From ‘Just One Voice’ - Available April 2022

Michelle Willis - I wrote “Liberty” on my last trip to New York before I moved there. I was questioning how much my need of change was just green grass chasing. I was falling more and more in love with the city, seeing myself there, while still carrying memory, grudges and hopes deferred from home. I was thinking about all the people for whom the Statue of Liberty was a beacon of hope, new life, new chances, but upon getting here their lives were far from the dream, and yet I couldn’t help but fall for the energy of the city (edit: five years on, I’m still very much in love with NYC). The vocal harmonies here may as well have been taken from a Michael McDonald background vocal arranging class. I’m certain that subconsciously I was writing with his voice and style in mind. In the outro it’s both him and my mentor and friend David Crosby singing “a city takes me by storm”, which is a beautiful beckoning to me of all that was to come. I had no idea I was about to begin a career writing and touring with Croz.

LYRICS
It’s a good thing, me being here
Wading, finding on my own
‘Cause you can make yourself anew anywhere
Then you find you’re the one you can’t let go

And I don’t wanna be that girl
Go where you think I should
See the things you’ve seen,
Live within your dream
Baby I’d have left if it weren’t so good

Like liberty’s beacon in the distance
It could be a false omen after all
Promises of future kings
A space to try again
Finding yourself in her call

‘Cause I don’t wanna change like them
Try to be tough like them
Try to pretend I’ve seen it all
And I’ll see it all again

‘Cause it’s hot as hell and smells like shit in here
I just turn off and wait to arrive (let the rush pass me by)
And it will take the magic from it
Till you see another soul dancing through hollowed eyes

Come over here, plenty of action
You’ll shine like gold when you’re new
The game that you love, your tried and true
Starting to move too fast for you

And every time I’ve held another
I see you

Like liberty’s beacon in the distance
It could be a false omen after all
I think that I’ll let it be
Until I can’t refute it
And that’s just the way it’s gonna be for now

A city takes me by storm, I want everyone and all their warmth

Ah. A new excuse.

President Vladimir Putin says that what he calls the special military operation in Ukraine was necessary because the United States was using Ukraine to threaten Russia and Russia had to defend against the “genocide” of Russian-speaking people by Ukraine.

By getting Trump back in office as President. That would definitely accomplish the end of our nation as anything but subservient to Putin.

James Whitney Hill, 67, was killed by Russian artillery fire in Ukraine this week, at least the second American to die there since the invasion began Feb. 24. Before his death, he touched lives around the world through teaching and storytelling, friends and family told USA TODAY.

“He had worked tirelessly to find her treatment and refused to leave her bedside when the invasion began in Ukraine,” his family said in a statement Friday about his life partner, Irina Teslenko, who has multiple sclerosis.

Hill and Teslenko drove the four hours from Khorol to Chernihiv in northeastern Ukraine days before the invasion. There, Hill documented the deteoriating situation in a series of Facebook posts.

Hill died Thursday when he ventured outside the hospital to find food for patients, nurses and neighbors, as well as to find a way to communicate with loved ones abroad, family said.

Jimmy Hill, American killed in Ukraine, was ‘true to his love’ and stayed with sick partner (USA Today via MSN)

It’s not really true that the NYT has no vision. Its vision is the “white moderate” vision so famously called out by MLK, and updated only slightly since then.

Among other things, it privileges being polite to Republican dirtbags over analysis of why Republican dirtbags really are dirtbags.

Brian Houston, leader of the Hillsong church conglomerate, is in more hot water. Currently he’s facing charges of concealing sexual abuse, specifically that of his father, Frank Houston, who sexually assaulted a number of boys. His trial is sometime this year but I can’t be arsed to find out when.

Hillsong Church founder Brian Houston breached code of conduct with inappropriate behaviour towards two women, leaked letter says

Allegedly no sex involved, but prescription drug and alcohol abuse, that’d be a yes.

abc.net.au

And if you think these are the only two people who were so treated, I rather doubt that is the case. When the “pastor” is the close confidant of the current Aussie PM, Scott Morrison, when he’s infamous in his own country, when his church conglomerate provides music for thousands of churches around the world, it’s entirely likely there are additional people who have not come forward.

What I suspect may have pushed Hillsong into making this disclosure now is that the 3-part Discovery Plus Hillsong documentary is dropping on Thursday, March 24. Maybe they’re trying to get ahead of some bad news.

Branson comedian Yakov Smirnoff will hold a benefit comedy show this Saturday in Springfield to raise money for Ukrainian refugees.

Although he’s known as being from Russia, Smirnoff is actually from Odesa, Ukraine.

He came to the U.S. in the 1970s.

Smirnoff says he would like to see the U.S. do more to help the Ukrainian refugees.

You should write a book about your experiences in confronting religious cons, crimes and other bullshit done in the name of Jesus. I never cease to be freaked out that so many people continually follow awful humans into doing awful things in the name of God/Jesus/Your Religion and we don’t learn from all the times it’s happened in the past.

For those interested, a toroidal centipede is a series of interconnected people with their noses up each other peoples butts in a doughnut that never ends.

It was popularized by my old friend Bruce Sterling.

It can be a simple loop, or an infinity shaped loop.

I will never forget the first time I saw him, standing by the front door of Jimmy Day’s bar in Greenwich Village where I waited tables. The sun behind him made him appear almost godly. It was 1977. I was 23 years old and had just moved to New York City to pursue a career in theater. He was a regular at Jimmy Days and worked at Circle Repertory around the corner. As I took his order, he asked me what I did. When I told him I was really an actress he said, “Congratulations,” as if the pursuit of a career in the arts was the highest of honors. He was performing in Lanford Wilson’s “The Fifth of July” at Circle and invited me to come. I remember sitting in the dark theater, watching him on stage and falling deeply in love. For the next three years there would not be a day we would spend apart.

His name was Bill Hurt and soon after we met, he was cast in “Altered States.” He asked me to accompany him to Los Angeles for the filming. We lived in a bungalow on the beach in Malibu. On his days off we swam, read poetry to each other and made love. But our relationship quickly morphed into a different cycle. Bill would snap, physically shove, punch and beat me, followed by tears, apologies and him offering me expensive gifts. When the battering began I sloughed it off. He said he was sorry. Perhaps I instigated it. I only had to visit the ER once. It was only after many, many years I admitted to myself that I was the victim of domestic violence.

I was with Bill at the start of his career. I survived “Altered States,” “Eyewitness” and “Body Heat.” In 1980, at the height of his physical abuse, he dumped me. But we could not let each other go and remained connected, seeing each other a few times a year until 1989. In 1992, while I was living in Los Angeles, I decided to do some volunteer work for the L.A. Rape and Battery Hotline. I actually thought I had chosen this organization randomly. It was during orientation when, for the very first time, I realized I had been abused. As other volunteers were introducing themselves as survivors, it hit me that I was a survivor too.

There just isn’t enough of a loony left in the US to be worth funding by a foreign power.

More to the point, the USSR fell, and even Republicans eventually noticed that. Once they did, 95+% of the party quickly realized that Putin’s Russia was every dream they ever had, come true.

Yes, it was the 12th landing of that booster. Their design life is 10 trips. SpaceX has not lost a first stage in active flight uphill, ever.

(Though they did lose a second stage once, and had a complete rocket and payload destroy itself on the pad before launch, which has only happened a few times to any rocket operation over the history of space launches.)

Downgraded from 4-5 hours of rain to 2-3 hours of rain with light showers on either end of the front. Still, we’re on the coast so we get a lot of drops out of the clouds as they get a good updraft from the Santa Cruz mountain range.

Another congress critter takes a dirt nap:

Young took office in 1973 and has never relinquished Alaska’s sole House seat. He became Dean of the House after Rep. John Conyers resigned from Congress in 2017.

A colorful character, former Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) one claimed Young held a knife to his throat over a disagreement on earmarks. According to Boehner, Young once pinned him against a wall and held a 10-inch knife to his throat. The Speaker told him, “Fuck you.”

He sounds nice….

Interfax:

Moscow. March 19 interfax.ru - The Russian military used hypersonic missiles of the Kinzhal complex to destroy an underground military depot in western Ukraine, Igor Konashenkov, spokesman for the Russian Defense Ministry, said.

“On March 18, the Kinzhal aviation missile system with hypersonic aeroballistic missiles destroyed a large underground warehouse of missiles and aviation ammunition of Ukrainian troops in the village of Delyatyn, Ivano-Frankivsk region,” he said at a briefing on Saturday.

“Kinzhal” - an aviation complex with a high-precision hypersonic aeroballistic missile. Created on the basis of the modernized long-range fighter-interceptor MiG-31 - MiG-31K. According to the Russian military, it is capable of hitting targets at a range of more than 2,000 km, while being guaranteed to overcome all existing and developed air and missile defense systems.

It was reported that 10 fighter-interceptors in the MiG-31K Kinzhal modification were on experimental combat duty in the Southern Military District. Since April 2018, they have been on duty over the Caspian Sea. In addition, the military announced plans to equip an air regiment in the Krasnoyarsk Territory with these systems by 2024. The head of the General Staff of the Russian Federation, Valery Gerasimov, announced in December 2019 that Russia was expanding the geography of the use of the Kinzhal hypersonic aviation complex and had already tested it in the Arctic.

In February of this year, Russian MiG-31K fighters with Kinzhal hypersonic missiles arrived in Syria for exercises .

ASHLAND, Ky. (WKYT) - A federal judge has ruled that former Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis violated the constitutional rights of two same-sex couples when she denied them marriage licenses during the summer of 2015.

In an order published Friday afternoon, United States District Judge David L. Bunning of the Eastern District of Kentucky granted summary judgment in a civil lawsuit that the two couples, David Ermold and David Moore, and James Yates and Will Smith, filed against Davis.

That settles - without a trial - the question of whether Davis violated their constitutional rights, but no decision has been made yet on whether Davis will be on the hook for the likely hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal fees accrued over the six-and-a-half years of litigation.

From a little poking around, this gets complicated. It’s pretty believable that these suits were chosen and packed months ago, but also it’s clear they weren’t the ones the crew wore for launch. Unless there’s some real technical reason why they would have to change suits, you’d think that gung-ho Russian military would see the political problem and not wear them. But they did.

They have no secure communications and keep getting killed when they contact Moscow.

If Putin started this war to neutralize the threat his generals pose to him, it would look just like what we’re seeing.

Secure communications need both material and organization, and is not easy. You need to have the actual devices, in the right places to communicate properly, and compatible ones to actually be able to talk to each other securely. You need to be able to receive crypto keys, which should change on a daily basis. Obviously, none of this is happening with Russian forces, who seem also to be using the Ukrainian cellular networks. So, figure out General’s phone number, geolocate phone, tell the drone, artillery, whatever guys to put some metal on this here location, and boom.

Also, I don’t believe it’s totally crazy to think that Putin might not want an intact military, newly pissed off at being abused in a stupid foreign war, back on Russian soil. If you only care about self-preservation and not the security of the country, better to have them ground up and depleted and not a threat.

I’m wondering if some under-the-table help with comint might be helping the Ukrainians target these bigwigs. They may be doing it on their own, too, especially since the Russians’ pathetic performance could reasonably be expected to electronic security.

Btw, I don’t particularly like the idea of targeting these guys individually, asshole Putinists though they are. It’s war, though. You aren’t supposed to like it.

I’m pretty sure Ukrainians are getting all the help the West can give with intel. My understanding is that there’s a one-hour intelligence loop, just enough time to sanitize whatever needs to be sanitized from the data, and then the results passed on to Ukraine.

Those generals are military Command and Control targets. They are far more responsible for the war and its conduct than some conscript in a tank. I don’t see any ethical or legal problem targeting them personally.

I see absolutely no ethical issues concerned with killing enemy combatants or providing intelligence to allies in order to do so.

China doesn’t want that much territory. They have enough. Maybe a few neighboring areas would be nice…but economic domination doesn’t require managing that much real estate. That’s where Putin’s fucking up. He could have continued to establish puppet governments to “expand” his empire without claiming them as part of Russia. And he could still hold his plywood missile parades in Red Square.

Russia and Ukraine are at war. A general in Moscow would be a valid target; the Russian Ministry of Defense would be a valid target. Ukraine has already fired missiles at airfields in Russia to destroy their missiles, but it seems Russia doesn’t like to talk about that much.

She treated her office like it was part of her bigoted religious organization, and it looks like she’ll be made to pay for that massive personal failure.

Republicans will call you a “hero” for fucking around, then throw you under the bus when it’s time to find out.

Michael Garltand, one of the attorneys for Ermold and Moore, said “everybody should be treated fairly and equally under the eyes of the law.” He tells Rolling Stone, “My clients are happy they’re finally going to get a day in court after over seven years… The judge rejected all of Davis’ excuses, which were ridiculous.”

Gartland says now a jury will decide how much in compensatory damages Davis will have to pay and whether she should be forced to pay punitive ones.
In 2015, Davis cited “God’s authority” as to why she shouldn’t have to grant marriage licenses to gay couples. She then became a hero to right-wing politicians, including Ted Cruz and Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin. However, four years later, Bevin’s attorneys stated in court that she — and not Kentucky’s taxpayers — must be responsible for the, at the time, more than $220,000 in legal fees.

Certainly. They are targets, important ones. There is a huge gulf, though, between thinking something is legal and actually liking it. I feel a little like I did, and do, about my Vietnam service 50 years ago. I am more convinced than ever that everything I did was fully ethical and moral. I didn’t like a lot of it though and I think only a psychopath (Republican militia goof?) would.

Samuel Taylor Coleridge (Brought to you by Laudanum)

In Xanadu did Kubla Khan
A stately pleasure-dome decree:
Where Alph, the sacred river, ran
Through caverns measureless to man
Down to a sunless sea.
So twice five miles of fertile ground
With walls and towers were girdled round;
And there were gardens bright with sinuous rills,
Where blossomed many an incense-bearing tree;
And here were forests ancient as the hills,
Enfolding sunny spots of greenery.

But oh! that deep romantic chasm which slanted
Down the green hill athwart a cedarn cover!
A savage place! as holy and enchanted
As e’er beneath a waning moon was haunted
By woman wailing for her demon-lover!
And from this chasm, with ceaseless turmoil seething,
As if this earth in fast thick pants were breathing,
A mighty fountain momently was forced:
Amid whose swift half-intermitted burst
Huge fragments vaulted like rebounding hail,
Or chaffy grain beneath the thresher’s flail:
And mid these dancing rocks at once and ever
It flung up momently the sacred river.
Five miles meandering with a mazy motion
Through wood and dale the sacred river ran,
Then reached the caverns measureless to man,
And sank in tumult to a lifeless ocean;
And ‘mid this tumult Kubla heard from far
Ancestral voices prophesying war!
The shadow of the dome of pleasure
Floated midway on the waves;
Where was heard the mingled measure
From the fountain and the caves.
It was a miracle of rare device,
A sunny pleasure-dome with caves of ice!

A damsel with a dulcimer
In a vision once I saw:
It was an Abyssinian maid
And on her dulcimer she played,
Singing of Mount Abora.
Could I revive within me
Her symphony and song,
To such a deep delight ‘twould win me,
That with music loud and long,
I would build that dome in air,
That sunny dome! those caves of ice!
And all who heard should see them there,
And all should cry, Beware! Beware!
His flashing eyes, his floating hair!
Weave a circle round him thrice,
And close your eyes with holy dread
For he on honey-dew hath fed,
And drunk the milk of Paradise.

In 1943 a security breach allowed the US Navy to launch a long-range ambush of ADM Yamamoto, commander of the Pearl Harbor attack. It was intended as revenge, not a reduction in Japan’s warfighting ability. You can tell from the code name—Operation Vengance.

I pay my electric bill (PECO) online which means they get it directly from my credit union and apply it to my account. I left a warning on Find Who Calls You website and tried to call PECO. Of course the offices are closed on Saturday. Personally I think it is Inspire trying to scare me into getting their service.
