CNN just showed the 'extraordinary' video.
Nothing says 'This a completely sincere attempt at reconciling the two parties and not a cheap attempt at publicity or attention-whoring' like the occasional cameraman swooping in and out of the camera's view accompanied the the staccato rapid-fire clicking of hundreds of camera-shutters simulatneously going off...

In some of my songs i have casually mentioned
The fact that i like to drink beer
This little song is more to the point
Roll out the barrel and lend me your ears
(Chorus:)
I like beer. it makes me a jolly good fellow
I like beer. it helps me unwind and sometimes it makes me feel mellow (makes him feel mellow)
Whiskey's too rough, champagne costs too much, vodka puts my mouth in gear
This little refrain should help me explain as a matter of fact i like beer
(he likes beer)
My wife often frowns when we're out on the town
And i'm wearing a suit and a tie
She's sipping vermouth and she thinks i'm uncouth
When i yell as the waiter goes by
like beer. it makes me a jolly good fellow
I like beer. it helps me unwind and sometimes it makes me feel mellow (makes him feel mellow)
Whiskey's too rough, champagne costs too much, vodka puts my mouth in gear
This little refrain should help me explain as a matter of fact i like beer
(he likes beer)
Last night i dreamed that i passed from the scene
And i went to a place so sublime
Aw, the water was clear and tasted like beer
Then they turned it all into wine
I like beer. it makes me a jolly good fellow
I like beer. it helps me unwind and sometimes it makes me feel mellow (makes him feel mellow)
Whiskey's too rough, champagne costs too much, and vodka puts my mouth in gear
Aw, this little refrain should help me explain as a matter of fact i love beer
(yes, he likes beer)

There was profiling here, no doubt. Obama just knew the white cop had to be in the wrong. I like what VDH had to say:
Recently, Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates got into a spat with a white policeman who arrested him in his own home for disorderly conduct. Gates immediately cried racism. He argued that his own plight was emblematic of the burdens that the black underclass endures daily from a racist white America. But Gates is one of the highest-paid humanities professors in the United States. And Gates — not the middle-class Cambridge, Mass., white cop — engaged in shouting and brought up race. Within hours, the African-American mayor of Cambridge, the African-American governor of Massachusetts, and the African-American president of the United States all rallied to their chum’s side.
Yet this well-connected, well-paid Harvard resident apparently wants us to believe that he is living under something like the United States of many decades ago.

Actually - it's happened more than once. Once I was on vacation and arrived at the condo we were booked to stay. I had the keys, but they didn't give me the key to the screen doors. The screen doors were both locked. We called security ourselves so as to avoid an uncomfortable situation.
What makes Gates a jerk is that the woman who called 9/11 and the police were simply doing what they thought was right.

If the police showed up at my house after I just got caught breaking in I would thank him/them for coming and protecting my property. (Also my neighbor would recognize me because I'm not the sort of prick who doesn't know his neighbors).
Instead apparently a Harvard professor doesn't have enough common sense to be civil with police showing up to possibly protect him and his family in his home. Instead he thanks the officer by insulting the guys mother and making a national incident out of it with the help of his friend the POTUS.

Had my own encounter w/the law that I posted about last week.
I wasn't hostile, I just wanted to know why the deputy had showed up at my place seemingly out of the blue. By co-operating with him, I got my answer.
Imagine how differently that situation would've turned out if I behaved like
UrkelSkip Gates.
Thanks for re-posting.

It wasn't supposed to actually resolve anything. It was simply a feelgood dog and pony show. Crowley couldn't gracefully decline the invitation, and Obama and Gates had their own agendas. Biden probably decided to show up because the sun was out and it seemed like a nice day for a picnic with the boss.
I think Obama was hoping it would resolve some things. He wanted this to be a teaching moment, but for whom, he did not specify. Was it Gates? One can rule that out since of everyone involved, Gates seems not to have learned a thing except that screaming racism garners attention. Was it for Obama, himself, probably not. He is too narcissistic to be introspective when it comes to his own behavior. So, that leaves Crowley. The guy whom Gates stated he'd run through sensitivity training.
Also, Obama wanted to turn the heat off the entire situation because it has opened a can of worms for him politically.

Hi there Hoosier Hoops! {{{Hoops}}}
Doing well here except for no job yet. I'll know within two weeks if I have a job with the school district or not. If not plan B goes into full swing...and plan C if necessary!
Wishing you best of luck! Remember last year when we would all meet for coffee early in the morning and talk about life in the group? Miss you and someday we'll all be doing the Kona and french cream again.
Kind regards

Geez Louise! You'd think Obama could at least send Biden out to the 7-11 for some nachos or something.
Maybe Obama wanted him there because Biden's the only one there who has out gaffed him. Maybe.

Bud Light... possibly the worst or second-worst (Coors Light is the other) of the "Light" beers.
At least the Sam Adams Light that Prof. Gates chose has some flavor.

OT - to my fellow California lizards:
California drought over saving Delta smelt
However, his particular scene of devastation, Mr. Allen argues, has nothing to do with the credit crisis, the housing crash or the downturn that has California in a vice grip.
It has to do with a seven-centimetre-long, semi-translucent, steel blue fish known as the Delta smelt.
This is not a story about fish. Rather, it is a story about how efforts to save the fish through a court-ordered water shortage have pushed a region already brought to the brink by recession over the edge.
A court-ordered water shortage. Only in California. Unfreakin' believable.

You might be right. Politicians have asserted we peons are responsible for GW. What they failed to tell us is that the courts can order droughts; like to see them issue a court-order for rain.

I am thrilled to see this next evolutionary step in the Great Dialogue on Race started by President Clinton. It's gone from the open forums rich with public debate to where citizens freely and casually sit around in the backyard with a beer and chat about how their race is a major factor in their everyday behaviors and decision making.

I hope Sgt. Crowley got the "friends and family" discount on the beer. A police officer makes a lot less than those other guys; it'd be wrong if they charged him full retail for it.

You'd think the president would have more pressing issues to deal with. OK, maybe he was caught off guard and spoke too soon before the facts were in. So what? Admit the error and move on.

1. Why's Biden there? (Link to print coverage with photo.) Unfair to Crowley. He's outnumbered 3 to 1, and he's the one in the most unfamiliar situation.
2. It was 86° when this happened — the hottest time of the day — and Crowley and Gates are in dark suits and ties? When it was decided that this would be a picnic-table setting, why didn't they ensure that the invited guests dress for the casual environment? Biden and Obama are in shirt sleeves, which isn't appropriate either, but they are at least cooler. Nothing like making the guests comfortable. This doesn't even give the remote appearance of a bunch of guys having a beer.
etc...
yeah. why?

re: #528 FrogMarch
It's all about the photo op. That's why they're outside, and not even in the shade, on a July afternoon in DC. And Gates and Crowley are both smarter to keep their jackets on - if you were them, would you want to risk nationally distributed photos of you with sweat stains?
re: #531 ianmc
Again, I think it's about the photo op. Somebody at the WH probably said, hey, we can't have it look like Obama and Gates are ganging up on Crowley. Biden's white, so let's have him join the group and balance it out. Because to this WH, it's all about race.
Sadly.

re: #38 Beach Lover
why do they have to sit outside anyway? This whole thing makes no sense to me. I would feel slighted. Its Crowley's house as much as Obama's.
This whole thing is a SNL skit waiting to happen. The drinking getting out of control and a brawl breaking out. Then Crowley demands to see Obama's I.D. and arrests him in the White House for disorderly conduct. And then Obama screams "This is what happens to a black man in the white house!"

A search shows me no mention of Pres Carter, though, and that's just WRONG! Isn't anybody out there old enough to remember Carter thowing on those sweaters, and trying to show everybody that he was really just a regular, approachable, nice guy?
Now we have the President hanging out, drinking beer in the back yard while working things out with his pals. That tactic worked so well for Carter, I guess Obama thought he's try it, himself. /sarc
