Nikki Haley Now Says Civil War ‘About Slavery’ After First Ignoring It

Politics • Views: 15,935

In one of the more pathetic political moments of the year, Nikki Haley (aka Donald Trump in a skirt) tried to evade a question about the reason for the Civil War, because she knows the Republican base doesn’t want to hear any talk about slavery or racism, or basically anything real at all.

Now she’s trying to walk it back, but not really.

“What was the cause of the United States Civil War?” the man asked Haley in Berlin, N.H.

She replied, “Well, don’t come with an easy question.” Then she proceeded to answer.

“I think the cause of the Civil War was basically how government was going to run, the freedoms and what people could and couldn’t do,” Haley said.

“I think it always comes down to the role of government and what the rights of the people are,” Haley added. “And I will always stand by the fact that I think government was intended to secure the rights and freedoms of the people. It was never meant to be all things to all people. Government doesn’t need to tell you how to live your life. They don’t need to tell you what you can and can’t do. They don’t need to be a part of your life.”

The questioner expressed surprise at Haley’s response, saying, “In the year 2023, it’s astonishing to me that you answer that question without mentioning the word slavery.”

“What do you want me to say about slavery?” Haley asked.

The man responded, “You’ve answered my question, thank you.”

And of course, in tried and true Republican fashion, she accused the man who asked the question of being “a Democratic plant.”

The former U.N. ambassador on Thursday also accused the man who asked her the question of being a Democratic plant. The audience member declined to share his name or party affiliation with reporters.

“We see these guys when they come in. We know what they’re doing,” Haley said.

Yes, you know what they’re doing. They’re exposing your pandering and racism.

In the right wing sewers of the internet, the Republican base is furious at her for backing down, of course.

One position that the Netanyahu government and Hamas have in common: neither cares about the suffering and harm done to the civilians in Gaza. Hamas, of course, has never cared about the well-being of the citizens in Gaza. One can certainly argue that the Israeli focus has to be on their own people, not those in Gaza. But it is still wrong to be cavalier about the harm being inflicted on the innocents living there, especially given that it will only make the situation worse for Israel in the long run.

I don’t think the base wanted to hear that, either. It was the War of Northern Aggression and They started it, see. She obviously saw the trap and tried to waffle, but everyone has called out the obvious waffle.

Trump would have told the questioner that he was a bad person and called him fat. That would have worked with the base.

And there was a conversation the other day about summer sausage, and I brought up ring bologna. In Pennsy there is a lot of choices. I found local shops were a toss up on ring bologna when my local guy shut down years ago. And I forgot that Seltzer has these. Smaller, drier and more chewy. Sweet and regular. Berks is a big brand. Hatfield is another. But I always bought local. But you also have to know their standards. Some backwoods butchers do not sterilize well. And when they say it’s garlic, believe them. I was kicked out of bed a few times because I was a cauldron of garlic fumes.
I snapped this today.

Regarding Darling Nikki:

It’s part of the Republican game to engage in obvious dumbassery. It’s like the Nigerian scam: by weeding out critical thinkers, those left remaining are easy marks to exploit for money and power.

The Confederate monuments are just a glaring example. When they ask if you knew that “Republicans freed the slaves, and therefore Democrats are the true racists,” and then you ask why the GOP are the ones defending monuments to racist Democrats, they sneer at you for having taken the bait. The obvious brain worms are a feature, and fooling the base gives them the smirk that is sometimes called the “dupers delight.”

Many of the hostages released from detention in Gaza by Hamas in November still require intensive treatment for the trauma from their weeks in captivity, a leading Israeli psychiatrist has said.

Among the 14 freed hostages treated at her centre, she said, were child hostages who had been drugged by their captors - including with ketamine - and were suffering from withdrawal, those who had subjected to or witnessed sexual abuse, a woman who had been kept in a tiny cage, and another who had a breakdown after being kept in complete darkness for days.

Simple: contemporary Republicans are all heirs to the Dixiecrats.

Have to say, if the GOP truly severed itself from Trump and MAGAism — Liz Cheney would make a formidable opponent against Biden. She holds all the worst domestic policy views as Haley, without the loyalty to Trump, and is very articulate and knowledgeable. Simple: contemporary Republicans are all heirs to the Dixiecrats.

As I said above, this part is obvious. What I find interesting is how they know this, and can plainly see the contradiction. My theory is that they use this as a power play in the same way Putin assassinates people who “fall out of windows.”

It’s the absurdness of the lie that makes it powerful.

Funniest bit of the Haley fail is the idea that the questioner was a “Democratic plant,” now circulating among right wing pundits.

Yeah, he came prepared with a real gotcha question, something no Republican could be expected to answer honestly.

“What caused the Civil War?” It’s a head-scratcher.

I’m just surprised that she call him a “Democratic plant” rather than the usual “democrat”.

We did a Christmas celebration at my older daughter house.

I brought my kids gifts loaded in a cardboard box. After the gift distribution, I put the empty box on the floor.

My daughters older cat, who is not friendly, immediately hopped into the empty box and actually allowed folks to pet him.

So I brought Christmas cheer to at least one being.

(my kids and grand kids also appreciated their gifts)

Exclusive: Recordings, emails show how Trump team flew fake elector ballots to DC in final push to overturn 2020 election

Two days before the January 6 insurrection, the Trump campaign’s plan to use fake electors to block President-elect Joe Biden from taking office faced a potentially crippling hiccup: The fake elector certificates from two critical battleground states were stuck in the mail.

So, Trump campaign operatives scrambled to fly copies of the phony certificates from Michigan and Wisconsin to the nation’s capital, relying on a haphazard chain of couriers, as well as help from two Republicans in Congress, to try to get the documents to then-Vice President Mike Pence while he presided over the Electoral College certification.

The operatives even considered chartering a jet to ensure the files reached Washington, DC, in time for the January 6, 2021, proceeding, according to emails and recordings obtained by CNN.

The new details provide a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the chaotic last-minute effort to keep Donald Trump in office. The fake electors scheme features prominently in special counsel Jack Smith’s criminal indictment against the former president, and some of the officials who were involved have spoken to Smith’s investigators.

The emails and recordings also indicate that a top Trump campaign lawyer was part of 11th-hour discussions about delivering the fake elector certificates to Pence, potentially undercutting his testimony to the House select committee that investigated January 6 that he had passed off responsibility and didn’t want to put the former vice president in a difficult spot.

These details largely come from pro-Trump attorney Kenneth Chesebro, who was an architect of the fake electors plot and is now a key cooperator in several state probes into the scheme. Chesebro pleaded guilty in October to a felony conspiracy charge in Georgia in connection with the electors’ plan, and has met with prosecutors in Michigan, Nevada and Wisconsin, who are investigating the sham GOP electors in their own states.

My pawn shop find from earlier today. $40 out the door with the Canon 135/3.5 New FD attached. On Eprey, black paint AE-1 Programs are going from $180 to $500 ;)

The 50/1.8 was from my mother’s AE-1 Program that she bought new back in 1982 for a University class. She learned to be pretty good with it. Don’t know where I got the Cosina 28/2.8 from but it was why I would later trust the Cosina Voigtlander products.

I am home at last from my wanderings. Trip to fishfolk wasn’t half bad; only a couple of racist remarks here and there, which is an improvement, sad to say. The trip back was… harrowing. An un-forecast pop-up snowstorm in northern IL/southern WI resulted in about an hour’s worth of the worst white-knuckle driving I have ever had to endure. But, ya boi didn’t earn his spotless driving record for nothing, and we got through the other side and all the way back to the fishbowl without incident. We even picked up the cat, who is now busily reasserting her domain. How go things among the lizardfolk? What fresh hell did I miss?

It’s a line they use simply to “own the libs”. They understand that there was a sea change in party orientation in the 1960s where the GOP welcomed in the Dixiecrats and other racists. It’s not a “lie”, but it’s a very clear misrepresentation of the current realities since they are implying the Democrats and Republicans are both the same as they were in 1861.

Theatre chain AMC apologizes after civil rights leader says he was kicked out of screening

The Rev William Barber says he was trying to use his own chair in the disabled section for a screening of The Color Purple

Movie theatre chain AMC has apologized to a North Carolina civil rights leader after he was kicked out of a screening of The Color Purple for trying to use his own chair in the disabled section.

The Rev William Barber, a former president of the NAACP North Carolina chapter, who suffers from a form of arthritis known as ankylosing spondylitis and walks with two canes, said that he tried to use a special chair he brought to an AMC Cineplex in Greenville on Tuesday afternoon and was told by staff he couldn’t.

Barber, 60, later told CNN that he has a medical condition that makes it impossible to sit in a regular chair. Barber shared a video of the incident that showed a stool-type chair with a backrest and no arms. (Barber has written for the Guardian.)

Police in Greenville confirmed that officers were called to the theatre around 3.20pm on Tuesday for a trespassing call and arrived to find a customer arguing with staff. No arrests were made.

The civil rights leader, who led the congregation at Greenleaf Christian church in Goldsboro, was attending the screening of the film, a musical adaptation of Alice Walker’s 1982 novel, with his elderly mother. He left the theatre with no issues, according to police.

AMC later apologized to Barber in a statement, saying: “We sincerely apologize to Bishop Barber for how he was treated, and for the frustration and inconvenience brought to him, his family, and his guests.

Have had some disagreements with MAGAts on Twitter who reject the premise that the parties have switched positions. Dinesh certainly promotes that idea in his movies: it’s always Jim Crow era with the “Demoncrats” in charge. Prager U apparently promotes the same concept. And that’s why it’s the Republicans who want to retain all the statues celebrating the Confederacy and all the military bases named after traitors.

WaPo ping: Maine Sec of State removes DT from primary ballot.

Did any more such shenanigannery happen while I was gone? There’s a few days of backlog to go through.

This is number two.

Edit: though there’s a 50-50 chance this is just to justify leaving Biden off.

There is some very far right wing fiction about Jack Smith. I think that was in a previous thread.

Michigan kept him on the primary ballot (Michigan law says everyone must be on it), said check back if he’s the nominee.

So they did a Minnesota, which doesn’t surprise me. I think this increases the odds that SCOTUS hands back a decision that says, “Each state follows its own rules, so Colorado’s ruling is upheld, Maine’s ruling is upheld, but neither of these invalidates what MN and MI have done.”

That can work for the primaries, but if it gets to the general and there are conflicting decisions, I think they’ll have to weigh in.

Good tip

When plotting to overthrow the government, do not rely on the USPS, especially if you undermined it in the first place

Yes, they will. Primaries are a horse of a different color; they are the way in which state parties decide the candidates they want to put forward in the upcoming elections. Unless otherwise contravened by state law, the party could just pick Trump and be done with it (as the Colorado GOP has implied they will do). But in the election itself, it’s pretty clear: The name can’t be on the ballot if they are ineligible to hold the office. SCOTUS will have to put their foot down one way or the other.

I was on a month-long exercise that included an E7 from the Rhode Island NG. She had a personal cookbook of amazing things that could be made using MREs as raw material. She went around the tent city collecting this-and-that, made some really good chocolate brownies.

When I was in the Air Farce in the early 80’s, we would get meals whenever we were on a mission of over 5 hours. If it was really long we would get two meals. Often it was a fried chicken meal w/ slaw and potato salad (AKA “Inflight Chicken”) but occasionally a box of C rats (Vietnam Era). A couple of times we actually found an occasional box of K rats (WW2!) mixed in w/ a box of C rats on long flights

So, if you’ve never had the pleasure of eating a C ration entree of Ham and Mother(fucker)s (ham and lima beans) or Beans and Baby Dicks (baked beans and l’i hot dogs) you haven’t lived. Do so at your peril!

They’re gonna have to decide if there’s a distinction between holding an office and ‘merely’ running for it.

No different than a non citizen or an under 35.

Can you campaign, fundraise, etc for an office you are ineligible to hold.

And oh gee looked what I did there.
The presidency is an office. Who knew.

Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) added himself to a growing list of critics knocking Nikki Haley over her refusal to cite slavery as a reason for the Civil War, The Messenger reports.

Said Donalds: “Psst Nikki… the answer is slavery PERIOD.”

But he added: “This really doesn’t matter because Trump is going to be the nominee

Sometime in 83/84 we went out to the field with C rations. Midway through the ex we were issued MRE’s. I preferred the CRats.

While Colorado is blue, Maine assigns electors by congressional district, and the northern district is Trumpy, so being left off the ballot in Maine would likely cost him an electoral vote he needs.

If it’s not from the Soldier Systems region of Natick MA, it’s not MRE. It’s just crap in a brown bag.

I had an MRE a few times. We had a coffee maker on the -135 and we could pour hot water directly into the bag.

Some were OK, but most were Meals Revolting to Eat. I heard they got better in later days.

I’m not averse to watching Steve1989MREInfo’s videos sometimes, because, especially for the older rats, it can be an interesting view back in time and/or a view into how other countries do military rations:

Such a random discussion the other night, we were talking about the art in the WH residence & how they can request & hang stuff from the national gallery. I’d be like, 3 month rotation of all the stuff I love. The best benefit of the office. No doubt.
