This is the last one of the currently scheduled hearings, so let’s hope they make it good, and by good I mean severely damaging to Donald Trump’s hopes of staying out of prison.

Dinner’s in the oven. Comfy chair and some knitting ready. I’d make popcorn, but dinner is an hour from now, so, no.

And when they’re finished undermining religious freedom, well, you know who they go after. There is a two thousand year history of Christians doing that.

Brave Josh Hawley ran away /
(“No!”)
Bravely ran away away.
(“I didn’t!”)
When danger reared it’s ugly head,
He bravely turned his tail and fled.
(“I never!”)
Yes, brave Josh Hawley turned about
And gallantly he chickened out.
(“You’re lying!”)
Swiftly taking to his feet,
He beat a very brave retreat.
Bravest of the brave, Josh Hawley!

And the “Hawaii” thing in 1960 should be an instructive lesson: IIRC, the new state had given Nixon a small edge in the initial vote count, and the state Gov had already certified a slate of electors- but a recount gave Kennedy (an even smaller) majority, and so they sent Congress the corrected results: reflecting the will of (even by that slim margin) the electorate. Present at that meeting were the following, Murphy said: US Reps. Matt Gaetz*, Andy Biggs*, Brian Babin, Jody Hice, Louie Gohmert*, Andy Harris, Mo Brooks*, Paul Gosar*, Scott Perry* and Jim Jordan. LINCOLN — Attorney General Doug Peterson will not file criminal charges against former State Sen. Mike Groene over photographs of a female staffer found on his laptop.

A spokeswoman said Thursday that prosecutors in the office had reviewed the results of a Nebraska State Patrol investigation into allegations that Groene took inappropriate photos of the staffer without her knowledge and shared them with others.

“It has been determined that there is insufficient information to warrant a criminal prosecution,” said Suzanne Gage, the spokeswoman.

Groene, of North Platte, resigned in February after admitting he had taken photos of the staffer, Kristina Konecko. She discovered the photos in the course of her work. He stepped down after media reports made the allegations public.

A lawyer [Tara Paulson, make sure you hire a woman to slag another woman] hired by the Unicameral to investigate stated:

In her legal analysis, she said she did not consider Groene’s actions as unlawful sexual discrimination or harassment for two primary reasons. One, because Konecko did not receive any tangible benefits through Groene’s behavior. Two, because Konecko was unaware that Groene was taking photos of her, so it did not create a hostile work environment.

So, since she got no “tangible benefit” (such as a more important job, or money), it was not “harassment.”

Gov. Ricketts appointed the biggest wingnut from North Platte he could find, which was a real trick because Groene is an ass.

No charges against former North Platte Sen. Groene over laptop photos (Omaha World-Herald, ten minutes ago)

70,000 votes in the right places would have reversed that EC count.

It’s worse than that; 44,000 votes would have thrown the election into the House and led to a Trump victory. The Electoral College will be the death of our nation. As I keep saying, even if there is no voter suppression, a candidate theoretically could win 70% of the vote and lose the election. This is an obscene institution.

The President’s authority has been usurped before.

The military deciding it would not take an order from President Nixon to launch nukes as he sank into paranoia over Watergate, unless there was a clear military attack.

Also, Edith Wilson toward the end of Woodrow Wilson’s presidency.

“Unusual orders”

We were very worried about this happening with Trump. I’m convinced that if Trump had used the biscuit to authenticate himself, the officer on the other end was going to have to perform the most important, slow, slow-walk of his career and possibly the world.

No, this ‘Florida story’ isn’t real. Stop sharing it….you’re better than that.

At first glance, you should honestly realize that ‘CNN Miami’ isn’t a real thing….let alone the fact that it’s not a verified account and only has a few thousand followers and is actually labeled as a ‘parody account’ when you click on the Twitter page.

There’s no link to a real news site with a real write up on the incident, it’s just text with a random picture of a guy that looks kind of crazy.

There is nothing legit about this at all…..and the sharing of this tweet is why other countries probably look at the U.S. and think ‘well, people will believe just about ANYTHING that’s posted online…..LET’S POST ABOUT POLITICS’

Dr. Jennifer Gunter had to take a flight. She shows with a CO2 monitor how both airports and airlines are lying about the safety from Covid-19 by claiming they are recirculating the air.

(thirteen tweets, most of the time in the airport and the flight was out-of-bounds for what’s considered safe by proxy measure of CO2, 1,000 ppm)

Further evidence you should not get on an airplane (or walk into an airport).

It’s only AS contagious as measles.

The study says they cannot properly calculate R0 due to multiple factors (multiple infections, intentional suppression of contact tracing [not noted: By Republicans], displacement of previous variants which would initially show rapid growth, &c).

Fact Check-No evidence Omicron BA.5 is more infectious than measles or is ‘the most infectious virus known’ (Reuters)

Scientists say there is no evidence that the BA.5 version of the Omicron coronavirus variant is more transmissible than measles, or that it has a basic reproduction number, or “R-naught” (R0), of 18.6, which would be greater than that of measles. While BA.5 appears to be spreading faster than other Omicrons still circulating, experts say that BA.5 is unlikely to be one of “the most infectious viruses known to man,” as some have claimed.

Mark Meadows and Mike Pence both attended the infamous December 21 meeting where the discussion focused on election theories pushed by Trump’s lawyer John Eastman, who believed that Pence was able to single-handedly reject slates of electors in his January 6 role. It is clear that Pence ultimately rejected that power, but what about Meadows? How deep was his personal involvement in the January 6 plot?

McConnell certainly was not a fan of these efforts and made it clear he wanted the official January 6 joint session to resume as soon as possible to confirm Biden’s election, but the damage he has inflicted on this nation certainly rivals that of Trump. Neither Gorsuch nor Barrett would be sitting on the Court if it weren’t for McConnell’s malicious efforts to control our judiciary.

Josh Hawley running down the halls of the Capitol like a 400m sprinter. Two new people able to directly connect Donald Trump to the planning of the insurrection including video and documentation showing he wanted this. Trump’s missing time in the Oval Office Dining Room where he was incommunicado while the insurrection raged on.

sagehen  Jul 22, 2022 • 1:46:59am

Because it was in primetime. Because Pence’s secret service agents were so scared they called their families to say goodbye. Because Trump wouldn’t let the photographer follow him that day, bypassed the switchboard, wiped the visitor logs so there’d be no paper trail (or photos) of his actions all afternoon.

Then the taping sessions for the videos he ultimately released, at the end of the insurrection and again the next day. He wouldn’t follow the script, kept refusing to say what they wanted (including, tried to not use the word “peaceful”), and it took like 12 tries with coaching from Ivanka and then editing, to finally get something they could put out in public.

The issue being the far-most popular streaming platform for video is YouTube. By mass-flagging the video, the video is taken out of the view of a lot of the world.

The front page of pbs.org shows at the top the PBS Short Film Festival. Further down, reporting on the polio case in New York, Biden testing positive for Covid-19, trucker protest shutting down the Port of Oakland, the nationwide heatwave, nope: Not finding the January 6 Committee Hearing anywhere on the site’s main page.

He is known to have been in the Oval Office Dining Room the entire time. None of the telephone calls he placed from there appear in the official logs (urging senators and representatives to delay the electoral vote). Those calls were subpoenaed from the other side of the calls. He was also watching FOX News Channel in the dining room during the insurrection.

Perhaps I’m still groggy, but I’m not getting the point o why Trump watching TV is such a big deal.

Because he could see very clearly how ugly it was getting, people swarming through the halls stealing shit and breaking shit, members of congress having to barricade in the chamber and put on gas masks before they could be evacuated, etc…

and with all that, he refused Pence, McCarthy, Fox hosts, and others calling him and begging for the National Guard but he wouldn’t send help.

I haven’t. I can wait until every one of them appears at sorryantivaxxer.com or Reddit’s r/HermanCainAward, no matter how much the Beltway pundits decry “civility” about those sites.

I still wear a mask in enclosed spaces, which I generally avoid unless I have to go shopping, etc. I am more lax about outdoor events, but still avoid ones which are particularly crowded.

I really need to go. My browser just crashed again. (I really need a new computer. I’ll bet if I started to do a GoGriftMe I could raise more money than a lot of the antivaxxers on that site.)

With that, I’m going to retire. (Actually no, my car has brand-new tires I bought just before an elk rearranged the front end.) Fookin’ tires cost $700 for the Smart (the last set I bought was a cheap set, and you get what you pay for: They lasted less than a year on our terrible roads here).

Nebraska Tire had to special order the tires because nobody’s car uses the two different size tires used on a Smart.

In NYC, masks are still required in cabs, buses, broadway shows and museums. Everywhere else, it’s up to the facility if they want to require it (my building does, Citarella and Zabar’s do, my hairdresser, other grocery stores and most shops don’t.)

There was an article in The Nebraska Observer (Kimball, Nebr.) several months ago about the change in behaviour from Panhandle residents which accompanied the polio outbreak here in the Fifties.

Like today, there was denial, conspiracy theory, shunning of people who contracted the disease (even if they fully recovered) decades later, claims either Jews or atheists were trying to spread disease and kill Christians (there are no Jews in this area that I’m aware of and atheists weren’t out in this area then either because they would be lynched), &c.

Lee Zeldin, the Republican candidate for New York governor, was attacked during a campaign stop near Rochester in upstate Monroe County on Thursday night — but escaped injury and managed to finish his speech.

Zeldin, also a sitting US congressman from Long Island, was campaigning at the Veterans of Foreign Wars post in Perinton when a man jumped on stage and lunged toward the lawmaker with an unknown weapon, according to witnesses and video of the incident.

“I saw that he [was] approaching the congressman, so I jumped up on the stage,” witness Joe Chenelly told The Post.

“The congressman turned and faced him. I thought he might just be there to hug the congressman or to, you know, maybe heckle him or something along those lines.”

The suspect was identified as 43-year-old David Jakubonis of Fairport, NY.

Jakubonis was charged with attempted assault in the second degree and released on his own recognizance.

Frank Fritz, best known for co-hosting “American Pickers” since 2010, was hospitalized after suffering a stroke, his former co-star Mike Wolfe revealed.

Taking to Instagram on Thursday, Wolfe shared the news with fans alongside an image of 56-year-old Fritz in better days.

“I have been very private in the past year in regards to Frank’s life and the journey he’s been on,” Wolfe, 58, wrote.

“There has been lots of opinions in regards to mine and Frank’s friendship and the show but now is not the time to set the record straight. Now is the time to pray for my friend.”

Wolfe asked fans to keep Fritz “in your hearts and thoughts” as he revealed his former co-star is now under the watchful eye of medical professionals.

“Frank I pray more than anything that you make it through this okay. I love you buddy,” Wolfe added.

I’m just sick and tired of pundits and journalists who think that openly showing things like Hawley running away from the insurrectionists for his life will somehow punish Hawley after Hawley keeps supporting Trump, the insurrectionists, and fundraising off same.

Punishment is criminal prosecution.
Punishment is expulsion from Congress.

This isn’t punishment. None of these fuckers have any shame or remorse about what they did. They sought to end democracy and nearly got away with it. And they’ll try again.

New term day: Invincible ignorance fallacy
The invincible ignorance fallacy, also known as argument by pigheadedness, is a deductive fallacy of circularity where the person in question simply refuses to believe the argument, ignoring any evidence given. It is not so much a fallacious tactic in argument as it is a refusal to argue in the proper sense of the word. The method used in this fallacy is either to make assertions with no consideration of objections or to simply dismiss objections by calling them excuses, conjecture, etc. or saying that they are proof of nothing, all without actually demonstrating how the objection fit these terms. It is similar to the ad lapidem fallacy, in which the person rejects all the evidence and logic presented, without providing any evidence or logic that could lead to a different conclusion.

.22 Long rifle, straight blowback, 10 round magazine. Only difference between it and, for example, a Marlin 60 is cosmetic. What this also points out is how foolish gun bans based on “oh it looks like a scary assault rifle” are because while this looks like a evil black gun it is no different from many others I used as a teen, for example.

To make a difference we have to ignore cosmetic issues and say something like “Lets regulate centerfire semi-automatic rifles with removable magazines as class III firearms under the NFA”. No mention specific models, no mention of pistol grips or bayonet lugs or other cosmetic features - only the things that make them dangerous.

Agree that we should regulate based on function, but that’s what the GOP and NRA will most vigorously try blocking - because they know such a ban would be more inclusive than just identifying specific models by name.

I’m sort of with Stonekettle that the first step is addressing the responsibility and safe storage side. Owner is responsible for anything that happens with the gun - there are no “accidents”. Charged with crimes accordingly with the damage done.

That is where you start the cultural change necessary to get to other places. Once the gun is fairly seen as a tool, a dangerous tool, and protective steps regarding them are necessary and also strictly enforced I think the glamour of them will start to reduce.

As I’ve said before, the only distinction between Cheney and her colleagues in the House is that she opposes imposing a fascist dictatorship on America by any means necessary. I think the fact that she is in every respect a standard issue Republican works to our favor, because nobody can credibly claim she is ideologically motivated to undermine the GOP; if anything she is trying to save it. Anyway, Trumpworld is drawing up detailed plans to ensure that he will face no opposition from inside the Executive Branch to his plans to impose fascism on America if he is able to seize power in 2025.

My only complaint with the hearing is that they keep going over the fact that trump knew the election was not rigged. Not be the point. He had no authority to overturn the results. I take no responsibility that he did not know the law(s) of the country he was president of.

At his criminal trials, this is an important point. If he had a good faith belief that there was fraud, his actions such as calling the Georgia SoS were arguably to ask for legitimate investigations, rather than strong arming him into committing election fraud. He could argue that on January 6 he was just exercising his free speech rights, rather than inciting a riot to reverse an election he knew he had lost.

That’s where the NFA comes in. You can’t just buy a regulated item and take it home. You want a rifle that looks scary? Fine. If it’s under the NFA you’ll have lots of hoops and extra costs.

Let’s say you want a short barreled (under 16”) rifle currently.
First you pay for the item.
Then you submit your 4473 for the initial background check.
Then you submit your Form 1 to “make and register” your firearm.
Then you pay your $200 for your tax stamp.
Then you wait for the government to process your form 1, currently takes between 6 and 9 months, and only when that’s DONE can you take your purchase home.
Then you have to keep it secured to ATF regulations.

Getting a bolt action, a pump/lever action or a rifle with a small built-in magazine suddenly is more appealing to legitimate users and unappealing to mass shooters.

Note that this is what I think should happen to all centerfire semiautomatic rifles with a removable magazine not what I expect will happen any time soon.

DeSantis is just another politician, granted in the Trump mold, not the empty suit personas of Romney era GOP politicians. Hawley could have run in the primary, but from where I sit, if it isn’t Trump, it’s DeathSantis. He’s got all the right credentials as a front-line culture warrior. He’s got national recognition, thanks to the way he’s driven the state of Florida into the ocean. If Trump does get convicted of a crime that disqualifies him from holding office, the throne is his for the taking. The REAL problem here isn’t who we get to replace Trump in the eyes of the fascist right; it’s the fact that the rest of the right wing will vote in lock step with the fascists, for no other reason than because Republicans are the Party of Christ in the eyes of way too many Christians and church leaders. What we really need to do is turn the tide the other way, to divorce religious identity and political identity, but the Republicans and the fundamentalist Christians have spent way too long building up that combination.

99% exactly.

i’d change that italicized part - in my mind the issue is the potential damage that could have been done - ie the threat.

if a guy waves a gun around in a crowd and doesnt fire, was any damage done?

if a parent leaves a gun out and no kid picks it up and shoots himself was any damage done?

sure no bodily damage, but in both cases i’d say yes. a great deal…

As long as the opposition is loyal to democracy, and willing to concede power when they lose elections, I have no problem with the existence of a party that stands for things I loathe. It seems that Russia has stopped doing as much weapons fire as it has before:

Yesterday, Markos talked about shaping the battlefield for success and that it seemed that Russia’s tactic for this was to reduce as much stuff to rubble as possible. It hasn’t really succeeded, and if they’re really starting to run out of ammo, this will become impossible.

It probably isn’t so much that they are running out of ammo as that its a lot harder for them to get it to where it needs to be. The Ukrainians have been destroying Russian ammo dumps close to the front, forcing them to relocate them farther back from the front line. And Russian C&C is literally dying.

The simple truth is this: We are now in the “acceptable losses” phase of the pandemic.

I see it here in my little part of Europe as well - I’d say less than 1% of anyone is masking anywhere. Hell, you can’t even find masks or respirators in the supermarkets anymore; if you want that, you’ll have to go to a pharmacy.

Masks are still the social norm here. Mostly required in public spaces (for the moment it’s up to the individual business, but they almost all require it), mandatory to use public transit. I believe they will be mandatory everywhere starting in a few days because of increasing numbers.

Perhaps I’m still groggy, but I’m not getting the point o why Trump watching TV is such a big deal.

Because he wasn’t doing anything else (like calling the local national guard or the secretary of defense) but watching TV and calling his buddies like Rudy Giuliani. It showed him watching the carnage and doing NOTHING to intervene.

My floor fan’s motor (used to move air around in my bedroom and also provide some background noise) burned out overnight. So today my neighbors are going to be listening to Rammstein for background noise while I work. Seriously, the fan isn’t that noisy, but I’m irritated this morning that I am so sensitive to it NOT being there that I woke up when it stopped running.

NY DA Bragg lost his nerve and his cowardice led to not indicting Trump despite the opportunity and the evidence to do so. DOJ continues slow rolling their ongoing investigations. Georgia’s investigations seem on better ground, but we still face an uphill battle with the jury pool and justice system that seems determined to give Trump every opportunity to be above the law and ready to end democracy in 2024.

And the reason he was doing nothing, based on the evidence, is that the mob was doing exactly what Trump intended them to do as part of his plan to prevent Congress from certifying Biden’s election victory. So its not mere negligence on Trump’s part, but a criminal conspiracy to overthrow the US government.

Perhaps I’m still groggy, but I’m not getting the point o why Trump watching TV is such a big deal.

more:

Charlie Sykes: “As Capitol police battled rioters, Secret Service agents feared for their lives, and legislators fled to safety, the President of the United States sat in his dining room and refused pleas to call it off. For hours, he watched television, never once calling the Defense Department, the D.C. National Guard, or anyone else in law enforcement.”

“Trump didn’t call off the mob, because it was doing precisely what he wanted; and he was using the delay caused by the attack to lobby his allies to help execute his coup. Only when it was apparent that the assault on the Capitol had failed, did he bother to call off his Insurrection. And, as we saw on his ‘blooper reel’ last night, he refused to say that the election was over, even after the violence, and after the congressional vote to certify Joe Biden’s victory.”

though it’s more than that
he orchestrated it
‘doing nothing’ was an integral part of the plan
if it succeeded, well, he ‘wins’
if not, plausible deniability (though now it seems, maybe not so much)

There is certainly probable cause to indict Trump. Normally the DOJ doesn’t want to prosecute unless it has a slam dunk, but I think they have an overwhelming case based on circumstantial evidence that Trump conspired to unleash a violent attack on the Capitol as part of his conspiracy to reverse his election loss and retain power.

99% exactly.

i’d change that italicized part - in my mind the issue is the potential damage that could have been done - ie the threat.

if a guy waves a gun around in a crowd and doesnt fire, was any damage done?

if a parent leaves a gun out and no kid picks it up and shoots himself was any damage done?

sure no bodily damage, but in both cases i’d say yes. a great deal…

you irresponsibly brandish a weapon, you’ve lost control.

I believe that brandishing and waving around a weapon in a public space is already a crime. Just seldom enforced on the open carry crowd.

Gun being left out could be considered a violation of not following safe storage regulations. But I expect that ends up as an add-on charge after the police are there for some other reason.*

* - And also becomes another way for a corrupt police officer to frame someone for something. But like I told someone at dinner last night if the police officer wants to pin something on you in order to arrest/charge/ticket you they will find it.

there’s very little perry mason did that would annoy a judge. He got permission before he wheeled in exhibits. He never tried to introduce stuff in closing because he never got to closings. There was always either a tearful confession in the box, or a move (granted) by the prosecution to end the case and have someone else arrested. The cops and DA thought Mason played fast and loose (and yes, he did occasionally have his clients hide out in places he didn’t know about so that he could honestly claim he had no idea what the whereabouts of his clients were) with the legal system, but the beautiful thing about that Raymond Burr series, at least, is that Burger is actually a fully competent DA, and he and the police are fully capable of playing on the edges of ethical behavior as well.

And in her deluded mind, Nikki Haley thinks she’ll be a big contender.

While discussing a new Iran deal to be made under the Biden administration, the former South Carolina governor and U.S. ambassador to the United Nations told the audience Monday at the Christians United for Israel Summit in Washington that “the next president will shred it on her first day in office.”

What Trump may have liked the least was the suggestion that Mike Pence was running the country. In Milley’s words, Meadows told the General “We have to kill the narrative that the Vice President is making all the decisions. We need to establish the narrative that the President is still in charge.”

In one sense the President was in charge — he was trying to stop the final certification and that remained his goal.

After a long standing applause, Haley added, “Just saying, sometimes it takes a woman.”

Yeah, sure Nikki.

The GQP will never vote for a woman. They’re doing everything they can to restore “traditional American society”, according to their definition, which means women are in the kitchen or in the bedroom, never in the workplace. A woman president would be the antithesis of everything they’re striving to achieve.

They’ll totally vote for a woman if that woman meets the requisite criteria - owns the libs enough, panders to white supremacy enough, and is promoted by FOX News enough. That’s all that’s required. These people do what their hate-priests tell them, and if it’s to vote for a woman that hates like they do, they’ll do it. Gloria Borger (CNN): “It’s hard, of course, to choose among the striking revelations in the last episode of season one of the January 6 hearings, but how about this: Top staffers knew exactly who Donald Trump was, and decided to remain anyway.”

“It’s an argument we heard over and over again throughout recent years: Yeah, I coulda left this guy, but I thought it was better to stay so I could be part of the guardrails around Trump.”

“But here’s what we learned during these hearings: There were no guardrails around the then-President, and certainly none strong enough to contain his election fraud mania. In fact, Trump busted through them with great regularity. And when he didn’t (as in deciding not to fire his deputy attorney general and replace him with an election denier), it was only because he was told it would look bad for him if his entire Justice Department resigned.”

“So what we saw instead was a group of people dealing with a man they knew to be morally, intellectually and emotionally unfit for the office.

I’m gonna disagree slightly- while your premise is likely correct, it’s also true that for today’s GOP, those “traditional” gender roles are only binding on the “little people”, and that they would be just fine with [recoils in horror] a President Nikki Haley (or Kristi
Noem, or Marsha Blackburn, etc.): having a reliable Party hack with a rigid ideology in the WH is the main goal: and if said hack is woman, so much the better to deflect criticism.

Last month, Palin gave her seal of approval to South Carolina gubernatorial hopeful Nikki Haley. At a rally in Columbia, Palin said she came to give a “shout-out to a strong pro-family, pro-life, pro-Second Amendment, pro-development, conservative reformer.”
The cheers of that day were followed by a big boost in name recognition for Haley, who was battling to get attention in a crowded field of candidates.

This is quite interesting - it’s a translation of an article from the Moscow Times:

In April 2022 alone, the presidential administration received 41,666 complaints from relatives of soldiers who went missing during the war in Ukraine. According to Important Stories (recognized as an “undesirable organization” and “foreign agent”), relatives of the military write that they applied to the Ministry of Defense and the military registration and enlistment offices, but did not receive any information about their fate.

Complaints increased after the ministry stopped responding to citizen inquiries. The last time the military department reported 1351 dead and no longer published information about the losses. The authorities also do not publish lists of soldiers killed or captured in Ukraine.

And now it’s going on the end of July. I wonder what those numbers look like now.

South Carolina bill outlaws websites that tell how to get an abortion

The bill aims to block more than abortion: Provisions would outlaw providing information over the internet or phone about how to obtain an abortion. It would also make it illegal to host a website or “[provide] an internet service” with information that is “reasonably likely to be used for an abortion” and directed at pregnant people in the state.

Yep—think of this one as a “blueprint”

Legal scholars say the proposal is likely a harbinger of other state measures, which may restrict communication and speech as they seek to curtail abortion. The June proposal, S. 1373, is modeled off a blueprint created by the National Right to Life Committee (NRLC), an antiabortion group, and designed to be replicated by lawmakers across the country.

Same blueprint as the secessionists 150 plus years ago. They had laws and rules to prohibit abolitionist materials from being in the mails. And I guess the local postmasters went along with it. Apparently there are some idiots driving around shooting a paint-ball gun at pedestrians in Lubbock. The gun does not have an orange tip so the victims think they are about to be shot with a real gun. There were several incidents a few weeks ago, same description, then another last night. Given that this is Lubbock, there is a good probability that a would-be target will see the paint ball gun, draw their own real handgun and smoke the perp well before it becomes obvious that the perp’s bullets are paintballs.

CVS Health is asking pharmacists in some states to verify that a few of the prescriptions they provide will not be used end a pregnancy.

A spokesman said Thursday that the drugstore chain recently started doing this for methotrexate and misoprostol, two drugs used in medication abortions but also to treat other conditions.

Spokesman Mike DeAngelis said the policy started the first week in July in Alabama, Arkansas, Idaho, Oklahoma, and Texas.

The drugstore chain’s request comes after the U.S. Supreme Court last month overturned Roe v. Wade, the 1973 decision that had provided a constitutional right to abortion. The ruling is expected to lead to abortion bans in roughly half the states.

DeAngelis said state laws that restrict the dispensing of medications used for abortions have forced the company to start the validations. He noted that some of the laws come with criminal penalties.

The drugstore chain, which is based in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, is asking care providers to help by including their diagnosis on the prescriptions.

DeAngelis said CVS Health will still fill prescriptions for miscarriages or ectopic pregnancies, which grow outside the womb and are not viable.

“We will continue to focus on delivering care to our patients while complying with state laws and federal guidance that continues to evolve,” DeAngelis said in an email.

This gets very complicated very fast.

Can Texas tell Google, which is incorporated in Delaware but is located in California, what it can and cannot do?

The legality and technology of all this is far from clear.

A woman in Texas searching for abortion pills could tunnel the request through a VPN server in illinois

Blue states could also fight back by passing analogous laws to target products and services in red states. If Illinois wanted to pass a law banning advertisements for Disney World or Miami hotels from appearing in Illinois, it could do so.
