A reminder that that the Georgia investigations should be devastating to Trump and his crew, but also, potentially more devastating to Trump personally: the E. Jean Carrol rape case got the go-ahead and is scheduled for February next year.

I’d be willing to draw an assault charge to defend a retail worker from a feral Christian.

There was a place for cannibalism here, the greatest survival story of the twentieth century (and, no, I am not forgetting Shackleton):
Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571

The bodies of our friends and team-mates, preserved outside in the snow and ice, contained vital, life-giving protein that could help us survive. But could we do it?

For a long time, we agonized. I went out in the snow and prayed to God for guidance. Without His consent, I felt I would be violating the memory of my friends; that I would be stealing their souls.

We wondered whether we were going mad even to contemplate such a thing. Had we turned into brute savages? Or was this the only sane thing to do? Truly, we were pushing the limits of our fear.—Survivor Roberto Canessa

I read Alive: The Story of the Andes Survivors about the incident.

The Essex was an American whaler which was attacked and sunk by a sperm whale. Thousands of miles from the coast of South America with little food and water, the 20-man crew was forced to make for land in the ship’s surviving whaleboats.
The men suffered severe dehydration, starvation, and exposure on the open ocean, and the survivors eventually resorted to eating the bodies of the crewmen who had died. When that proved insufficient, members of the crew drew lots to determine whom they would sacrifice so that the others could live. A total of seven crew members were cannibalized before the last of the eight survivors were rescued, more than three months after the sinking of the Essex.

Churches in this state are promoting this film to school boards here.

A new film, “The Mind Polluters” has been publicly shown nearly two-dozen times around Nebraska. It’s been repeatedly cited at local school board meetings and heralded by current school board candidates. The spokesman for the Nebraska Department of Education, the president for the Nebraska Education Association and local experts say the movie, which is billed as a documentary, is littered with misinformation and falsehoods. Obviously time to bring out the infamous Republican cannibal Alferd (not “Alfred”) Packer.

In 1968, students at the University of Colorado Boulder named their new cafeteria grill the “Alferd G. Packer Memorial Grill”, with the slogan, “Have a friend for lunch!”

In 1977, the US Secretary of Agriculture, Bob Bergland, attempted to terminate a contract for the department’s cafeteria food service but was prevented by the General Services Administration (GSA). To embarrass the GSA, Bergland and his employees convened a press conference on August 10, 1977, to unveil a plaque naming the executive cafeteria “The Alferd Packer Memorial Grill”, announcing that Packer’s life exemplified the spirit and fare of the cafeteria and would “serve all mankind”.

The annual Philadelphia Folk Festival features a dining tent emblazoned with the tongue-in-cheek moniker: “The Alfred E. Packer Memorial Dining Hall…serving humanity since 1874”.

State Senator Adam Morfeld (D) three years ago pushed through possibly the toughest revenge porn law in the nation here in Nebraska.

A case is now moving forward in Fremont to go after a man engaging in it.

‘This guy has to be stopped’: Fremont police investigating ‘sextortion’ case with multiple potential victims (KETV, Omaha, July 19, 2022)

FREMONT, Neb. —

Several law enforcement agencies are investigating a sextortion case that may have dozens of victims.

A young woman said she’s among dozens of women in the Fremont area whose photos have been posted without their consent.

She said they have no idea who’s behind it.

There is a state law that prosecutors can use in cases like this.

That law, passed in 2019, targets revenge porn or sharing intimate photos of someone without their consent.

Ethan Schmidt was arrested on a warrant out of Mesa because he had harassed the proprietors and customers of a wig shop which specializes in wigs for cancer patients. The business requires patrons to wear masks, because golly gee whiz, some of their customers are immunocompromised. Schmidt is the kind of asshat who, as part of his anti-mask crusade, would insist on entering the establishment without a mask. He deserves to be arrested for trespassing.

He’s also taken up harassing Jo-Ann Fabric & Crafts and, as you saw, PetSmart and also Petco. Trump-endorsed gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake has taken pictures with Schmidt and not disavowed him.

He “joked” about this in August 2019 when speaking at a veterans’ event. But Trump doesn’t have a real sense of humor; he may very well have truly considered this as an honor he merited.

To paraphrase the people who work with him: He says whatever comes out of his piehole with no regard for anything other than the immediate audience and how to influence them to do his bidding.

This is why I roll my eyes at all your ridiculous “Dems suck at messaging” nonsense. The media creates a narrative about Outrage/Doom MacGuffin and demand Dems jump through hoops to fix it.

I still recall being in an airport in 2016, with all the TVs tuned into an empty podium waiting for Trump to come and brush off charges of mismanaging charity funds.

What was Hillary up to at that moment? Giving a speech on better job opportunities for the handicapped.

But empty podium won out.

Trumps true supporters are MAGAts, they don’t like the GOP either, but they will vote for Trump if he is their candidate.

That was noted by a number of political scientists in the aftermath of the 2016 Apocalypse. Polling and surveys seemed to indicate that Trump brought out a whole lot of bigots who’d never voted before. The trick for any Republican now would be to keep the bigot brigade together, by acting as bad or worse than Trump. Folks like Hawley, DeSantis, and Cruz are trying, but Cruz was already rejected by the same voters once.

As for “normal” Republicans, they will vote for whatever crazy floats to the top of the primaries, because they wouldn’t consider a Democrat and “who the hell else are we going to vote for anyway?” The so-called normal Republicans will happily vote us right back into Mediæval Christian Fascism (complete with the slaughter and holy wars).

How Gamergate was the precursor to the rise of the so-called alt-right, from a talk by Ian Danskin (YouTuber “Innuendo Studios”) for University of California Merced.

Innuendo Studios has a series of videos on how the “alt-right” (Nazis) became mainstreamed in the Republican Party, the vehicle for which was Gamergate. (There were always Nazis in the Republican Party; Gamergate pushed by 4chan and later 8chan is how they were mainstreamed though culture-jamming in the media.)

Of the three “normal Republicans” I regularly talk to or sort of track via Facebook they seem to fall into three camps. (And I can project a few others onto the same rough model.)
1. Have seen enough and have enough political acumen and understanding to be voting for Democrats from now on. (One of the three)

2. Heartily disapprove of Trump, but will pull lever for Republicans anyways due to “reasons”. (Match what you say above.) Usually due to religions conservatism, but for at least one of them there is a heavy undercurrent of racism due to upbringing. (One of the three - plus others.)

3. Not really a Republican as compared to a pseudo-Libertarian. The latter only comes out when they are inconvenienced by something. Which leads to them voting Republican since they are told the GOP is pro-freedom and the Democrats are the ones making the mask mandates, taxing them, etc. etc. I’d also put most of the “a pox on both their houses” people in here. They don’t like either party and believe them similar without understanding or wanting to understand that from a policy standpoint the parties *are* different. (One of the three here since they spout about “tyranny” when inconvenienced during the initial responses to the Covid pandemic.)

I also know a few Democrat voters who have bought into the Bernie Sanders show. They are at least still smart enough to vote and not stay home, e.g. they are not quite purity pony types though they also seem to not quite understand that the current political climate is not trending towards Sanders stuff at all.

Note: Most of the above are males. The females of whom I know their political leanings are all quite liberal, vote Democrat, are generally *very* pissed off right now, and also are much more politically active than the males I interact with.

Japanese sweets, but also at 4:25 are those e-bikes for rent? I’ve been away from Japan for too long, it seems, if the rows of old fashioned bikes are being replaced with electric ones.

Also, shonosuke monaka is sweet for sure and I liked it but usually found the ratio of bean paste to shell was too much. I prefer the little folded pancakes which had the same bean paste. Regardless, if one is traveling in Japan or even goes to a Japanese store here in the US be sure to try one of these bean paste pastries:

The real issue of why conservatives who are terminally on-line constantly attack people like US Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez or Nebraska State Senator Megan Hunt is not because of who they are. It’s because they both are also on-line all the time, so they recognise the core anti-Semitism, rape culture, and threats, and can call out conservatives for the liars they are to people who don’t understand weaponising thought-stopping memes.

If you aren’t familiar with on-line Nazis, how do you recognise the series of eighty-eight adverts with fourteen words each released by the Republican Party?

re: #119 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷

In the case of Rep. Ocasio-Cortez, because she is Catholic, on-line Nazis can rope in some Protestants in their attacks as useful idiots.

In the case of atheist state senator Hunt, the same Nazis can rope in all Christians as useful idiots.

In the case of US Representative Ilhan Omar, they can attack her over her Islamic faith, and rope in Christians in their rejection of Islam as “un-American” while throwing in lies about “marrying her brother.”

In all three women’s cases, it increases the numbers of people attacking them (the goal to drive them out of politics and public life), along with burying rape and death threats against them in an avalanche of Protestant (or Christian) hatred.

I imagine the vast majority of Christians attacking the women, if they knew they were being used by Nazis, would cease those lines of attack. However, they don’t really want to know why they are so angry at those particular women. It’s much easier to simply say “Catholic, atheist, Muslim” rather than looking deeper to find out how they are being goaded into it.

That makes them dangerous. It only takes one so-called lone wolf to end any one of those women, which the rest of the group can then disavow as not representative of them: the same argument used in “ethics in gaming journalism” when Zoë Quinn and Anita Sarkeesian got endless death threats and bombing threats, or when so-called “incels” shoot up colleges and schools, or when FOX News or anti-abortion groups spin up hate against women’s clinic workers. The chance they might be hurt approaches unity if you can rope in enough people with differing reasons to hate them. To Nazis or other propagandists, it doesn’t matter who silences them, only that they are silenced.

Each one of those reasons (savvy, ethnic, &c) is enough. The hatred poured out at AOC covers a whole range of things aside from “hot and unattainable.”

For the folks manipulating all these people though, the reason doesn’t matter. It only takes one to end her.

Christians don’t have to be goaded to be hateful. Christians in this country owned human beings and defended slavery, fought for the Confederacy and justified Jim Crow. Nothing about what they’re doing now is surprising and no one else is to be blamed. Unfortunately for leftwing Christians, Christianity in the U.S. has been conflated into rightwing politics. With the vice grip that Conservative Christians have on SCOTUS, I don’t see that changing any time soon.

Republicans don’t care about stopping inflation. They don’t care that your rent has increased. They don’t care about the price of groceries and gas. They don’t care that you are melting in the heat or fleeing from yet another once-in-a century hurricane. They don’t care about your privacy to make personal medical decisions, who or how you love, or how you present your gender to the world. They certainly don’t care about you if you are not white or cis-male. They don’t care if you are in a union or want to be in one. They don’t care that there is still a potentially deadly virus going around. They don’t care if they put judges on the bench who would fit right in three centuries ago.

They care about two things: Power and tax cuts for corporations and wealthy people. That’s it. They have demonstrated time and time again that they will lie, cheat, steal and say whatever they think will fire up their base in order to win. Winning is the whole game for them. They have zero interest in improving the lives of average Americans. What they do have interest in is breaking democracy if they think that will keep them in power. They are doing that work openly and brazenly.

This is also the byproduct of too many candidates fracturing the votes so that the one with the most devoted fans can emerge triumphant. It’s a joke, of course, but there may be more truth to it than we realize. Howard died in 1995, so he saw the OJ trial at least. He might also have been aware of Jenner’s gender dysphoria, since Jenner has said that it dated back to childhood.

Anyone paying attention at the time was aware of the excesses involved in professional sports, but there was too much money at stake, and its image was so tied up with American values that to even scrutinize it too closely was tantamount to treason.

I suspect they are being tolerated as a lot of protesters are in order to avoid a larger disturbance.

re: #112 FFL (GOP Delenda Est)

My boss is a conservative Republican woman who believes Fox News. She is intelligent enough to get vaccinated herself, but believes vaccine mandates are tyranny. She did reluctantly concede that if we had a vaccine mandate, our unvaccinated coworker who died of Covid in December might still be alive today.

I would not assume a conspiracy without evidence; they could just be exploiting an opportunity this guy presented. Now if evidence of a connection between the Zeldin Campaign and the attacker is found, that should be pursued.

I don’t assume Zeldin cooked it up with the attacker. Occam’s says to me Zeldin exploited this rando opportunity. I wouldn’t rule it out. But if Zeldin cooked it up with the attacker he probably would have had a real knife or something more horrific, not the plastic thingy.

This is a completely abhorrent attempt by Scientology to force ex-members to adhere to their fake, sick, twisted “arbitration” decades after Masterson’s alleged victims left Scientology. The California Supreme Court opinion is unpublished, thus NOT precedential (which is too bad) but is considered not appealable. I would hope the USSCT doesn’t take this case, but given that precedent is on the chopping block, I am not holding my breath. We absolutely DO NOT want Scientology’s position to be the law of the land.

FUCK!

But, as you said above, you can’t tell them what to do. A few dead is just the price to be paid.

The best thing I encountered in this regard was the fraternity brother on Facebook ranting about how he couldn’t wear a mask, making him do so was tyranny, how could he grocery shop if they made him wear a mask (along with the plan on using one of those fake medical letters), how dare the governor close bars and state parks, etc. etc.

Then he mentioned that he was going to visit his mother in Pittsburgh. (Who lives with his sister.)

The very next comment on the Facebook thread was his sister telling him outright he was not setting foot in her house without having a mask on.

And, amazingly enough, he quickly came up with a way to sort of mask up by using one of those pseudo-lower face bandana things. (Which a lot of places accepted for at least a while.)

A report of a suspicious death not far from here led me down a weird rabbit hole that ended on Free Republic.

I googled to see if there were any updates and came across a link to “suspicions of a serial killer in NH.” That led to a story of a women whose dismembered remains were found in a washing machine dredged from the bottom of a pond in northern NH. That led to a story about a couple that the victim had been staying with—a real dirtbag couple who seemed to have been taking the victim’s disability checks. The wife’s name was Ashley Ruff Smith. That led to a story about the arrest of her parents in the early 2000s for living in a home with five children that was covered in garbage and animal feces, but it turns out the link came from FR. And the first five or six comments: “democrats.”

re: #197 FFL (GOP Delenda Est)

My brother watches Fox News, hates Joe Biden and is a fan of a Calvary Chapel church in southern Colorado, but he has at least not completely slid off the edge. When I was sick with Covid last month, he made it clear to both me and to my mother (based on remarks she made to me later) that he wouldn’t let me into the house until I tested negative. Which took eight days. But I waited 10 days just to be sure, because I wouldn’t be able to forgive myself if I brought Covid to my mother.

But I’m still giving him the side eye and there are some things I have not told him because of his resurgent right-wing religious tendencies. And if the SHTF, I’d have to take that into consideration. God I hate this.
