CNN just showed the 'extraordinary' video.

Nothing says 'This a completely sincere attempt at reconciling the two parties and not a cheap attempt at publicity or attention-whoring' like the occasional cameraman swooping in and out of the camera's view accompanied the the staccato rapid-fire clicking of hundreds of camera-shutters simulatneously going off...

At the risk of seriously damaging my Packer fan cred, I just don't like beer. And I can't stand even the sight of a bratwurst.

More for you guys, I guess.

In some of my songs i have casually mentioned
The fact that i like to drink beer
This little song is more to the point
Roll out the barrel and lend me your ears

(Chorus:)
I like beer. it makes me a jolly good fellow
I like beer. it helps me unwind and sometimes it makes me feel mellow (makes him feel mellow)
Whiskey's too rough, champagne costs too much, vodka puts my mouth in gear
This little refrain should help me explain as a matter of fact i like beer
(he likes beer)

My wife often frowns when we're out on the town
And i'm wearing a suit and a tie
She's sipping vermouth and she thinks i'm uncouth
When i yell as the waiter goes by

like beer. it makes me a jolly good fellow
I like beer. it helps me unwind and sometimes it makes me feel mellow (makes him feel mellow)
Whiskey's too rough, champagne costs too much, vodka puts my mouth in gear
This little refrain should help me explain as a matter of fact i like beer
(he likes beer)

Last night i dreamed that i passed from the scene
And i went to a place so sublime
Aw, the water was clear and tasted like beer
Then they turned it all into wine

I like beer. it makes me a jolly good fellow
I like beer. it helps me unwind and sometimes it makes me feel mellow (makes him feel mellow)
Whiskey's too rough, champagne costs too much, and vodka puts my mouth in gear
Aw, this little refrain should help me explain as a matter of fact i love beer
(yes, he likes beer)

There was profiling here, no doubt. Obama just knew the white cop had to be in the wrong. I like what VDH had to say:

Recently, Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates got into a spat with a white policeman who arrested him in his own home for disorderly conduct. Gates immediately cried racism. He argued that his own plight was emblematic of the burdens that the black underclass endures daily from a racist white America.

But Gates is one of the highest-paid humanities professors in the United States. And Gates — not the middle-class Cambridge, Mass., white cop — engaged in shouting and brought up race. Within hours, the African-American mayor of Cambridge, the African-American governor of Massachusetts, and the African-American president of the United States all rallied to their chum’s side.

Yet this well-connected, well-paid Harvard resident apparently wants us to believe that he is living under something like the United States of many decades ago.

Actually - it's happened more than once. Once I was on vacation and arrived at the condo we were booked to stay. I had the keys, but they didn't give me the key to the screen doors. The screen doors were both locked. We called security ourselves so as to avoid an uncomfortable situation.

What makes Gates a jerk is that the woman who called 9/11 and the police were simply doing what they thought was right.

If someone called the police on me - I'd be nice about it -even grateful. Thanks for checking!

Exactly.

If the police showed up at my house after I just got caught breaking in I would thank him/them for coming and protecting my property. (Also my neighbor would recognize me because I'm not the sort of prick who doesn't know his neighbors).

Instead apparently a Harvard professor doesn't have enough common sense to be civil with police showing up to possibly protect him and his family in his home. Instead he thanks the officer by insulting the guys mother and making a national incident out of it with the help of his friend the POTUS.

I'm not as impressed with Joe the Pumber as I was w/ Sgt. Crowley.

Having said that, Joe the Plumber could be the biggest problem-drinking. cross burning, puppy drowning asshole bigot deadbeat dad around, it still wouldn't have changed the fact that 0bama went on record as openly having espoused redistributing America's wealth.

OT - to my fellow California lizards:

California drought over saving Delta smelt

However, his particular scene of devastation, Mr. Allen argues, has nothing to do with the credit crisis, the housing crash or the downturn that has California in a vice grip.

It has to do with a seven-centimetre-long, semi-translucent, steel blue fish known as the Delta smelt.

This is not a story about fish. Rather, it is a story about how efforts to save the fish through a court-ordered water shortage have pushed a region already brought to the brink by recession over the edge.

A court-ordered water shortage. Only in California. Unfreakin' believable.

OT - to my fellow California lizards:

California drought over saving Delta smelt

A court-ordered water shortage. Only in California. Unfreakin' believable.

Chicago columnist Mike Royko once described California as the world's largest outdoor insane asylum, and as a lifelong inmate, I can't dispute that characterization.

we are suffering here in SoCal. Putting us in extreme danger for fall's fire season.

It's all about politics and the environmentalist wackos.

520 Right Brain  Thu, Jul 30, 2009 5:40:01pm

Prof. Gates is flaunting his power, and boy does he have it. Anyone who can get their disorderly charge arbitrated in the Rose Garden by the President, does have the power. Power, thats what it is about.

521 Ratbert  Thu, Jul 30, 2009 5:55:02pm

Beer. Is there anything it can't do?

522 shifty  Thu, Jul 30, 2009 5:56:29pm

If they played ASSHOLE does Obama and Biden always get to be President and VP?

523 Takeshi6400  Thu, Jul 30, 2009 6:03:58pm

The only reason that this little get together would have been interesting to attend is, consider how dumb Biden can be when he's sober. Can you imagine the things he says after a few beers?

524 Orangutan  Thu, Jul 30, 2009 6:07:32pm

I am thrilled to see this next evolutionary step in the Great Dialogue on Race started by President Clinton. It's gone from the open forums rich with public debate to where citizens freely and casually sit around in the backyard with a beer and chat about how their race is a major factor in their everyday behaviors and decision making.

I hope Sgt. Crowley got the "friends and family" discount on the beer. A police officer makes a lot less than those other guys; it'd be wrong if they charged him full retail for it.

526 gulfloafer  Thu, Jul 30, 2009 6:43:06pm

You'd think the president would have more pressing issues to deal with. OK, maybe he was caught off guard and spoke too soon before the facts were in. So what? Admit the error and move on.

We're not paying these jokers to sit around and drink beer on a Thursday. At least hold off until Saturday ... jeez//

re: #417 songbird

Has anyone said "The Audacity of Hops" yet?

LOL - Outstanding!

528 FrogMarch  Thu, Jul 30, 2009 6:57:34pm

Observations:

1. Why's Biden there? (Link to print coverage with photo.) Unfair to Crowley. He's outnumbered 3 to 1, and he's the one in the most unfamiliar situation.

2. It was 86° when this happened — the hottest time of the day — and Crowley and Gates are in dark suits and ties? When it was decided that this would be a picnic-table setting, why didn't they ensure that the invited guests dress for the casual environment? Biden and Obama are in shirt sleeves, which isn't appropriate either, but they are at least cooler. Nothing like making the guests comfortable. This doesn't even give the remote appearance of a bunch of guys having a beer.

etc...

yeah. why?

re: #33 formercorpsman

Is it me, or does Biden in that picture look like he is just ready to split?

(Ok Boss, I've been here for 10 minutes now, can I go?)

LOL. That was my first thought too. Why IS Biden there anyway? I don't recall him saying anything about this affair.

re: #528 FrogMarch

It's all about the photo op. That's why they're outside, and not even in the shade, on a July afternoon in DC. And Gates and Crowley are both smarter to keep their jackets on - if you were them, would you want to risk nationally distributed photos of you with sweat stains?

re: #531 ianmc

Again, I think it's about the photo op. Somebody at the WH probably said, hey, we can't have it look like Obama and Gates are ganging up on Crowley. Biden's white, so let's have him join the group and balance it out. Because to this WH, it's all about race.
Sadly.

Funny, the unelected wear suits, and the leader of the free world and his assistant don't. Professionalism has been defenestrated.

Beer. Is there anything it can't do?

Yeah, it sure can't make this situation better.

536 sngnsgt  Thu, Jul 30, 2009 8:23:21pm

Sooo, how many brewski's did 'Ol Joe have before he broke into, "The Villages?"

537 13punterdog  Thu, Jul 30, 2009 9:34:57pm

Let's see , a racist, dingbat, cop and a talking head err.. teleprompter reader/ community organizer walk into a beer garden. Sounds like the makings of a good joke! What the hell is Biden doing there, as if the meeting weren't dumb enough already.

538 teleskiguy  Fri, Jul 31, 2009 12:07:25am

OK, I'm a little late getting in on this thread, but I want to say something about all this. I think it's kind of neat!

539 Marcus Dracon  Fri, Jul 31, 2009 12:11:48am

Is that a real shot or is it photoshopped?

540 Marcus Dracon  Fri, Jul 31, 2009 12:13:38am

Is there a link to the story?

Laughing. If my wife caught me having beer with my goons 3pm on a Thursday...she's not even as buff as FLOTUS.

re: #38 Beach Lover

why do they have to sit outside anyway? This whole thing makes no sense to me. I would feel slighted. Its Crowley's house as much as Obama's.

This whole thing is a SNL skit waiting to happen. The drinking getting out of control and a brawl breaking out. Then Crowley demands to see Obama's I.D. and arrests him in the White House for disorderly conduct. And then Obama screams "This is what happens to a black man in the white house!"

543 Mikey_Dallas  Fri, Jul 31, 2009 7:20:35am

Saw online that Gates' preferred Red Stripe Jamaican beer suddenly became a Sam Adams, American-made beer. Why do you think that was???

544 kevrobin45  Fri, Jul 31, 2009 8:28:10am

100 bottles of beer on the wall, take one down, pass it around...
99 bottles of beer on the wall...

545 zonk  Fri, Jul 31, 2009 8:34:42am

I think I only would have agreed to this if it was for "beers" and not a beer. It would bhave been much more interesting after they downed 6+ each.

546 JimV  Fri, Jul 31, 2009 8:37:50am

I heard Crowley had a lite beer, Gates had a dark lager, and Barry had a Black and Tan.

Just read about half the comments. Thanks for the laughs, lizards...

548 Optimizer  Fri, Jul 31, 2009 9:14:08am

Haven't read through yet, but look forward to it.

A search shows me no mention of Pres Carter, though, and that's just WRONG! Isn't anybody out there old enough to remember Carter thowing on those sweaters, and trying to show everybody that he was really just a regular, approachable, nice guy?

Now we have the President hanging out, drinking beer in the back yard while working things out with his pals. That tactic worked so well for Carter, I guess Obama thought he's try it, himself. /sarc
