Rather than pay attention to each specific depraved thing Republicans do, I find it’s a real time saver to just assume Republicans are the scum of the earth, and that everything they say and do is villainous.

The error rate here is negligible.

Interesting. You may remember that Russia uses trains to carry ammunition from its depots to the combat zone ammo dumps. However HIMARS strikes forced the Russians to move their combat zone ammo dumps back quite a distance.

Apparently, what they do now is go to the distant ammo dump, pack up a truck with ammunition, haul it to near the frontline and then dump it by the roadside. The combat unit then has to go, find it, load it back up on a truck, and take it back to the unit.

There are some downsides to this method-

We could be looking at over a foot of wet, heavy snow late Friday through Saturday. This is the kind of snow that always leads to power outages due to broken tree limbs breaking power lines. I have to hit the store early tomorrow. It will be a madhouse as people try to stock up on the way home from work.

Around here, we’ve made massive investments in burying our power lines. There are still some aerials around, but our power is far more reliable than it was when we moved in 13 years ago. I probably should check the generator this spring and see if I can even get it to run.

Yeah, I don’t understand it. But we also have relatively fewer homes with full basements here due to granite. Maybe that has something to do with it? I honestly don’t know. It could be done. Blasting granite is a big industry here, so it’s not like we don’t have experience or tools. In our townhouse community there was a major honing of trees and limbs last summer (we live basically in a forest). Hopefully that will help.

I suppose that’s a thing. Around here, everything is sand or relatively soft clay, since the water table is so high. (And yet, most houses have full basements; see, “Alley, Tornado.”) It’s relatively inexpensive for us to bury thousands of miles of cables.

Not necessarily a Hail Mary, more part of the standard playbook. You always ask for it. There may or may not be a good reason for it, but if you don’t ask for it, you can’t appeal on it.

Yes, I think most homes in central Illinois had basements. It added to the hurt when mobile homes always get the brunt of the storms. Our problem was that we lived just where a small underground (actually above ground through the University of Illinois, which flooded regularly) creek passed under the street in front of our house. It wasn’t until I was a teenager that my dad finally installed a pump strong enough to keep the water out of the basement. So many nights I was awakened by dad getting us all up to bail out the basement.

Yep. Basically, you have to be able to go to the appeals court and say, “We tried to do X, Y, and Z before the district court, but were denied. We believe that denial was wrong, and here’s why.” If you don’t ask for the mistrial, you can’t later appeal and ask the appeals court to just give you a mistrial. They have to have a reason to tell the district court to reverse its ruling denying a mistrial.

Right wing fear of gummint gun grabbing really started during the Civil Rigths era, especially with the Gun Control Act of 1968, which had actually been prompted by the assassination of President Kennedy but which paranoid bigots claimed was designed to disarm them and make them helpless prey for newly enfranchised blacks. This, suburban loot and white women for the taking, was supposed to be a payoff to the black community for its support of liberal candidates.

If a far-off country ending in -stan has a bunch of troops and drones, and periodically some random people die because they were near a “terrorist” (because the intel is good), if you’re inside the US border that’s technically “government so small you can’t see the it.”

I’d snarklessly propose that it has always been the case that “small government” has always incorporated the premise that there’s just…people that shouldn’t have services or franchise or dignity or rights. Government “waste” isn’t policies that have no efficacy, “waste” is failing to sort citizens.

The fantasy is not that government is small, it’s that it’s operation is invisible to the designated-superior people regardless of its size. It’s the promise of a tiered society in which bad kinds of people are policed, and means-tested, and punished; good kinds of people are left alone and rewarded.

I’m running the demo ski tent on Saturday at Eldora Mountain Ski Resort. It’s World Telemark Day, a day we half-a-binding-half-a-brain crowd celebrate our peculiar yet oddly beautiful way of skiing. I predict I will hear these two sentences the most while I’m up there: “Do you sell your demos?” and “These bindings are really stiff!”

I really need to rewrite the LGF CSS files. They’re a giant mess, evolved from the primordial ooze of web prehistory, and showing their age.

So much of the crud could be eliminated by getting rid of all those goddamned floats.

I always hated float.

hi

I ran into an interesting article over at Only Sky, the first of a series of three, regarding the Inquisition after the Crusades against the Cathars.

The Catholic Church sought to root out heretics who deviated from orthodoxy: In practice this meant they were looking for Cathars and Jews. What they weren’t looking for was atheists: A peasant questioning the existence of God whilst toiling for a feudal lord in a field was not a threat to the Church. An aristocrat or church grandee who deviated from the norms was such a threat.

Nevertheless, entirely by accident they caught a few atheists or doubters.

One Inquisitor took the unusual step of having a notary swear in and write down all his investigations into heretical matters. Those records are now at the Vatican, but only a few had been translated from Middle French to Modern English (regarding Cathars and Jews).

Now comes a few new translations of those documents regarding the atheists he uncovered. None were executed or jailed, but were forced to wear a double yellow cross on their clothes for the rest of their lives to mark their “shame.”

The first is posted here: ‘How is it possible that I cannot believe!’ An atheist in the Inquisitor’s net (February 24, 2023)

Meet Aude of Merviel, an atheist accidentally caught in the net of a 14th-century Inquisitor, in her own words

We got lucky. The squall line fell apart when it came off the Balcones Fault Complex. We got a gust of at least 60 mph, but squat for rain, hail, or power outages.

Lucky! Several tornado warnings north of us around Georgetown.

Do you suppose it’s all the mentions of Ukraine and Russia that prompted that particular advert?

Gizmondo, today

Last week, Texas introduced a bill that would make it illegal for internet service providers to let users access information about how to get abortion pills. The bill, called the Women and Child Safety Act, would also criminalize creating, editing, or hosting a website that helps people seek abortions.

If the bill passes, internet service providers (ISPs) will be forced to block websites “operated by or on behalf of an abortion provider or abortion fund.” ISPs would also have to filter any website that helps people who “provide or aid or abet elective abortions” in almost any way, including raising money.

We have a good storm cellar here, actually built as a fallout shelter right after the Cuban missile crisis. It has seen a lot more action in the tornado mode, obviously. In 1968, a tornado wrecked one of the barns and took the roof off the main house, all while the then owners plus several neighbors and passers-by were hiding in the shelter.

Catholic bishops sound ‘alarm’ on Equal Rights Amendment, saying it will hurt religious freedom (Yahoo!, March 1, 2023)

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) published a letter this week warning Senate members against supporting the revival of the Equal Rights Amendment.

The Catholic prelates voiced serious concern Monday regarding a motion in the Senate that would remove the decades-passed deadline for the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) — a proposed amendment to the constitution that would guarantee “equal rights under the law” to all Americans regardless of sex.

“We are writing to you to express our alarm with a number of far-reaching consequences that will arise from the proposed Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), and its negative impacts to the common good and to religious freedom,” the USCCB wrote. “We strongly urge you to oppose it and any resolution attempting to declare it ratified.”

When it comes to Catholic bishops who whine about the ERA.

People who shuffle pedophiles from parish to parish and cover up their crimes have no moral authority to dictate anything…except that they should be in jail where they belong.
