Lyrics
Well I looked into a house I once lived in
Around the time I first went on my own
When the roads were as many as
The places I had dreamed of
And my friends and I were one
Now the distance is done and the search has begun
I’ve come to see where my beginnings have gone

Oh the walls and the windows were still standing
And the music could be heard at the door
Where the people who kindly endured my odd questions
Asked if I came very far
And when my silence replied they took me inside
Where their children sat playing on the floor

Well we spoke of the changes
That would find us farther on
And it left me so warm and so high
But as I stepped back outside
To the grey morning sun
I heard that highway whisper and sigh
Are you ready to fly
And I looked into the faces all passing by
It’s an ocean that will never be filled
And the house that grows older and finally crumbles
That even love cannot rebuild
It’s a hotel at best, you’re here as a guest
You ought to make yourself at home
While you’re waiting for the rest

Well I looked into dream of the millions
That one day the search will be through
Now here I stand at the edge of
My embattled illusions
Looking into you

The great song traveler passed through here
And he opened my eyes to the view
And I was among those who called him a prophet
And I asked him what was true
Until the distance had shown
How the road remains alone
Now I’m looking in my life
For a truth that is my own

Well I looked into the sky for my anthem
And the words and the music came through
But words and music will never touch
The beauty that I’ve seen
Looking into you and that’s true

A black woman in Indianapolis received two houses appraisals that were nearly half the amount her white male friend received for the same house:

Well, I was thinking that because this was Texas, the prevailing notion of “good guy with a gun” would be more likely to be an armed protestor forcibly threatening the would-be patient away from the “murder mill” at gunpoint.

I do quite a bit of walking around on election days. To and from my house and the local supermarket. Also I make quick dashes out to the front of the building for lists of the streets in each division (we have five divisions that vote in this building). I am not inactive on election days.

Just for curiosity’s sake, can anyone explain to me how FedEx Ground shipping actually works? I’m watching the tracking for an item I have to sign for. In the first 40 hours or so after pickup, the item traveled just over 1000 miles. At this moment (according to the last tracking update), the item is approximately 40 miles away from me. According to the estimated time of delivery, that final 40 miles is going to take another 3 days (counting today). I’m not complaining, just baffled.

edit: math

re: #55 First As Tragedy, Then As Farce

It ultimately boils down to where the distribution centers are. UPS sometimes has crazy processes to. For example, if I want to send something to the next state, it would get sent to Atlanta for processing and then back westward to where it’s actually supposed to go.

Logistics can be weird sometimes.

Wait — this is all tied to the 2024 GOP nomination.

Hawley had gained an edge on Cruz by being the Senator who made the January 6 insurrection possible; Cruz was doing catch-up there. This is the Cruz effort to gain support among evangelicals and Bibi supporters by being the first on the Israel scene to instigate more hostilities. The Cruz effort at the border turned out to be a flop that inspired much mockery. Here he is placing himself — and Israelis — in real danger to demonstrate his courage.

He thinks he should be a dog and relishes their company. Ginger Boy is the scaredy-cat. He loves Ollie and hopes that some of that tough kitty will rub off. He’s the youngest, he knows Toby is old. :-) One of my favorite memories. My dad was a horrible cook, but we didn’t know that as kids. I just assumed bacon was supposed to be cinderish sticks of carbon and that eggs were supposed to be cooked until the yolk had denatured into resin. We loved it! He also made coffee so strong that it could have powered a spice guildsman.

re: #100 A Mom Anon

My husband has type 2 diabetes that has become insulin dependent. Even with insurance we can’t afford the pens, so he’s had to go to syringes and insulin in vials. He’s got bruises all over his stomach from it, but he does not have any other options. How is it right to charge over half of what a disabled person gets each month for one medication? I cry all the time over this. It’s fucking wrong. Both of us have worked hard our whole lives. How is this acceptable?

It’s acceptable because enough white people let their racism TRUMP everything else.

LBJ’s truth about white racists is just as accurate now as when he said this in 1967 to Bill Moyers!

Dude is going through the same thing. The insurance we had when he was working covered a significant amount of his insulin cost. Now were struggling to pay for it.

I see why desperate people ration insulin or buy pet insulin to try to survive. It’s criminal.

Insulin costs appear to vary by hugh amounts in the US. My wife is insulin dependent and takes both a long term (twice daily) and short term (after meals) doses.

We use flex pens for both.

The long term insulin is Levemir and each refill is for five 100 ml pens and costs us a total of $48.01 ( the refill is for 5 pens for a cost of $9.60 for each pen).

The short term insulin is generic NovoLOG and each refill is for four 100 ml pens and costs us a total of $44.06 ( the refill is for four pens for a total cost of $11.01 for each pen).

I fully understand that even these costs are difficult for many, but for us they seem reasonable. IIRC, several years ago, we were paying in the vicinity $50 per 100 ml vial for these same insulins.

I imagine the difference in costs is insurance. My wife and I are both covered by Medicare and do not have Part D coverage for medications. I also carried my Federal BC/BS into my retirement as my supplemental health insurance policy. It’s not cheap, but well worth it for the coverage we’ve used over the past couple of year.

Also, the cost difference may be just a matter of what the pharmacy is willing to charge for various medications. FYI - we use our Fred Meyers (Kroeger) pharmacy.

My husband is supposed to be taking the same insulin regimen that your wife is. With insurance, a package of 5 pens is almost 125 per pen. The vials cost 50. What costs money is the pen. The insulin itself is more reasonably priced. It’s fucked up. When he was working we had a lot better insurance. What we have now from healthcare dot gov is not great. Because our fucking governor won’t expand Medicaid or except more money from the federal government. He will be eligible for Medicare in July because of his disability. It’s because the prick who wrote the Pill Bill put a provision in it FORBIDDING Medicare from bargaining with drug companies for lower prices.

But the VA has that ability.

Medicare needs to have that provision repealed.

Latest example—Pradaxa was costing me $120 for a 90 day supply. I just got it refilled and Kaiser was able to lower the cost for a 90 day supply to $80. Hopefully Joe can unfuck what Trump did and restore lower copays and deductibles.

People: i expect my doctor to know me but my robot doctor had better not know me.

Patients may be less inclined to heed artificial intelligence (AI) doctors that know their names and medical history, according to researchers at Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) and the University of California, Santa Barbara. The team designed five AI chatbots; Penn State’s Jin Chen said the bots were programmed to ask questions about COVID-19 symptoms and behaviors, and to offer diagnosis and recommendations. Study participants were more likely to consider a chatbot intrusive and less likely to follow its medical advice when it used their first name and referred to their medical history, yet they expected human doctors to distinguish them from other patients, and were less likely to comply when a clinician did not recall their information. Penn State’s S. Shyam Sundar said, “When an AI system recognizes a person’s uniqueness, it comes across as intrusive, echoing larger concerns with AI in society.”
