Trump; “Where’s the 12 year old?”
Epstein; “Right over there.”

You can really feel the disappointment from the Beltway that the only Dem that most voters would immediately recognize that’s mentioned in the Epstein Docs…is Bill Clinton. Their hopes that Hunter, James, or even Joe himself would be in there have been dashed. Likewise not a single major Dem in the current party gets so much as a mention. Just Bill F’n Clinton, a guy most people made peace with being a hornball years ago. So now, instead of dealing with the reality that the GQP’s front-runner had a close relationship with both Epstein and Maxwell, we’re instead going to get a bunch of “think pieces” about how the Dems are somehow in a bind because Bill shows up in the Docs.

Bill Clinton showed what kind of man he is by publicly accusing Monica Lewinsky of lying. He wasn’t the worst president we ever had but personally he is a scumbag, and I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if he was involved with Epstein.

I still remember when the NG started showing up in DC, the lurid fantasies that the MAGAts engaged in about how Il Douche was gonna give the order and the crackdown would begin, the nation treated to images of NG troops clubbing BLM/Antifa protestors over the head with batons and choking them with tear and pepper gas.

And then it never happened because of that pesky Posse Comitatus Act that prevented Trump from turning the NG into his own private army, forcing him to ship in unmarked goons from various Cabinet agencies to do the dirty work.

Yeah, that’s what is going to aggravate the pundits the most, that there’s no mileage in more “Bill Clinton is a scumbag” coverage because nobody in the party is really arguing otherwise anymore. It’s like articles about new Weinstein allegations, who cares at this point? My brother and I are going to talk with Dad on Saturday regarding Health Care Power of Attorney and Durable Power of Attorney. His decline over the past two months has been dramatic. We were able to get him to sign HIPPA authorizations for us last week with his primary care physician and set up an appointment with her later this month. I also was able to speak with the physician’s nurse about what my brother and I have witnessed and experienced. This will be a very difficult conversation to have because Dad can be a paranoid, obstinate person. But it is clear he has Parkinson’s Dementia or Lewy Body Dementia - given his gait and the repeated and confused calls or text messages regarding our recent meetings for lunch. He is also prone to falls, and his residence is in disarray compared to just three months ago. This should have been done years ago - but his ego and self-denial stood in the way. Just wish me and my brother luck that we can get him to understand.

My understanding of US tax code for normies was that gift income is _never_ taxable on the point of view of the recipient — only the giver. So everyone giving Thomas the gifts might be guilty of tax evasion but not Thomas himself.

he might not go to prison, but two federal judges have been impeached and removed for tax evasion and another for making false financial disclosures. Another was impeached and removed for accepting gifts from litigants and attorneys.

As I’ve said for a while when it comes to Thomas and the Court’s issues with corruption - there is a means handling it, but it requires the political will to use the impeachment power.

It depends. Pretty sure that the giver has to report it. Only the first 10k/year/person is exempted. After that the giver can deduct from the max allowed for estate taxes, otherwise the recipient has to report it. I’m not a CPA though, so take my understanding with a grain of salt.

Justice Thomas never repaid luxury RV loan: Senate report

WASHINGTON (CN) — Justice Clarence Thomas had a $267,230 loan forgiven by his wealthy health executive friend, according to a new report by the Senate Finance Committee released Wednesday.

Anthony Welters loaned Thomas the money in 1999 to buy his 40-foot luxury motor coach. By 2008, the loan had been forgiven, but there is no documentation showing Thomas actually paid it off, nor that he reported it as a forgiven debt to the Internal Revenue Service.

Does it matter? Richardson is deceased, and unlike that Other Bill, was never an A-List politico (though with a decent record). Maybe he was a “typical Epstein client” (I.e. wealthy pedophile pervert) or not, but still, not much of a name to hang second-hand smears on (though I’m sure some GOPers will try).

As long as the relationship is consensual and the person is an adult. (Yes — I know, legally a minor cannot consent to such a relationship). But let’s not forget, although they prettied it up, that was the real reason for the GOP impeachment of Clinton — he lied about a consensual affair with a young, but adult, woman. Any political party that would impeach someone on such ridiculous charges, back when they had sane members, would be willing to impeach on even a more frivolous basis given the clown car they have devolved into.

And I always says that was between Hilary and him. I think he was simultaneously a scumbag personally and a decent president.

re: #57 Backwoods Sleuth

this is true.
otoh (and dangerman can correct me if I’m wrong), in general, if a debt is canceled, forgiven, or discharged for less than the amount owed, the amount of the canceled debt is taxable.

ETA (I hit “post” too soon): IIRC, Thomas’ RV “loan” was forgiven.

Ps yes the loan forgiveness is more or less right (it’s taxable)

And it’s the donor who’s responsible for gift tax and filing if gifts are over the limits.

Gee I wonder if any of those gifts went to Ginnie.

Markm1960  Jan 4, 2024 • 5:30:20pm

It’s the unified estate and gift tax, estates and gifts are linked.

You can give up to $18k per year to an individual without it having any tax effect. You can also gift split, meaning a husband and a wife can each give $18k to the same individual before there are any tax consequences.

When you give over $18k, the amounts over $18 k are subject to tax. However there is a lifetime exemption. Currently the exemption is about $13m.

So, let’s say you are wealthy and give out gifts of $20m to 10 people over a period of years. $18k per person per year is exempt. The remaining is subject to tax. However the tax on the first $13m is exempt. And you owe tax on the remaining $7m.

It’s a lifetime exemption, so if after those $20m gifts you die and leave $20m to your kids, your estate would owe tax on the $20m.

It can get complex. There are mandatory filings you gave to do each year you give gifts, and the filings are cumulative, so the govt can trace your gifts and track how much of your lifetime exemption you use.

Kind of dry kind of boring and out of most peoples dreams because a relatively low number of people have $13m net worth’s, and those who do hire Cracker Jack estate planners who can minimize the tax burden.

Who remembers that horror movie from the ‘70’s where Karen Black brings home a tchotchka from a vacation in Mexico and it turns out to hold the soul of an indigenous warrior.

I would like to see a remake of that but instead of a Mexican tchotchka it’s a Matryoshka. And every time you kill one another keeps popping out until there is an army of assorted sized babushka running around.

On his death bed a billionaire gives a gift of his entire fortune to his son, and then dies. If what you say is true, estate taxes would never be collected aside from unexpected/accidental deaths.

There would still be a gift tax return.
There would still be an estate return.
There would be a tax calculated
If the estate has nothing left to pay it, you can be 100% comfortable theyd get it from the donee/recipient

Good.

A Florida event featuring United States Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) was canceled Thursday after the hosting venue learned the gathering intended to commemorate the third anniversary of January 6, NBC News exclusively reports.

“Please be advised that Westgate was not made aware of the purpose of this event when we were approached to host a book signing,” Westgate Resorts in Kissimmee said in a statement, according to the report. “This event has been canceled and is no longer taking place at our resort.”

Right. I had a more complete reply up thread. Gift taxes are a tax burden on the receiver over 10k/year/source unless the giver files a form that essentially deducts from the lifetime gift allowance which is tied to the estate tax exemption.

Arrest footage of Trump co-defendant provides glimpse into Jack Smith probe

“They were f—king relentless,” former Black Voices for Trump director Harrison Floyd said of his confrontation with FBI agents dispatched by the special counsel.

Boo fucking hoo, asshole!

Special counsel Jack Smith’s probe of Donald Trump’s election subversion has mostly played out in stuffy conference rooms and secret grand jury chambers, but last February, it nearly turned violent.

During a tense confrontation with FBI agents who were trying to serve a subpoena, Harrison Floyd — a 2020 Trump campaign aide — considered grabbing one of the agents’ guns, Floyd told local police officers who arrived at his door shortly afterward. His exchange with the local police was captured in body camera footage obtained by POLITICO through a public records request.

The footage shows the aftermath of a heated encounter between Floyd and two FBI agents dispatched by Smith. In the video, a winded, bare-chested Floyd complains to police in Rockville, Maryland, that he has just been accosted by a pair of men who pursued him into his apartment building. One flashed a gun, prompting Floyd — a Marine Corps veteran and mixed martial arts fighter who saw combat in the Iraq War — to consider wrestling it away, Floyd says in the video
.
“If he reached up, I probably could have tried to stop the muzzle, but he would have definitely threw my hand,” Floyd tells the officers, who were responding to a 911 call he placed about armed men barging into his building. “But the other one was right next to me. So, if I went for that gun, and he pulled a gun, now I’m fighting two guys with guns, that’s not good. So, I backed up and went away. … I could’ve been killed really fucking easily, if I wasn’t smart.”
