When I was living in Steamboat Springs, CO I got a package out of the blue from Dad. He’d just got a good CD burner (remember those things?) and he sent me, unprompted, a bunch of music. Kicking Television: Live in Chicago by Wilco was in that package on two burned CDs with a note, “You NEED to listen to this album.”

I miss him.

Of course the first song on this set is called Pittsburgh, the city my Dad was born in.

Pittsburgh is a great Wilco tune, they still got it. Made me weep, “I wish Dad could’ve heard this one.”

Got up to the cabin and unloaded some new furniture and a big hunk of Brazilian cow hide (from a cow butchered for its meat). TV’s actually out of the box now but one pic a day is enough. Having a quick tequila then heading to the restaurant at the other end of the golf course.

Beach chair has been moved - ladder still has needs upstairs. Shelves will be replaced and filled with CDs we delayed donating - will bring those up next time…looking for a quality used component stereo system with some big-ass speakers to augment the evolving groove pit.

We’re having some issues with the database server, if you notice some slowness tonight. We may need to think about starting comments all over for the new year. Maybe archive what’s there somehow and do the big reset.

Gee, who could be the next to take the off ramp from the GOP Presidential race?

On Tuesday, NBC News reported entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy has cancelled all remaining television ad spending campaigns in Iowa and New Hampshire, and has so far not bought any new TV spots as the Iowa Republican Caucuses approach on January 15. His campaign insists that the cancellation of TV ads is simply the campaign adapting to a strategy of a “hypertargeted” approach to advertising.

Looks like it’s Ramadamadingdong heading for the exit ramp!

Twitch is a general free-for-all of creativity, meaning a lot of it sucks. But there are some truly gifted musicians and various streamers on the site. Video game streamers are the biggest draw. Even if you are not a fan of video games, some streamers will resonate with an audience based merely on character and the atmosphere generated in Chat.

Twitch is odd. It’s really a website that caters to cliques, where one person gets some friends/supporters to play along with them and subscribe.

It’s a cheap way to stream stuff to an audience without having to deal with youtube’s copyright strike system. And you can still make money from ads if your audience is big enough.

Yeah, go for it.

We’re having a similar problem at work right now. IT is trying to figure out how to keep literally terabytes of data representing nearly 20 years of digital art accessible to a WFH workforce without choking remote connectivity.

One issue we have is that the artists constantly have to search and retrieve old art to set up new projects. I think IT wants to wish the archive to the cornfield, never to be seen again. Which isn’t gonna work for us.

I’m guessing the past comments would still be available through a separate link/site?

re: #69 Decatur Deb

Dude died from a duel. Over an argument basically. Pity those times.

Decatur’s life and distinguished service in the U.S. Navy came to an early end when in 1820 Commodore James Barron challenged Decatur to a duel, related in part to comments Decatur had made over Barron’s conduct in the Chesapeake-Leopard affair of 1807. Because of Barron’s loss of Chesapeake to the British

Now in their positions, each duelist raised his pistol, cocked the flintlock and, while taking aim, stood in silence. Bainbridge called out, ‘One’ and Decatur and Barron both fired before the count of ‘two’. Decatur’s shot hit Barron in the lower abdomen and ricocheted into his thigh. Barron’s shot hit Decatur in the pelvic area, severing arteries. Both of the duelists fell almost at the same instant. Decatur, mortally wounded and clutching his side, exclaimed, “Oh, Lord, I am a dead man.”

We’re having some issues with the database server, if you notice some slowness tonight. We may need to think about starting comments all over for the new year. Maybe archive what’s there somehow and do the big reset.

Just a suggestion: create a second searchable comment DB and archive everything pre year 2018 into it to keep the most recent 5 years or so, and roll another year into the archive DB annually going forward.

Pendantic mode on . Very true but for one small thing - Smith and Carlos did not have their medals taken. The Nazi-sympathizer, Avery Brundage, demanded they be banned from the Olympic Village. And according to Wikipedia, the USOC tried to do the right thing, initially balked at the ban but following a threat from Brundage, who threatened to an the entire American team, they sent the two home.

So, just a small detail as the reason for the banning was obviously racism. But the USOC tried to stand for the right thing in not banning them and did not take their medals.

The problem is that you are doing text pattern searching. That’s not really what most databases are designed for, and is generally just a linear search through the database.

There are times when, in Zinn’s book, such as:

The rich, giving part of their enormous earnings in this way, became known as philanthropists. These educational systems [Vanderbilt, Duke, Cornell, Stanford, Hampton, Tuskegee Institute] did not encourage dissent; they trained the middlemen in the American system - the teachers, doctors, lawyers, administrators, engineers, technicians, politicians- those who would be paid to keep the system going, to be loyal buffers against trouble.

Seem to make just about everyone complicit in the effort to hand all the money to the rich.

I’m also annoyed at his next paragraph, which includes the sentence “it was important that these people [students learning to read, write and do math] learn obedience to authority.” How is this different than any other part of human history, and what would his opposite be, “yes, sometime 2+2 doesn’t have to be four, it can be five”?

I didn’t actually see Kanye’s Hebrew note before but of course the text is left justified LOL!

I’m not sure David has it quite right above. It’s not that Kanye only sees Israelis as Jews, it’s that he sees Jews as only truly belonging in Israel, and his misaligned Hebrew text is a kind of nod to the dual loyalty trope and Christian Zionist premillennial dispensationalists. So it’s truly fucked up to see the ADL just stupidly walk into that buzzsaw again and again because their leadership just won’t accept the reality of a Judaism that isn’t monolithically nationalist.

K, that leads to more questions. Why would a text search be needed? Why wouldn’t the searching be over a fixed range of records anyway? Are there modern databases that don’t support full text indexing?

Microsoft is such a pain.

Wanted to install VS Code on my Mac. Because my Mac is old I cannot use the latest version, but needed a version from last year.

Couldn’t find it on the VS Code website, but Google came to my rescue. Microsoft did not list in their help section the full revision number that I needed.

I install it via information Google gave me… it worked, but then I wanted to change some preferences, making the fonts larger.

Of course one had to restart the program for the changes take affect.

So I tried that… but then VS Code says it is not compatible with my version of MacOS.

Which I thought strange, as I had just run it.

Then I checked the version in my Applications folder… and all of a sudden it was the latest version.

Then I remembered how people complain about auto-updates in Microsoft Windows, so I figured that was the problem.

Microsoft auto-updates the version of VS Code without checking if the new version is compatible with my computer.

How dumb.

Why in the hell is there even an auto-update option on by default?

So I had to re-install the old version (fortunately I keep downloaded packages of software, unlike so many poorly thought out recommendations one finds by so-called experts in Youtube videos).

First thing I did was change the prefs to cancel auto-updates.

If I were King, one of the first things I’d do (after banning leaf-blowers) is to declare that no software can be auto—updated by default.

Portly Dunny has a story behind him. Last year he jumped, thrown, grabbed by falcon and fell into the Hudson river off of the Dunn Memorial Bridge. I had a contractor, DA Collins, working on a barge under the bridge. The contractor was on high alert because we were working under a Peregrine Falcon’s nesting box. An ironworker heard a splash and they though a falcon fledgling fell in. Willy grabbed a net and scooped out a very wet Dunny Collins. Photos behind privacy tags because some may find it upsetting.

Growth in the trading of emissions credits has hit a snag, with the effectiveness of carbon offset projects, such as forest conservation, being called into question and demand for carbon offsets plunging.

As airlines and other major buyers of emissions credits have begun to shun the market, carbon credit futures have fallen 90% from their peak, making it difficult for the financial instrument to play a major role in global decarbonization.

In October, Shell CEO Wael Sawan caused a stir when he said the oil major had given up a plan to spend $100 million a year on carbon offsets. The British company used to buy carbon credits in private, voluntary markets to offset greenhouse gas emissions generated from its production and transportation of liquefied natural gas before selling the fuel to environment-conscious customers. It had planned to purchase credits worth 120 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent annually through 2030.

There are two types of emissions trading, one led by public entities like the European Union and the other involving credits issued by private project developers. If a business has a cap imposed on it by a public authority, it is required to buy an allowance from legally mandated programs to offset emissions in excess of the ceiling. Companies that have set voluntary emissions reduction targets use private credits to meet their goals.

Lee Sun-kyun, a popular South Korean actor best known for his role in the Oscar-winning movie “Parasite,” was found dead in a car in Seoul on Wednesday, authorities said, after weeks of an intense police investigation into his alleged drug use.

Police and emergency officers initially found Lee in what they believed was an unconscious state in the car parked on a street in northern Seoul. Emergency officers later confirmed he was dead, according to Seoul’s Seongbuk police station.

The problem is that exponential returns lead to a few people owning everything.

Multiple Pizza Hut franchises in California are planning to lay off delivery drivers as the restaurant chain braces for an increase in the minimum wage for fast food workers next year.

Several Pizza Hut operators filed notices to comply with the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act saying they were discontinuing their delivery services.

“PacPizza, LLC, operating as Pizza Hut, has made a business decision to eliminate first-party delivery services and, as a result, the elimination of all delivery driver positions,” a federal WARN Act notice filed by the fast-food operator with the state’s Employment Development Department said, Business Insider reported.

Another operator, Southern California Pizza Co. also announced layoffs of around 841 drivers across the state.

Who the fuck would buy a Pizza Hut pizza if they can’t get it delivered?!? That’s the one and only appeal of that calls-itself-a-pizza.

On that one, Polish President Duda got outplayed.

The new Polish government has sent Polish state-owned media into liquidation.

So the cost to the consumer will be the same or higher than just paying drivers a fair wage

They don’t care about the cost to the consumer — only their bottom line.

You’ll still be able to have it delivered, you’ll just have to pay the door dash/GrubHub/Uber eats premium.

And casino gambling outside of Vegas and AC happened because Canada legalized casino gambling. Then they put a casino at literally every border crossing.
Didn’t take long for the realization millions of $$$ were leaving never coming back.
When Canada legalized cannabis, New York and Michigan took note.
And Pa Medical MJ law does not allow the smoking of flower, only the vaporizing of it.
If you get caught, you lose your MJ card.
And you have to hide your Medical card so a cop can’t see it.
Because you will get fucked.

The Chryon: “NY Bill would force Chick-Fil-A’s to open Sundays

I recall seeing a Chick-Fil-A at Atlanta Airport and wondering if they were open Sundays, as most concessions for services at public places like airports, highway rest stops or shopping malls call for them to be open between certain set hours.

The NY bill would require all concessions at state highway rest stops to be open on Sundays (when lots of people travel)

That of course applies to all shops, not just the performatively pious Christian ones.

Saw them in Madison WI on the first show of that tour. Damn that was a hell of a show. I remember I came back with drinks and my ex told me how she got hit on my this dude. She gently declined. No prob. Hell, I’ve never been the kind to worry about it - as long as she got home safe, have fun. That said, a few moments later though, a couple of teens came up asking where their dad was. She was like “Who?” “The guy who was talking to you!” “Oh, that way.” “Thanks!”

Bleed like me, indeed 😈

Here’s some more on the situation in Poland:

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s cabinet placed public television and radio under liquidation after the president vetoed legislation providing subsidies to the state-run media amid a political standoff over the broadcasters.

Culture Minister Bartłomiej Sienkiewicz said on Wednesday that Telewizja Polska SA, Polskie Radio SA and news agency Polska Agencja Prasowa SA have been disbanded after a “suspension in financing” due to President Andrzej Duda’s veto. The liquidation status will help to efficiently restructure public media and avoid layoffs amid a lack of public funding, the ministry said.

Earlier, Tusk said he was willing to work with Duda and members of the opposition Law & Justice party in the future to create a “more balanced public media” landscape and a stable funding system replacing the current finance ministry subsidies. His cabinet’s decision last week to reshuffle the management ranks of public broadcasters fueled sit-in protests by Law & Justice officials, who lost their governing majority in an October election.

The premier, whose pro-European coalition took office two weeks ago, expressed disappointment in Duda’s decision to veto a government spending plan that included public media subsidies. The move put on display the willingness of the head of state to confront Tusk over legislation, signaling that the prime minister will struggle to undertake bigger projects.

“My expectations and hopes regarding the president’s actions have diminished a lot recently,” Tusk told reporters in Warsaw on Wednesday. Law & Justice has resisted because “for the last eight years they got used to treating public media as their own property,” he said.

I thought it had more to do with the proliferation of casinos run by Indian tribes. They were popping up in just about every state anyway so the states were like if we gotta deal with the problems we may as well get the revenue too.

I thought it had more to do with the proliferation of casinos run by Indian tribes. They were popping up in just about every state anyway so the states were like if we gotta deal with the problems we may as well get the revenue too.

Yup, once the tribes were able to have gaming it broke the mob’s monopoly on table games and, even better, it funneled money from some of the most racist motherfuckers I’ve ever seen into the pockets of the people that have been historically rat-fucked the worst in America.

Growing up my parents were employed by the University as staff - not teachers: my dad was a janitor pushing a broom & mom was a librarian. Behind the scenes. My beloved GF’s mom was a prof and dad was in admissions so I had the ability to see all sides of the school; that really did inform my socialism.

Back to the Native Americans, my father met some of the young students from the Rez up at Hayward and became friends with them. We’d go up to hang with them in the early 70s. My alcoholic single grandmother with her 5 teen children lived in a shack (literally). Yet it was nice compare to some of the places I saw up there. The kind of place they really swept a dirt floor in midwinter. (I might add that the Hayward Rez was actually the nicest one in Wisconsin. The rest went from bad to worse. The ones in South Dakota are, literally hell on earth.) These are all things I only understood years later. They did the best they could and despite everything that the government and BIA threw at them they put their children trough higher education to give them a better life. I pray they have had that.

Once gaming became legal the tribe started a trust. All that money went into a big pot. They invested it. Built infrastructure. Schools. Houses. If it were to go away tomorrow they would still have decades of money from the foolish white-bread fuckers who wasted their money on blackjack and slots for years. And that’s not even mentioning all the money they get from selling “illegal” fireworks and tobacco to the whites. And I just say fuck yes.

You ignorant fascist bastards, you’re already paying reparations but you are too fucking stupid to realize it! LOL!

But they screw their workers in numerous ways as well, but first and foremost by classifying them as independent contractors.

And these jobs are dangerous, statistically far more dangerous than being a cop.

I don’t gamble either. But when I’m up there, I shop on the Rez, buy gas on the Rez, etc. Every penny helps them. I remember some native kids I played with when I was gah 8? 10? I hope they have had a good life. I played with the game life with it set on “EASY” mode as a white male. My son is on “Medium” (Asian but still male) and I still worry for him. Native? Hard & Harder…
