Bannon Verdict: Former Trump Strategist Guilty of Contempt of Congress

Crime • Views: 21,000

There it is: Bannon verdict: Former Trump strategist guilty of contempt of Congress.

Finally some consequences for this would-be fascist. If the judge throws the book at him, he could end up with two years in prison.

U.S. District Judge Carl J. Nichols scheduled sentencing for Oct. 21. Each of the two misdemeanor charges is punishable by at least 30 days and up to one year in jail. But such prosecutions are rare, and no one has been incarcerated for contempt of Congress in more than half a century, since the red-baiting trials of the Cold War era.

No one has tried ending democracy in America either, and stonewalling investigators and Congress is what Bannon was doing. Throwing the book at this cretin is the bare minimum justice demands.

I’m thinking a few more people are going to testify. Of course most will try to run out the clock. Two steps forward.

LOL indeed: what does The Pustule think the J6 Committee members have to “testify in open court” about? That they are who they say they are (not “crisis actors”)?? That they did indeed issue a proper subpoena for him (actually signed and all)?? That Bannon basically wiped his loathly ass with the subpoena (and podcasted about it) shouldn’t need testimony-under-oath to confirm: he bragged about it in public.

And yes: Steve Bannon DID NOT show up to testify before Congress when legally required to. And THAT is the main only issue that the trial was all about.

Do Federal pens still have rockpiles? Steve could use the exercise….

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — The sheriff in Kansas’ most populous county says he took it for granted that local elections ran smoothly — until former President Donald Trump lost there in 2020.

Now he’s assigned detectives to investigate what he claims is election fraud, even though there has been no evidence of any widespread fraud or manipulation of voting machines in 2020. Calvin Hayden in Johnson County, which covers suburban Kansas City, isn’t the only sheriff in the U.S. to try to carve out a bigger role for their office in investigating elections.

Promoters of baseless conspiracy theories that the last presidential election was stolen from Trump are pushing a dubious theory that county sheriffs can access voting machines and intervene in how elections are run — and also have virtually unchecked power in their counties.

snip

Hayden appeared at the “FreedomFest” in Las Vegas earlier this month, held by the Constitutional Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association, although his office said he is not a member of the group.

Onstage with him were sheriffs Dar Leaf of Barry County in southwest Michigan and Chris Schmaling of Racine County in Wisconsin, south of Milwaukee. Both say they are investigating election fraud claims, and both accuse state officials of violating election laws.

“We’ve been educating ourselves about elections,” Hayden told the gathering. “I’ve sent my detectives through — I’ve got a cyber guy. I sent him through to start evaluating what’s going on with the machines.”

Hayden, a Republican, did not elaborate and declined to be interviewed this week, citing what he said was his ongoing investigation. State and local election officials in Kansas said his office has not gained access to voting machines, and other Johnson County officials said there are no indications of any problems with the 2020 elections there.

The constitutional sheriffs’ group declares on its website that a sheriff’s power in a county is greater than that of any other official and “even supersedes the powers of the President.” Leaf filed a lawsuit in June against Michigan’s attorney general and secretary of state, accusing them of trying to stifle his investigation. He said a sheriff “has no superiors in his county.”

Resting today from covid booster and pneumonia vaccine double hit yesterday.

I happened to re-watch the Jan 6. Committee Day 7 presentation, and it improves in repetition. The crazy meeting in the Oval office which moved to the residence oval meeting room: Trump realizing his White House people weren’t going to get him what he wanted, which led to the Dec 19th ‘It’ll be wild” tweet which specifically directed the mob components to get to Washington on Jan. 6. A clear sequence of cause and effect.

in less time than it took Trump to respond to the attack on the Capitol.

in about 1/80 of a Scaramucci
(assuming standard temperature and pressure. In a vacuum, the Scaramucci runs at a different rate)

however 90 times longer than the typical interlude between Trump and Stormy Daniels.

I bought a new refrigerator, it was supposed to be delivered today. I told building management, they hung the padding in the elevator for it. I waited all day. It didn’t show.

I spoke to the store manager. He says so sorry, we had to wait for it to get to our warehouse. How’s Tuesday?

Meanwhile, it’s over 95º, and will continue at or above that temp for the next few days. And I don’t have a fridge. I’m irritated. I have to go SOMEPLACE OTHER THAN MY HOME to get a cold drink.

I lived with a lousy fridge for three months while the guy who manages this joint for the property management tried to find work-arounds to just ordering me a new fridge, so I feel ya. In fairness, eventually I did get a fridge, and it’s a good one. Roomier than the old one and a bit more sophisticated as far as temp regulation goes.

Familiar with DiBruno. In contrast to the sandwich cultists, “Antipasti” is about as exotic a name as they use (great products too). The rest includes such things as “salami,” “bacon,” and “crackers.”
Truth is, I think a lot of the sandwich shop’s convoluted terminology is based on pretense, a badly outdated one at that. A hundred years ago, knowing European food names, but not languages, was an indication that you had taken the Grand Tour and were therefore part of the gentry at least. 1) Doing his usual shtick of pointing out the cultural differences of the “Heartland Out-of-Towner” vs, the “City Slicker” (but as usual. awkwardly) to try to make some convoluted sociopolitical point.

2. Using examples that most New Yorkers would see though as bullshit from the get-go (and those “gourmet sandwich shops” - overpriced as they are - are a staple of the NYC lunch trade, found on commercial streets all over Manhattan - or were, pre-COVID - should have been no surprise).

3. Showed his own backside by trying to turn a common incident of daily interactions into a Great Cultural Fable about Elitist Alienation From The Ordinary Folk: rather than simply telling his out-of-town guest that “Sopressata is a kind of mildly-garlicky Italian salami, and “Capicollo” is a dry prosciutto-like pork”, he just HAD to try to sermonize about it. And, AFAICR, got roundly and justly mocked for it.

I could not convince one of my high school teachers (more than 40 years ago) that there was an internment camp in my home town (Bismarck, ND). Offered to prove it to him but he was convinced it wasn’t worth the time because, obviously, nothing like that could have existed in ND since Japan and California are so far away.

Certainly didnt learn about the camp at school. The only reason I knew about it was because my dad’s boss was a German seaman “captured” in the port of Duluth, MN. He was a POW there and decided to stay after the war. The camp in ND started with German and Italian POWs, but later Americans of Japanese descent were moved there.

PBS just had a documentary about an alliance between the Manzanar detainees and their descendants, local ranchers, and the indigenous… apparently Los Angeles Department of Water and Power owns the land, and the water rights, they emptied a big lake and pumped a lot of groundwater, devastated the whole area…

“Manzanar, Diverted: When Water Becomes Dust”
pbs.org

At the foot of the majestic snow-capped Sierras, Manzanar, the WWII concentration camp, becomes the confluence for memories of Payahuunadü, the now-parched “land of flowing water.” Intergenerational women from Native American, Japanese American and rancher communities form an unexpected alliance to defend their land and water from Los Angeles.

This utterly corrupt SCOTUS has made it perfectly clear that there is NO precedent they cannot overturn, save the ones that offer power and personal security to themselves or the racist and misogynist Republican agenda.

For instance, the precedent of Marbury vs. Madison remains safe for now because that case is the very foundation of judicial review which gives the white supremacist agenda Justices on this vile court the power they crave. However for most other precedent, watch out- nothing is safe. The only thing keeping the Loving Case from being overturned is because it would affect Clarence Thomas personally.
