Bob James: Tiny Desk Concert

Music • Views: 12,270

Bob James’ Tiny Desk concert is a manifestation of freedom and collaboration. “I have youth represented here,” he says before introducing his band. “I don’t have that myself, but I can hire it.” The joke is tinged with a certain degree of truth. Still, curiosity and openness fuel his fresh spirit and keep his fanbase wide-ranging. The jazz pianist, composer and producer took his opportunity at the Desk to highlight his iconic discography, spanning over five decades.

Quincy Jones discovered Bob James in the 1960s and signed him to a record deal. He then arranged for other jazz greats like Sarah Vaughan and Grover Washington Jr. before releasing his album One in 1974. That album featured “Feel Like Making Love” and “Nautilus,” one of the most sampled records in hip-hop. While James has released dozens of projects with his contemporaries, hip-hop has been the bridge to younger generations.

Before the new, improvised version of “Nautilus” with DJ Jazzy Jeff and Talib Kweli — seriously, they mapped it out and tried it once before we hit record — James played other highlights from his catalog including “Westchester Lady,” “Angela (Theme from Taxi),” and “The Secret Drawer” from his Grammy-nominated album, Jazz Hands.

Nothing would make me happier than never seeing or hearing from The Flatulent Guy again.

I’m so tired of checking the news every morning and hearing about that asshole. I despair for my fellow citizens who are being subjected to his insane rantings and especially for the assholes who are clinging to The Flabby Guy like toilet paper on Uranus.

In case I’m not clear, I HATE that asshole.

Thinking about my dad today, who is buried at Arlington after a distinguished career in the military. He was the most moral, loving person I’ve ever met.

Amazing performance from an 84 year old. You can tell his age partly because he slipped up in his Andrey Chmut intro and referred to “the Ukraine,” which was the style once upon a time.

Bill Walton died of cancer, he was 71. The guy I bought my latest mountain bike from was good friends with him, they did Ride The Rockies - a road bike tour of Colorado - a few times together. I had the opportunity to ride a bicycle with Bill and my friend from Steamboat Springs to Vail, to this day the most miles I’ve put in the saddle in one day. Dude was really tall. I remember him being encouraging on the ride, “You got this!” Stuff like that. RIP

It’s his “style” to make every national holiday about himself and airing his grievances and performing what he thinks are “feats of strength” (air boxing to “MAGA” music).

You’d be amazed how many people say “Happy Memorial Day” (it is for them, it’s the unofficial first day of Summer, beach day, bar-b-que day, party and drinking day, everything except reflecting on the nation’s dead day).

Over the years I’ve made a point of staying entirely out of public on Memorial Day from all the well-wishers.

“A single mega-colony of ants has colonised much of the world, scientists have discovered. Argentine ants living in vast numbers across Europe, the US and Japan belong to the same inter-related colony, and will refuse to fight one another.”

In Europe, one vast colony of Argentine ants is thought to stretch for 6,000km (3,700 miles) along the Mediterranean coast, while another in the US, known as the “Californian large”, extends over 900km (560 miles) along the coast of California. A third huge colony exists on the west coast of Japan.

If you want to know why so many of our fellow Americans remain ignorant about the economy, I can sum it up in the chyron on Faux this very minute: “Pace of inflation cooled in April, Prices of food remain high.” As I’ve said before, they are genuinely BSing people that inflation coming down means prices are supposed to come down. Like it’s a balloon that gradually deflates as you let air out, rather than a state of being that is as old as the idea of “capitalism.”

The holiday stems from the American Civil War, which killed more than 600,000 service members — both Union and Confederate — between 1861 and 1865.

Wrong. Confederates weren’t “service members.” They were insurrectionists.

My paternal grandfather was killed in WW2 in Europe. My paternal grandmother served in the WAC. They were both “undocumented immigrants” from Poland.

My maternal grandfather was a Marine Corp Reservist, but was not called up because he had a critical job as an engineer at Ford. My maternal grandmother and her first cousin both served in the WAC.

My father was killed in the Vietnam War in the Navy; my mother served in the Navy during the Vietnam Era.

I’m not terribly interested in being wished a “Happy Memorial Day.”

That said, it would be difficult to change a nation’s attitude about this. That said, it’s kind of the point of liberty. The government isn’t telling you what to do with your time (and business needs to make money on what was a solemn occasion).

I see a lot of people on Bluesky savaging Biden for his support of Israel, but what they seem most angry about are people reminding them that Trump would be worse.
They seem to be lobbying for a reality in which they can support the citizens of Gaza by criticizing Democrats and ignore the risk of another Republican victory here.

I wound up on a bunch of block lists when someone was whinging “DO SOMETHING!!!uno£!$!” with his “bully pulpit.” I responded exactly how the bully pulpit doesn’t work, getting a “well, why vote for him then?”

I stuck wondering if what they want is a left version of Trump, or this is rodent copulation trying to depress voter turnout.

Then there’s the Democratic Socialist types from very safe districts trying to promote other candidates, whilst Democratic Socialists here vote strategically. They do, they really do. That was largely why they loved Bernie, because he promised them the same “I’ll do what I want and Congress will obey or get out of the way” attitude if he was elected. There’s both. You’ve got the Jill Stein/Gary Johnson/Bernie Sanders types who are mad about it because their person doesn’t get any air time, and then there are the ideologues who believe the office of the President is all-powerful and want Biden to just wave his magic President wand and make the Middle East all sunshine, rainbows, and unicorns.

Aka the “Green Lantern Theory of Leadership” that says that the presidency is a matter of will, that a president can do what he likes and it’s all a matter of wanting to do so, thus if a president does not fulfill their wish list then it’s because he doesn’t want to do so and is an actual impediment towards reaching their fantasy world.

Yep, in the same vein, the far-right “Patriots” and far-left “Revolutionaries” like to imagine that when “the people” rise up and overturn the government, those leading the whole thing will magically decide to relinquish the power they achieve and instead simply restore the country but with a new set of governing documents and laws that reflect their idealized future for America. Which is only slightly better than the ones who acknowledge that the result of America falling to a bloody coup will be either a banana republic or a fascist theocracy…but are cool with that because they like to picture themselves as the ones in charge.

i am sort of hoping this is still a lot of early in the season venting of frustration, disagreement, anger etc.

when the time for action (voting) comes around the choice is stark.

while the lesser of two evils may still be an evil in some people’s minds, that doesnt mean you then support the greater evil of the two.

if you dont support biden in the voting booth, if you vote for anyone else (or dont vote for prez) you are not ‘sending a message’. you are actively supporting your own self-described greater evil

Well, I am back home from the hospital after a very exciting weekend. Everyone in the family got it from the grandaughter but ine was epic. As I mentioned, I has something like norovirus last week – Wednesday evening: throwing up, Thursday to Friday: bad diarrhea. Then, while the diarrhea stopped Friday, I had an Afib episode start, likely due to dehydration (I lost almost 10 pounds!) So I drank a lot and I thought was resolving itself but no go. On Sunday I felt awful.

So I went to the emerency room and they were able to shock my heart back into rhythm. But the bood tests had shown something more ominous. My kidney (yes, I only have one) was in sad shape, showing all the signs of acute kidney failure. It had not dealt well with all my body’s water going through my large intestine rather than itself.

Now I had been drinking liquids and had started peeing again so I had not been worried before the tests. Now I was very much so - for those curious, my GFR (how well the kidney is at filtering) was down to 22% of normal! My kidney was not happy but I figured, the doctor agreed and history has shown I was right, that this would correct itrlsef with hydration.

So I spent the night in the hospital getting lots of fluids and today’s tests show I am almost back to normal. I got discharged about noon today and am back home. Gotta drink a lot of fluids and get another bood test in a week,

But a simple stomach bug almost did me in. Crap I hate getting old.

Well, I am back home from the hospital after a very exciting weekend. Everyone in the family got it from the grandaughter but ine was epic. As I mentioned, I has something like norovirus last week – Wednesday evening: throwing up, Thursday to Friday: bad diarrhea. All of this talk is making me wonder if it should either be removed as a holiday or if we should have a committee to decide how it should be handled? Who would be on the committee, and how would you keep it from turning into another instance of performative patriotism? How would you Gold Star families want to see it honored? How would living veterans want to see it honored?

Memorial Day to me is the national equivalent of a funeral, and funerals aren’t about the dead, they are about the living. We go to honor the dead, who are no longer around to receive the honor. So, how should it be carried out?

Supporters of the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol scheduled a march in support of right-wing MAGA activist Ashli Babbitt for Memorial Day.

For the second year in a row, MAGA followers planned to gather in Washington, D.C. to march in remembrance of Babbitt, who was shot to death after breaking into the Capitol on Jan. 6.

The way I would have it is return it to May 30. Break its association with “long weekend” and “beach.” That’s the position of various veteran organisations.

At my funeral I’ve said I want an Irish folk band or bluegrass band, and free beer at the community centre.

Belafon  May 27, 2024 • 2:41:02pm

A number of my fellow CERT members participate in Carry the Load, an event started here in Dallas by a veteran who (according to his story) was feeling down one Memorial Day when he was asked by someone else whose load he was carrying. That started an event that became a longer and longer walk that is now a multi-day multi-stage walk by groups from different directions that end in Dallas. The last leg coming from the East passes through Rockwall at one in the morning on Memorial Day (so this morning).

I personally don’t participate in it, but it might be something a number of you might like. Who the people around here honor changes each year. This year it’s about a former fireman.

I don’t have a good answer, but when I was a kid, the whole family spent the day before picking Iris and Peonies and putting them in water. Then on Memorial Day we went to the two cemeteries in town, cleaned up the graves, and put clean jars loaded with flowers on family graves. We had expanded it to everyone in the family, but with special care for those who had served in the military.

Now, my family members are in cemeteries far away, or not at all, and those cemeteries are the “mow-able” kind, where the markers are buried, and no memorials or flowers are left overnight. They remove them all. It was never a “happy” holiday. It was one of duty. Now I’m just old, and sound like I want everyone off my lawn!

My parents both served overseas during WWII, mother in Europe, father in Asia. AFAIK, only one cousin, who was a pilot, died during the war; another of my mother’s cousins was shot in the face in combat in Europe; he just celebrated his 100th birthday.

My sister will say “Have a meaningful Memorial Day”.

My parents property was about thirty miles north of Red Bluff in Palo Cedro - we had 80 acres that bordered Millville Plains. As a teen, my mother had me drive the pickup back to the plains a couple mines behind us and collect lava rocks (most were bowling ball size) and I probably made 16 such trips. Those rocks I laid side to side in two rows circling the lawn around our house.

Just google mapped it - the house is still there, but the pool’s been replaced by a concrete yard and circular garden. You can still see the original front lawn - back lawn is all trees and shit. House had unobstructed views of Mt. Baldy to the west, Mt Shasta to the north, and Mt Lassen to the east. Mom and dad knew how to pick a spot to build on.

Took 90 minutes to mow front and back when I was a kid…in 100+ degree heat.

Large parts of India swelter under intense heat, 37 cities record temperatures over 45 deg C

Rajasthan’s Phalodi was the hottest place in the country for the second consecutive day, recording a maximum temperature of 49.8 degrees Celsius. A day ago, the city hit 50 degrees Celsius — the highest temperature recorded in the country since June 1, 2019.

There’s a burger joint/smokehouse called Vinny’s in Coos Bay. Delicious brisket and burgers. We have made a trip there at least three times a year specifically to get Vinny’s for lunch. We then go to a local park that’s just a little further down the road from Vinny’s or to Bullards Beach State Park to watch the ocean while we dine.

If you ever get a chance to grab a bite there you’ll always want to come back for more.

That is Salton Trough types of heat, or Death Valley, the only locations in the US that get that hot.

The future is scary for Florida, IMO, but the next couple of decades should still be livable so I think you’ll be fine.

Current sea surface temp anomaly:

SST anomaly map from Copernicus

You can see the La Niña forming in the equatorial Pacific.

You can also see the huge anomaly over the temperate Pacific region.

This is where Hansen et. al. points out that the removal of aerosols from shipping is now causing significant temperature rise.

The baseline temps to calculate the current anomaly are from 1991-2020. The new rules on shipping emissions came into effect starting 2020.

The shipping paths from east Asia to North America is that very same temperate Pacific zone.

So this is the story to follow over the next 5 to 10 years or so, as we try to understand just how dramatically the climate will change over the rest of the century.

Safe & good travels!!!

It’s hot. Danger can advise, but my brother lives in Orlando (inland) & I just don’t stay outside long. Cloudy is easier, blazing sun? Nah.

Funny thing is I lived there till I was 26. I never thought much about the heat. It took moving to a milder climate to make it hard..

Sick freaks.

The motherfathers who tried to implement Trump’s coup got off too easy.

Every one of them should have been locked up for life with no parole and that includes the Doughty Pantload himself and his Congressional stooges who engaged in the coup.

Trump Just Sold His $10M Jet to One of His Megadonors

The sale, executed earlier this month, was reportedly worth about $10 million.

After nearly half a billion dollars in legal judgments against him this year, Donald Trump’s company opted to offload one of his private jets this month, public filings show. And the buyer is a Republican megadonor who poured nearly $250,000 into a political committee tied to Trump’s 2020 campaign.

The plane, a 1997 Cessna jet, is worth in the range of $10 million, according to evoJets, though terms of the transaction couldn’t be confirmed.

Federal Aviation Administration records show that on May 13, the aircraft’s registration changed from the Trump Organization’s DT Air Corp to a Texas entity called MM Fleet Holdings LLC. State records tie that company to Mehrdad Moayedi, an Iranian-American construction and development tycoon who lives near Dallas and runs Centurion American Custom Homes.

According to his biography, Moayedi founded his company in 1990 and has since built thousands of homes. Centurion says it partners with both public and private entities.

Moayedi is also a Trump donor. Federal campaign finance data show that in 2019 and 2020, he gave a combined $245,000 to Trump Victory—a committee that raised money for the Trump campaign, the Republican National Committee, and state GOP parties—sending the maximum allowable $5,600 contribution to the campaign.

Moayedi has also given hundreds of thousands of dollars in support of other GOP candidates and committees, including the RNC, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), and Nikki Haley. In 2022, the developer made a maximum primary donation of $2,900 to Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, an Arizona independent who has raked in big bucks from the real estate industry and is accused by some Democrats of being overly accommodating to Republicans.

Don’t know how many of you have experienced outdoor temp of 50C.

That is Salton Trough types of heat, or Death Valley, the only locations in the US that get that hot.

I was out in Imperial County many years ago, south of the Salton Sea, and it was 50C. Good thing I had rated tires on the BMW because the road temps were even hotter of course.

It hit fifty in Phoenix before.

i am sort of hoping this is still a lot of early in the season venting of frustration, disagreement, anger etc.

when the time for action (voting) comes around the choice is stark.

while the lesser of two evils may still be an evil in some people’s minds, that doesnt mean you then support the greater evil of the two.

if you dont support biden in the voting booth, if you vote for anyone else (or dont vote for prez) you are not ‘sending a message’. you are actively supporting your own self-described greater evil

today’s electoral-vote.com
Nate Cohn Finally Adds the Asterisk

The election projections (including ours) will not begin to attain any semblance of accuracy until September or so, once people begin to figure out answers to these questions: (1) Am I actually going to vote? and (2) If so, which candidate am I actually going to vote for? Right now, there is so much uncertainty on those points that the presidential polling numbers have to be analyzed with care to extract any true meaning.
