And they call themselves “patriots.”

The FBI has charged a woman involved in the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol after getting a tip from a former romantic partner stating the woman intended to take Nancy Pelosi’s computer and send it to Russia. There has been no indication the laptop has left the United States. Aired on 01/18/2021.

re: #366 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

The notion of “keystone creates well-paid jobs” is misleading at best.

Keystone shows up in a region, housing prices skyrocket, but nobody is about to build anything because they know that the project will be passing on. The towns/cities fill with workers who contribute little to the community.

So the workers earn well but wind up paying overheated prices for rent in order to live and work (temporarily) in that region.

Plus none of the oil from that project will stay in the USA anyway.

The whole conservative concept of “energy independence” is a lie. If oil is equated to energy independence, then conservatives would prohibit its sale to other countries.

Thank Nebraska protestors by the way for holding up this boondoggle long enough for Biden to get in and cancel the permit for it to cross the border.

Pelosi’s staff confirmed a laptop used for Powerpoint presentations was stolen. The laptop in question has no classified information. (That doesn’t matter for the purpose of an espionage trial.)

in the days following the attack — in which rioters ransacked the speaker’s office and ripped a name plate from above her door — Drew Hammill, Pelosi’s chief of staff, confirmed in a tweet that a laptop “only used for presentations” had been taken from a conference room in the speaker’s office.

Now are they going to throw the corrupted Census data out?

Embattled Census Bureau director Steven Dillingham resigns

Terri Ann Lowenthal, a former staff director of the House census oversight subcommittee, called Dillingham’s resignation a necessary step forward.

“It is incredibly important for Census Bureau staff, Congress, stakeholders, and the public to have full confidence that the Census Director can always put science ahead of partisan considerations,” she said. “I think that confidence has been shattered, and the director’s resignation will help the agency rebuild trust as it prepares to release the all-important from the 2020 Census.”

One for Teleskiguy:

Hopes high for return of skiing at abandoned Colorado resort (Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald, more at the link)

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — Dreams are inching closer to reality in a rural southern Colorado community, where a former ski resort sat abandoned until 2017.

That’s when Cuchara Mountain Park opened, following a grassroots effort that saw a local foundation acquire private property that was Panadaro Resort in the early 1980s. From U.S. 160, ski runs are still visible on the mountainside — reminders of an ill-fated operation that regularly swapped hands and was plagued by bankruptcy over the span of two decades.

Now the grounds are in the hands of Huerfano County. Sledding and cross-country skiing on a groomed loop have been popular this winter, overseers say, following a busy summer for Cuchara Mountain Park’s disc golf and mini golf courses.

And they say the chairlift at the former resort’s base is about ready for inspection. That official, state-run job is required before any skiers ride.

“As far as it being able to operate, I think they’re very close,” said Carl Young, county administrator.

They being Panadero Ski Corp., the nonprofit composed of locals with fundraising experience and also marketing experience at the ski resort that was.

Joe Biden’s favorite foods - pasta with red sauce, chicken pot pie, vanilla ice cream. Since Delaware is coastal, we’re going to have crab cakes (Dungeness because we’re in Kamala country), pasta, and ice cream for dessert.

I’ve got two live crab that my neighbor gave me this morning - going to boil them up now, re-steam what we’ll eat for dinner, then pick the rest so it’s ready to go into the crab cakes on Wednesday.

Ooops — just realized my downstairs post was in error. “Cows on Parade” probably provided the artist with a pre-cast cow and my girl friend had to decorate it, not create the sculpture itself. But my other friend would likely appreciate the opportunity.

re: #367 Hecuba’s daughter

I am biased because an artist friend does sculpture — not traditional style but he could certainly adapt; this would be preferable to his paying work as a bartender and Uber driver. Another friend constructed a cow for Chicago’s “Cows on Parade” over 20 years ago; maybe this is something that would attract her though her recent work is paintings.

State senator Slama was called out last year along with the Nebraska GOP for racist campaign flyers against her opponent Janet Palmtag (another Republican—Pete Ricketts had appointed Slama to her seat and supported her in the campaign against her Republican opponent).

Former Governors Kerrey (D) and Heinemann (R) condemned her. She didn’t care, nor did the GOP.

The condemnation, directed at the senator who was appointed to the Legislature by Republican Gov. Pete Ricketts in 2019, was based on Slama campaign flyers paid for by the Nebraska Republican Party. The flyers depicted photos of Palmtag and Sen. Ernie Chambers of Omaha along with text that stated: “Janet Palmtag sides with Lincoln liberals, atheists and radical extremists.”

Two more WaPo pieces I found interesting today.

The Trump presidency was marked by battles over truth itself. Those aren’t over.

“What’s unique about Donald Trump is that he took advantage of this widespread distrust of government and media to say everyone is lying to you except for me. We have never had a president so devoted to spreading disinformation and trying to overturn an election,” said Kathryn Olmsted, a historian at the University of California at Davis. “The people who stormed the Capitol are absolutely convinced that the election was stolen. They’re not being opportunistic; they really believe this. And all of the social science shows that if someone really believes a conspiracy theory, it is just about impossible to change their minds.”

As Trump’s presidency recedes into history, scholars seek to understand his reign — and what it says about American democracy

In many ways, Trump’s presidency was so aberrant — a real estate promoter and reality television star with no political or military experience winning the highest elected office with a minority share of the popular vote — that it is difficult to place him within the continuum of his peers, historians said.
Yet they also emphasized that Trump did not come out of nowhere — that his rise to political prominence behind a false birther conspiracy seeking to delegitimize his predecessor, President Barack Obama, is rooted in the Republican Party’s history of racial grievance politics and its leaders’ increasing willingness to embrace the far-right wing.
Likewise, they said, Trump’s use of new social media tools to spread disinformation was made possible by rapidly changing technologies, but the rhetoric he employed to radicalize his base is steeped in language of American demagogues — from Joseph McCarthy to Father Charles E. Coughlin to George Wallace.

According to New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman, the letter is the first step in a lawsuit over baseless claims Lindell and others in Trump’s orbit have made about the company.

“You have positioned yourself as a prominent leader of the ongoing misinformation campaign,” the letter said of Lindell’s claims that their voting systems stole the election for President-elect Joe Biden. Lindell, has spent the past several weeks with President Donald Trump filming videos citing “the biggest fraud is the Dominion machines.”

Trump obviously hates and fears dogs, but if he did have a dog, what would he name it?

My guess is it would be a large designer dog named “Champion”. It would only appear for photo ops, which would reveal that the dog wants nothing to do with 45.

Just realized that Jimmy Carter has outlived the Trump administration. Even if, heaven forbid, he dies today or tomorrow, the funeral won’t be until Biden is President and he can preside. I had been a little worried about what would happen if Jimmy’s time ran out while Cheeto was still squatting in the White House.

The way he’s going, he may outlive the Biden Administration as well.
I wonder if, when sending those congratulatory messages to centenarians, Jimmy ever expected he might be getting one himself…

Sure it can. But given it was in a conference room and not inside a secure facility, it won’t have classified material on it. Sensitive, yes, but not classified.

I’ve just been at a virtual concert as part of Celtic Connections, and I’m singing this tune after it. It was written by Ron Clark & Carl McDougall, but was famously performed by Hamish Imlach, which inspired a lot of people to cover it, which is probably where I heard it. This is certainly the case with Findlay Napier, who covered it tonight, but he did it before on his album “Glasgow”.

Cod Liver Oil and the Orange Juice- Findlay Napier

For reference, here’s Hamish Imlach performing the same song in the 1980s. There’s a bit of a blip at 1:20 where the line is supposed to be “Ah Mary, you’re one in a million” followed by the line “Oh-ho, so’s your chances”.

An American soldier in a combat zone apparently carries 7 loaded 30-round magazines for an M4/M16, and the guy with the LMG has 200 rounds in the belt.

The Latest: California urges halt to 300K vaccine doses (Casper, Wyo. Star-Tribune)

PHOENIX (AP) — LOS ANGELES — California’s state epidemiologist is urging a halt to more than 300,000 coronavirus vaccine doses by Moderna because some people who received it needed medical treatment for possible severe allergic reactions.

Dr. Erica S. Pan is recommending that vaccine providers stop using one lot of the Moderna vaccine pending completion of an investigation. She says less than 10 people who were inoculated at a single vaccination site needed medical attention.

But she also said serious reactions to vaccinations are extremely rare.

The virus has claimed more than 33,000 lives in California.

As a country we are nearing 10 million active infections. This would mean roughly 3 in 100 Americans currently has Covid. Next highest is France, with about 2.6 million, which is a slightly higher percentage rate of infection.

Also we have 15 million more total cases than the second highest country (India), this despite the fact India has a substantially larger population then that U.S.

Not to mention that few of them can make it through even basic training since the idea of “discipline” is alien to their way of living. The whole idea of there being something larger than them to work as team towards is beyond many of them.

Canada urges Biden not to cancel oil pipeline on first day (Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald)

Sorry (said with a Saskatchewan accent) Premier Jason Kenney, Nebraska doesn’t want your tar sands oil and will continue to fight against Alberta on this. You want it so bad, why don’t you build a pipeline to British Columbia (oh right, you lost that already).

TORONTO (AP) — Top officials in Canada want a chance to make the case for a long disputed oil pipeline to be built amid reports President-elect Joe Biden will cancel Keystone XL on his first day.

Alberta Premier Jason Kenney said Monday he will seek legal damages if reports are true that Biden plans to scrap the pipeline upon taking office. Biden’s plan is outlined in transition documents seen by Canadian media outlets.

“We hope President-elect Biden will show respect for Canada and will sit down and at the very least talk to us,” Kenney said.

Biden spokesman Andrew Bates said Monday the transition team had no comment on the pipeline.

I saw an article saying they were being hosted by EPIK yesterday. Now I’m seeing this Russia thing, so looking into it, what I can find on my own is this:

Their DNS is being hosted by EPIK.

EPIK is a Washington State provider that is notorious for hosting, and ignoring complaints about, “law breakers” for lack of a better term. Everything I’ve heard about them makes me completely flabbergasted as to why the FBI and/or DEA has not shut them down and seized everything already. This might be the straw the breaks the camels back on taking action on them.

The actual website address goes to DDOS-GUARD in Russia. I’m assuming this is a front end and the actual servers could be anywhere. Perhaps they are hosted by EPIK as well. If so they are in the US, and I wouldn’t be overly concerned about the Feds ability to monitor it.

re: #128 Eclectic Cyborg

They could build the pipeline along the route of existing Keystone pipelines (there are four).

The reason for this route over the Nebraska Sandhills is it cuts a couple hundred miles off the length, thereby saving construction money by slashing through the middle of sensitive environment and the Ogallala Aquifer which provides most of the water for everyone in Nebraska.

And Justin Trudeau concern trolling over our relationship with Canada hinging on this project can pack Sandhills sand as well, along with all the Canadian officials claiming Biden hates union jobs.

If they want it so bad, build it through your own damn country.

Ranchers and farmers who are in the way of the project have been deeding their land to Native American nations here, with natives leasing back for $1.

Ranchers and farmers in this state are really mad at Canada and our previous governor (he tried to circumvent the state constitution when the agency responsible for reviewing such projects ruled the pipeline would be a danger to everyone in the state).

They hated Governor Heineman (R) so much, they voted for another Republican who is doing everything he can to screw landowners and natives in the state.

So the new RWNJ talking point (promoted by Fox news of course) is:

“Hey, why does Biden need all this extra security around D.C. IF he won the election honestly?”

Stupid argument but 🤷🏽‍♀️. It’s exactly what you exist from Republicans. They’re just not all that bright.

I sincerely hope there’s a dude with a wheelbarrow of Lysol wipes entering the White House ahead of Biden and Harris.

No, this is actually what we need. The watercolor is by Ment Nelson, @mentnelson mentnelson.com. Nelson was tossed out of a press conference last year by Kanye West after West said that Harriet Tubman never freed anyone. Nelson did a watercolor sketch (never put up for sale, dammit, because I would have bought it) with Tubman dressed in a Union uniform holding a gun and leading Nelson out of that press conference.

Katie Porter is off the House Financial Services Committee. We’re all worse off for it. WaPo opinion piece

Has to do with some traditional House rules, so that serving on the financial services committee means you can’t serve on anything else. Time to deep six that rule!

I wonder what the logic of that rule is

I don’t like baseball. Just not my sport. But if I had an afternoon and a Tardis, I now know the one game I’d give anything to sit and watch.

The Greatest (Forgotten) Game Ever Played: MLB’s 1970 Exhibition to Honor MLK

More than 20 Hall of Famers suited up at Dodger Stadium on March 28, 1970 to honor the memory and support the causes of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Manager Joe DiMaggio chose Tom Seaver as his starting pitcher, with Bob Gibson first out of his bullpen in relief. On DiMaggio’s bench sat Lou Brock, Roberto Clemente and Al Kaline.

Roy Campanella, the opposing manager, filled the 2-3-4 spots in his batting order with Pete Rose, Hank Aaron and Reggie Jackson, his starting outfielders. Willie Mays flew 12,000 miles to take one at-bat off the bench.

Sandy Koufax, Don Drysdale, Stan Musial, Satchel Paige and Larry Doby all were there in uniform. Jackie Robinson watched from the stands, as did Hollywood stars such as Sammy Davis Jr. and Danny Kaye.

It may sound like a dream, but it actually happened. What did happen at Dodger Stadium on March 28, 1970, may have faded into obscurity, in part because the game was played on a Saturday afternoon, in an almost half-empty ballpark, with no local television coverage while an amalgam of 18 local networks televised the game to little fanfare around the rest of the country. But when measured by the historic talent in uniform that day, and the reason why they played a baseball game, it may have been The Greatest (Forgotten) Game Ever Played.

The Greatest (Forgotten) Game Ever Played: MLB’s 1970 Exhibition to Honor MLK

Even a non-baseball fool like me can recognize those names. Wow.

If so they are in the US, and I wouldn’t be overly concerned about the Feds ability to monitor it.

probably because the FBI finds it incredibly useful to allow them to operate, either because the provider has already been compromised, or because the FBI can make use of them even if they haven’t been compromised.

I would not be surprised to learn that India’s cases are drastically undercounted.

This seems relevant:

Effective January 26, the United States will require all travelers to the United States - including all U.S. citizens and including transit passenger — ages 2 and older to present a negative COVID-19 viral or antigen test result or evidence of having contracted and recovered from COVID-19 prior to boarding the plane. Test samples must be collected within the 3 calendar days before the flight departs.

France (and I would assume the EU as a whole) is not allowing non-essential travel into their territory right now.

I suspect that when international travel picks up again (hopefully by June/July), most nations are going to require vaccinations for entry.

Rudy Giuliani voted with an affidavit ballot, which he bashed in failed effort to overturn election

Giuliani, the former mayor of New York City, voted in Manhattan by an affidavit ballot, also known as a provisional ballot, after his name did not appear on the voter rolls when he showed up to vote.

According to records obtained by CNN’s KFile, Giuliani’s registration was moved to his Long Island home in August and his registration in New York City was purged in September. Giuliani told CNN he did not know why his registration was moved to his Long Island home in August and contested that he changed his registration at all.

Giuliani swore in an affidavit oath that he was registered to vote in the Manhattan district and cast his ballot there. A New York City Board of Elections official told CNN the vote would count, citing a provision in the state’s election law.

First there is a mountain, then there is no mountain, then there is.
First there is a mountain, then there is no mountain, then there is.
First there is a mountain, then there is no mountain, then there is.
First there is a mountain, then there is no mountain, then there is.
…I could sing that for twenty minutes straight…which is good and a bit necessary with the Allmans.

Quite possibly. No idea who he is. No real interest either.

Dirty Work is so good. I love singing it. Want my fave singer to sing it, but so far he hasn’t.

Keep driving people away from your religion. Christians are the best argument for atheism (well, that and reading the Bible).

Christianity has a white supremacist problem.

According to the affidavit, Betancur was able to get permission to leave his home state of Maryland to travel to Washington D.C. while on probation in order to distribute bibles with an organization called Gideon International. Betancur has previously been able to travel to the capital with the group.

Good job, Gideons.

You know, as someone who has a pretty limited career span, you’d think he would make wiser investments with his money during his earning years.

We have Republicans in charge here, so the vaccine rollout is predictably both fouled up and shrouded in secrecy.

The state Website to sign up for vaccines has been pushed back again (because corporations do everything better than government, conservative religion tells us so, and Gov. Ricketts insists this has to be a privately-run Website). Signups have been pushed off on the public health districts for now. Some public health districts (including mine) have created non-compatible with each other sign-up forms for when vaccines become available. They are not expected to be compatible with the state system (if that ever comes out).

Web-only signups are going to miss a lot of people in this state, especially the poor, homeless, and rural. Angie Ling (the state Health and Human Services incident commander) insists that the planning is phenomenal (her word, and narrator: she won’t share any details of the plans).

Nebraska is now sliding in vaccines distributed per capita (we were at 5th, we’re now at 10th, we’re expected to continue sliding). According to state figures, 0.99% of the state’s population sixteen and older have received both doses of the vaccine.

Several state organisations are looking forward to President Biden’s rollout of a national vaccination plan to speed this up.

It might be common knowledge, or a bit of forgotten lore, but the Mountain-No mountain-Mountain trope echoes a midcentury pop philosophy koan. The teacher describes a simple child that looks at a mountain and sees a mountain. He goes on to a confused adult sophisticate who sees fragments of geology, ecology, systems of pastoral economics. Finally the teacher shows the wise old man who looks and sees the integrated mountain. For all i know that might be on the liner notes.

I should be more reassured that the “Q rebellion” didn’t happen on “Q day”, but instead I’m just more worried that Biden, Harris AND Pelosi won’t be safe until after he has an American-born, confirmed person as the highest eligible Cabinet officer.

Am I paranoid or pragmatic?

Leahy will be President pro tempore of the Senate before any member of the Cabinet is confirmed. So he will be next in the line of succession.

Several years ago (2014?) I got a MIM Telecaster* for my first son thinking it would be fun to teach him and to jam together some day. I also got him a small Fender practice amp. He showed no interest. And so a couple of years later as we were still working ourselves out of credit card debt, I asked if he would give it to his musically inclined younger brother for Xmas. He did. But younger brother stuck with his $100 clarinet and wasn’t really interested. A couple of months ago I started hearing chords from the loft where older bro (19yo) lives (he was commuting to a local college until covid). Wow, he’s teaching himself and really doing well. I guess it took me not pushing him. Maybe we’ll jam together someday.

*I got my first MIM tele for $250 in Kentucky when we lived there. I felt bad because it was obviously a survival sale after the 2008 economic downturn. I got my son’s guitar for $300. I’ve heard that they are hard to find now. My holy grail is a MIJ. Let me know if you come across one.

Isn’t it wild how we are all discussing the line of succession should anything happen at the inauguration of a President? I put the blame squarely on Trump for this bullshit.
