Ayn Rand's Thought of the Day:
"Do not use foreign words in narrative to show your erudition. Phonies like to stud their conversation with foreign words. If you do that in narrative, you, the author, will sound like a phony."
-- Ayn Rand, The Art of Fiction.
Ralph Puke of the comedy team of Puke and Snot used to make fun of such phonies by using foreign words, of specifically French origin, in an attempt to seduce a female member of the audience, and catastrophically failing in the process.
I strongly suspect that Rand is also commenting on a bad habit of the late conservative author William F. Buckley, Jr. I personally found it very annoying when Buckley used a foreign word or phrase, without translating it, in the articles that he wrote for National Review. If someone is speaking to their fellow citizens then they should use the common language of their nation.
I understand that there are some Leftists who also indulge in this bad habit.

I could use some Dutch-Googlin' help with locating and translating online "primary documents" related to this: A Dutch chapter in AIDS Prevention that almost nobody's heard of.
Although this chapter began in 1985 and ended by the early '90s (for reasons entirely rooted in "queer" ideology and PC non-judgmentalism), I believe this story is absolutely essentially to tell today -- because it is very much entwined with such current problems as the rapidly collapsing taboo against "barebacking" among gay/bi men. (The medical consequences of which are subsidized by YOUR tax dollars.)

Great news watch:
Once again, taxpayers confirm that taxing the bejeebus out of the rich will result in lower tax revenues.
The new report from the Division of Budget shows trends combining to create a $2.1 billion deficit just three months after the budget was adopted for the current fiscal year. It also projects a four-year shortfall of $13 billion more than previously forecast.``Although the budget enacted in April took substantial action to close a combined $20.1 billion budget gap, the fact remains that revenues have continued to fall, and this will force us to make further difficult choices,'' Gov. David Paterson said.
Paterson plans to present a revised budget to the Legislature in September, and said he wants to focus on spending cuts.
State Budget Director Robert Megna said the recovery would be slow and would lag behind the national recovery by months.
The report indicates the state recession will end sometime in the second half of 2010, a bit later than previously believed.
Job losses in the state are expected to continue into next year and the unemployment rate to peak at 9.1 percent in the spring of 2010. Since August, New York has lost 236,000 jobs. The state unemployment rate last month stood at 8.7 percent.
The state's solution? To raise those taxes even further. Unemployment is expected to continue rising and recovery not coming until second half of 2010. That's not some talking heads on MSNBC or CNBC or Fox. That's the NYS OMB coming up with that cheery picture.
We now return to our regularly scheduled beer goggle.

Great news watch:
Once again, taxpayers confirm that taxing the bejeebus out of the rich will result in lower tax revenues.
It's the "luxury tax kills the yacht industry" story all over again.
A Joint Economic Committee study later found that 330 jobs in the jewelry industry and 7,600 jobs in the yacht industry were lost thanks to the luxury tax. Perhaps the greatest irony was that in 1991 the federal government paid out over $7 million more in unemployment benefits to those workers than it collected in luxury tax revenues.

Obama will spin it to his advantage, the press will gleefully report his racial "peace brokering", and the cop will go back to work. I will eat a mouse pad if I'm wrong.

I knew someone who couldn't wear watches. Whenever she put on a working watch, it stopped functioning. It was really odd.
Is that what happens to you?
Yes. Before cell phones became easily portable, I used a pocket watch, and carried it in my coat.
I finally gave up, and I even carry my beloved Palm Treo in my purse, well away from my body.

The whole event is a massive spin exercise. It's designed to divert attention away from 0bama's idiotic "I don't have all the facts, but the police are stupid" comment, and channel it on to an entirely different topic. It's an attempt to talk about something - anything - else, and leave 0's prejudicial knee spasm in the dust.
I wouldn't mind seeing Gates directly address the whole "profiling" issue with Crowley. As long as Crowley then directly questions 0bama on his rush to judgment and labeling of cops as "stupid" without knowing all the facts.
But that's not going to happen.
Second choice: I'd like to see Gates show up drunk, screaming about "crackers" and throw up on a Secret Service agent before passing out and crushing a prized rose specimen on the way down. Which has as much chance of happening as my first suggested outcome.

Courtesy of Tom Payton who wrote verses 1 through 4 around 1977 while involved in Revolutionary War re-enacting. He was also involved in SCA, Civil War, Wicca and had friends who played rugby, so the song inevitably spread, and many, many verses have been added over the years.
When I was a young lad I used to like girls,
I'd play with their corsets and fondle their curls.
'Till one day, my lady I caught with some churl,
Now you'd never get treated that way by a moose.
Chorus
Moose, moose, I likes a moose,
I've never had anything quite like a moose.
I've had lots of lovers, my life has been loose,
But I've never had anything quite like a moose.
Now when I'm in mood for a very good lay,
I go to my closet and get me some hay.
I go to my window and spread it around.
'Cause moose always come when there's hay on the ground.
Chorus...
Gorillas are all right on Saturday night,
Lions and tigers, they puts up a fight.
But it's just not the same when you slam your caboose,
As the feeling you get when you humps with a moose.
Chorus
I've done it with beasties with long flowing hair,
I'd do it with snakes if their fangs were not there.
I've done it with walrus, a monkey, and goose,
But it's just not the same when you screw with a moose.
Chorus
Now that I am old and advanced in my years,
I look back on my life and shed me no tears.
As I sit in my chair with my glass of Matheus,
Playing Hide-The-Salami with Melba the Moose.
Chorus...

LOL. Your dog hasn't been spending wildly has he? As to used yacht sales going up, I'm afraid not. If you already had a yacht the tax increase didn't matter, in fact it was an incentive to not buy a new one. What happened is that the rich aren't stupid, they bought their yachts elsewhere.

The brief presser also provided evidence of the One's self-professed "profound humility":
A Philippine journalist asked each leader his or her impression of the other. Arroyo called Obama "cordial, warm, and welcoming."
Obama joked, "I'm sure she thinks I'm much younger looking than she expected."
In her response, Arroyo made her answer all about Obama. No one's surprised that Obama did the same.Your text to link...

I personally don't think Crowley was wrong, but it does kind of stink that she was vilified, when she was actually reluctant to describe the people she saw in terms of race - and then left out of this gathering.
As a high school kid in the late seventies, I was a member of my state's honors choir. There was one black student in the tenor section.
One day, he didn't show up for rehearsal at camp. Realizing one person was missing (but not having seen us before), the conductor asked the other ninety-nine people to tell him who was missing from the tenor section, and no one - not a single person - described the missing student as African-American. It was, "Well, he's six feet tall..." and other descriptors, but even though he was easily identified by race, everyone was too afraid to simply describe him as the African-American student...as though it was an insult or something.
And that was almost thirty years ago.

I read a story about her today, she has been laying low.
I am starting to think half the people in this country are deranged.
Two people look like they are breaking in, and she calls the cops.
So in the eyes of lunatics, she must be a racist, and should behunghanged.
Sorry, pet peeve.

CNN just showed the 'extraordinary' video.
Nothing says 'This a completely sincere attempt at reconciling the two parties and not a cheap attempt at publicity or attention-whoring' like the occasional cameraman swooping in and out of the camera's view accompanied the the staccato rapid-fire clicking of hundreds of camera-shutters simulatneously clicking...

That's a pretty telling statement on the state of race relations. When one side gets tongue tied even describing another race for fear of offending someone, you know that something is seriously fucked up.

Yeah, I thought so. I sat there mute myself, of course, but that incident stayed with me more than any other experience connected to being in that choir. And this was Wisconsin, with representatives from all over the state...generally where most would assume people aren't especially over-sensitive about things like that.

Koalas live on eucalyptus leaves, so koala meat tastes like a very strong cough drop.
Hey, if you made Filipino-style egg rolls filled with shredded koala meat, you could call 'em "Koala Lumpi-urs"!

You should not keep peeves as pets. They cannot be domesticated and are happier in the wild. I know-- I freed mine years ago.
