I am coming to the belief that the only way to get gun control enacted in these United States would be a live broadcast takeover of Fox News programming with the indiscriminate killing of Faux News staff and on-air personalities, complete with GOP guests being brought down by automatic weapons.

Do I want that to happen? No, definitively NO.

No one should have to die and be a martyr over this issue.

I do wonder if that is what it will take to reach those that continue to leverage this for political advantage. Naturally, in order for the impression to stick, the perpetrators would have to be Q-Anon/MAGA advocates with complaints that Faux News is oppressing them somehow.

It’s not DNS; it’s been resolving the correct IP address. When I did a traceroute, it kept dying at a specific server just upstream of the LGF server. I don’t know if I’m getting filtered or something on the hosting end.

It’s still happening, by the way. If I disconnect my VPN, LGF goes away. If I reconnect it, it works. It seems to be a very clear case of being IP filtered/banned somewhere.

Wednesday morning, url isitdownrightnow.com said my computer and CloudFlare Chicago were fine and that the problem was with LGF. So maybe there’s some complication related to CloudFlare sites.

Ah, you’re behind. Since Wednesday night, I’ve been unable to connect to LGF. After extensive network diagnostics yesterday, and at the end of my list of options, I tried firing up the VPN. That enabled LGF to work, though I don’t like using it as a long—term solution if it can be avoided.

Yeah, I always get a chuckle out of the “logic” that says that humans need “God” to know right from wrong. I tend to hear any such declarations as confessions, that the person arguing such has a lot of skeletons in their closet that are ready to come dancing out if the latch on the door ever breaks. Given all the cases we hear of annually of “men of the cloth” being caught engaged in everything from theft to infidelity to murder, there’s certainly plenty of arguments that being holy doesn’t bar you from being evil.

Quoting Tracey Harris: The difference between me and your god is if your god sees a little child being raped, he says I’ll punish you later. If I see a little child being raped, I’ll do what I can to help the child. That makes me more moral than your god.

The only thing downstream of your ISP is your router. It’s their modem and your router. Or it’s their modem and their router. Use The Force. Good luck.

And I have it on specious terms that our so-called ‘illustrious’ host has been, at times, lustrious.

I’ve been using Google DNS exclusively for over a year now. Again, it’s not the DNS. The lookup has been returning the correct IP address the whole time. My packets are literally getting lost in space just upstream of the host.

We got an inch or so of snow overnight Thursday, so I cleared that off Friday morning when the temperature was 30 °F (around -1 C); by last night, the temperature had fallen to 0 °F (-17.8 C). I was never a phone phreaker but it was a REVELATION to me when I discovered that you could dial numbers by pressing the hang-up button just right. Like, instead of dialing “5” on the rotary dial you could just press the hang-up switch 5 times in rhythmic succession and get the same result. It was totally useless but it definitely made me curious about how the phone system actually worked.

My payphone story has already been told here, but I’m going to do it again, because you can’t stop me.

In my college dorm, the pay phones were in the stairwell, 2 to each of the 3 floors. (Only ‘the rich kid’ had a phone in his room.) Calls would come in, some nice person would answer and find out who they were looking for. It was me this one time.

Caller: I’m calling for David
Me: We have six Davids on this floor.
Caller: David White
Me: OK, now we’re down to two. Do you want Black David White or White David White?
Caller: Heh. Black David White.

I didn’t have the words for it then, but I think the feeling was, ‘Oh my. The infrastructure is vulnerable.’

It wasn’t always useless. There were dial locks on some phones, and you could still call by tapping in the number.

The way it worked was that rotary phones would break the dial tone X number of times as the dial spun, and the telephone exchange would pick up on those “pulses” and translate that into the number being dialed. The rotary-to-touchtone converters would do this conversion and then translate the number into the corresponding tone to send over the line.

That article was several years old. There was an update to that story in 2020:

Cop who told driver not to record police demoted
(WCBI-TV)

WILMINGTON, N.C. — When police stopped an Uber driver to detain his passenger last month, he immediately turned on his cellphone and started recording.

The officers demanded he turn off his phone, citing a reportedly non-existent state law, but what they didn’t know was that Jesse Bright was a defense attorney - moonlighting as a driver to make some extra cash in an effort to pay off his student loans. Now, one of the officers involved has been demoted.

Local news outlets report Wilmington police Sgt. Kenneth Becker was demoted and hit with a 5 percent pay cut. Becker has been with the department 17 years.

You can do it with a touch-tone telephone as well.

Local telephone calls from a public phone used to cost 10¢.

Now they cost 50¢.

We’d spin a penny clockwise in the payphone nickel slot with your right thumb, and as it dropped, press the the coin release with your right palm.

Do that twice, and make a phone call for $.02.

Financial expert Dave Ramsey says Christians who own property as landlords should not feel guilty about raising rental prices - provided they aren’t overcharging, and they work with tenants in difficult situations.

“This idea that you have to equate Christian and kindness with not having good marketplace experience is not true,” Ramsey said last week while answering a question on his program, The Ramsey Show.

Circa 1989, I got in parental hot water by dialing long-distance BBS’s to the tune of $400 one month.

Fun fact: in those days, it was common for the BBS sysop to “voice-verify” you, which meant they called you on the phone and that somehow satisfied their questions. One of the BBSs I called when I was calling every possible BBS was “Brazos de Dios”, which just so happened to be the BBS of the Branch Davidians in Waco, TX, where I lived at the time. I got “voice-verified” by a guy whose name I CANNOT REMEMBER TO SAVE MY LIFE, but who was present at the ATF raid and subsequent shit-show. Wayne-something, or something-Wayne. Maybe. I don’t remember.

A day out with dad.

Wife and I were going to the valley (as we call it here, the largest close city to us other than Youngstown OH). So I asked dad if he wanted to come along and we could grab some lunch/dinner. He has been declining for a few years with Alzheimer’s. So after we finally talked him into changing from his PJ bottoms and T-shirt (which he was insisting was fine to go out wearing) to outside clothes we headed south.

I took his dog out back behind the pole barn by the out buildings to do its business before we left and snapped this shot from his backyard.

We had a good time. The Alzheimer’s hasn’t affected his sense of being goofy. Here is my wife and him getting out of the car at the Mexican restaurant we ate at. I told them to stop and look back at me and dad did this.

do NOT accept the premise of the question

The person asking is an atheist. She is trying to see who will come out and say “no.”

The only thing that protects atheists’ rights to run for office and serve as witnesses in trials from state constitutions like Maryland and Pennsylvania is a Supreme Court decision. I imagine there are already Republican lawmakers trying to get a case in front of the Supreme Court to get that decision overturned.

When conservatives (especially pastors) start talking about children’s sex lives or education, you call them a pervert.

This person deserves all the upvotes.

Sex ed classes are a helluva lot safer for children than churches.

i said above change sex ed to any other class - english, science, math whatever, and you’d get the same response from the school

you’re not allowed to be in the school

then again they’d probably think the school is ‘hiding’ all kinds of things in english, science, math, whatever

Our schools here permit adults to sit in on such classes, though they have to request it and make an appointment. That was the same when I went to school in Michigan.

On a good note, nearly everyone in that thread is calling the pastor a pervert.

That word needs to come out more often when conservatives creep on children.

I’ve thought about the idea that newspapers have seen a precipitous decline in science and technology articles (on basic science and technology, not some whiz bang new invention). I used to eat up the Sunday Detroit Free Press science section when I was a kid.

Since my regional newspaper is trying to expand its reach, I’m considering writing a letter to the newspaper suggesting they add a short section (might only be two or four pages). They don’t even necessarily need a science journalist, though that would help: They could run articles from wire services or science outlets to fill in.

Yup - the kind of storm where my kids look at me like I’m bugnuts-insane when I go out Sunday evening or Monday morning to shovel. “Dad! It’s still snowing!” Those grasshoppers will learn someday. Until then, they have to listen to lectures on the pros and cons of different types of shovels and different shoveling techniques based on conditions. I’m just glad we don’t get the windblown cement-hard snow drifts here like back home in ND (we’d get those drifts sometimes even if it wasn’t snowing).

Driving through ground blizzards with blue sky above made for some interesting drives once I got to college, especially if those ground blizzards were creating finger drifts on the highway.

Has Earth’s inner core stopped its strange spin? (Nature, January 23, 2023)

Thousands of kilometres beneath your feet, Earth’s interior might be doing something very weird. Many scientists think that the inner core spins faster than the rest of the planet — but sometime in the past decade, according to a study, it apparently stopped doing so.

“We were quite surprised,” say Yi Yang and Xiaodong Song, seismologists at Peking University in Beijing who reported the findings today in Nature Geoscience1.

The results could help to shine light on the many mysteries of the deep Earth, including what part the inner core plays in maintaining the planet’s magnetic field and in affecting the speed of the whole planet’s rotation — and thus the length of a day. But they are just the latest instalment in a long-running effort to explain the inner core’s unusual rotation, and might not be the final word on the matter.

“I keep thinking we’re on the verge of figuring this out,” says John Vidale, a seismologist at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. “But I’m not sure.”
