cold.

I believe in you.
Do you believe in me?
What do you want to do?
Are we leaving the city?

On the black road,
through the gold fields,
while the fields are plowed,
towards what we are allowed…

The bridle bends in idle hands
and slows our canter to a trot.
We mean to stop, in increments, but can’t commit.
We post and sit, in impotence:
the harder you hit, the deeper the dent.
We seek our name.
We seek our fame, and our credentials
(paned in glass, trained to master incidentals).
Bleach our collar, leech our dollar from our cents:
the longer you live, the higher the rent.

Beneath the pale sky,
beside the red barn,
below the white clouds,
is all we are allowed.
Here, the light will seep,
and the scythe will reap,
and spirit will rend, in counting toward the end.

In December of that year,
the word came down that she was here.
The days grew shorter.
I was sure, if she came ‘round,
I’d hold my ground. I’d endure.
But they’d alluded to a change
that came to pass,
and Spring, deranged,
weeping grass and sleepless,
broke herself upon my windowglass.

And I could barely breathe, for seeing
all the splintered light that leaked her fissures,
fleeing, launched in flight:
unstaunched daylight, brightly bleeding,
bleached the night with dawn, deleting,

in that high sun,
after our good run,
when the spirit bends
beneath knowing it must end.

And that is all I want here:
to draw my gaunt spirit to bow
beneath what I am allowed.
Beneath what I am allowed.

From down stairs:

The more I look at that guitar, the worse the urge gets. Anyone here familiar with this one? Ibanez Artcore AS7312 12-String Semi-Hollow electric.

Just noticed that’s a 12 string. I tried playing one of those once.

Once. That thing was impossible. Gave me much respect for people who can actually pull that off.

Actual Gibson or Epi?

My urge has been either a 12 string or a mandolin and this 12 string is calling to me. Ibanez has a good name unlike many of the other Cheap guitars too.

From RWC downstairs:

Go for the camera. Easier to use in public than the gun and probably less frustrating than guitar to get better with. By the way, I will be camera shopping soon. SLR Canon. I want a film camera for that particular film stock look especially Tri-x b&w grainy and pushed.

Do you want/need autofocus? If not, older Canon FD cameras and lenses are high quality and silly cheap. Look for an A-1 or a T-90. Both were tanks and exquisite cameras.

My favorite EOS for the EF autofocus lenses was the A2E. Beautiful camera with eyetracking focus points. The wheel on the back, however, is fragile.

Never used one in anger as I was doing Zeiss/Kiev Contax rangefinders at that time. But all the EOS cameras are good solid cameras. The “E” ones also have the eye tracking and I believe it’s got the Canon spot meter mode that is insanely useful. That’s something Nikon could learn from them.

Christian pastor: Satan infiltrated the ‘courts of Heaven’ to block Trump’s reelection

COMMENTS
For years, the pro-Trump evangelical cult has been telling their followers that Donald Trump was sent by God, that he has a divine mandate, and that his reelection would be nothing less than the will of God. But with Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 election and the growing realization that the effort to overturn his victory is getting a hard dose of reality, some the Trump cult are having to rationalize and come up with new explanations for their prophecies.

Speaking on The Jim Bakker Show this Monday, Pastor Robert Henderson, who once suggested that his prayers were responsible for the death of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, (WHAT A PIECE OF SHIT THIS PIMP IS!) tried to do a little damage control in light of the fact that Biden is destined to be sworn into office.

When asked by host Jim Bakker what he thought about Trumpworld’s recent string of defeats in the Supreme Court, Henderson said they “took the easy way out,” so now the matter is entirely up to the “courts of heaven.”

Bakker then asked if Satan is “coming against the United States in the courts of Heaven right now.”

Henderson said yes, and added that while he thinks God clearly has the power to do whatever he wants, it’s up to Christians to give him a boost now and then, and a lack of enthusiastic Trump-supporting Christians could be responsible for Trump’s fledgling effort to overturn the election.

I borrowed one to play on my high school band’s album on one song. It sounded great. It’s also great if you use it as a one off and don’t have to deal with stringing and tuning.

I’m on a FB group called Old Images of Philadelphia. The photos are great; the toxic nostalgia, not so much. One of the bigger refrains you’ll hear on there is “Things were so much better back then “with “Back then” being anywhere from 1850 to 1964. Usually delivered by white people who may just be a bit clueless about how miserable things were for the non-white folk.

Anyways, one thing that either shuts them up or gets them PO’d is when you remind them how primitive health care was in them good ol’ days.

For a guy that’s a huge POS, Satan sure gets his way a lot. He must pull his best tricks when God is in the bathroom and can’t hear what he’s up to.//

It’s pathetic some adults need a puppet show acted out for them with certain characters to understand the why or how of something that happened. And worse, then some money grubbing pulpit gets to interpret the puppet show for the masses, like a critic reviewing a movie. We have God’s will or Satan did it, and facts don’t matter.

Last summer I used my “stimulus” money to rehab my 1965 Gibson non-reverse (the one not much sought after). It had become unplayable: bronze nut didn’t hold strings in place, frets were nubs, action was shit, P-90s had dried out and were microphonic, etc. I spent $600 to have all of that repaired, including having the pickups re-potted and the electronics overhauled. It’s amazing. It plays better than it ever did even when I got it in 1978.

I remember Jerry Briskin (associate producer of The Time Tunnel) talking about a script that ABC rejected involving a technician who jumped into the Tunnel and landed in September 1929 right before the stock market crash and he tried to engage in speculation to short the market and make Black Monday even worse. Tony and Doug landed found out the guy made millions and planned to make a bigger killing right before the market crashed. Tony and Doug stopped him, the guy got hit with a margin call and wound up destitute. Last scene was the guy trying to sell apples in 1930.

ABC rejected the script because it showed a rich man in a bad light…

Toxic nostalgia drives me nuts. I encounter it a lot in discussions of vintage television, where people insist on believing the world in which they lived was a virtual Mayberry, when I know as a student of history and from listening to my grandparents’ tales of growing up in the twenties, and surviving the Great Depression and the war years that it wasn’t.

Christian pastor: Satan infiltrated the ‘courts of Heaven’ to block Trump’s reelection

*snip*

Henderson has been shilling this Courts of Heaven shtick *hard* for the last decade or so. Basically, it’s a really great example of how you can read *anything* into the Bible and set up grift preying on people who are convinced they’re not getting the promised blessings because they haven’t said/done the right thing in the “Courts of Heaven.” Oh, and this legal mumbo jumbo absolutely has nothing to do with the law as we know it, or much of anything else. But Henderson is making money hand over fist with this scam. (For the record, there are other Evangelicals who think Henderson is making it up out of his head and wish he’d stop, but why would he as long as the ca$$$$h is rolling in?)

There’s a church on the other side of Phoenix where the pastor says that Henderson is his apostle. Personally, I hope that Henderson and the rest of the prophesying pulpit pimps are brought low by Biden’s inauguration.

Yeah, I’d go back and see Hendrix, and then I’d come back to real life where antibiotics cured infections.

But these people don’t want to time travel, they actually want regression to something much more primitive, where all the knowledge is gone, the easy fixes are gone, the medicine is gone, there were brutal consequences to everything, and they want that shit for everyone, because somehow science and convenience “ruined” the country.

Anyone wants to life a simple life, go right ahead, but there’s a fuck of a lot of undue misery that comes with it. What they’re saying is, they yearn for misery born of simplicity. And that kind of life is better, and everyone should live that way.

Fuck no. And fuck them for glorifying that shit. It’s just more cherrypicking the “better” parts.

And you know who can’t let that shit go about how everything used to be better? The GOP. You never hear that from the libs. It’s because the GOP is anti-science, anti-equality, anti-everything, and they prefer a ruling class where people are happy to go to their jobs, believe everything the church tells you, subsist on nothing, and shut up about it because there is no safety net or alternative. It’s that or die, simple as that. That’s the ‘simple’ in their vision of simplicity.

if the libs want a simpler life, they subscribe to Mother Earth News, build a modest home (or restore a homestead) and make goat milk soap, which they sell on the fuckin’ internet. They bought their property because they made enough money to save for it, or sold their other home. Their dogs still get rabies shots. They order from Amazon.

That’s the difference.

I’ve got a beat-to-shit 1979 The Paul whose electronics have long since given up the ghost. I need to do what you did.

Hint: It wasn’t. You have babies dying from everything, kids working in coal mines, POC treated like farm animals, women trapped in the home unable to vote, no tampons, scrub boards… If they want to live an unenlightened and primitive life, buy property in the wilds of Alaska, but don’t post your homebuilding and survivalist videos on YouTube, because no internet for you, asshole. Your surviving kids will be packing water like oxen and Old Yeller dies of rabies. If that isn’t a fucking Hallmark card, what is?

Jack Burton  Dec 30, 2020 • 5:03:38pm

I’ve been looking into the radio signal from Proxima Centauri.

Narrow bandwidth (compared to natural radio phenomena), centered on 982 MHz. Everyone has been saying there’s nothing on 982MHz but that’s not exactly true.

FCC lists that part of the radio spectrum (960 MHz to 1164 MHz) to Aeronautical Radionavigation.

My video card Geforce 2060 GTX has something in it that operates at 982MHz (and an electrical signal oscillating at a particular frequency can potentially emit RF at that frequency.)

This discovery could be set off by a PC in the building, or by ILS or something at a nearby airport.

FWIW (which is probably less, even, than Trump’s cheesy “coin”, to be sure), I’m guessing the card is probably about 5 x 5 in. (12.5cm) - and the medal about 3 in. (?7 cm) in diameter.

Big or small, it’s still butt-ugly and offensive. Maybe they are planning* a huge mintage to send out to COVID victims as a “memoriam” to their departed loved ones….??

I think because the judges are supposed to be dispassionate and stick with what is procedural, especially in such volatile circumstances. If Roberts makes this personal, he knows a gazillion Qs and klukkers have his home address. Still, no previous case (I know of) ever charged or involved Roberts with selling children, so the assumption he has to respond to an unproven and outrageous claim might raise an eyebrow or two.

Cleo update:
Different vet this time, which sucks but I took the first available appointment. She starts antibiotics for two weeks after her next meal, an antihistamine, and continue with the apoquel. She also has medicated shampoo which has to be used twice a week. And, oral omega 3s as well as a topical spray containing omega 6s. No skin test, the doc thinks it could be food related or when she was groomed they used something on her that triggered a serious allergic response. She is still shedding like mad, but the apoquel has stopped the itching and she’s able to rest. She’s also a bit overweight, because she keeps hurting her mommy person who is the one who throws things for her to chase and works with her outside. I can’t do that if I am injured. (I literally cannot lift my hands higher than my chin right now) Once the meds are over and done, we start looking at diet and then I have no clue what. 350 bucks for all of it.

I also had an eye appointment today and found out I am developing cataracts. Which the last doc I saw at that location(he passed a couple years ago from prostate cancer), never fucking told me. It’s been on my chart since 2016. I’ve been going there since 2003. So that’s fantastic. We haven’t had vision insurance for 3 yrs, we decided to pay a year all at once and both of us get decent glasses while we had a bit of extra money from side work. I’m supposed to have a new pair yearly, so I was overdue. 300 dollars. So there goes our “stimulus check”, plus a little more.

Cleo is sleeping at my feet, chasing bunnies in her sleep. I ate an edible and am laying on a heating pad. I have earned a break.

Thanks to Josh Hawley, Barr’s sudden resignation, and the DOD refusal to cooperate with Biden, I am having severe 2016 PTSD.

Yes — the experts say it’s all over — there’s nothing that Trump can do at this point; the courts have refused to go along with his nonsense, the EC has met and elected Biden. But if there is anything we know about Trump, it’s that the law and ethics are not roadblocks to his plans; they are ignored and irrelevant — to him and his enablers in the GOP. The military may obey the Constitution but DOD Trump cultists have no such loyalty. Trump’s return from Mar-a-Lago bodes ill for what indeed may be planned for January 6th. So I’m on the ledge again and won’t be getting off until Biden gets the official vote on the 6th. I don’t trust that weasel Pence to do what’s right.

So the employee was probably an anti-vaxxer. Hopefully they will be charged, convicted, and sent to prison for this outrageous crime.

I agree with you, but what is the crime?

And why didn’t they have a simple lock on the ‘fridge?

There’s a fair amount of incompetence all the way down. Vaccines must be tracked with chain-of-custody documents that go from cradle-to-grave. Once you get vaccinated, you will receive a document, a legal document, that will allow you to travel, eat out, &c.

What if the individual hadn’t moved the entire batch out of the ‘fridge but just switched out half of the vial’s contents with saline? Upwards of 250 people would have been given the “vaccine”, and the legal documentation, when they hadn’t been vaccinated.

The person who removed the vials may a Q-Ball/Anti-vaxxer. Whatever. But the FAULT lies with the health care org that allowed it to happen.

And that’s the REALLY scary part, that they didn’t have any idea of what they were doing.

Incidentally, with all the recent hyperventilation about the slowness of vaccinations so far, my daughter pointed out that part of the issue right now is scheduling who is being vaccinated when. You can’t just vaccinate all the nurses on the morning shift in the hospital at the same time, or all the obstetricians or whatever, because some of them will have reactions that keep them home for a day or two and you don’t want to be understaffed.
I also understand that they’re having some difficulties in getting consent from some nursing home residents, or their families in a timely fashion and they can’t have the people doing the vaccinations keep coming back.

The problem is at least in part the usual over-promising by the Trump administration along with handing off the responsibility to someone else.

The fact it is being given away for free is irrelevant. The moderna vaccine costs about $35 per dose that somebody had to pay. That means the value of 570 doses is north of $17000 of property that was destroyed.

Exactly, and strictly screen anyone who has access to them. Does the system fail sometimes? Sure. But chain-of-custody documentation, screening employees for access, cameras, and smart-locks will catch bad actors quickly.

If you weren’t prepared to secure the vaccine safely and without it being tainted/destroyed, you shouldn’t have been registered to receive the vaccine. Full stop.

This registration should have begun in the summer when the Feds said they would be in in charge of distribution.

Guess what didn’t happen? Any kind of coordinating registration.

And now we are in a situation where a Q-Ball/Anti-vaxxer who happens to work in a facility that is receiving the vaccine can monkey-wrench it.

Feel safer?

Sabotage is the crime.

If the vaccine had been treated as a real national security resource, that may have been relevant. But let’s face it, transport is by UPS, FedEx, and the USPS, not the military. Government security may meet shipments and provide secure transport to designated receiving points, but after that it’s a clown game of who’s in charge and what level of security is required to meet metrics.

Because the Feds, despite the clarion call of

“We’ll Be In Charge!!”,

set up no metrics whatsoever.

It’s a classic Drumpf program.

1) We are going to do this Thing!
2) It’s going to be a beautiful Thing!
3) The thing exists in a vacuum because no money is actually allocated to make the Thing work. In addition, the Thing has no real checklist or metrics to measure success.
4) As the Thing swings into action, it starts to fall apart because it has no structure or metrics.
5) Trumpf yells that the Thing is working exactly as planned and the States are at fault.

The sad fact is that he is correct on the last bit. The Thing is working perfectly because it was designed to fail. Government cannot work. It must fail. If it’s not the Feds, it’s the States.

But this whole Del Rio Goat Fuck was designed to fail from the beginning. It worked perfectly.

“Now that this group [nones] is one of the largest religious groups in our country, as political pollsters, political scientists, the media make political projections, I think it’s important that they understand this group of non-affiliated Americans is not a monolithic group, they’re not all the same,” he said.

Schwadel noted the study also found that agnostics are the most politically active, more likely to vote, and report that they feel politically isolated from their families, while atheists were politically active, too, but were more likely to have conflicts with others over politics.

Nones, or “nothing in particular” were the group found by the University of Nebraska to be the least engaged in politics of any “religious” group. Atheists and agnostics lean heavily Democratic.

For decades, research examining the intersection of religion and politics counted the religious “nones” — or the unaffiliated — as a small, homogeneous and liberal group, and conservatives have treated them as such.

But the number of religiously unaffiliated has grown exponentially to become one of the largest demographic groups in the United States, reaching 23% of the population. This begs the question, do religious nones still cluster on the blue end of the political spectrum?

As long as Democrats continue to ignore “nones,” nones will not engage in politics. Despite the GOP painting Democrats as godless heathens, it is Christians in the Democratic Party who prevent outreach, or simply don’t see it as necessary.

(None is a functional atheist if not an openly-declared one, since saying your an atheist opens you up to discrimination, threats, harassment, tossed out of your home if your a minor, and murder.)

Of course, we could simply cede nones to the GOP if they figure out that approaching one-quarter of the nation is a winning strategy first.

More purple than blue: Religiously unaffiliated vary in political beliefs (Goes to the University of Nebraska at Lincoln)

Not that specific one, but I have an Ibanez hollowbody that I like a lot. I feel like I got a lot of bang for the buck. It looks and feels like it was put together remarkably well given the price point. I’m still getting used to the thickness of the body, but I really like the neck (I do not have big hands or Paul Gilbert fingers.) It’s pretty thin. I have had no problems or complaints with the frets. Unplugged, it clearly doesn’t sound anywhere as nice as my acoustic, but that would be asking a lot .
I almost immediately went and spent about the same as I did on the guitar on a set of P-Rails, so I can’t say anything one way or the other about the stock pickups.

How do you make a mix tape for someone nowadays?

You start by purchasing blank cassettes, such as standard Type 1 (normal bias) TDK D-90s through LGF’s Amazon affiliate link.

amazon.com you’d rather have higher quality tapes, then you can buy Type 2 (high bias CrO2)
amazon.com

Then you need a cassette recorder. Since there are so many different ones, this is a list with the search term “portable cassette recorder.”

amazon.com

After that, record away.

Hope that helped. /s

Also, helpful to have one of these:

Your mileage may vary, but where I live, you can easily pick up one of these systems - fully functional - for less than $50. Omaha woman sues insurance company for denying claim after her husband died of COVID (Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald)

An Omaha woman has sued Farmers Insurance alleging the company refuses to make good on her husband’s $350,000 life insurance policy after he died of COVID-19 in May.

It is believed to be among the first cases like it to hit the state’s courts.

Attorney Thomas Campbell said Jose Gaytan named his wife, Vaneza Ramos, as the beneficiary. But after Gaytan died May 31, the company issued an “inexplicable denial” of her claim Sept. 22, he said.

Ramos filed a lawsuit in Douglas County District Court seeking full payment, plus attorney fees. This month, the case was transferred to U.S. District Court of Nebraska.

In an answer to the complaint, Farmers New World Life Insurance Co. acknowledged that the policy was issued to Gaytan on Nov. 28, 2018, and listed Ramos as the sole primary beneficiary.

But attorney Victor Rawl Jr. said Farmers rescinded the insurance policy and sent Ramos a refund check for $17,360 after Gaytan’s death due to “misrepresentation and/or concealment of materials facts,” about his medical history.

Rawl didn’t elaborate on the alleged misrepresentation.

Life insurance is not covered by the ACA.

The court case should force the company to disclose why the claim was denied.

That said, this is the libertarian paradise. You have a “contract dispute,” a single woman can take on a multi-billion dollar corporation in court.

On this date in 1946, President Harry S Truman signed Presidential Proclamation 2741, CESSATION OF HOSTILITIES OF WORLD WAR II (goes to the Truman Library)

With God’s help this nation and our allies, through sacrifice and devotion, courage and perseverance, wrung final and unconditional surrender from our enemies. Thereafter, we, together with the other United Nations, set about building a world in which justice shall replace force. With spirit, through faith, with a determination that there shall be no more wars of aggression calculated to enslave the peoples of the world and destroy their civilization, and with the guidance of Almighty Providence great gains have been made in translating military victory into permanent peace. Although a state of war still exists, it is at this time possible to declare, and I find it to be in the public interest to declare, that hostilities have terminated.

NOW THEREFORE, I, HARRY S. TRUMAN, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim the cessation of hostilities of World War II, effective twelve o’clock noon, December 31, 1946.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the United States of America to be affixed.

DONE at the City of Washington this 31st day of December in the year of our Lord nineteen hundred and forty-six, and of the Independence of the United States of America the one hundred and seventy-first. [SEAL]

Reason number I Don’t Know on why I’m glad I never opened a Fascistbook account.

Happy New Year, America! Your Friends And Family May Be Absolute F*cking Morons (Wonkette)

“It’s time we had this conversation.”

Over the last year, we have personally noticed something disturbing, mostly on Facebook, which is the official internet home for disturbing things. There aren’t a lot of Trump supporters in our own personal Facebook feed. That’s by design. What few are there, we probably muted them a long time ago.

But yet over the last year, we’ve noticed some memes going around, just absolute conspiracy theory bullshit, really bugfuck stuff. Stuff about Chrissy Teigen deleting 60,000 tweets and blocking a million people, Tom Hanks getting Greek citizenship for NEFARIOUS reasons, Justin Bieber’s song “Yummy” being secretly about how he was a Pizzagate victim, Chris Cornell from Soundgarden “committing suicide” (yes, in scare quotes) while working on a child sex trafficking documentary.

It’s QAnon shit. It doesn’t say QAnon, but it’s QAnon shit. QAnon as in the rebranded Nazi blood libel conspiracy theory made up by an anonymous idiot on the internet.

Again, we are not Facebook friends with Trailer Park Cletus, because we don’t know him. This is creeping in to otherwise normal people’s Facebook feeds.

Well, wouldn’t you know it, but according to a new NPR/Ipsos poll, fully 54 percent of Americans think at least maybe there is a secret child sex ring cabal of Satanists that secretly controls the media and politics. Fully 17 percent are like yep that is a true thing that is just true. Thirty-seven percent are open to the idea, because maybe.

This discovery could be set off by a PC in the building, or by ILS or something at a nearby airport.

or it could be someone using a decent gaming card on proxima centauri.

They’re all pandering to the same reactionary know nothing base that sustained and covered for Trump. They are all pushing the same conspiracy theories and agitprop. They’re still pushing this crap.

And they will keep pushing it and getting more extreme in their messaging going forward:

Cornyn, Cruz, Hawley, Rubio. All of them.

They’re still radicalizing and normalizing the right wing extremist ideologies. They’ve mainstreamed the conspiracy theories and fantasy thinking.

But they aren’t doing it alone. They’re doing it with the wink/nod of many media outlets, and the full-throated approval of others.

That includes such “august” institutions as the NYT. Gatekeeper news orgs that should know better, but have decided that there must be balance in news between fact and lie as though they are equivalents that have to get equivalent coverage.

Media outlets have learned nothing. They’ve decided that eyeballs is all that matters.

Tuesday’s snow sure caused a lot of car crashes on Wednesday though. I think we’re forgetting how to drive while staying at home. I know driving has felt oddly foreign to me for about 6 months.

How much snow did you get? Only 2” at my location, although I did have to shovel the snow ridge created Monday when the city finally realized they hadn’t plowed my side of my street after the Christmas snow. Just went to the hotel website to see what you get for that kind of money. Looks like the lowest room rate is now over $7000 but they aren’t standard rooms, they are executive suites and there are only like 4 of them left on the 5th. The most expensive one, the Franklin Suite is over $15000.

None of them come with a free Harley or anything, so I am not sure why anyone would pay that much for a room(or rooms) for one night.

Greetings,

I’ve been the owner of the six string version of this guitar going on 20 years. Not sure if anything basic has changed in that time. It’s a good twanger. Nothing really special but no complaints on the sound or playability.
One thing that annoys me is the floating bridge, key word is floating. I’ve accidently moved it a few times, talking tiny amounts but it does screw up the intonation. The bridge has adjustment screw for this but I don’t have a good enough ear to properly set them. Might not be an issue for you.
Been thinking about having a luthier I know to permanently mount it after he finish up the acoustic I have him working on.

St. Paul has a 2-day system where they plow one side overnight and the other side the next day. They missed the second step in my whole little neighborhood.

We had about 3”, pretty light and fluffy. I ran the snowblower over it, while my neighbor across the road opted to shovel his for the exercise. With a nicely sloped, south-facing driveway, he can afford to do that, the bastard. Our town is small enough where the plows run it all in one day, but my location is near the end of the run, so when I go back to the office, many times I will have just finished clearing the driveway and preparing to leave for work when the plows will come past my driveway and leave me with more to do.

I had a high-stress dreams again last night where I was out and realized I wasn’t wearing a mask. I was in a doctor’s office when a bunch of his maskless friends decided to visit. Went out to my car to get my mask and the passenger door latch fell apart.. Went around to the driver’s side and the doors were completely smashed in. That’s all I can remember.

Not to be a downer, but…Trump attracts rich people because rich people live in the same personalized narcissistic bubble and have the same energy, so he’s not wrong to bet on this.

Also, there’s clearly a bunch of people who think Trump’s going to be a kingmaker regardless of Jan 20, and Trump is very clear about the buy-in.

I’ve got a sloped south-facing driveway too, but the building across the street from me blocks the sunlight from 3/4 of the driveway in the weeks around winter solstice. It won’t get full sun until March. The driveway is only about 25’ long so shoveling wasn’t a burden ‘til I hit the plow ridge.

We got about 5” here before the storm moved on toward you. South of us in Sidney they got about 12”. Snowfall was much heavier in the Panhandle than it was in Wyoming.

In other words, everyone benefits from the runup. Trump profits, and the companies renting the room get the tax writeoffs.

Yeah, that makes sense. My north-facing driveway is entirely shaded for the majority of the winter because of the house, so I will have at least some snow on it until probably around March no matter how much work I put into it.

I’m trying to figure out numbers.

There’s about 6100 hospitals nationwide.
There’s about 15,600 nursing homes nationwide. - 21,700 total health facilities.

This doesn’t include urgent care facilities. There’s nearly 10,000 of those.

Why does this matter? If we’re trying to distribute vaccines, these are the nodes. These are where the vaccines have to go.

According to KFF, there’s almost 17 million health care workers in the US. There’s 2.1 million nursing home residents.

So, there’s about 20 million people who are in the first wave of people who should get vaccinated. Just over 10% have gotten vaccinated in the first 3 weeks since vaccines got emergency use authorization.

The entire situation is a clusterfuck, because distribution has been a mess, states/localities don’t have funds to distribute. And we’re going to watch doses expire because they aren’t getting where they need to go. Then there’s the sabotage and antivaxxer bulkshit accounting for more harms.

While there’s the conspicuous rich like Trump who wants to flaunt wealth because they’re so insecure and need the validation, there are others like Buffett who don’t buy new cars every year, spend wantonly and excessively, and stay at more affordable locations because that’s how they made their money by being judicious in their spending.

Sure, I can afford to stay at a hotel with $1000 a night rates, but why would I do that if I can stay at a place for $100 a night for 10 nights?

I have a similar dreams. Like I need to be somewhere at a VERY specific time to do something I’ve always wanted to do (for example meet Patrick Stewart) and everything that could go wrong does go wrong:

- My alarm doesn’t go off
- My car breaks down
- Someone I am with INSISTS on stopping for food
- There’s bad weather
- There’s a traffic jam
- There’s a terrorist bombing
- etc.

You get the idea and inevitably even IF I somehow manage to get where I need to be relatively on time…I always wake up right before the cool thing happens.

But the most telling part here is his statement that none of his colleagues who are telling him they are planning to vote to challenge the Electoral count actually believe any challenges

I thought Sasse’s own designation of the most telling part was accurate:

From where I sit, the single-most telling fact is that there a giant gulf between what President Trump and his allies say in public - for example, on social media, or at press conferences outside Philadelphia landscaping companies and adult bookstores - and what President Trump’s lawyers actually say in courts of law. And that’s not a surprise. Because there are no penalties for misleading the public. But there are serious penalties for misleading a judge, and the president’s lawyers know that - and thus they have repeated almost none of the claims of grand voter fraud that the campaign spokespeople are screaming at their most zealous supporters.

How are all the lizards “celebrating” New Years Eve? I’ve got some class prep I should do this afternoon since the new quarter starts Monday, but the eve will be pretty quiet in the Teddy household. Teddy is ringing out the new year with some chicken, rice, carrots and peas for breakfast and dinner. He’s living the high life.

Mrs. Fish and I are going to drink ourselves stupid, possibly indulge in some junk food snacks, and watch anime shows. Not sure what we’re doing the rest of the day for food. Tomorrow we will watch the Doctor Who special once it goes live on my Amazon account.

We’re having two friends over - both of them are like us, working from home since early Spring and strictly limiting how much they leave the house. We were supposed to have gotten together for Thanksgiving but it didn’t happen, so there will be a turkey.

And the Knicks are playing and they’ve actually been pretty watchable so far this season. And probably some weed and beer involved. And I might get some studio time in before they get here. Livin’ it up as usual.

And remember what happened in the early 1860s when a tyrannical minority lost an election and saw an erosion of power coming.

(Though I’d also personally argue that they essentially hurt their own cause. An attritional political retreat would have probably dragged out slavery in the United States until at least the 1880s, not have resulted in the various post-Civil War amendments, and gotten Jim Crow-ish laws implemented in any case. I also assume that that the Democrats would have gotten the White House back all the sooner as well.)

re: #326 Hecuba’s daughter

As a FB user, the only QAnon postings that I’ve seen — and it is very rare that they show up — have been posts from people commenting on news articles who include a QAnon meme in their post. So, from my perspective, it isn’t that FB is promoting QAnon, it’s that “real” people (they could be trolls, of course, including those on Putin’s payroll) are repeating those slanders. Articles from legitimate news sources — such as Washington Post — are posted on FB, and every member of the FB community can respond, even those who don’t subscribe to the news source.

I think that’s the point the article is making. The author was saying that they made sure they muted anything QAnon related, and yet still got some of it coming through on their newsfeed, and it was not due to the promotion of QAnon content by Facebook, or some shadowy state actor, it was actual real people in their friends and family circle, posting it because they actually believed it.
