Look On My Works, Ye Mighty, And Despair

Roland Burris, appointed by scandal-beset governor Rod Blagojevich, is turning out to be—not to put too fine a point on it—a nut.

CHICAGO (AP) — Roland Burris has erected a grand mausoleum for himself, carved with the words “TRAIL BLAZER” and a long list of his accomplishments, with a space left for his more recent achievements. That gap could soon be filled in with “U.S. Senator.”

The tomb is a monument to the ambition — some say egotism — that led him to accept what many regard as a tainted prize: an appointment to the Senate from scandal-ridden Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

“Roland wants an office. It’s another thing to chisel on his Ramses II pyramid,” said Judy Baar Topinka, a former Illinois state treasurer and Republican candidate for governor. She added: “His ego is huge.”

Here’s a photo of the “Trail Blazer” plaque on Roland Burris’ monument to himself.

I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: "Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown
And wrinkled lip and sneer of cold command
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed.
And on the pedestal these words appear:
`My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings:
Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!'
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare,
The lone and level sands stretch far away.

That's like the question, "What would we do if Tijuana was rocketing San Diego?"

Unfortunately, with The Exalted One's crowd of advisors, the most likely answers would be;

1. San Diego Has A Navy Base. It's Provocative. They Deserve It.

and/or

2. San Diego Must Have Done Something To Offend Tijuana. They Should Stop Doing It!

Being "progressive" means that everything is always the victim's fault. Because, you know, the attacker is the real victim.

Soon Illinois will become like the "Valley of Kings" in ancient Egypt, with vast monuments and mausoleums dedicated to the Great Ones. Next to the grand Temple of Obama, with its Greek-style columns and throngs of ecstatic acolytes, will be the Mausoleum of The Burris, the largest building in North America. And so the monuments stretch off toward the horizon.

Meanwhile, the only building in disrepair is the Abraham Lincoln Birthplace. Lincoln? Never heard of him.

Talk to Frankfort, KY.

*gag*

One of the basic problems when attempting "negotiation" with people who do not accept your version of reality is that they may not want to negotiate what you want to negotiate. An example of this was the 1982 Falklands War, when Argentina, having seized same by force, insisted that any negotiations must end with the "Malvinas" as Argentine territory in perpetuity.

The alternative, according to the Argentine government, was that Argentina would declare war on the UK, and all British subjects in the "Malvinas" would be POWs.

Margaret Thatcher referred to this as "hostage-taking", and said it would be dealt with accordingly. The Argentines soon found out why, in American football terms, The Mahoning Valley Hitmen (yes, it's a real team- Google "Maurice Clarett") don't take on the Cleveland Browns.

I wonder what would happen if, after January 20, some government or terrorist group would seize a remote part of the U.S. and make similarly irrational demands.

/Actually, I'm not sure I want to think about it- but I will anyway.

Chicago great architects Daniel Burnham and John Root are buried at Graceland as is (in a truly grand Greek-style Temple) millionaire Pottoer Plamer and her wife Bertha (the Palmer House Hotel is named after her, it was his wedding gift to her). Mt. Carmel's famous are somewhat more infamous: Alphonse "Scarface Al" Capone tops the list, buried there along with several of his brothers. Today, over at RCP, I ran across a Chicago Tribune op-ed about Comrade Burris, in which the writer referred to him as "Tombstone" Burris, in tones that indicated to me that it was a common nickname for the guy in Chicago. Having seen his monument to himself (no doubt erected at taxpayers' expense) I now understand why.

That was John Kass, good reporter when he tries, but sometimes he tries too hard to be Royko-esque in his style. He coined the "tombstone" affect himself, for that column. Also Burris paid for the tombstone himself. I'm no defender of Illinois democrats, I'd like to see all of them move away to Massachusetts, or beyond. But Burris isn't nuts. Also, as far as I know, he's no crook. He is simply on the wrong side of a major dust-up in the party. In this case, which is a tough one, he showed more balls than any Republican in this state could ever imagine having. He's getting the tested Palin Treatment from the MSM, and hanging tough. I wish he wasn't a fu**ing democrat, just for that. Reid tries to dictate to the state, and Burris says 'take a hike, I'm following the law, how about you'. Please don't drink the MSM kool-aid on this one. It's a lot more important than it looks.

I noticed that Judicial Watch has filed a brief calling for Burris to be seated, basically on the grounds that as yet, Blagojevich hasn't been convicted of anything or removed from office, so he technically still has the legal authority to appoint Burris.

Technically speaking, the first appointed black senator was Hiram Revels of Mississippi, in 1870, by a majority vote of the State Senate. (That would be considered an appointment today, as it was not an election by plebiscite.)

Burris is so in love with himself he named his children Roland and Rolanda.

No joke.

The guy is ambitious and dim -- a bad combination.

It isn't a surprise that during his testimony before the Blagojevich impeachment committee today Burris couldn't remember the names of the clients of his lobbying firm. He's the name on the door and that's it.

In 2002 he received a $1.2 million loan for his gubenatorial primary run from a firm that had never donated to a politician before (and only one other politician has received a donation from that firm since -- Blago in 2006). The loan was forgiven after Burris dropped out of the race. At the time there was talk that Burris was asked to join the primary to suck votes away from Paul Vallas so that Blago could would win.

Burris has been a tool all along. As you're all learning now that the spotlight is on Illinois politics, the guy is nuts.

Planters has a new mixed nuts variety on the market:

Franken Burris

Truly great, accomplished men are, parodoxically, humble. They let their achievements speak for themselves, and see no need to advertise them. It's the rare bird who can be vain and self-promoting and still claim the mantle of greatness. MacArthur, for example.

In stark contrast to the priorities of Thomas Jefferson, whose self-written tombstone inscription famously lists only three accomplishments:

"author of the Declaration of American Independence, of the Statute of Virginia for Religious Freedom, and father of the University of Virginia"

...without mentioning at all that he'd been the Virginia governor, Washington's Sec. of State, Adams' VP, and of course the third POTUS, who pushed the Louisiana Purchase through, among many other things.

182 happy_days  Thu, Jan 8, 2009 7:42:33pm

Here is the tombstone.
Among his list of acheivements carved into his tombstone: "First African-American in Illinios to become (?) exchange student to University of Hamburg" WTF?

re: #132 MandyManners

Have you ever killed a bar?

Killed him a bar when he was only three.
Davy, Davy Crockett . . .

No. Wait.

Daniel Boone was a man,
Yes, a big man!
With an eye like an eagle
And as tall as a mountain was he!

From the coonskin cap on the top of ol' Dan
To the heel of his rawhide shoe;
The rippinest, roarinest, fightinest man
The frontier ever knew!

Now why wasn't Dan'l's bear killing celebrated in song? I bet he killed as many bears as Davy Crockett.

By the way, let it be noted that Jefferson's statute on religious freedom in Virginia was radical for its era, and controversial in its day, in that it did not show favoritism to Christianity as the majority religion, and in fact makes no direct reference of any kind to Christ, although the Preamble invokes "Almighty God... the holy author of our religion, who being lord both of body and mind, yet chose not to propagate it by coercions on either, as was in his Almighty power to do." What the statute (written in 1779 and finally passed in 1786) says, instead, is:

We the General Assembly of Virginia do enact that no man shall be compelled to frequent or support any religious worship, place, or ministry whatsoever, nor shall be enforced, restrained, molested, or burthened in his body or goods, nor shall otherwise suffer, on account of his religious opinions or belief; but that all men shall be free to profess, and by argument to maintain, their opinions in matters of religion, and that the same shall in no wise diminish, enlarge, or affect their civil capacities.

In contrast, the "religious liberty" laws in various other states, at that time, did not necessarily protect all non-Christians, and certainly didn't protect outright atheists; nor did they nullify blasphemy laws, as Jefferson's statute did in Virginia.

The third section of the statute says, further, that although subsequent generations of Virginia legislators would of course have the power to void the law, the man who wrote it and the men who eventually approved it chose to formally declare:

that the rights hereby asserted are of the natural rights of mankind, and that if any act shall be hereafter passed to repeal the present or to narrow its operation, such act will be an infringement of natural right

(So there!)

I could think of a lot more interesting things from the sixties to put on my gravestone, than being an exchange student to Germany for a part of the year between 1959 and 1960.

And I thought this man was, at least, reasonably competent. All it takes is one lousy gravestone to burst my bubble of godless faith, yet again.

(PS, this isn't an Onion thing, is it?)

Burris is so in love with himself he named his children Roland and Rolanda.

Yep, Jefferson een made his own Bible, removing all mentions of the supernatural and the resurrection. That and some of his quotes would made it hard to win a election today.

Just think of the fun Hannity would have with this quote:

"Question with boldness even the existence of God; because if there be one, he must more approve the homage of reason, than that of blindfolded fear."

or

"It does me no injury for my neighbor to say there are twenty gods or no God. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg."

The contrary-to-fact subjunctive mood is probably appropriate here, since I doubt that Sean Hannity is familiar with the quotes.

(Which is not to say that I'd kick him out of bed for eating crackers. That whole Black Irish thing is teh hawtness. In fact, Hannity plus George Clooney would make for an interesting sammich -- two different flavors of handsome-but-stupid, with me in the middle! Wheee!)

I was just thinking this morning how Burris seemed a little too keen to fill that seat. And who was that moron on Fox this morning saying that if we didn't support Burris we were racist? He tried to backtrack by saying that America is still racist because there are too many whites in the Senate, etc.

I believe Buchanan was trying that tack as well a couple days ago.

I could leave them some suggestions:

Our dear Mother, (1970-20xx). She took the passwords to the computer with her.

Dear Mother, who spent our inheritance on fine chocolate and books.

Dear Mother, who spent our inheritance on fine chocolate and books.

My parents are health nuts who'd disapprove of spending too much money on chocolate (even high-quality chocolate), but otherwise they'd like you.

Instead of chocolate, they invest in heirloom-quality collectible troll figurines that will be worth a fortune someday*.

If you think about it, this makes a certain amount of sense. Obama's most outstanding quality is not his accomplishments, his ability, or even his eloquence--it's his ego.

Only a man who puts his own "accomplishments" on a mausoleum he's built himself has a big enough ego to fill The Lightbringer's shoes in the Senate.

But....he won't be the first African-American senator from Illinois. That honor belongs to.....oh gosh, what's his name? Barry....something.

Actually, the first black Senator from Illinois was Carol Moseley Braun.

I believe the "Trailblazer" monicker is due to the fact that Burris has the distinction of being the first black to be elected to statewide office in Illinois way back when.

Blago knew all along about Burris's character. He knew what he was doing when he made his choice.

225 doubleozaphod  Fri, Jan 9, 2009 9:34:08am

I admit, I didn't read the whole thread, but did anyone else notice that on this guy's monument, the dates are listed in reverse chronological order? So that, if he does get to add "Senator - 2009" to the *bottom* of the list, it will be listed out of order; he should have left room at the top!

226 Terbeau  Fri, Jan 9, 2009 10:49:53am
