We need to build in some sacrifice into these abilities. If you vote to desertification, you give up any chance to run for reelection if it fails. Make people truly believe it.

I don’t think they want to turn the Electoral College vote into a desert. /pedant

Hawley knows this effort will fail, just as every other effort to undo the results of the lawful presidential election will fail. (A brief reminder for those with faulty short-term memories: Joe Biden defeated Trump by more than 7 million popular votes and 74 Electoral College votes.) Every single attempt to prove that the election was marked by fraud or that President-elect Biden’s win is illegitimate—an effort that now includes about 60 lawsuits—has flopped. In fact, what we’ve discovered since the November 3 election is that it was ‘the most secure in American history,’ as election experts in Trump’s own administration have declared. But this immutable, eminently provable fact doesn’t deter Trump and many of his allies from trying to overturn the election; perversely, it seems to embolden them.”

“Republicans should be embarrassed by Mr. Trump’s Electoral College hustle. Mr. Trump is putting his loyal VP in a terrible spot, and what do Republicans think would happen if Mr. Pence pulled the trigger, Mr. Biden was denied 270 electoral votes, and the House chose Mr. Trump as President? Riots in the streets would be the least of it.”

“Mr. Pence is too much of a patriot to go along, but the scramble to overturn the will of the voters tarnishes Mr. Trump’s legacy and undermines any designs he has on running in 2024. Republicans who humor him will be giving Democrats license to do the same in the future, and then it might matter.”

Trump’s biggest accomplishment. Freeing the GOP from pretending to care.

On Fox News’ Hannity Wednesday evening, guest host Trey Gowdy pitched a real softball question at David Perdue.

What is his greatest achievement was in the six years of holding office?

Purdue couldn’t think of one thing he had done for the people of Georgia.

Gowdy said, “There is a service component to the job. What about your service as a United States Senator should voters who were trying to make up their minds in Georgia, what part of your service would you like to highlight for them?”

Perdue replied, “Well, that’s a tough question.”

No, David, it totally isn’t! Source: C&L

Trump WH is blocking Biden team from meeting w/OMB career officials to plan its first budget, a charge led by Russ Vought. Budget experts call this unprecedented & say it will delay Biden’s proposal & potentially congressional appropriation bills

This is again contributing to my fear of a coup: they are hiding expenditures of actions to undermine the election results and instead install Trump as a dictator in a second term.

There would be violence the like of which hasn’t been seen since the Civil War. Families have been torn apart now because of Trump — this will lead to the total collapse of our republic. There will be no recovery from this.

Thomas Massie’s attempts to persuade Republican legislatures to overturn the legitimate results of their state is a terrifying preview of what may be occurring on January 6. Of course, Nancy will hold firm in the House on which electors will be approved, assuming that some diabolical plot in the House doesn’t unseat her. But as I said yesterday, I have no faith in Pence doing what is right. And there are too many in the cult who have been confident for weeks that is the scenario that will play out.

Even if this coup fails, it is a stark reminder of terrifying flaws with the Electoral College and the determination of the winner of the Presidential election. The EC must be eliminated before it truly becomes too late to preserve our nation

The answer to the question is simple. The rise of technology has made it easy for people to isolate themselves in infobubbles where they don’t have to hear or read anything they don’t want to. This leads to mental stagnation, an onset of late-age stupidity, and a tendency to be an asshole to anyone who disagrees with you - since your brain is literally rejecting new information, as you’ve trained it to do.

It’ll be fine until the English sparrows show up.

I put up a hanging tray of golden safflower about a month ago and I’m getting chickadees, cardinals, house sparrows, nuthatches, goldfinches and one blue jay, but it’s also getting mobbed by the English sparrows, a bird so rotten that a MN DNR book about birding says to go ahead and kill them if you have too many.

If the birding book says kill them, that is NOT a quality bird.

It’s considered a non-native invasive species in the US. Apparently a long time ago some guy wanted America to have all of the birds listed in Shakespeare’s plays so he imported some English sparrows and starlings. Non-hilarity ensued.

From a NYT article about Trump’s stubborn refusal to address the pandemic.

WASHINGTON — It was a warm summer Wednesday, Election Day was looming and President Trump was even angrier than usual at the relentless focus on the coronavirus pandemic.

“You’re killing me! This whole thing is! We’ve got all the damn cases,” Mr. Trump yelled at Jared Kushner, his son-in-law and senior adviser, during a gathering of top aides in the Oval Office on Aug. 19. “I want to do what Mexico does. They don’t give you a test till you get to the emergency room and you’re vomiting.”

The Senator was notified that he came into close contact with someone on the campaign who tested positive for the virus.

Perdue and his wife tested negative but they are following the doctor’s recommendations in accordance with the CDC guidelines and will quarantine.

Yesterday, I put out a try of bird seed on my balcony and 3-4 chickedess came around. Today, some Stellar Jays (cousins of the Blue Jay) came calling, and I thought that they’d chase away the chickadees. But no, they seem to be taking turns. A couple of Jays will feast then go away. A short time later, the chickadees will be back. Avian sharing is a balm for my soul.

Hey, what you got there for me to eat?

Had this fella hanging out during a lunch stop near Cape Lookout while driving south along the Oregon Coast from Astoria. We weren’t giving him anything, but he did pretty well with the family picnic nearby.

Here in the east the chickadees and nuthatches are pretty fearless about going into feeders to grab a seed. Even when the jays (and sometimes cardinals) are trying to keep everything to themselves.

re: #75 stpaulbear

It’ll be fine until the English sparrows show up.

I put up a hanging tray of golden safflower about a month ago and I’m getting chickadees, cardinals, house sparrows, nuthatches, goldfinches and one blue jay, but it’s also getting mobbed by the English sparrows, a bird so rotten that a MN DNR book about birding says to go ahead and kill them if you have too many.

My feeder back when I had a house was just stocked with oil sunflower seeds. Which the sparrows pretty much ignored, but the others you list above like.

My current neighbor puts out a mix with a lot of millet in it. Which means the bird flock there is heavily English sparrows. Though recently a Carolina Wren has been hanging out with them as well.

Because the base of “conservatism” in this country is dying off, and the grifters (read: Republicans) who have catered to:
- whites fleeing dark skinned people in cities;
- evangelicals afraid of modernity (science);
- fundamentalist Christians afraid of any modernity (add women’s rights, teh ghey to above list);

… are finding that they need to identify more enemies to keep their grift going for their rich friends.

If the ordinary people of this country ever decide to not be bigots or religious fundamentalists, the Republican party as it is today will cease to exist.

So yes, the desperate Republicans are indeed desperate. For while the GOP has weaseled it’s way to a ruling majority, it is run by and useful for mostly just rich folk exploiting the ignorant and the fearful.

During the first lockdown, I learned to make the classic French brown sauce from scratch. Recently I scored some really good shortribs we can air fry. That inspired me to look up Demi-Glace sauce. Which is the classic brown sauce used to make a heavier version.

That looks perfect for the ribs and some mashed potatoes. Gently sauteed/steamed green beans, some Champagne and we are good to party.

The final part of the “Fare Well” trilogy of videos, part of Scotland’s online Hogmanay celebrations, has been released. I’d recommend you look at all 3 of the 5-minute videos, as they are quite something. Essentially the concept is that a couple of hundred drones with RGB LED lights are roaming around Scotland and forming magical pictures across the skies of Scotland. Please turn the audio on, as the music and the spoken word bits are integral to the experience.

The second is two instrumental versions of Auld Lang Syne with an introduction by Bob Thomas (born in Shetland, educated at Herriot’s School, founding Strumathon player of Silly Wizard) and his glass of Highland 12. Nine minutes. Hope all of you enjoy it and pass on the link.

I had been making adjustments for years trying to attract all of the good birds (I had over a dozen feeders in the yard), and he wrecked it in one day. I was gonna say, I must’ve been gone, because I generally agree with that assessment. I have an outdoor cat, but if I could bring her back indoors now that my other cats are gone, I would.

I allow Floof Cat some outside time due in part to her poor hunting ability.

Sort of got into allowing it in general after a few years of indoor only cats due to (a) Constant escape attempts, mainly by Tuxedo Cat; (b) allowing Chat Noir so outside time when his health was starting to fail because it seemed to perk him up; and (c) a spate of nice weather this spring where I could sit outside and keep an eye on them to make sure they did not wander to far.

Our outdoor cat, Moonshine, is an expert hunter. Our neighbor once commented that he noticed a precipitous drop in the vole population in his yard after we moved in. Otherwise, when we had our indoor cats, we would occasionally allow them a few minutes of carefully supervised outdoor time, but they never really took advantage of it. They were scaredy cats.

To be truthful, it is not in Pence’s best interest to allow this lawsuit to go forward. It puts the Office of the Vice President at the whims of the federal courts and the Congress, which is decidedly anti-Constitutional. Pence is probably privately pissed off at these idjits for filing this turd and making him do actual work to get rid of them.

How I came to know and appreciate Street Hurricanes
by “How did I manage to make it this far?”

Glen Campbell was Bacchus in 1974 when me and a few friends took the train out of Philly and went to New Orleans. We got there on Monday the week before Mardi Gras.
Slept in Tulane Stadium one night. Stayed at a transient hotel that was a palmetto bug and roach palace. Walked throughout the French and Spanish quarter. Went everywhere. Walked in and through every open door we could find.
Went into Pat O’Brien’s one night, that of the famous flaming fountains, before the crowds came.
Hung out with the biggest bouncer that I have ever seen to this day. Everything on him was a weapon. Had rings on every finger that were just as effective as brass knuckles.
Knives in every pocket and both boots. Had a cane that had a 2 pound chrome eagle on it.
Yep. The cane itself was a sheath for a blade. Custom made. Damascus steel.
Had to be 6’8”. Limped. Showed us his scars. From knives, machetes and gunshots.
He had zippers up and down his arms. The chains around his neck probably weighed 10 pounds. Would not want to be on the receiving end of him.
Then…
The hotel we could afford was being “repaired” and the guy I hooked up with to book that flop was the one friend of my friend I took the train with. We all got lost. Wound up finding each other later. Roll the drunks from the door and stairs to get in. Lost souls in the TV room staring at test patterns.
But we never saw palmetto bugs. Never heard about them. They were roaches to us. So he was down the hall and started screaming about “the fucking size of this fucking roach!”
I went and up on the crown molding under the ceiling there were two HUGE antenna over the edge.
He found a piece of furring strip, and knocked it down and killed it, but didn’t smash it.
We never saw a roach that big.
Then he picks it up by the antenna and walks down to the night desk and hammers the bell on the desk.
DING DING DING DING
The old woman, night shift, a drunk, and no teeth, and a wreck came out screaming “WHAT WHAT WHAT THE HELL..”
And with the most calm voice and straight face he says;
“I regret to inform you one of your patrons has passed away”.
“WHAT??!??”
“One of your guests has died.”
“OH MY GOD WHERE AND WHO AND..’
And he dropped that palmetto bug on her desk, and it was just under 5 inches long.
PLOP.
She chased him out into the street with an axe handle.
I was on the floor crying.
That is why we drank Street Hurricanes.

Never touched everclear. But my nemesis in High School was the bottle of Southern Comfort that would get passed around. Ew! Still can’t stand the taste of it. Even 151 was less dangerous…

Day after my 18th birthday (yep during those halcyon days of 18 year olds drinking legally) I went to this bar. The owner was sitting in his antique barber chair at the end of the bar carding everyone. I smiled & handed him my ID. He looks at it, looks at me, does a classic double take and throws it back at me. “You SOB” (he laughed, thankfully). I’d been a regular there for about 2 1/2 years at that point. Then take your college id card, put it on top of the shot glass like a lid, lift up the shot glass maintaining the “lid” on top and slam it on the table. It would foam up, and you drank the shot.

My mom would make them with Miracle Whip instead of mayo and called them “angeled eggs”. I liked them and didn’t realize they were unusual until I moved here and my mother-in-law made traditional deviled eggs. Then she started making her eggs with half mayo, half Miracle Whip, thinking I might like them better that way. No, mom, just… no. There is no need to create an abomination just to make me happy.

We had half a ham loaf leftover from last night. I baked up potatoes and warmed up some lima beans. Was an easy meal.

I’ve been chowing on the leftover ham from Christmas for a week. Making a ham and cheese quesadilla was what led to the death of the Corelle plate this afternoon.

We were a Miracle Whip household. I didn’t know it wasn’t mayo until I was an adult. Probably because we didn’t use it much outside of deviled eggs, potato salad and turkey sandwiches the day after Thanksgiving. Mom probably threw out more Miracle Whip than we ate. Now, the only thing I use mayo for is the occasional tuna salad in the summer, and I go back and forth between mayo and Miracle Whip depending on my mood or what’s on sale.

Yep! I have both Miracle Whip and mayo in this house, and sometimes I feel a craving for one or the other, usually when I’m doing sandwiches. Mrs. Fish doesn’t do deviled eggs very often, and tuna/potato salad never.

I hear the sound of gun fire most days in the late afternoon and evening.

Place I used to live was about a mile from an active quarry to the south and two miles from an active quarry to the north. Visitors would jump as the windows rattled, we’d wonder what spooked them.

The really loud bangs came from the weapons testing range a couple of miles to the west where they fired off 155mm artillery shell test charges on a Tuesday afternoon.

Purple Jesus…1 part Everclear and 1 part grape juice concentrate.
Before long you were either speaking in tongues or worshiping at the porcelain alter.

Pretty much a standard at fraternity parties was a punch made using Dailey’s brand concentrate (usually cherry flavored) and alcohol. Everclear usually in it to provide a kick. Usually mixed up 10-20 gallons at a time.

WTF cares? IT SUCKS AND SHOVE YOUR PONY BOTTLES.
Iron City beer sold for a premium in some places. Pittsburghs’ claim to fame.
Imp and Iron. Bad whiskey chased by a bad beer.
Or throw the shot, glass and all, into the mug of Iron and call it a “Boilermaker” in deference to the hard working men who have to drown themselves after surviving 10 hours on the blast floor.
And when you went to Wildwood NJ in the 60’s and early 70’s you could buy 3 quarts of IC for $1.25.

This kinda depends on the angle of up. If you shoot more or less straight up, it will use up all of that muzzle velocity and then come down under the force of gravity and pretty much top out at terminal velocity somewhere south of 200 miles per hour which is way lower than muzzle velocity. The lower the angle the more of the forward muzzle velocity it will retain

Alas, no. I was trying to wash a plate to put said consumable item on, it slipped, bounced off a pan in the sink, sailed up in the air, and crashed to the floor and exploded.

Here’s a more detailed story about the Moderna vaccine vials being deliberately left out. It is unclear what the motive was: is he a sicko playing with people’s lives? or is he an anti-vaxxer trying to throw a monkey wrench into the system? or something else?

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Authorities arrested a suburban Milwaukee pharmacist Thursday suspected of deliberately ruining hundreds of doses of coronavirus vaccine by removing them from refrigeration for two nights.

The arrest marks another setback in what has been a slower, messier start to vaccinate Americans than public health officials had expected. Leaders in Wisconsin and other states have been begging the Trump administration for more doses as health care workers and senior citizens line up for the lifesaving vaccine.

Police in Grafton, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) north of Milwaukee, said the Advocate Aurora Health pharmacist was arrested on suspicion of reckless endangerment, adulterating a prescription drug and criminal damage to property, all felonies. The pharmacist has been fired and police said in a news release that he was in jail. Police did not identify the pharmacist, saying he has not yet been formally charged.

His motive remains unclear. Police said that detectives believe he knew the spoiled doses would be useless and people who received them would mistakenly think they’d been vaccinated when they hadn’t.

Advocate Aurora Health Care Chief Medical Group Officer Jeff Bahr told reporters during a teleconference Thursday afternoon that the pharmacist deliberately removed 57 vials that held hundreds of doses of the Moderna vaccine from refrigeration at a Grafton medical center overnight on Dec. 24 into Dec. 25, returned them, then left them out again on the night of Dec. 25 into Saturday. The vials contained enough doses to inoculate 570 people.

A pharmacy technician discovered the vials outside the refrigerator on Saturday morning. Bahr said the pharmacist initially said that he had removed the vials to access other items in the refrigerator and had inadvertently failed to put them back.

The Moderna vaccine is viable for 12 hours outside refrigeration, so workers used the vaccine to inoculate 57 people before discarding the rest. Police said the discarded doses were worth between $8,000 and $11,000.

Bahr said health system officials grew more suspicious of the pharmacist as they reviewed the incident. After multiple interviews, the pharmacist acknowledged Wednesday that he removed the vaccine intentionally over the two nights, Bahr said.

That means that the doses people received Saturday are all but useless, he said. Moderna has told Aurora that there’s no safety concerns, but the hospital system is closely monitoring the people who received the spoiled doses, he said.

Bahr declined to comment on the pharmacist’s motive. He said the hospital system’s security protocols are sound.

“This was a situation involving a bad actor,” he said, “as opposed to a bad process.”

I like Corelle ware - lightweight glass is great for so many things.

But evidently not for whatever your purposes were.

Anyway, Corelle ware is not made by Corning anymore, but another company took over the product line, but with much fewer choices.

I have old (Corning) versions. I don’t know if the new stuff is made as well as the old stuff.

The same way Rolling Rock became a premium beer. Sell it far from home.

Heh. Leinenkugel’s at least tries to make some higher quality beers than their basic lager.

The one that gags me is how Pabst Blue Ribbon (a company without a brewery now, hiring kettle space whereever they can. Miller was making it) became “hip” Nasty old fashioned mass market pablum.

Now back when there was the big Pabst brewery in Milwaukee (I visited in 1982, in the nick as it were) they made a glorious beer called Andeker but that was a different world then.

Never got the taste for Miracle Whip. Only one in our family who loved it was dad. My sibling couldn’t stand either one. Rest of us were firmly in the mayo camp.

We always have both. Wife is Miracle Whip and I am mayo (Hellman’s usually). So what you get depends on who is making the tuna spread, chicken spread, etc.

re: #289 danarchy

This kinda depends on the angle of up. If you shoot more or less straight up, it will use up all of that muzzle velocity and then come down under the force of gravity and pretty much top out at terminal velocity somewhere south of 200 miles per hour which is way lower than muzzle velocity. The lower the angle the more of the forward muzzle velocity it will retain

Mythbusters did that trope and fucked it up. I’ve gone over the fatality reports from celebratory fire. They would have been right, but cows aren’t perfectly spherical.

One final word on Everclear. And this will kill you, you can look it up.
So that Canadian/Bass Ale drinker?
He also had an inside grow in his apartment outside of Buffalo. Hydroponics. Timed grow lights. Because he was a car hauler too and had to be on the road for days.
In 1978-79.
A grow room completely timed for grow lights.
Impressive.
And what he was doing with his crop was making hash oil. He was doing a RSO type operation in the fucking late 70’s in fucking Buffalo.
Do you know what agent he needed to break the compounds down? Want to guess?
Pure alcohol. Like Everclear.
You can look it up.

We’ve broken a few over the years, all in the same way. Dropping one from around 5’ onto a hard surface such as a hardwood floor or concrete will do it almost every time.

We lose about 1 per year that way—onto non-slip ceramic tile. Makes the nastiest shards.
