Fascism Goes Mainstream — Today is all about the Fascism Files. The legacy news media has finally started reporting on Trump’s fascism. Trump echoes Hitler by calling his political enemies “vermin.” Trump allies are pre-screening loyalists to fill 54,000 government jobs, all intended to let Trump do whatever he wants, including remaining in office. Trump circulates post calling for citizen’s arrest of Letitia James and Judge Engoron. Jenna Ellis says Trump never intended to leave office, and Sidney Powell describes what Trump’s staffers told him about the election. Trump’s plans for camps and deportations. Ohio Republicans are attempting to stop Issue 1. QAnon insurrectionist plans to run for Congress. With Buzz Burbank, music by Circe Link & Christian Nesmith, Nick Lutsko, and more!

DJT has already told his supporters that “protecting” ballot boxes is more important than voting. This message is addressed to people who own a large share of America’s guns and live in open-carry and concealed-carry states.

What do we expect such a message to result in?

So, I have C-SPAN open in another window to check on the progress of the House’s vote on the CR to continue funding the government, and weirdly, Speaker Johnson appears to be absent (as do what seems to be something like 90% of the members): they’re blithering away about amendments to the Resolution (which seem, mostly, to have been stuck in by Andy Biggs (AZ) - so hopefully, will be dismissed out of hand).

When I was a kid this was the time of the year when you could go to Kaufmann’s department store in Pittsburgh and get those special Hazelnut Thumbrprint Cookies.

Sadly Macy’s gobbled up Kaufmann’s and eventually closed all of their stores.

But the recipe for those delicious morsels lives on…

Ingredients
1 cup hazelnut flour
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup whole-wheat pastry flour
1 orange, zested
1/4 teaspoon salt
8 tablespoons unsalted butter, room temperature
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon orange juice, plus more, to taste
1/2 cup chocolate-hazelnut spread
flaky salt, to taste, for serving

Step 1 -
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
Step 2 -
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Step 3 -
In a large bowl, whisk the hazelnut flour, the all-purpose flour, the pastry flour, the orange zest, and the salt together.
Step 4 -
In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, add the butter and the sugar and beat, scraping the sides as needed, on medium-high speed until it is light and fluffy, about 4 minutes.
Step 5 -
With the mixer still on medium-high, add the vanilla and 1 teaspoon of the orange juice.
Step 6 -
Reduce the mixer speed to low.
Step 7 -
Add the flour mixture, 1/2 cup at a time, to the butter mixture and mix, scraping the sides as needed, until it is incorporated and comes together into a soft dough. If the dough is too dry, add the extra orange juice, 1 teaspoon at a time, and mix until the desired consistency is reached.
Step 8 -
Roll the dough into balls, about 1 tablespoon per cookie, and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
Step 9 -
Use your thumb to make a 3/4-inch-wide indentation in the center of each ball, ensuring your thumb does not touch the bottom of the pan. If the edges of the cookies start to crack, use your fingers to gently smooth the edges together.
Step 10 -
Bake the cookies until they are lightly puffed on top and golden on the bottom, about 12-15 minutes.
Step 11 -
Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
Step 12 -
Spoon the chocolate-hazelnut spread into a pastry bag and evenly pipe it into the indentation of each cookie.
Step 13 -
Serve the cookies lightly sprinkled with the flaky salt.

most of the time these “debates” don’t actually have many members present. They show up when a vote is called, cast their vote, and leave. This might be one of those vote-a-thon situations because Biggs is apparently trying to defund every agency one-by-one.

Including adolescent males in their 30s, as the owner of the fitness place I used to go was back when the first Captain Marvel movie came out. He wasn’t going to go see it because the hero was a woman.

Now, imagine a movie where the main characters are a white, an African-American, and a Pakistani-American.

I liked the movie, but except for the very end and the end credit, the movie suffered from not having a bigger story to tie into. Kind of like when the creator of QC doesn’t have an idea of what to do with his characters.

This is a big coup for the GOP:

Univision, the Spanish language news giant, shifts its approach to Trump

The reversal has shocked Democrats — who are preparing a massive ad campaign to brand Trump as hostile to Latino interests — and some journalists inside Univision, who think that the past week has demonstrated the heavy hand of their new corporate bosses. The Mexican media company Grupo Televisa, which has long fostered a close relationship with Mexican political leaders, merged with Univision in 2021.

In a bipartisan vote, the House has passed Speaker Mike Johnson’s plan to avert a government shutdown just days ahead of a Friday deadline.

The vote passed 336-95. The bill needed a two-thirds majority to pass.

In his first test as the newly-appointed speaker, Johnson pitched a two-step government plan that he described as a “laddered CR” or continuing resolution that would keep the government funded at 2023 levels.

Johnson leaned heavily on his Democratic colleagues after dozens of Republicans opposed his plan.

The bill now goes on to the Senate for approval. Senate leaders have indicated they support the bill.

And Rush, which is a point of discussion for me, never really liked them.

And I guess they cannot help it that 2112 was another one of those albums you could not escape in the dormitories at Indiana University in 1976…you could walk up and down the corridors of McNutt Hall at any time of day or night and hear it coming from any number of towel-stuffed doorways.

California mails everyone a ballot now and every county has drop boxes you can slip them into. You can even check online to see if it has been picked up and processed.

yup and you dont have to wait till election day

this is what i’m saying. what are they gonna ‘protect’?

and will mail in ballots, the controls over batch processing that stuff is also quite rigorous.

The more I think about it, the more I think that the dog whistle is for someone to show up at a polling place with an AR-15 on election day. Which, sadly, we can’t exactly take off the table.

Michigan court decision says Trump can stay on the ballot

Similar to the Minnesota ruling, the Court said the primary is different than the general and that the question of him being on the general election ballot is not ripe. However, I am not really a fan of this bit:

The inappropriateness of the judicial branch resolving these questions, tendered by Section 3ofthe Fourteenth Amendment, includes that the judicial action of removing a candidate from the presidential ballot and prohibiting them from running essentially strips Congress of its ability to “by a vote of two-thirds of each House, remove such a disability.” Also, it takes the decision of whether there was a rebellion of insurrection and whether or not someone participated in it from the Congress, a body made up of elected representatives of the people of every state in the nation, and gives it to but one single judicial officer, a person who no matter how well intentioned, evenhanded, fair and learned, cannot in any manner or form possibly embody the represented qualities of every citizen of the nation-as does the House of Representatives and the Senate. Nor is that judicial officer provided the “power to enforce, by appropriate legislation, the provisions of this article,” Section 5.

The Courts, it seems, do not want to actually touch this issue. I can sort of understand that. But I wonder if Barack Obama, or Bill Clinton, or George W Bush decided to try and get on a primary ballot, if the courts would not bar them from doing so. It’s the same legal principle at play.

I did a little reading and found out that many, many polling places in multiple states were worried about people with firrearms showing up - in 2020. Even Texas does not allow guns within 100 feet of a polling place unless it is by an officer or the polling judge. It is a felony to attempt to bypass the rule. Many states put an armed officer as a sargeant at arms to ‘welcome’ people and prevent intimidation.

And this is something that the people responsible for securing our polling places think about a lot, spend time watching social media about and make detailed plans about what to do. So I don think people will be surprised by any half-assed approches Trumpers take.

Unless it is a bigger conspiracy than we think ;-) But then again as seen by the revelations of what they plan to do if they win or the leak of the profer tapes,, they cannot keep their mouths shut.

In one of our county’s deep rural precincts (firehouse) an armed sheriff’s deputy dropped by a couple times during the long day. In a sense that could be reassuring, but with our state’s history it could also be seen as intimidating in itself. Basically depends on whose side is carrying.

I can’t help but think Trumper’s have a plan. The orange man himself is spouting what he intends to do once he’s president again. In my mind there should be millions of R’s who will not vote for him because of who he is and all we’ve learned since 1/6. Should be a resounding “D” victory. Yeah. Most states allow officers to carry even if off duty. But they are not allowed to intimidate by pulling the gun out or displaying it. In many states, they have lawyers on call for citizens to complain about electioneering and intimidation. These people have shown that they take their jobsseriously, even wen Republican.I would not be surprised at all to find that there are detailed plans on what to do if someone shows up with an AR15.

Now whether those plans are effective is another thin but itis not too likely they will be completely surprised by a new tactic unthought of. But of course, a crazy prson could likely stillwreck havoc but it would unlikely be asystemic attack.

While literally true in terms of the written law, but when I was living in small town America, I’d rather have my own rifle in my truck than trust that Deputy Bubba believes in the same Constitution that I once swore to defend. Now in a middling sized city I feel a little more comfortable. My PPK/S carried in a good inside the waist holster with with a vest over top and a spare mag in my pocket (and a current CCW permit) will suffice to keep my paranoia about the right wing in check.

This is why I do not believe that many companies based on ad revenue to survive will actually survive. They care about their advertisers, not their users. They further the enshittification of their platform by rent-eeking behavior rather than helping their users.

Cheap for my family (the tax payers foot the bill for the work I did in the 80’s & 90’s) & easy peasy on everyone. Plus Episcopalian chaplains are easy to find. Tell him to use rite one and it’ll sound just like a funeral in a thousand B westerns… Ashes to ashes my friends 😈

Yes, it made news in the Atheist Youtuber circles.

Ali is doing the cultural-Christianity bit.

Many people who self-declare as “Christians” are really doing the cultural-Christianity bit.

Ali’s arguments are what justified the various Crusades. Now, they were really about riches and power, like all wars. But the public justification was to save Christianity.

I have never met Ali, and will not attempt to diagnose her.

It does strike me that she did not properly account for the programming of her youth, though. She knew she was abused and good for her for recognizing that and acting on it.

But as children we are trained to think in certain ways, and god-thinking is one of them.

Anyone who claims they are upholding “the Judeo-Christian tradition” are throwing up a non-entity.

It’s not a real thing in history.

It’s an assertion made in today’s culture wars.

Christianity is what happened when Jewish apocalyptic types ran into trouble with Rome.

By nature, Christianity is an end-times religion.

And what will Ali do when her newly reunited Christian empire starts killing witches, which the Law of God demands?

It was all nature/outdoor activity locations. My father liked to fish and hike. And also got into sailing as well. So ashes ended up on top of at least three mountains in Oregon, New York, and Pennsylvania. Two oceans. A couple of rivers and creeks as well.

Topped off by the container that was interred was a nice rosewood humidor he had owned. He’d also smoked for years but did eventually quit in the 1980s.

We buried half of my mom’s ashes with my dad in Fort Logan Natl Cemetery. Some of the rest got scattered along the Bear Lake Trail in Rocky Mountain National Park — five kids, two sons-in-law, a bunch of grandkids and two great-grands walking the trail in a snowstorm on June 24th. We had to scrounge every mitten in the house to equip everyone. I only made it a short way, then me and my lousy knees and my sweet husband had to limp back to the car. The rest of the crew made it, even the two-year-olds.

One of the granddaughters hiked up Flattop in Rocky Man Natl to scatter a few on one of Mom’s favorite trails.

One of my sisters took a few to Glacier Natl Park in Montana where Mom used to go as a kid growing up in Great Falls in the 30’s.

Another sister took a pinch to Hawaii where Mom had had a chance to go during WWII and never made it, always regretted it.

They asked us if we wanted to add a short inscription to her side of the headstone in Fort Logan — it says “HEADED FOR THE HILLS”

Maybe so, but even rejecting it hasn’t prevented Ali from producing copious amounts of fecal matter. I suppose it’s lost on her that of the ideologies she takes such pains to dismiss/reject, it’s that Western “woke-ism” (even though she conveniently ignores defining exactly what it is) that carries the greatest level of tolerance for criticism. As she should well know, too public a rejection of Islamism, can, in the wrong environment, end up separating one from one’s head: too-open critics of “The System” in Russia or China might find themselves relocated to some insalubrious prison camp; and that “Christian” societal framework she seems to admire so much is only removed from Inquisitions and witch-burnings by a relatively short timespan (and a notable application of “woke” reformism in the last couple of centuries). Whereas here in moral-fiber-deficient Wokeistan, the worst that might happen to her is what? Troll attacks online…?

The one Hollywood mainly used was the one from 1892, though 1928’s became popular too. The one you have was the revision from 1928, slightly tweaked in 1945, that was then ignored until 1979 when the new book set off serious culture wars that are pretty much over (time won - the young’s don’t remember anything else 😉 ). Essentially the ‘79 book has the 28 stuff (rite one) and modern language versions (rite two). Almost no one pays attention to rite one anymore except in the break away “Anglican” churches and they’ll use that 1945 book you were given instead anyway (essentially indistinguishable).

Hope that made sense; had a couple of brews.

Ali is speaking the language of the colonial project: a synthesis of Christian virtue ethics, “Enlightenment” values, and nationalism that coincidentally create a license…nay, a moral imperative…to impose hegemony.

When she talks about the brutality of China or Russia contrasted with the past of the “West” it’s with the full understanding that said past was brutal…that brutality was simply directed outward, towards the zone of un-people, and thus does not count.

This has always been the paradox of the New Atheists: to defend Western values we must create an exception to the Western values such that Wrong People can be controlled and punished. It’s a classic conservative argument—people are not equal, therefore morality must include position—and the borders they set of in-group and out-group rapidly just became the borders of the global north.

This is yet another socialism of fools, but it’s also that weird thing Lady Macbeth thing that the global north does where you’re not supposed to follow-through and look at who benefits and who does the maintenance on all these backwards, poor, religion-infested places.

You know, exactly the way that collective guilt for 9/11 could span a billion Muslims but not several thousand US intelligence apparatchiks who gave a bunch of money and training to fundamentalists because the alternative was too much feminism and secularism in MENA.

And I guess they cannot help it that 2112 was another one of those albums you could not escape in the dormitories at Indiana University in 1976…you could walk up and down the corridors of McNutt Hall at any time of day or night and hear it coming from any number of towel-stuffed doorways.

My law school cubicle was 2112. I loved it for the Rush album.

poor guy… lucky more of those early risk-takers weren’t lost… we had a good friend who pursued a very risky life-style in the 80s… and he died in the 90s. our friend drove us nuts, continuing long after he knew he had it, especially with very young men. my husband stayed in contact, but I just could not bear that behavior: it was the same as manslaughter, in my book. It just made me ill when he would drop by with a “young friend”. I just wanted to vomit.

‘Blatantly unconstitutional’: Nikki Haley ripped for ‘fascist’ proposal to outlaw anonymity on social media

alternet.org

During a Tuesday, November 14 appearance on Fox News, 2024 GOP presidential hopeful Nikki Haley made a proposal that has been drawing a great deal of vehement criticism online: abolishing anonymous social media accounts.

The former South Carolina governor and ex-U.S. ambassador to the United Nations described anonymous social media accounts as a “national security threat” and proposed that platforms like X, formerly Twitter, and Facebook be required to verify the identities of all users.

“When I get into office,” Haley told Fox News, “the first thing we have to do — social media companies, they have to show America their algorithm. Let us see why they’re pushing what they’re pushing.”

Haley argued that her proposal, if carried out, would promote greater “civility” online. But her critics slammed it as a recipe for authoritarianism.

One of those critics was far-right Turning Point USA leader Charlie Kirk, a Donald Trump loyalist.

Kirk, on Twitter, posted, “Nikki Haley says ‘every person on social media should be verified by name’ for the sake of ‘national security.’ Nice try, Nikki. Anonymous speech is a core part of free speech — which the founders would know, since many of them (including Alexander Hamilton and James Madison) wrote anonymously.”

MAGA Republican Vivek Ramaswamy, who is running against Nikki in the 2024 GOP presidential primary, tweeted, “@NikkiHaley is *openly* pushing for the government to use private tech companies to censor speech. This is a flagrant violation of the Constitution and straight out of the Democrats’ playbook. Any politician who thinks it’s OK for the government to use the private sector as its censorship bureau shouldn’t be allowed anywhere near the White House.”

Maria Bartiromo barreled through warnings to boost ‘wackadoodle’ lies

Well that’s her Standard Operating Procedure!

rawstory.com

A new book claims that Fox Business host Maria Bartiromo single-handedly gave birth to the “Big Lie” that Donald Trump used to justify his efforts to overturn his election loss and which cost Fox Corp. nearly $800 million.

Fox boss Rupert Murdoch decided to send the vanquished president a message - you lost, get over it - within an hour of Fox News projecting on Nov. 7, 2020, that Joe Biden had won the election by directing an editorial to be published in the New York Post giving point-by-point directions on managing the defeat, according to excerpts of Brian Stelter’s new book Network of Liespublished by Politico.

“Get Rudy Giuliani off TV,” the editorial advised. “Ask for the recounts you are entitled to, wish Biden well, and look to the future.”

Fox News Media CEO Suzanne Scott told Lachlan Murdoch she would circulate that editorial around the network, and the hosts of “Fox & Friends Weekend” were told Nov. 8 to stay away from election fraud claims, but Bartiromo took to the airways immediately afterward with an episode devoted to baseless conspiracy theories about Dominion Voting Systems - which came from a highly questionable source.

“This episode is worth analyzing in detail because Bartiromo’s source was so unhinged; because the segment foreshadowed months of smears; and because it provided a predicate for the ‘Big Lie’ that Trump continues to promote to this day,” Stelter wrote. “Six in 10 Republican voters say they believe the 2020 election was ‘stolen’ from Trump. But ‘stolen’ how? One day after Biden became president-elect, Bartiromo used her Fox megaphone to tell a story that Trump and the heartbroken MAGA base embraced, to the detriment of Trump’s party and the country writ large.”

David Clark, the Fox executive who oversaw weekend programming, warned Bartiromo the day before not to book Rudy Giuliani due to his “bizarre” conspiracy theories about the network allegedly aiding Biden, but the host ignored him and asked her producer Abby Grossberg to warn the former New York City mayor not to bash Fox News on air.

“It’s also a pretape,” Grossberg told Bartiromo, “so if it goes completely off the rails, we could always try to cut.”

But the episode’s other guest, attorney Sidney Powell, proved to be even more problematic.

“What they didn’t know was that Powell’s Dominion smear was rooted in a ludicrous email from one random, especially unglued Trump fan,” Stelter wrote.

Dominion’s legal team reviewed hundreds of thousands of emails during their ultimately successful defamation suit - which cost Fox News $787.5 million - and found those costly claims were based on a single email dated Nov. 7, 2020, from an unhinged Trump fan named Marlene Bourne, who sent a message called “Election Fraud Info” to Powell, Fox host Lou Dobbs and pro-Trump activist Tom Fitton, and then forwarded by Powell to Bartiromo.

“Parts of the three-page email were, by Bourne’s own admission, ‘wackadoodle,’” Stelter wrote. “She claimed to be ‘internally decapitated’; she described having visions; she said, ‘The Wind tells me I’m a ghost.’ She said some things that were easily debunked: For example, that Roger Ailes and other ‘owners of the major US media outlets secretly huddle most days to determine how best to portray Mr. Trump as badly as possible.’ It was a supremely well-kept secret, indeed, since Ailes died in 2017 — and he hadn’t owned Fox, he’d just acted like he did in his CEO role. The email also asserted that former Supreme Court justice Antonin Scalia ‘was purposefully killed at the annual Bohemian Grove camp … during a weeklong human hunting expedition.’”

Instead of deleting the missive and ignoring it, Bartiromo instead sent it to Grossberg and then replied to Powell, indicating she had spoken to Eric Trump, the ex-president’s son, and described Bourne’s email as “very imp info.”

“Bourne’s ‘wackadoodle’ email was germane for two reasons: It was chock-full of equally loony claims about Dominion, and it was the only message referencing Dominion in Bartiromo’s and Grossberg’s inboxes prior to Powell’s live shot on their show,” Stelter wrote. “In other words, it was Patient Zero in the coming contagion that would infect all of Fox and the GOP.”

Pity. Yet another story about a company I used to like.

At REI, a Progressive Company Warns That Unionization Is Bad for Vibes

Last year, during a mandatory meeting of employees at a Manhattan REI store, a manager ticked off a list of what he called “serious red flags” about the union trying to organize the company’s employees. The Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU) has suffered a decline in membership and revenue, he said, which should be concerning. What’s more, he said, “they’ve allocated barely any revenue to social impact,” according to an audio recording of the gathering reviewed by Bloomberg Businessweek. “Compare that to our $6.3 million to nonprofit partners in 2021 alone.”

Some employees found that criticism strange: In their eyes, the union itself is a social impact organization, one that helps advance the sort of values that drew them to work at REI in the first place. “We are living the co-op values by doing this,” says one of them, Claire Chang. “Coming together to unionize as workers is 100% aligned with what REI says they are.”

Employees at eight of REI’s roughly 180 US stores, starting with the Manhattan one, have voted to unionize over the past two years with the RWDSU or other chapters of the United Food & Commercial Workers, seeking a say in issues such as safety, scheduling and benefits. But—like their newly unionized counterparts at amazon.com, Apple and Starbucks—none has gotten close to negotiating an actual union contract with the company. On Nov. 14, the UFCW filed cases with the US National Labor Relations Board, accusing REI of refusing to negotiate fairly at stores across the country. It’s the latest volley in an escalating dispute in which each side accuses the other of violating the humane values that are core to the retailer’s brand.

So, earlier today, I was coming back home and I found me one of these…

Canon Prima Super 105X camera 35mm film

…in the dumpster. So I thought to myself, “What the hell” and took it upstairs.

I reckon the original owner threw it away because the battery door latch, a small plastic piece that slides in behind the battery door, was broken. However, that was an easy fix. A little superglue (and steady hands) and the piece went back together with no problem.

Found a local store that sells the battery for about $3 bucks, a CR123A three volt lithium cell, popped in it - and it all seems to be working fine. There was a still a roll of film in the camera with about 12 exposures remaining, so I took a couple photos to make sure the shutter was working properly.

We still have a one-hour photo shop here in Ostrava, so I’ll run through the rest of the roll, then see how it turns out. Hopefully, there’s nothing hinky on the previous photos (that thought occurred to me, LOL).

Today’s electoral-vote mentions that Trump could fire his lawyers as a delay strategy, and asks: “Then what happens? Would the judge refuse to let him fire the lawyers?”

The answer to that question, surprisingly, can be yes! Lawyers must ask leave of the court to be dismissed from a case. Judge Chutkan could absolutely say, “Aw, hell nah, you guys aren’t getting off that easy, you will stay and you will complete this trial because your client is attempting to use your dismissal as a delay tactic.” That is actually a thing that happens specifically in the circumstance where a defendant is attempting to delay proceedings with frivolous dismissals. So if you’re worried that Trump is going to run out the clock by dismissing his lawyers and then demanding that the court let him find new ones, wait for them to get clearance to work on his case and get them up to speed, then dismiss them again just before the court-ordered time frame runs out - rest easy. The court has options to prevent lawyer-shopping as a delaying action.

Or, as I said, the judge can literally tell them, “As officers of the court, I am ordering you to be his court-appointed representation.” I’m a bit murky on the details of payment if the client wants to change representation and the court refuses to allow it, but I recall a case where it has happened in recent memory from Lawsky, I think. I’d have to do some adept searching to find it, though.

Yeah, I’ll admit not knowing what’s on the current roll (aside from the three photos I took off my balcony) does make a little nervous. Maybe it’d be better just to shoot the rest of the roll, toss it, and pick up a 24-exposure roll of fresh film. Might even go for some B/W 35mm film, which I can find here at our local camera shop, and do some arty shots around downtown Ostrava.

My cubicle mate died while on travel (and in the middle of a messy divorce). I was given the traditional task of cleaning out his office stuff honestly and intelligently. One of the clerks really, REALLY, wanted the 35mm camera in his desk. Wouldn’t do it, but I gave her the cartridge.

I’d have to do some adept searching to find it, though.

for each case, tfg has a team of lawyers. he cant have the exact same problem with all of them and then fire them all at the same last minute for the same cause.

So, earlier today, I was coming back home and I found me one of these…

[Embedded content]

Be sure to tell the lab that it was a “Found Film” 😎 Otherwise, Excellent save!!! 👍

Yeah, I’m pretty happy with it. I haven’t used a 35mm camera in a long, long time. Thankfully, 35mm film is still available here, either Kodak, Fujifilm, or for black & white film, Kentmere (never heard of them before).

‘Blatantly unconstitutional’: Nikki Haley ripped for ‘fascist’ proposal to outlaw anonymity on social media

alternet.org

Yeah, Nikki’s a real genius when it comes to cyber security. Why, when she was governor, nobody would have thought of massive identity theft/hacking from state files. Oh, wait:

S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley’s public statements in the wake of an unprecedented security breach at the South Carolina Department of Revenue (SCDOR) are being challenged by industry experts.

“The governor’s comments reflect unawareness of data security practices and are not at all reassuring,” network security Avivah Litan told Computer World.

Litan was referring to Haley’s claim that South Carolina was following “industry standard” practices when it failed to encrypt Social Security data that was stolen earlier this year by hackers presumed to be affiliated with an Eastern European crime syndicate. Beginning on August 27, more than 3.6 million Social Security numbers and nearly 400,000 credit and debit card numbers were stolen from the agency. Additional data - including individual tax return records - may have also been stolen, although Haley’s administration isn’t sure of the extent of the damage.

“To tell you (that) now would be guessing,” Haley told reporters this week.

How reassuring …

This is a nuance that is lost in much of the discussion of attitudes toward Israel and Judaism.

Those Fundamentalist Christians are a fucking death cult.

The rabid Israel-loving evangelicals are not nuanced in the importance of Israel but if you listen they occasionally slip. Just the other night I saw that Father Coughlin was getting too Nazi-loving and anti-Semitic and that’s when the Pope clipped him. Today’s hate preachers occasionally drop the mask.

Today’s right-wing culture warriors view Israel conflict as a weapon in their rabid anti-liberal culture wars. Every time they rant about anti-Semitism it’s to weaponize it, real or imagined, into a cudgel to browbeat the left. They love anti-Semitism, especially when the left does it, or when they can claim the left does it.

Kentmere is Ilford’s low rent brand. It’s good quality but they use less silver in the formulation of the emulsion to hold down the cost. This also tends to make it a little less contrasty which can be good or bad, depending. Camera like that one, it’s probably a fine fit if you can’t find any Foma Pan. I’d still suggest ISO400 speed to start just to give extra exposure latitude when you’re not 100% sure yet how well it works.

Kodak makes all the color (even if it’s labled Fuji, sigh). The 200 is just Kodak Gold. The Fuji 400 is at least tweaked by Kodak to Fuji’s specs - unless the box is labled “Superia” and sez Made in Japan. THEN it’s the good stuff and is the best amateur color film on the market.

Fire OS is a fork of Android based on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), but it’s far from the same thing. The Fire Max 11, a 2023 device, is running Fire OS 8, which is based on Android 11, released in 2020. As Roettgers points out, Fire TVs sold in 2023 are based on Android 9, from 2018. While an Android base provides a relatively familiar entry for developers that already have Android apps, rebuilding the AOSP project—meant to support a wealth of different devices and carrying years of technical debt—seemingly became frustrating enough for Amazon to push toward an in-house solution.

Amazon’s tired of their users being able to use Android apps.

Edit: Yes, the article speculates that at the bottom, but it’s pretty much the only reason.

I did a little online snooping. Looks like a really good basic point and shoot. You can do a lot with a camera like that - the only ones possibly any better were the Olympus Stylus ones. Enjoy it and it will do well for you 🙂 I look forward to your pictures.

Tip - if they offer the service, get scans and online uploads instead of prints. Around here that’s cheaper. Then when you want a print of something (I actually did yesterday) you can go back and just get that one or two done.

Time to go run errands and grab my Nikon rangefinder on the way out the door. Bright sunny day, supposed to be 60F/16C today - nice for mid November in Wisconsin.

I don’t actually. And don’t entertain or drink enough to have a great desire to get any. Norm for me is a couple of fingers of gin into a pint glass and then pour the entire small bottle of mixer on top.

I don’t add ice or anything since the mixer bottles are kept in the fridge and I keep a small bottle of whatever gin I am usually currently drinking in the freezer. Mules usually add simple syrup but I skip that in my ad hoc drinks to avoid the calories. (I consider the alcohol itself my “cheat” towards excess sugar/carbs for the day.)

HEY FOLKS! WATCH OUT FOR THEM THERE WHITE BUSSES!

GOP rep. rants theory at FBI director: ‘Ghost buses’ filled with informants incited Jan. 6

Rep. Clay Higgins (R-LA) suggested the FBI sent “ghost buses” filled with informants to incite the Capitol attack on Jan. 6, 2021.

At a House Homeland Security Committee hearing on Wednesday, Higgins peppered FBI Director Christopher Wray with questions about his agency’s role in Jan. 6.

“If you are asking whether the violence at the Capitol on Jan. 6 was part of some operation orchestrated by FBI sources and/or agents, the answer is emphatically no,” Wray insisted.

“Are you familiar with, you know, what a ghost vehicle is?” Higgins asked. “Director, you’re director of the FBI, certainly should. You know what a ghost bus is?”

“A ghost bus?” Wray replied. “I’m not sure I’ve used that term before.”

Higgins said a ghost bus was a “common” term referring to an unmarked vehicle “that’s used for secret purposes.”

“These two buses in the middle here, they were the first to arrive at Union Station on Jan. 6,” Higgins said, pointing to a photo. “I have all this evidence. I’m showing you a tip of the iceberg.”

At that point, a Democrat on the committee noted that Higgins was out of time. But the Republican lawmaker ranted on.

“I note that other members across the aisle have been granted time, and I object to my question being closed,” he said. “This is a very significant hearing, Mr. Chairman, and these buses are nefarious in nature and were filled with FBI informants dressed as Trump supporters and deployed onto our Capitol on Jan. 6.”

Your day is coming, Mr. Wray,” he added.

The first thing that came to my mind reading this was Captain Queeg ranting on and on about his strawberries…. except Queeg was a fictional character; and unfortunately, Rep. Higgins (well, AFAWCT) is real.

Does anyone know anything about the story that buses hired by the Jewish Federation refused to transport travelers from Detroit to the rally? Apparently the buses were hired by the organization for those who planned to attend yesterday’s rally and the drivers refused.

I’ve never really understood why anyone would want one of these trucks/vehicles with the mini-open bed. Not enough room for a bicycle or to carry a few 2x4s. And open to the elements compared to just having the fully covered back of the comparable SUV (or station wagon if you go far enough back.)

They have also tended to just be ugly looking cars as well in my opinion.

What it sounds like is that the Free Dumb Caucus is royally pissed off; having discovered that they cannot, after all, completely control either the Republican caucus, or the House in general, and, like angry toddlers denied some demand, are going to start yelling and throwing things. I mean, I’m sure they are going to try to dress up their tantrums in high-minded rhetoric about “principles” and all, but it’s still a tantrum.
Quite telling though, that to them, Speaker Johnson’s most-heinous sin appears to be “cooperating with Democrats”, I.e. acknowledging that the Opposition party even exists….
