Of course they are. Scumbags. Suboxone is another problem we’re going to have to address in this too. I am seeing signs pop up here in my little part of metro suburbia for clinics offering suboxone treatment. That helped kill my BIL, it was only used to keep him off the oxy and he was never weaned away or given help from a mental health standpoint. We’re doing this all wrong in America.

Fuck the Sacklers.

The wealthy and powerful who consider themselves above the law and have heretofore escaped the justice system must finally get their day in court and be subjected to the criminal liabilities they richly deserve. The Sacklers, the Trumps, the Mercer family, the deVos family and so many others must not continue to get away with their crimes while those who lack the wealth to defend themselves are subject to much harsher punishment for lesser infractions. Let Bill Barr, Louis deJoy, Roger Stone, Paul Manafort, Steve Bannon, Devin Nunes, Rand Paul. Lindsey Graham, et. al. also face our justice system.

Under fire for differences in amenities for its men’s and women’s basketball tournaments, the NCAA revealed an upgraded weight room Saturday for players participating in the women’s college basketball tournament in San Antonio.

What had been a single small rack of dumbbells has now been replaced with a larger space with more equipment, including a variety of bars, racks and stands.

The facilities were upgraded overnight after the organization was widely criticized by players, coaches and fans alike.

Other things have been brought up, such as the quality of food fed to men and women players, and the quality of Covid-19 tests (men get PCR, women get the less accurate antigen test).

Under Fire, The NCAA Apologizes And Unveils New Weight Room For Women’s Tournament

Responding to the controversy Friday, NCAA Vice President of Women’s Basketball Lynn Holzman acknowledged in a press briefing that the organization “fell short.” She added the NCAA had originally intended for women’s players to have access to a full weight room once their team had reached the third round of the tournament. The men’s teams had access to a full weight room during the entirety of their tournament run.

The controversy picked up steam as more disparities were revealed: uninspiring box meals compared to a buffet with steak filets and lobster mac & cheese; swag bags appearing to be a third the size of the men’s.

Perhaps most eye-opening, Connecticut coach Geno Auriemma told reporters Friday that the school’s men’s team were being tested daily with highly accurate PCR COVID-19 tests, while his women’s team were receiving antigen tests, which are less accurate. The NCAA later confirmed that the two tournaments are using different testing methods.

It’s sort of a viscious circle. The NCAA doesn’t promote women’s sports as heavily as it does men’s sports, treats women poorly compared to men, and sports fans watch men’s sports more.

We also saw that with women’s professional soccer: The USA women’s team is objectively better, but is not treated as well.

What is President Biden supposed to do? Shoot migrants? Unleash dogs on them? Throw children in cages?

The most he can do is take them in, process their asylum claims, deport those who aren’t eligible for asylum and treat them humanely. Immigration has been an issue since the 1980s so it’s not a Biden problem.

How can he get any of this done? It’s going to have to be through EO. The GOP will march in lockstep to obstruct everything. Even those who did the right thing and voted to impeach/convict Trump are Republicans first and have consistently shown that they are not ready to do the right thing when it comes to legislation. Yes, some voted correctly on most appointments and Collins saved Xavier Becerra by being the only Republican to vote for him; indeed she has voted so far in favor of every Biden nominee. But when it comes to legislation, she has been reluctant to buck the GOP leadership.

(also, I seem to remember during the Rodney King riots, Korean-owned businesses were special targets of the rioters. Hence all the video of Koreans on their roofs, with guns, protecting their premises. Probably to do with Latasha Harlins.

On November 15, 1991, Los Angeles trial judge Joyce Karlin overturned a jury’s recommendation that Mrs. Du be convicted of voluntary manslaughter and sentenced up to sixteen years in prison, and instead sentenced her only to five years probation

I lived thru that whole mess here in Koreatown where EVERY business with Korean characters displayed were torched. National Guard troops were stationed at every corner. I gave them a thermos of coffee every night. because they were right in front of our apartment building.

Considering what we’ve seen so far, the answer must be “telling Americans that the government can help them rise out of poverty and destitution without guilt-tripping them for it like Holy Mother Church.”

Short version: I have persistent hiccups in the wake of a surgery. More details are behind the jump, but if any of you have had experience with this, I would love to hear how you worked it out.

Thank you all so much!

I had some colon surgery (they found a non-cancerous polyp that they couldn’t get rid of during a colonoscopy) a week ago yesterday, and I got home from the hospital on Monday afternoon. Recovery has gone as expected, but since early Tuesday morning (about 3 am) I have developed chronic off and on hiccups. At first, they were violent and led to some intense vomiting over the course of a day, but that has passed, and the power of the hiccups has declined somewhat, but it’s enough to wreak havoc. It’s very hard to carry on a conversation, sleep, eat sometimes.

Home remedies haven’t worked - holding breath, breathing into a bag, though a tablespoon of pure sugar did help for awhile.

First As Tragedy, Then As Farce  Mar 20, 2021 • 10:11:12pm

re: #2 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷

A few years ago I broke the shit out of my ankle and tore up some ligaments, too. The pain was impressive, but I was never asked how much pain I could handle. I’m no tuff-guy, but I think that’s kind of important. I was given prescriptions for hydrocodone and tramadol. I was scared to take the hydrocodone because I KNOW HOW I AM when it comes to abusable substances. All told, I legitimately needed about 4 tramadol throughout the whole affair. I was prescribed 30.

Now I certainly don’t think people with chronic conditions should be expected to just live with pain, but in cases like mine, short-term injuries and the like, why should people expect to have zero pain? I’ve heard of people being prescribed oxycontin for a sprained wrist. That seems insane to me.

I cannot recall or find the name of the Catholic Supreme Court Justice who ruled in favor of Roe vs Wade but I remember our Catholic priest calling for his excommunication from the pulpit.

Here in San Diego the numbers are almost down to the summer levels. How long it will take to go lower I don’t know, but with people now more careless the numbers may go up.

18.2% of the county is full vaccinated, around 29% total vaccinated (meaning a lot of people are waiting for their second dose in the next week or so.)

Don’t know when I will be able to be vaccinated. I suspect next month.

Hey! I haven’t seen you around in a while. Welcome home! Did you know you have 6,556 LGF Karma Points? You should try playing those in a Pick-4 style lotto and see if you can win with that number.

re: #43 Hecuba’s daughter

Doing ok, but am apprehensive that the Illinois progress on new cases has stalled.

I hope things improve on that front.

Here in the Nebraska Panhandle, things are far better than the worst week (November 8). The positivity rate continues to drop as well (now 14%), and three counties have had no cases in two weeks (Banner, Sioux, and Garden—Garden is probably the most conservative of all twelve counties in PPHD, but has been very strict on enforcing mask orders).

The percentage of people vaccinated is nearing 20% (PPHD only shows fully vaccinated on their site; one of two jabs doesn’t count). Vaccines started late here, mostly because of the availability of the Moderna vaccine was so scant (we cannot store the Pfizer vaccine here). The elderly and agricultural workers are high on the priority list here, but if there are no vaccines, no one gets then. The addition of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine to the mix should help us out tremendously.

I feel somewhat guilty that I’ve been fully vaccinated for a while now, whist at the same time watching others struggle to get a vaccine at all (including my wife). Perhaps that is related to the “survivor’s guilt” phenomenon.

[searching … yes, there is an article about this]

How to Manage Pandemic Guilt (Psychology Today, April 23, 2020)

Having good fortune when others don’t may lead to feeling guilty, and even ashamed.

What do we do with this guilt? How do we understand it? Should we soothe our guilt? Or do we deserve punishment? Is there something transformational to do with our guilt?

re: #77 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

I cannot recall or find the name of the Catholic Supreme Court Justice who ruled in favor of Roe vs Wade but I remember our Catholic priest calling for his excommunication from the pulpit.

I was only a teenager but that also made me wonder why those guys were exempt from taxation. Another German friend tells me she quit the Catholic church in the 1980’s when they came out and said that no German Catholic could vote in good conscience for the Green Party.

Justice William J. Brennan, Jr.

He was appointed to the court by President Eisenhower with a recess appointment during his reëlection campaign, with the idea he would help gain the Roman Catholic vote whilst serving as a conservative justice. Eisenhower put him through regular confirmation hearings after the election.

Prior to Brennan, only six Catholics had served on the bench, including the author of the Dred Scott decision, Roger Taney. Brennan’s decision was compared to Dred Scott by Catholics all over the country at the time, including demands for his excommunication (churches have been ignoring the Establishment Clause in this country for a long time).

Justice Brennan during his confirmation hearing in the Senate was subjected to the “dual loyalties” question (is he loyal to the Pope over the Constitution). His response at the time:

“Senator, I think the oath that I took is the same one that you and all of the Congress, every member of the executive department up and down all levels of government take to support the Constitution and laws of the United States. I took that oath just as unreservedly as I know you did, and every member and everyone else of our faith in whatever office elected or appointive he may hold. And I say not that I recognize that there is any obligation superior to that, rather that there isn’t any obligation of our faith superior to that. And my answer to the question is categorically that in everything I have ever done, in every office I have held in my life or that I shall ever do in the future, what shall control me is the oath that I took to support the Constitution and laws of the United States and so act upon the cases that come before me for decision that it is that oath and that alone which governs … “

He introduces his guest by saying that if ex-acting administrator for Medicare/Medicaid (during Obama admin) Andy Slavitt “had skimmed 1/1000 of their budget, he’d be a billionaire. Sen. James Lankford of Oklahoma has drawn a primary challenger, more Jesus-y and traitorous than Lankford himself.

Jackson Lahmeyer, pastor at the Sheridan Christian Center in Tulsa, has said he plans to take on Lankford, and he held a news conference and rally in Jenks last week; both were attended by retired U.S. Army Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, a national security advisor for former President Donald Trump who pleaded guilty to criminal charges, later dropped, of lying to the FBI.

“Our faith, our freedoms and our families are under a direct attack right now in this country,” Lahmeyer claimed at the news conference, citing “radical leftism.”

He hits the right conservative pleasure button in the conservative Skinner box.

In yesterday’s two US House special elections:

LA-5: Julia Letlow (R) won outright to replace her husband (who was elected in 2020 but died from Covid-19 before he could take his seat).

LA-2: State Senators Troy Carter and Karen Carter Peterson (both Democrats, no relation) advance to the runoff election. Cedric Richmond endorsed Troy Carter, while EMILY’s List and Stacy Abrams endorsed Karen Peterson.

So if you live in LA-2, you have one more election to attend, the runoff on April 24.

LOLOLOL

Monica Levinson, producer of Borat: Subsequent Moviefilm, said the film’s infamous Rudy Giuliani scene was even more harrowing for the filmmakers after the former mayor left the hotel room.

The film features a scene in which Giuliani goes to the hotel bedroom with Maria Bakalova after an interview, appearing to expect sexual relations. Giuliani has denied that’s what he was doing.

“He claimed we were trying to extort him at the time, which we didn’t ask for anything,” Levinson said at a Producers Guild of America panel on Saturday. “He called all of his New York City cops and said extortion, which was a federal crime. Very smart to bring that up.”

Parking while poor? Complex says it tows cars for being unsightly (WKRC, Cincinnati)

Ohio law allows this, as long as your policies are clearly posted on your private property.

WESTWOOD, Ohio (WKRC) - You’ve heard of DWI: driving while intoxicated. But how about PWP: parking while poor?

One local apartment complex has stringent regulations for its residents and visitors that are giving some people pause.

Dennis Day’s 2001 Honda is no Bentley, but he was surprised when the other day he received a notice on his windshield after visiting a friend at a Westwood apartment complex.

“Basically, I just ran into the apartment to drop off a few boxes, came back out with a sticker on my car saying that my car did not meet their high standards,” Day said.

The notice stated that due to damage on his car, it would be towed if he didn’t move it within 24 hours.

“It was a huge slap in the face!” exclaimed Day.

Management at Montana Valley Apartments wouldn’t go on camera but said cars on their property can’t have rust, dents, flat tires or bad paint. When asked, “What do you say to people who can’t afford a nice car or can’t afford to get their car fixed?”

She answered, “We understand the policy is not for everyone.”

This reminds me of Questions 27 and 28, asked of Japanese Americans when they were incarcerated in the camps in WWII:

Question number 27 asked if Nisei men were willing to serve on combat duty wherever ordered and asked everyone else if they would be willing to serve in other ways, such as serving in the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps. Question number 28 asked if individuals would swear unqualified allegiance to the United States and forswear any form of allegiance to the Emperor of Japan

As a Chinese American, you can stuff that request up where the sun don’t shine.

For a political party whose membership skews older, it might be surprising that the spirit that most animates Republican politics today is best described with a phrase from the world of video games: “‘Owning the libs,’” Politico reports.

“Gamers borrowed the term from the nascent world of 1990s computer hacking, using it to describe their conquered opponents: ‘owned.’ To ‘own the libs’ does not require victory so much as a commitment to infuriating, flummoxing or otherwise distressing liberals with one’s awesomely uncompromising conservatism. And its pop-cultural roots and clipped snarkiness are perfectly aligned with a party that sees pouring fuel on the culture wars’ fire as its best shot at surviving an era of Democratic control.”

Best rando (Irish93) response

“The article misses an important point, though: the GQP isn’t actually “owning the libs”; it’s claiming to own the libs. Because as far as I can tell, no one—not liberals, or centrists, or nonideological casual observers, or anyone outside of the tinfoil-hat bubble—gives a crap about their ugly babbling. They’re just a bunch of vicious, unaccomplished, frustrated people screaming to each other in an echo chamber.”

The response sadly misses the very important group that does absolutely care: the media. Because it allows them to continue to launder the idea that the GOP is the natural default for governance and success, and that Dems are forever usurpers to that natural rule.

Overreach is their core competency. I could see Roberts or Gorsuch joining the liberal justices on a full revocation of Roe. Barrett and Kavanaugh and Thomas are guaranteed to flip Roe.

And Alito would vote with Thomas. So both Gorsuch and Roberts would have to do the right thing.

re: #117 A Mom Anon

As other lizards have noted, you get good drugs during the procedure so there is minimal trauma in that respect (for my last one about 6 months ago, they used propofol).

The trauma is the prep. Lots of putting nasty fluids in the top end and getting lots of action at the bottom end ;-)

Having said that, detecting colon cancer early is critical and important. And while the prep is no fun, compared to listening to Trump for 5 minutes it’s a breeze…

It’s also a hoot being told they had to insert some air to straighten the colon while inserting the colonoscope and they won’t release you until you’ve farted enough.

Seriously, the prep is unpleasant but you will be out during the procedure and so minimal trauma. Minimal discomfort after.

My biggest trauma was the doctors reaction to my question:

If they use an endoscope to inspect the throat down to the stomach, shouldn’t the device for a colonoscopy be called the other-end-oscope?
