And note that the rover has already driven a short distance from the touchdown point (as the camera pans, you can see the tracks from where the rover has already traversed).
UPDATE:
After further review, this is from Curiosity - you can faintly make out the name as the camera pans nearly the whole way around. Not deleting, but want to make it clear that this isn’t from Perseverance.
re: #3 lawhawk
As I noted downstairs, that’s likely not a Perseverance video. More likely from Curiosity. I do not believe Percy has moved yet, and those tire tracks go way to far for it not to be a different rover.

To me, the defining image of the Great Texas Freeze Of ‘21was the shot of the downtown business district (?Dallas?) lit up by skyscrapers with every single light blazing- surrounded by dark zones where the power had gone out in neighborhoods….

At the very end of the clip, there is a plate that appears to say Curiosity.
re: #5 FormerDirtDart 🍕🐀 No Capt’n😷Trips
I stand corrected then. And at 25 seconds you see Curiosity in the name of the rover in the body.
I’m updating above.
Adding to the excitement was a high-resolution image taken during the rover’s landing. While NASA’s Mars Curiosity rover sent back a stop-motion movie of its descent, Perseverance’s cameras are intended to capture video of its touchdown and this new still image was taken from that footage, which is still being relayed to Earth and processed.
Unlike with past rovers, the majority of Perseverance’s cameras capture images in color. After landing, two of the Hazard Cameras (Hazcams) captured views from the front and rear of the rover, showing one of its wheels in the Martian dirt. Perseverance got a close-up from NASA’s eye in the sky, as well: NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance. Orbiter, which used a special high-resolution camera to capture the spacecraft sailing into Jezero Crater, with its parachute trailing behind. The High Resolution Camera Experiment (HiRISE) camera did the same for Curiosity in 2012. JPL leads the orbiter’s mission, while the HiRISE instrument is led by the University of Arizona.
Several pyrotechnic charges are expected to fire later on Friday, releasing Perseverance’s mast (the “head” of the rover) from where it is fixed on the rover’s deck. The Navigation Cameras (Navcams), which are used for driving, share space on the mast with two science cameras: the zoomable Mastcam-Z and a laser instrument called SuperCam. The mast is scheduled to be raised Saturday, Feb. 20, after which the Navcams are expected to take panoramas of the rover’s deck and its surroundings.
In the days to come, engineers will pore over the rover’s system data, updating its software and beginning to test its various instruments. In the following weeks, Perseverance will test its robotic arm and take its first, short drive. It will be at least one or two months until Perseverance will find a flat location to drop off Ingenuity, the mini-helicopter attached to the rover’s belly, and even longer before it finally hits the road, beginning its science mission and searching for its first sample of Martian rock and sediment.

They’re not the same. Percy’s tires are slightly bigger around and narrower, a modification made from lessons learned by Curiosity.

Trump’s worried he’ll face lawsuits the rest of his miserable life.
Aww. Too bad, so sad.
The Houston Chronicle editorial board called on Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) to resign over his Cancun debacle in a blistering editorial on Friday. The home state newspaper described Cruz’s vacation during a Texas weather crisis as “foolish, callous and sadly telling of his approach to the job over the past eight years.”
“Texans’ anger with Ted Cruz right now could power an entire electrical grid,” the board said of the senator’s getaway this week to Mexico with his family as Texans suffered during freezing weather, power outages and water shortages. Cruz returned to Texas Thursday amid growing fury.
The editorial acknowledged that the Texas crisis was not of Cruz’s making and that the job of a U.S. senator is not to “shovel the coal.”
“The crisis is the handiwork of state officials, not federal,” the editorial said, but “we expect leadership and perhaps a little solidarity from a man whose re-election campaign heavily rested on claims of his compassion and advocacy for suffering Texans after Hurricane Harvey.”
@SenTedCruz I suggest you get hold of Congresswoman Cortez and volunteer the rest of your break with working with her on Disaster Relief.

Meanwhile, that idiot Clous, who brandished a gun during a recent Grand Traverse county board meeting that made national news, now goes off and puts a resolution to applaud one of Trump’s lapdogs, Retired General Jack Bergman (R-MI 1), who signed onto every stupid lawsuit to throw the election.

Federal judge blocks SC abortion ban 1 day after Gov. McMaster signed it into law
“How could you possibly square this legislation with Roe v. Wade?” Lewis asked Emory Smith, the attorney general’s deputy solicitor general.
Not only that, the judge told Smith South Carolina’s own existing state laws say a fetus is not viable outside the mother before six months.
“My God, we are talking about way before viability,” said Lewis, spreading her arms wide.
And here it is—
Smith told the judge “the law is in a state of flux. We have a different (U.S.) Supreme Court, your honor. It’s a different composition. … The law may be what it is right now, but it may be different in another year.”

Dark money group admits racketeering in Ohio bribery case
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A political dark money group that authorities say was used as part of a $60 million bribery scheme to pass nuclear bailout legislation in Ohio pleaded guilty to a federal racketeering charge on Friday.
Generation Now Inc. also agreed in federal court in Cincinnati to forfeit $1.5 million from two bank accounts.
Jeffrey Longstreth, a co-defendant in the case who previously pleaded guilty to racketeering for his involvement in the scheme, represented Generation Now during Friday’s hearing.
U.S. District Judge Timothy Black delayed a pre-sentence investigation and sentencing until after cases for all of the defendants are resolved.
Federal investigators say former Ohio House Speaker Larry Householder, Longstreth and three others used the nonprofit Generation Now as a conduit for $60 million secretly provided by Akron-based FirstEnergy Corp. The money was allegedly used to secure Householder’s power, elect allied lawmakers and gain legislative approval for $1 billion bailout of two nuclear power plants operated by a FirstEnergy subsidiary.
The five men were indicted in July on racketeering charges. Householder has pleaded not guilty and awaits trial. He was stripped of his leadership post but remains a state representative, rankling elected officials from his heavily Republican district who have pushed for his removal.

Growing up in a fundamentalist Christian sect, I can assure you Catholics are not regarded as “real Christians” by many and are more likely to be viewed as idol-worshippers- mainly “Mary-worship.”
The leadership of the Pope is also not recognized as anything more than idol-worship or a flawed interpretation of church authority. A Catholic President as a result is always viewed as suspect and not a straight-up “normal” Christian for a large percentage of American Christians.

Enhanced 911 service coming to Nebraska. We first got 911 service in this area in 2012.
All Nebraskans should be able to send texts, photos to 911 by end of 2022 (Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald)
By the end of 2022, Nebraskans who need to call 911 will also have the option to send text messages, photos and videos to emergency dispatchers.
Those 21st century communication options will be available once the state has transitioned to a Next Generation 911 system, which officials say will also provide faster, more reliable service.
States across the country have been upgrading to Next Generation 911, known as NG911, which connects to the internet rather than analog.
The new system will change the technology underpinning how callers are located. Rather than locating someone by using their distance to the nearest cell tower, as happens under the current system, the new one will locate someone using geospatial data — essentially the longitude and latitude information that lives inside your cellphone.
Of course for that technology to work, you need cell service, but that improves 911 service in towns.

That makes perfect sense. The Vatican has sponsored scientific research in many areas, including the biological sciences, and believes evolution is real, regardless of what you feel about their moral beliefs. (Gregor Mendel was a member of a Catholic order, the Augustinians, IIRC.)
The Big Bang theory of cosmic origins had its start with Georges Lemaître, a Catholic priest and professor of physics at Catholic University of Louvain (Belgium). He theorized it to explain the expansion seen in the universe, and it was observationally confirmed by Edwin Hubble. Then the Cosmic Microwave Background was discovered in 1964, which really confirmed what was being seen.
The Vatican also has a working astronomical observatory in southern Arizona as well.
re: #243 Yeah Sure WhatEVs
What does it say? It’s paywalled.
The article opening:
Late last year, as winter approached and power companies prepared for cold weather, Gov. Greg Abbott’s hand-picked utility regulators decided they no longer wanted to work with a nonprofit organization they had hired to monitor and help Texas enforce the state’s electric reliability standards.
The multi-year contract between the Public Utility Commission and the obscure monitoring organization, the Texas Reliability Entity, was trashed. Over the next months, right up until the crippling storm that plunged millions of Texans into the dark and cold, the state agency overseeing the power industry operated without an independent monitor to make sure energy companies followed state protocols, which include weatherization guidelines.
The Public Utility Commission’s decision in November to end its contract with the Texas Reliability Entity didn’t cause the historic grid failures that this week transformed Texas into an undeveloped country, leaving large swaths of the state without power or water as temperatures dropped and stayed below freezing. A PUC spokesman said the agency still had ample protections to ensure energy companies followed state rules and guidelines.

At least our streets are clear. Any place you walked through the yard are clear. Still no water, (we saved 15 gallons potable before it was shut off.) but we collected 10 gallons right off the roof today for flushing (We are now under California rules: If it’s yellow, let it mellow. If it’s brown, flush it down.)
In an absolute pinch, you still have about 30-40 gallons of good water in your water heater. To get it out, open a hot water faucet for air replacement, then find the bottom drain. Put a chunk of garden hose on it. GO SHUT OFF THE HEATER CIRCUIT BREAKER OR GAS SUPPLY SO YOU DON’T COOK AN EMPTY TANK WHEN POWER RETURNS.

Also, be careful of what comes out the bottom; an old water heater might have some rust and stuff down there. Once you get past that, it should be fine.

So, if I put a pizza on the rack in the oven, what’s the best way to get it out?
My solution for that is to put one of the 9”x9” cooling racks on the over rack and then put the pizza on that. So I can just take the small rack out with the pizza on it.
(Assuming you’re doing something like a frozen pizza.)
re: #269 Belafon
So, if I put a pizza on the rack in the oven, what’s the best way to get it out?
I have a pizza pan that I slide under it to remove it, otherwise for a frozen pizza, I have used a wooden spoon to slide it off the rack and onto the cardboard.

I regard the large majority of American Christians as simply Americans. That is their faith is centered around America, not God.
I pinch the pizza with my fingers just enough to hold it while I slide the cardboard blank under it.
re: #269 Belafon
So, if I put a pizza on the rack in the oven, what’s the best way to get it out?
1) Take rack out of oven;
2) Turn oven off;
3) Throw rack and pizza into snow to freeze;
3.5) Order Chinese. Read Fortune Cookies and add “in bed” after each.
4) Next morning, hammer pizza off of rack. If rack is damaged, put rack in recycling bin.

OK, so The Stand wasn’t bad. I get why many ppl have panned it, but most of its weaknesses come from the source material itself (let’s be frank, the book plot makes little sense). I found the casting to be quite OK, including Flagg.

If you don’t have a proper pizza shovel, I’d suggest using the widest spatula you have, and use it to lift the pie onto its cardboard (or anything wide, flat and heatproof).
I have a wooden salad utensil that flares out to about 5” across, and is perfect for all but the hugest pizzas.

There is little overlap in the audience for Parasite and the audience for Train to Busan. Parasite was a black comedy on social class structure in Korea; most of those who watched Parasite are not horror movie fans. And if you are watching a horror movie, you don’t want to be distracted by reading subtitles.

Remember Elizabeth Ann, the cloned black-footed ferret? Here’s Charlie Pierce’s take:
I liked Cloned Ferrets when they were opening for Television back in 1979. From the AP:
The slinky predator named Elizabeth Ann, born Dec. 10 and announced Thursday, is cute as a button. But watch out — unlike the domestic ferret foster mom who carried her into the world, she’s wild at heart. “You might have been handling a black-footed ferret kit and then they try to take your finger off the next day,” U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service black-footed ferret recovery coordinator Pete Gober said Thursday. “She’s holding her own.”
Elizabeth Ann was born and is being raised at a Fish and Wildlife Service black-footed ferret breeding facility in Fort Collins, Colorado. She’s a genetic copy of a ferret named Willa who died in 1988 and whose remains were frozen in the early days of DNA technology. When they reformed a few years later as Undead Ferrets, I thought their acoustic stuff was interesting, but lacked a certain fire.

Reid said “we got some warm water and freed him up,” before ending the post with #railway #notalynx #bobcat #trailbc and #kootenaylife.
Asked in the Facebook post if the bobcat tried to bite while being rescued, Reid replied it “wasn’t happy, that’s for sure. Was protecting his duck.”

We were driving slow in our neighborhood when I saw a bobcat stalking a gopher in a field. I had the window down and I pointed it out to my wife.
The gopher saw me pointing and then saw the bobcat, (who was the exact color of the surrounding dry grass) and ducked in a hole.
The bobcat gave me a “nice going, asshole” kind of look and skulked off in search of less observant prey
