Dan Rather Calls on Obama to Save the Media

The irrepressible Dan Rather wants President Barack Obama to form a commission and save the media.

Former CBS News anchor Dan Rather called on President Barack Obama to form a White House commission to help save the press Tuesday night in an impassioned speech at the Aspen Institute.

“I personally encourage the president to establish a White House commission on public media,” the legendary newsman said.

Such a commission on media reform, Rather said, ought to make recommendations on saving journalism jobs and creating new business models to keep news organizations alive. At stake, he argued, is the very survival of American democracy.

“A truly free and independent press is the red beating heart of democracy and freedom,” Rather said in an interview yesterday afternoon. “This is not something just for journalists to be concerned about, and the loss of jobs and the loss of newspapers, and the diminution of the American press’ traditional role of being the watchdog on power. This is something every citizen should be concerned about.”

The irony is glacier-thick; this is the guy who was caught red-handed pushing obviously phony documents on his 60 Minutes show, in an outrageous attempt to affect a presidential election in the final days before the vote.

The article by Andrew Travers in the Aspen Daily News does not even mention this little indiscretion, of course.

Speaking at the posh Aspen Meadows resort in Colorado, Dan the Phony Document Man was so torn up at the predicament of the press that he began to weep.

Nice to see that you're still keeping yourself busy all these months after trying to pass off completely bogus documents as the real deal. How'd that work out for you and the rest of the industry, which tries to this day to ignore the fact that the media was trying to throw the 2004 election for Kerry and against President Bush.

Now, you want the government to help out the industry? Yeah, how about saving the industry from itself first - by treating the news objectively instead of pushing opinion journalism as news. How about treating political scandals objectively and fairly - name that party anyone?

How about adhering to the very codes of conduct that the various media outlets espouse to hold aloft as signs of their primacy as providers of information? You know - like sourcing stories and providing facts instead of pushing agendas?

How about respecting national security instead of trying to play gotcha journalism with a politician to score points?

Oh, I could go on, but everyone else gets the idea. I just know that you wouldn't (and don't).

Have there been many, if any, stories praising the troops for turning over to Iraqis the responsiblity for their own security, or just the constant blather of "bring the troops home"?

Indeed. My wife just bought a policy from BCBS for about $350/mo... less than half of what she was paying American Community for her old policy. One difference is that the new policy doesn't cover mental illness and pregnancy related care ... neither of which, I'm happy to say, is an issue for us. But to get the new policy, she had to sign off on those issues in a special waiver required by the state. Some time ago, I remember hearing discussion of requiring such coverage on all policies as a part of the new health care "reform".

One third of my business comes from regulation from government. I'm happy to have it, but it's a big load on insurance companies and their clients.

Sure, being a child of the '60s I saw a lot of subjective "New" Journalism, and did a fair amount of it myself, but that kind of writing, like columns and editorials, was supposed to be segregated from "real" reporting, and, at least in mainstream media, usually was. The same was true for the emerging blogosphere, which by its very nature was opinionated and biased.

But my complacent faith in my peers first began to be shaken when some of the most admired journalists in the country were exposed as plagiarists, or worse, accused of making up stories from whole cloth.

I'd spent my entire professional career scrupulously pounding out endless dreary footnotes and double-checking sources to make sure that I never got accused of lying or stealing someone else's work -- not out of any native honesty, but out of fear: I'd always been told to fake or steal a story was a firing offense … indeed, it meant being blackballed out of the profession.

And yet, few of those worthies ever seemed to get fired for their crimes -- and if they did they were soon rehired into even more prestigious jobs. It seemed as if there were two sets of rules: one for us workaday journalists toiling out in the sticks, and another for folks who'd managed, through talent or deceit, to make it to the national level.

If the MSM is dying, then helping it along would be in our best interests as a nation. Let the true reporters and journalists emerge.

I worked with a woman who had to complete and send in her section's monthly vehicle reports, which included miles travelled, amount of gasoline purchased, and average MPG for the month.

She insisted the MPG figures had to be wrong because each month, there was some of last month's gasoline left over in the gas tanks.

The problem stems from the 1960s and Cronkite was a big part of making it happen with his Vietnam is lost speech. Once the media realized they could in fact influence current events instead of just reporting on them, they lost any credibility. It just snowballed over the years and Rather was the result. I worked with a woman who had to complete and send in her section's monthly vehicle reports, which included miles travelled, amount of gasoline purchased, and average MPG for the month.

Once the media realized they could in fact influence current events instead of just reporting on them, they lost any credibility. It just snowballed over the years and Rather was the result. They truly believe they know what is best for America and by golly they are going to make it happen.

This is exactly what I mean when I say that the establishment media are not the free press of the Founding Fathers, but an un-elected and unaccountable shadow government.

It also goes to portability. Some states don't want to accept insurance plans that were approved elsewhere because they're not nearly as comprehensive (and therefore not nearly as expensive).

Instead of opening up more competition that would drive down prices and let more people get health insurance, this is a limiting factor.

Take a look at economic news on all the outlets, every day it's conflicting data and stories. Apropos this thread, many in the media and their "experts" are opining on the economy, no one really has a clue.

One is a long range outlook, while short term doesn't jibe. Funny, but even Obama is downplaying the fact that the recession is over (via Newsweek, which Obama slammed for its cover saying that the recession is over).

For every data point that you say shows that the economy is perking up, I could find one that shows things are getting worse - or not improving.

The single biggest factor showing that the economic outlook is poor - the booming and looming federal deficit. At some point, those who extended credit to the US will come a calling, and that will mean inflation is a distinct possibility.

The last thing I am saying is that bias is anything new. The whole idea of an objective, neutral press would have been quite alien to the Founding Fathers. It is an impossibility, in fact; but the pretense of neutrality, originated by wire services in the 19th century, led to unlimited authority and power and to the abuse of that power. Where the current media differ from the traditional free press is in the attempt to conceal their agenda. This sub rosa exercise of influence is what empowers them, since their various styles of influence will not work if the purpose is stated openly.

This is not a pickle recipe. It's a recipe for bread-and-butter pickle relish. I slice about 30 cukes and dice eight large onions and bell peppers. I mix them with 1/2 cup of salt, cover it all in ice then stick it in the fridge over night. The next day, I drain it all and then boil five cups of vinegar, five cups of sugar, one tsp. of tumeric, 1/2 tsp. of cloves, 1 Tbs. celery seed, one Tbs. ginger and two Tbs. mustard seed. Then, I add the veggies and heat it through without boiling. Then, I put it into sterilized jars.

It's awesome with peas.

Same thing happened then that happened under Bush 43.

Westmoreland, McNamara, Rostow et al ran around telling everyone "We're winning, we're winning, looky here, we've got all the metrics" and then the VC did something that the US brass had been saying for years was impossible. It was a military failure, but it finally brought to the surface Middle America's suspicion that the poobahs had been lying.

We had the same situation in Iraq - a fraction of the force necessary to control the place, leadership more concerned with avoiding casualties than getting the job done, trying to sell people on cherry-picked bits of progress while things go to hell off-screen. Bush gets a few points for finally clearing out Rumsfeld and bringing in new brass, but a man more confident in his leadership and expertise would have done it three years earlier. And someone who understood use of military force would NEVER have agreed to go in with 150K troopers in the first place.

Challenge: find an positive article about the economy on a right wing blog today. The Dow is up, somebody out there has got to be covering it.

It is not bias per se that is the problem, it is the increasingly ludicrous pretense of being unbiased.

Keep in mind that Rather's sleazy doc ploy was based on a fundamental deception: The pretense that he was an objective, neutral observer reporting vital news to the people. If a known and acknowledged Democratic party operative had produced the same documents, the chance of it actually throwing the election would have been zero. With Rather's implicit claim of objectivity to give it credibility, it almost changed history.

Back in the 70s and 80s, I would amuse myself by tracking how anti-US-military propaganda would migrate from Red Star(an official Soviet publication) to the Daily Worker to various talking heads on CBS and the other alphabet networks. Striking examples that I remember include a claim that the proposed space station (today's ISS) was actually intended as a command and control center for "Star Wars" and a series of articles about massive environmental damage and sunken fishing boats being attributable to US submarine activity.
Coming from Red Star, these would be laughed at by the American public. Coming from CBS, they were something else altogether.

What they wanted was a press free from censorship and government control. They knew full well the reach and influence of the printed word and could have easily foreseen how progress would only compound it. Likewise, there had always been papers with particular points of view. You knew exactly where the paper stood because of its publisher's particular bent. Thsi carried over into the broadcast word and the TV images. Again, bias is nothing new.

What is new is that the myth of "impartiality". The media has tried to sell that one for years and no one is really buying it anymore. It was refreshing--though not surprising--when NBC endorsed BHO last fall. The network no longer makes a pretense of where it stands.

To be honest, math is hard for some of us. I fell behind around second grade. Somehow, I was not placed in the correct math class and I arrived in 5th grade a few years later with no idea that such a thing as multiplication existed. I was given a times table and told to get with the program. Because I excelled in other areas, no one thought I needed any more help than that. I eventually figured it out, but it poisoned my experience with math for years. It was never easy or intuitive for me and I avoided it as much as possible. One of the happiest days of my life was when the adviser at the college I graduated from said my transfer credit in statistics was enough to fulfill my graduation requirement. No more math!

Inflation being created with economic growth is ok as long as it does not get out of control. The Fed needs to raise interest rates when this happens. If they keep the rates in cartoonish multiple decimal point near zero land, we are in deep shit. If inflation starts rolling in with no growth, we are in deeper shit.

I respect KT on many issues, but he did spend an entire afternoon arguing with us claiming that treasury bonds were not government debt, so I part company with him here.

I used to work as a cashier at a grocery store. Its sad how far downhill cashiers have come in the last 20 or so years. I don't like to carry around a lot of change so I'll often add a couple coins to the bill(s) I am paying with to get in return an an even dollar amount or, just quarters in change. Heaven help me if I do this after the cashier has entered the bill I am paying with already. Usually confuses the hell out of them...

And from what I've seen, most people lose their interest in math in elementary school. And from what I've seen, most people lose their interest in math in elementary school. They are taught by teachers who often (not always, but often) went the route of elementary ed so they didn't have to worry with math. They share their frustration with math with their students, accidently in most cases.

I was working ahead in math textbooks in second grade and they *stopped* me because I was going to get out of hand.

While I was so far ahead in reading in first grade, they had to bring over books from the upper elementary school for me. In fact, that's why they put me, as a 2nd grader, in a 3rd-4th grade class at the upper elementary school, and probably why I got lost in math.

I'm a mechanical engineer, meaning I've completed through Differential Equations. Even so, I can vouch for this statement. Many of my peers had to re-take the upper level math courses more than once to get a passing grade.

What kind of inginer are you that you didn't have to take Engineering Math 401 and 402? Differential Equations were Sophmore level at the engineering school I went to. After Diff-E-Qs, I decided I would not become an engineer due to having to take a course more difficult than Math 208. It was horrid. I was lost on the first page of the little tiny book when they said that it was easy to derive the 7 variable, 16 stage equation into one that was upper level Calculus. I had to work my way backwards to see where they came up with it. Basic calculators only. No preprogrammed formula ones.

In non-fast food restaurants, that same thing happens all the time to me. They do it on purpose. The waiter/waitress wants to make sure you have plenty of ones to leave as a tip.

It drives me crazy when I make it clear that I don't want ones as she did and still get them. Good wait staff should be thinking about what the customer wants, not what will get them a good tip. Usually it works out better for them that way anyways...

The ton of money taken out of the market as well as the ton of money being printed has exerted an inordinate amount of upward pressure on the stock market. Add to that the low interest rate on other investments such as bonds and the market will rise on the slightest good news, such as the cap and trade bill being stopped or health care reform being postponed. The real bad news will come when the resulting high inflation and high interest rates kick in. They have to finance the risky debt somehow, the Chinese wont accept a minuscule rate of return forever and they will also have to print more money to finance the new trillions in debt from the porkulus bill. Things are going to get much worse, in this case the market is only a short term leading indicator of things to come.

Mechanical. It's probably a matter of different schools labelling the math courses differently. As far as I know, the only degrees requiring completion of math above the level I completed are actual Mathematics degrees and graduate level physics degrees.

Also, requirements may have changed. I got my degree 14 years ago.

See, I don't really know much about economics. But it seems certain that there is a point at which running the printing machines is suicidal, and another point at which it is trivial. I will agree that most of them are more likely to point at the negative economic articles rather than the positive as they were wont to do when Bush was in office. It is a minor form of hypocrisy that in the end could turn out to hurt their biggest donors. Talking down the economy has now become the bent of certain talk show hosts.

And that's one of the things I think is most wrong with the typical public school. Have you encountered "mastery learning" with your kids? In its purest form, the entire class is held back until the very last kid understands the material. My younger daughter was taught math that way in elementary school, but the kids were pre-tested and tracked for ability prior to each unit. Without tracking, it's a nightmare for the average-to-bright kids.

(from mine) How about the fact that home prices are now coming back in line with historical pricing - making them far more affordable so long as the government doesn't screw things up and attempt to make foreclosures more difficult - a driving force in correcting prices in overheated markets.

Housing prices aren't the end-all, but the more affordable they are without any other government programs to distort the markets and artificially create demand, the better and healthier the market is.

Sales may be down from historic highs, but that too is a good thing because the sales factor was artificially created with unreasonably low interest rates and pressure from Congress to lenders to issue loans to those who couldn't afford to repay.

No, thank goodness. My kids are out of school. They tried to segregate the more math-capable kids for a while in junior high to see if they could learn at their own pace, but I got tripped up by percentages because the books taught three different formulas instead of just one and showed how to manipulate the one equation to find the other two. Someone who was a true math teacher might have been able to see this and teach me, but we had someone babysit us who, again, didn't have any math ability.

I tried desperately with my kids to teach them enough math at home that they wouldn't have trouble in school. I actually taught my daughter pre-algebra over the summer so she could start in algebra in the fall. She didn't like me as a teacher. :D

You were allowed to use a calculator?!?!?! Dang, I went to school just a couple years too early. Funny how I can do the advanced math correctly, but still get the answer wrong because I'll trip over the basic arithmetic.

As a State employee who does not get cost of living adjustments and who's compensation has been frozen for several years, on top of recent required furloughs to balance the budget. Inflation of any kind scares the stuffing out of me. Actually nobody took me up on my challenge to find a right wing site discussing good economic news. Fox Business page actually isn't too bad. They're covering today's surge on the market, the treasury auction and the possibility of economic recovery.

The quickest way out of debt would be to Boom the economy. There are a few ways to do that across several sectors:

1. Cut gov't red tape on nuclear energy
2. allow more offshore drilling
3. Coast to Coast high speed freight rail
4. Open some land in the West for homesteading
5. Deregulate Shipping and Ship building
6. Allow commercial nuclear powered shipping
7. Revise what's conventional and non conventional for FHA loans with an eye toward new century building.
8. Electrify all interstates

Those are just a few I came up with that in less than two minutes. All have potential regardless of what naysayers might coo about.

No, thank goodness. My kids are out of school. They tried to segregate the more math-capable kids for a while in junior high to see if they could learn at their own pace, but I got tripped up by percentages because the books taught three different formulas instead of just one and showed how to manipulate the one equation to find the other two. Someone who was a true math teacher might have been able to see this and teach me, but we had someone babysit us who, again, didn't have any math ability.

I tried desperately with my kids to teach them enough math at home that they wouldn't have trouble in school. I actually taught my daughter pre-algebra over the summer so she could start in algebra in the fall. She didn't like me as a teacher. :D

It sounds like "learn at your own pace," in practice, became "we don't have anyone qualified to teach you." When I got bored, they gave me extra book reports to do. I got so disenchanted with academics that I barely passed high school.

It's very lucky you had the ability to give your kids the extra attention in math. I wish you'd been around when I was homeschooling my oldest and neither one of us understood it. ;)

Rasmussen predicted the last election better than Gallup and they have BHO @ 48%. I know Rasmussen looks at likely voters which has tended to be more accurate...don't know what Gallup uses, but Gallup has always been a few points higher than Rasmussen.

So many people were used to calculating sines, cosines, and tangents using calculators that when they had to use tables to find values on the normal or chi-squared distributions they had to be taught from scratch how to use them.

Funny, fractions are one thing I'm pretty good at. I can factor the heck out of a fraction and reduce it like crazy.

As we're talking about math phobia and innumeracy, it occurs to me that the best thing that ever happened to my math skills was playing cards with my dad. He got very impatient when I was slow at counting up my cards, so he taught me to make tens by pairing the cards - 4 +6 =10, 3+7 = 10, etc. My basic arithmetic skills got much better after that because I started looking for shortcuts and found my own way to do things.

The Left never gave Bush any credit for lack of another attack on American soil after 9/11. Very credible people said that it was a certainty.

I had one good teacher who taught us all sorts of tricks for adding and multiplying quickly; how to easily find 15% tips; how to determine if a number is divisible by 3, etc. Very useful skills that should be taught to every single person.

If I recall, last time around there were a lot of assumptions about higher turnout among youth, black/minority and other typical democratic demographics, but none of that really materialized. I think Rasmussen stuck to his model of likely voters and it proved to still be accurate.

I also know there were some other concerns about telephone polls and a larger percentage of younger voters who use their cell phone as their primary phone, but I don't think that really materialized either.

Yes, that's something else that calculator-centric kids can't understand: that they may have answer but it may be completely meaningless. They can't determine what is a proper result or, as in the case you mention, how many decimal places are reasonable and could be accurate.

One very important thing it teaches you is approximately what number to expect, you have to know what ball park the answer will be in. Too many people (including newbie engineers) don't do this and blindly trust the value displayed on the calculator which can often be wrong due to a bad keystroke. In the first chemistry class I took in college slide rules were mandatory.

I was in college around the time programmable calculators first hit the scene. My chemistry prof had a test where he announced moments before the test that calculators would not be allowed, and that you didn't have to actually compute the results to the problems. Just set up the equations and say what variables you would solve for or otherwise detail how the result could be found. About 2/3 of the class failed as they had all programmed the formulas they were supposed to memorize into their calculators. Fortunately, I had an older calculator and had to actually learn the material.

Mechanical. It's probably a matter of different schools labelling the math courses differently. As far as I know, the only degrees requiring completion of math above the level I completed are actual Mathematics degrees and graduate level physics degrees.

Also, requirements may have changed. I got my degree 14 years ago.

I got my degree in 91 from a school specializing in Mining, Geological and Petroleum Engineering. No Mechanical Engineers. The only engineering program they had that did not require math past the diffeq level was the Environmental Engineers.
It wasn't really the math that kept me from going for the engineer degree, it was the damn Chemistry table. Never liked it. Was always afraid of it. Chemiphobia? I could have stayed in college for one more year and gotten a math degree as well as the CS. I needed the 400 level math, two physics labs and upper level physics. Of course, by the time I was done with them, I'd only need a few engineering classes to be an engineer and so on and so on and so on.

I scored in the 95th percentile on the verbal portion of the GRE and the 17th on the math portion. Fractions make no sense to me at all.

If fractions make no sense then the term "percentile" should not mean anything to you: it's a fraction.

I watched a movie back in the 60's that had something similar. Newspapers losing business. A reporter who reported facts on the local government people who happened to be friends with the editor, had to attend a class on journalism. The instructor was telling the students to make people happy and tell what was wanted to be heard. The "crusty reporter" got hot and told the instructor that the only way a newspaper could stay in business and be competitive was to hold to three tenants of being a reporter. The three tenants were, are, and always be, "Accuracy, Accuracy, and Accuracy." I feel that if this were pounded into the heads of reporters, editors, commentators, anyone in the news business that the newspapers would have a lot larger following.

Me, neither. But Swaggart fascinates me. I'm always intrigued by people who are both sincere and wildly hypocritical. How one would write that so it makes some kind of psychological sense? I'm not that good.

So does Dan Rather want a free and independent press, or does he want the press to be in debt to the government? Or is he just counting on all of us being too stupid to recognize that you can't have both? I thought it was the job of a journalist to expose dishonesty, not to propagate it. Mr. Rather evidently thinks otherwise.
