Got CL’d:

re: #270 Joe Bacon

I never get bonuses. Most I usually get is the “Thank you for all your hard work, team!” boilerplate emails and the occasional shoutout from my manager in our monthly meeting.

Last month our entire team got “rewarded” with $75 of company swag at no cost (with free shipping!) from our employee estore.

Living the dream, I tell you.

Right-wing lobbyist: It was ‘thoughtless’ to say I want to ‘destroy public education’

A Utah lobbyist from a pro-school voucher nonprofit is apologizing after being caught on hot mic saying she wants to “destroy public education,” according to The Salt Lake Tribune this week.

In the audio clip, posted by conservative activist Lisa Logan of Utah Parents United over the weekend, Sorensen was asked what would happen if it becomes too expensive to fund both public schools and the school voucher program together — to which Sorensen replied that “we’ll change the way we fund the program” and “take money out of the public schools.

“The bigger the program gets, the larger the army I have that’s going to be pissed off if the program — if something changes in the program,” said Sorensen. “I can’t say this is a recall of public education, even though I want to destroy public education. I can’t say that. The legislature’s going to say that, because they’re just going to be reamed over the coals … they can’t have that PR mess.”

That’s the thing. Homosexuality is legal in this country but gays are still routinely demonized by many Christians.

I was wondering if this was some “Islamic” thing about men shaking hands with women or whatever- or whether this Ambassador was just being a rude asshole.

Then I viewed the whole clip and saw that the guy didn’t even acknowledge the Queen, but just turned and walked right by not even looking at her.

So “rude asshole” it is….

My guess is that the Spanish were notified ahead of time by the Iranian Embassy that he was going to do this. And I expect that this is official policy of the Iranian regime. But yes, it is an disrespectful and boorish move. And qualifies as an official statement by the Iranian regime

Btw, the Spanish appear to have made no effort to protect him from this public embarrassment. So clearly they were out of fucks.

My husband, an Iranian-American, says he gets brownie points with the regime back home for doing that. They are also at war with women.

It looks like a Naval Aircraft Factory N3N Canary:

[Embedded content]

en.wikipedia.org

The N3N would send modern repugs to the fainting couch because it was designed and built by a GOVERNMENT OWNED facility, the Naval Aircraft Factory in Philadelphia. The NAF even produced the engines for it. Yes, a product of socialism.

The Navy Department concluded that it was necessary to build a Navy-owned aircraft factory in order to assure a part of its aircraft supply; to obtain cost data for the department’s guidance in its dealings with private manufacturers; and to have under its own control a factory capable of producing experimental designs.

They also produced a long list of other designs, both in house and licensed from private concerns. The PBN Nomad was an aerodynamically refined version of the privately designed Consolidated PBY Catalina. It was developed in-house at NAF, produced there, and back-licensed to Consolidated as the PBY-6. Most of the Nomads went to the Soviet Union under lend-lease and stayed around long enough to receive the NATO recognition name “Mop.”
Science fiction writers Isaac Asimov, L. Sprague de Camp, and Robert A. Heinlein all worked at the end of NAF. Production closed down at the end of World War II in 1945 and all naval aircraft production has been in the hands of private companies ever since.

lying
adultery
not feeding the poor
not honoring your parents

The Wrath of Khan is on. When they talked in about Genesis, McCoy says “According to myth, the Earth was created in six days.” I wonder if any Christian sites have written about that line.

Yup! That was my assumption as well.

I fully believe that the Iranian Ambassador is doing exactly what the regime expects him to do. And I strongly suspect that the Ambassador is fully on board with it.

The way the M1A1 Abrams tanks are being provided is interesting. Rather than “Drawdown” (aka “PDA” Presidential Drawdown Authority - ie pulling from existing stockpiles) they are being furnished through purchase of new production. (aka USAI - Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative).

This means that delivery will probably be over the next few years, rather than over the next few months like the Leopards. The Ukrainians take this as a statement of planned long term support by the Americans and are very pleased. Also note that the shipment includes more than 31 tanks, recovery vehicles and probably logistics equipment are included.

The assumption is that there are two reasons for USAI-

1. The current Abrams use a special ‘secret’ armor that includes depleted uranium. The tanks provided to foreign governments do not have this. From the US point of view, this keeps the production lines going longer. And may justify increasing production capacity.
2. The Leopards are intended to be used in the next few months of fighting. The Abrams are planned as a follow-on force.

And thread -

The next conference on aiding the Ukrainians is scheduled for February. The expectation is an announcement of supplying of F-16’s to the Ukrainians. (The Ukrainians are reportedly already training on them.)

Heh, I was just reading about the Navy production of the R-760. Hadn’t known about that.

I always preferred the lines of the Boeing/Stearman Model 75, especially civilian ones with a cowled R-985 & a constant speed prop. But I’d not say no to a ride in a Canary ;)

Even if it was all that and a bag of chips, I’d still be hesitant to deploy them when only a handful exist. Given Russia’s approach to armoured warfare to date, all it’s going to take is one of these getting popped by a Javelin and the entire mystique immediately comes to an end. Hard to sell a product to foreign buyers when its combat debut saw it reduced to a mobile camp fire by missiles whose development stretches all the way back to the Reagan years.

Yup, it does sound like the Russian upper echelons are more excited than the ‘stuckees’ who are about to be issued it.

It seems that the boots on the ground are far less enthused about receiving the T-14 Armata than the brass is…..

If any of the relatively few available tanks were deployed, it would likely be most useful for “propaganda,” the MOD argued, saying that Russian commanders “are unlikely to trust the vehicle.”

In an updated intelligence post on Wednesday, the MOD referenced these reports, but suggested Russian forces “were reluctant to accept the first tranche of T-14 allocated to them because the vehicles were in such poor condition.”

It’s a parade tank. I’d be reluctant to bet my life on it, too.

It’s a show room model, same as the Mustang in the lobby of your local Ford dealership. The Russians have been pulling this shit since the Soviet days, when they’d roll “advance prototypes” through Red Square where they knew foreign observers (and spies) would be lined up by the dozens to see the latest in “Soviet super technology.” Then later intel reports would show they were paper tigers, non-functioning or even just tarted up versions of existing models, but by then the propaganda victory had paid dividends by shoring up foreign support while also causing the West to burn more money trying to counter something that didn’t exist.

The T-14 itself sort of stretches back to the Reagan years.

Or at least the general concept of developing an MBT with an unmanned turret with autoloader while the entire crew is in a highly protected capsule in the hull*. It was seen as a potential development in the 1980s.**

The keys to what the T-14 is capable of is really tied to three things I think:
1. Sights/optics/computers - Does it have a suite that allows it to collect and use information on the battlefield to make it effective.

2. APS system - Does it have an Active Protective System that might help protect it from missiles and other threats? Does said system work.***

3. Improved crew survivability over current Russian tanks and their popping turrets. Something western tanks have paid greater attention to since they are professional (and not conscript) armies and thus their tank crews are considered valuable assets worth preserving if possible. Thus the blow-out panels and other things which will mission-kill a tank, but potentially allow the crew to survive.

* - Which some consider a liability since everyone is lower down and can’t see the surroundings as well as being higher up in a turret. One reason the sensor suite will be so important with the vehicle.

** - An old (1985) RPG game called “Twilight: 2000” about a 2000-ish global war includes a Russian/Soviet “T-90” with an unmanned turret, etc. etc. just like a T-14. There is also an M1 Abrams variant nicknamed “Giraffe” that is similar in concept.

*** - The T-14 with a full-blown working APS in Arma 3 is a sort of Death Star. The APS pretty much stops any missile, including Javelins like it has some sort of deflector shield. Not effective against a 120mm APFSDS dart however.

Yeah, the concept has been out there for ages, but the T-14 itself is (as far as we know) a relatively recent design that came about when the T-95 project was scrapped over funding issues. So this is a relatively new tank design and the Russians are certainly playing that fact to the hilt, every presentation and every sales pitch being about how it’s an all-new design with all the latest and greatest bells and whistles. Rolling a few of those into Ukraine is a sales presentation, the hope being that one of them will meet and beat a Western tank in battle so they can make the rounds with their usual list of buyers and declare “BUY OUR TANKS AND YOUR ENEMIES WILL RUN IN FEAR!”

That’s makes the bolded so important, that whole image of the T-14 as all but invincible on a modern battlefield of old and obsolete tanks. If the AUF manage to knock even one out, especially if they do so without using another tank, then any hope of ever selling them outside Russia’s borders will wither on the vine.

re: #59 FFL (GOP Delenda Est)

It was fun playing Twilight 2000 in the National Guard, long after the days of the first version. We expected to die; our hope was simply to take out 8-10 soviet tanks before we died so that we’d slow them down enough for REFORGER to work.

Ironically, when the Germanies reunited we learned that they thought we could move 2 to 3 times more men to Europe in half the time.

In a real way the REFORGER propaganda saved the West…

I liked the first version best but when they were looking for an author for the 3rd edition, I put in a bid to write it as a alt-history timeline. Gorbachev was killed when younger and never lead the Soviet Union. As a result, someone else followed in Andropov’s footsteps instead…

Having been a tanker on the German/Cech boarder once upon a lifetime ago, I’d have liked that chance.

Kind of scary.

A massive, coordinated scheme to sell false and fraudulent nursing degree credentials has been brought down by a joint federal law enforcement operation, Justice Department officials said Wednesday.

As first reported by ABC News, officials said the scheme involved peddling more than $100 million worth of bogus nursing diplomas and transcripts over the course of several years — fake credentials that were sold to help “thousands of people” take “shortcuts” toward becoming licensed, practicing nurses.

Officials said the forged diplomas and transcripts were sold from what had been accredited schools to aspiring nurses, in order to help candidates bypass the qualifying requirements necessary to sit for the national nursing board exam. Although they still had to take the exam, the bogus credentials allowed them to skip vital steps of the competency and licensure process, officials said — and once licensed, those individuals were able to find a job in the health care field.

On the weather front, my corner of northern NJ got as much as a trace of snow yesterday before it was quickly washed away with rain. NYC has gone without measurable snow for nearly an entire year. Temps aren’t looking favorable for snow in the forecast either.

While my back doesn’t mind the lack of snow, it is a problem for reservoirs and aquifers that rely on snowpack to recharge slowly, while rains end up having runoff that goes to sewers and doesn’t have a chance to percolate into aquifers due to impervious surface conditions in urban areas. It’s also a problem for ski areas that rely on snowstorms to get people in the mood to go skiing (even if the areas themselves have snow - manmade or otherwise, they get an uptick in visitors who have snow on the ground by them).

The game looks like money laundering to me, but it’s also right-wing idiocy.

“I do not wish to get any people into financial trouble,” ThePro said. “I just price my game as it feels right to me, which is my right.”

The developer made similar remarks to PCGamesN, and said that the game is about sharing their story and “letting people understand that even if you’re in a bad situation you can work with what you’ve got.” Oh, I’d say it’s about a whole lot more than that.

The Hidden and Unknown begins with an eight-minute-long Star Wars scroll which describes an imbalance between masculine and feminine energy that’s turning Western men infertile due to testosterone depletion, causing women to become increasingly masculine, and which will ultimately lead to the end of humanity. So it turns out this $2,000 philosophy lesson is just the same retrograde gibberish supplement-hawking YouTube masculinity gurus post every day for free. Steam’s transformation into a “platform” really is complete.

I played that $2,000 Steam game, and its ridiculous price is probably for the best (PC Gamer via MSN)

More proof that the EC antiquated bullshit:

2024 will mark a sorry anniversary for the Republican Party: 20 years since President George W. Bush’s 2004 reelection campaign won both the popular and Electoral College votes. That feat has since eluded three GOP presidential nominees and one incumbent.

The critical question is, “Are Republicans capable of nominating a winning ticket to halt this embarrassing losing trend?” I doubt it since rapidly changing demographics are reducing the Republicans’ popular vote count in battleground states.

If the parties were reversed, the GQP would be doing everything in their power to get rid of the EC.

Why can’t I own a Canadian?

Dear Dr. Laura:

Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God’s Law. I have learned a great deal from your show, and try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. End of debate. I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some of the other specific laws and how to follow them:

When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord — Leviticus 1:9. The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?

I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?

I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness — Leviticus 15:19-24. The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.

Leviticus 25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can’t I own Canadians?

I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself?

A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination — Leviticus 11:10, it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don’t agree. Can you settle this?

Leviticus 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here?

Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Leviticus 19:27. How should they die?

I know from Leviticus 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?

My uncle has a farm. He violates Leviticus 19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? — Leviticus 24:10-16. Couldn’t we just burn them to death at a private family affair like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Leviticus 20:14)

I know you have studied these things extensively, so I am confident you can help. Thank you again for reminding us that God’s word is eternal and unchanging.

Your devoted fan,

Jim

Pompous Presstitute…

NBC Reporter Relishes Evicting Tenant in Bleak Instagram Posts

thedailybeast.com

A senior national political reporter at NBC News decided, for some reason, to share his delight at evicting a tenant in a series of mocking Instagram stories on Tuesday, according to a report. Marc Caputo uploaded screen-recordings of texts sent between himself, a property manager, and the tenant occupying a house owned by Caputo in Key West, Defector claims. The messages chronicled the tenant pleading for more time as Caputo refuses, referring to the tenant as a “junkie” and telling the property manager he hopes the tenant “enjoys the sex in prison.” In one post showing a screenshot of a message from a producer asking him to do a live TV broadcast, Caputo allegedly wrote: “…of course TV wants me on in the 2 pm hour. A live eviction wd make for good TV.” When the property manager text Caputo saying the tenant “doesn’t have anywhere to go and nobody has any love for him,” Caputo allegedly replied: “He will have a gun to his head in almost a literal sense because law enforcement will be there.” NBC News declined to comment to Defector about the posts, while Caputo said his actions were “born out of deep frustration that I transmuted into mockery of a terrible situation.”

Remember that amended campaign finance report that George Santos filed a few days ago? Looks like that missing checkbox entry is going to be the least of his problems there. We may be adding forgery of a government document to the stack of items.

From Newsweek:
George Santos Fraudulent Signature Could Be Final Nail in Coffin

George Santos has been accused of listing a man as his campaign financier against his wishes and using his signature without consent, in the latest controversy to hit the New York House Republican.

On Tuesday Santos filed an updated campaign finance report with the Federal Election Commission, in which Thomas Datwyler, an experienced campaign financial consultant, was listed as his new treasurer, with the filing signed with his name.

However, speaking to ABC News Datwyler’s attorney, Derek Ross, said Santos had been informed Datwyler wouldn’t be taking the position on Monday.

Ross said: “On Monday, we informed the Santos campaign that Mr. Datwyler would not be serving as treasurer.

Who the fuck wants to work longer because they want to? Seriously. Point out these people. Name names. There are some people who’ll want to work, because it gives structure and gets them out of their houses (when they weren’t forced to WFH due to covid, that is). But it’s a choice to work longer. GOP wants to make that a pre-requisite - to force people to work longer.

Nearly everyone who is working longer is doing so because they *have* to work longer - to maintain health benefits or because they need the money because SS and their retirement benefits are insufficient to cover their costs, which are dominated by health care costs.

Separating health care coverage from employment would allow people to retire earlier and open up job opportunities for younger folks. GOP doesn’t care, because they want to work you to death anyways.

And to recruit the best talent for their start-up.

I’ve known people who couldn’t hire their preferred former co-workers, because somebody’s wife was diabetic, or their kid had asthma, or they were a cancer survivor in their 40’s. Uninsurable at any price pre-Obamacare.

Really cramps economic development, when a perfectly knowledgeable and qualified recruit has to stay in their dead-end middle management job, because their family’s lives depend on them retaining their benefits.

An asteroid the size of a delivery truck will whip past Earth on Thursday night, one of the closest encounters ever recorded.

Unless it is a taco truck, in which case the Biden-Rothschild-NASA-Soros cabal will launch a special mission to draw it into a trajectory to hit an unsuspecting predominantly white Midwestern community.

I am out of fucks to give: This asshole is guillotine bait.

why do the others have to esssentially amplify the competition?

It is one we need to resolve as it is not going to go away unless we establish a Ministry of Fairness and Balance

Step 2 of the marketing campaign is micro-Crocs that clip onto the mini-Crocs that clip onto regular Crocs.

Step 3 is mega-Crocs that can be used to store regular Crocs in the same way the mini-Crocs clip onto regular Crocs.

The possibilities are endless.

He (or the Iranian government) are just being dicks. If they’re serious about following Islamic law about body contact between unrelated individuals, he can always give a bow then, or do anything that doesn’t require body contact.

I’d suggest doing a namaste. Interestingly enough, the Persian word for (Islamic) prayer, namaz, is a cognate. Though suggesting that an official for a very Muslim government perform an explicitly Hindu hand gesture might cause _some_ heads to explode.

one day it might be addressed and resolved

right now, they arent the public square
so right now there is no inherent right to be on any of them specifically or in general

there are lots of media platforms
sure there are 5 or so popular ones
but there are many many more
and they dont seem to be trying to eradicate their competition
it’s not ‘monopoly’ thats the problem (imo)

you can work as long as you like. there is law that says you must stop.

you can choose not to receive social security benefits. ever. there is no requirement.
(as opposed to ira/pension rmds etc)

of course rick is full of shit, cause no one said this to him.

changing the system in any way (what he’s implying) would do nothing to address this huge problem he thinks we have

The average social security benefit is about 1550 dollars a month. By an interesting coincidence this is also about the current cost of a guillotine.
(It was $1200 three years ago but there has been quite a bit of inflation and all, especially in the cost of lumber.)

They want Democratic buy in for cutting social security, medicare and medicaid, but they aren’t willing to say it out loud because its toxically unpopular, so they have to use euphemisms like “out of control spending.” If I was a blackhearted, soulless Republican, I would demand defunding medicaid expansion.
