Tech Note: New Sharing Tool

Science • Views: 2,344

We’re trying out a new tool that lets you easily share LGF articles at a whole passel of social networking sites; Digg, Yahoo Buzz, Reddit, Propeller, Newsvine, Facebook, MySpace, etc. etc.

The tool is AddThis. I removed ShareThis for testing purposes; we were having occasional connection problems with ShareThis that slowed down the loading of our pages.

So far AddThis seems quicker and less obtrusive, but we’ll give it a couple of days to see how it performs in comparison to ShareThis.

Here’s a tech tip for the geeks dwelling amongst us. The default AddThis code, which is supposed to be embedded following each article, looks like this:

We discovered that you can put the last line (which loads the Javascript popup code from the AddThis servers) in the section of the page just once, and eliminate it from the other instances where you want an AddThis button. On the LGF front page, this saves dozens of unnecessary calls to the AddThis servers.

UPDATE at 1/9/09 1:39:18 pm:

Correction to that last paragraph: you can load the AddThis Javascript file in the section of the page—except if the browser is Microsoft Internet Explorer, which will occasionally crash with a cryptic “Operation Aborted” error message if you do. The solution for IE is to put that last line of code somewhere in the section of the page instead.

If possible, a really useful tool would be one that notifies a poster when something they wrote got a response from another user.

Obama will talk to them because he does not know what else to do. He can't bring himself to label them as the enemy they really are yet (I still hold a small hope that he will learn better), so talking is all he has.

I learned from my time spent in the Republic of the Philippines when I was active duty Navy to appreciate what rain can do. Typhoons and Monsoons can dump a lot of water in a short time, and having to watch a cemetery slide off a hill and splatter onto a road is not fun.

The only other US president to appear is a comic book as far I know was JFK. He appeared twice in Superman, the second time actually impersonating Clark Kent to prevent Kent's secret identity from being discovered.

There's a limit to what teachers can do. I had one particular horror - fourth grade still lives in my memory - of a teacher who actively encouraged the bullying. Most of the time, it was fairly low-level.

I hope Karma has bit her butt.

My LGF is running fine. Is Bell or Rogers your internet provider?

They both suck and deliberately slow down internet speed to piss off their customers.

I hate them both, equally.

WR, my ISP is Xplornet. Rural wireless service. But it only seems to be LGF that is running slow. Reloaded numerous times; restarted Firefox numerous times. Sometimes "new comments" button works as it should, sometimes not. Same for "preview" button.

Good evening fellow honcos! I just finished catching up on the 1000+ comments on the fake CNN video thread. Lots of excellent observations there. I've also just video screen-captured and reviewed the high-resolution version of the Channel 4 video that Charles posted, so can I add a few more thoughts, even though this train has pretty much left the station by now?

1. I agree with the observation, made by several people, that a code on an exsanguinating trauma patient should include massive amounts of fluid, infused by as many big IV lines as possible. But I'm not sure we can say that wasn't happening. There's an IV pole on the patient's left, with two bags hanging on it. The patient appears to have a left antecubital IV. Someone also would have put in a central line, if this were a real code, but there's a tube that could conceivably be a central line heading under the patient's heavy blanket. Hey, wait a second...

2. Blanket? Why the hell is there a heavy blanket on the patient? You don't put a blanket on a patient during a code. And if there's one there, the first thing you do is take it off, particularly if it's a trauma patient. It's staring us right in the face, but, besides the absurdly unrealistic chest compressions and the lack of any ventilation for the patient, this might be the most egregiously faked part of the whole video.

3. There's no defibrillator anywhere near the patient. Nobody would run a code without a defibrillator.

I'll leave it at that. Thanks to everyone for checking out the video carefully, and special thanks to Kilgore Trout for some excellent sleuthing in figuring out that the camera operator ran two websites for Hamas.

As an actor, I know the power of the screen. As an activist, I also know the power of taking a message off the screen and onto the streets. That's why I love CODEPINK--it not only utilizes the best of the visual media with its vibrant pink presence; the women of CODEPINK are also out in the world, whether speaking truth to power, helping Iraqi refugees, or using citizen diplomacy to build bridges with Iran. I support CODEPINK's audacious, compassionate work to create a more just and peaceful world. Won't you?

My Father uses IE6 for some unknown reason. He's called me 3 times this week to talk him out of a virus that keeps opening the same page over and over until the PC freezes. I found superantispyware and that took care of it. I still can't get him to use a different browser though. I tried to get him to at least try IE7 but after he didn't like that, I had to roll it back to IE6 for him. Some are more experienced and set in their ways to get them to try something new.

It might not be such a bad idea for someone who uses a defibrillator to know how to operate it, don't you think?

Most of the modern ones have built in diagnostics that can recognize an irregular or no heart beat. you just put the pds on the person and stand back. We had to take a class at work last month. For an ambulance to get to us at work would take an hour. Not a good thing.

One problem with that is some kids will want to see how tough your kids are and try to pick fights.

Could be, and actually I've heard from a friend who has two kids who are already black belts (TaeKwonDo) in their 'tweens that they've had some trouble with that. But it doesn't really bother the kids, because they know that if it comes down to it, they can kick the bully's ass. They also know to walk away at the right time.

IDF unveils Hamas map seized in Gaza

Paratroopers in northern Gaza have uncovered a map prepared by Hamas that shows how the terror group prepared for the IDF's incursion by deploying different types of bombs as well as snipers throughout the town of Atatra.

The handwritten map is based on a bird's-eye view of the town, likely taken from Google Maps. On the map, Hamas split the town into three sectors - red, blue and green - and highlighted important sites such as mosques, a gas station and a fuel depot.

"On the map, the terrorists also marked sniper positions, as well as the location of roadside bombs, antitank bombs and land mines," Chief Intelligence Officer Brig.-Gen. Yuval Halamish said on Thursday.

Halamish said the map showed how Hamas does not hesitate to use civilian infrastructure for its terrorist activity. A brown dot marked next to a mosque represents a sniper position.

re: #151 Occasional Reader

Out of curiosity; why not?

You want the coding patient to be buck naked, or close thereto, pretty quickly. Mostly because a lot of people cluster around the patient very quickly (unlike in the bogus code in the video), and need unhindered access to different parts of the body. Someone by the head will be bag ventilating, then intubating, then bagging through the tube. Someone by the chest will be doing chest compressions. Someone else near the neck will be checking for a carotid pulse during pauses in the compressions. Someone else will need to put on cardiac monitor electrodes. If a pulse comes back, someone will be checking for a blood pressure. Someone else may be trying to put in a central intravenous line, most often (during a code) a femoral line that goes in through the groin. Someone else may be trying to draw blood from somewhere else. Basically, there's a lot going on (again, unlike in the bogus code in the video), and the last thing anyone wants is sheets, blankets, clothes, etc. in the way. Particularly a big heavy blanket that covers more than half the patient, as in this case.

Also, any serious trauma patient would get all his or her clothes removed immediately upon arriving in the emergency room, whether or not his or her heart ever stopped. ER nurses get extremely good at doing this amazingly quickly, using big scissors that are sometimes called "trauma shears." The idea is that you need to inspect every inch of the patient for signs of traumatic injury that you might have missed. For example, you don't notice the gunshot wound in the back until you roll the patient over. You don't know about the bowel injury until you do the rectal exam.

That is truly bizarre. If there's one thing they drill into you during ACLS training, it's that rapid defibrillation saves lives, and you should have an automatic defibrillator around anyplace where someone might suddenly die (everywhere, basically).

Has Spidey lost his Spidey sense?

WASHINGTON – Spider-Man has a new sidekick: The president-elect.

Barack Obama collected Spider-Man comics as a child, so Marvel Comics wanted to give him a "shout-out back" by featuring him in a bonus story, said Joe Quesada, Marvel's editor-in-chief.

"How great is that? The commander in chief to be is actually a nerd in chief," Quesada said. "It was really, really cool to see that we had a geek in the White House. We're all thrilled with that."

The comic starts with Spider-Man's alter-ego Peter Parker taking photographs at the inauguration, before spotting two identical Obamas.

Parker decides "the future president's gonna need Spider-Man," and springs into action, using basketball to determine the real Obama and punching out the impostor.

Obama thanks him with a fist-bump.

Good evening.

In today's market the Dow was down 0.31%, the S&P 500 was up 0.34% which would suggest that the market was pretty flat today.

A key statistic though, again that the MSM will not tell you, is that of the 3113 issues inthe NYSE today, 1900 (61%) gained on the day. You are starting to see more days of more gainiers than losers.

Some might call that a "dead cat bounce", draw your own conclusions.

Remember that the market tends to turn 3 to 6 months before the economic data reported reflects that, cause such data is always reported a quarter or two later.

Another interesting item is the TED spread is down to 1.28, which is starting to get back to what many would consider "normal" range.

The VIX (volatility index) is at 42 and change, less than half the high point reached in October of 89 and change. The lower this index goes, the less volatile the market is.

In early trading in Asia, the Nikkei is down 0.94% and the Hang Seng is up 0.14%.

But I agree with the sentiment that this opens the door to similar suits and question what is "reasonable". Not shocked this was decided in CA at all.

South Korea cuts interest rate to record low

HONG KONG (MarketWatch) -- The Bank of Korea slashed interest rates by half a percentage point Friday, bringing its key rate to record low 2.5% in an effort to prop up an economy suffering from a collapse in exports.
The rate cut adds to the four other reductions in the past three months, bringing the cumulative easing since October by the central bank to 275 basis points.
The rate cut was widely expected and inline with analysts polled by Dow Jones Newswires.
"The local economy is slowing very rapidly as export growth and domestic demand continues to decline," the central bank said in a statement Friday.
The central bank warned of more slowing in the months ahead as the U.S. and euro zone economies fall further into recession.
The rate cut follows data showing South Korean exports contracted 17.4% in December from a year earlier. Industrial production also was weaker in November, marking it fifth straight month of deceleration.

Remember these times folks, cause you will never see rates this low again in your lifetime after inflation gets ignited.

Low interest rates don't mean diddly if the banks won't lend money. (I know you know that, 3 wood)

Well, there is the indirect impact on the currency, cause when you lower interest rates the currency of that country tends to devalue. That then makes their goods cheaper for others to buy, and the supply of goods gets thinner, and prices will start to get bid up.

Some banks are starting to lend by the way.

Remember these times folks, cause you will never see rates this low again in your lifetime after inflation gets ignited.

For entirely personal reasons, I'm just not looking to buy a house right now (may transfer overseas in the not-too-distant, too lazy to be an absentee landlord). Otherwise, I'd be all over getting a mortgage loan right now.

Bollinger Bands are very narrow and other indicators also show that a break out in one direction or another should be imminent.

Yeah I've seen some stuff on that. I tend to base my analysis not on the technical charts but more my grasp of macroeconomics.

There is a huge amount of cash sitting on the sidelines earning little if any yield. As soon as it looks like a positive risk adjusted yield can be found in the market going forward, you will see the cash torrent back into the market.

One strategy being kicked around, and I'm not suggesting anybody do this mind you, just mentioning it, is to take out a personal line of credit if you can get a low fixed rate, wait for inflation to take off, then borrow the money at the fixed lower rate and invest it at the increasing higher rate in the future.

It's a potential for legal arbitrage.

Actually, I got two disturbing e-mails. One is that the Jewish community of Venezuela is seriously preparing for pogrom-like violence...apparently there is major incitement and the local Jews are terrified.

Two-Montreal police had to be summoned to the Israeli consulate to force out demonstrators-I cannot believe there has been a second breach of security at an Israeli consulate in Canada in as many days.

There was a similar occurrence in Boston.

Boston Police arrested several people today when protesters opposed to Israel’s military incursion into the Gaza Strip rushed the lobby at the Park Plaza Building, which houses the Israeli Consulate.

Yes I do. Hasbara is Hebrew for explanation (or propaganda), lehasbir in Hebrew is to explain. It's also used for 'information' or PR. The man has not taken office yet and is being criticized.

Well, it's all in the details. Either the criticism is valid or not. I do not know of a case where a public figure could validly get a pass on criticism simply because they haven't taken office yet. Those who lost the election are criticized. Why would Obama be exempt?

After some thought about the faked hospital footage I've come to the conclusion that Ch4 and CNN are despicable and lazy for airing Hamas propaganda I've come to despise the doctor, Mads Gilbert, even beyond the the Hamas supporting asshole who shot the footage to exploit his own brother's death. Gilbert took his valuable time away from dying and seriously injured women and children to fake a resuscitation effort. Of all the creeps involved in this story Gilbert is by far the most depraved.

First post of the day.

I am a doctor, too, and I am so glad this whoile video expose has taken place. I was working today (and cannot access LGF from there) and when I saw the video I was stunned. If that was one of our guys, he'd be fired the same day.

Looking at his build, his hair, his faked "look of disgust" I guessed he must be the Norweigan doc MG. There are so many irregularities about that scene it is creepy it is strange it even made it to the editors to ignore.

I have no video editing skills, but I would be happy to sit down with someone who does and go through it, although it has probably already been done by many of us already.

Unreal. Straighten your collar, Mads.

Yes, I see that. It will always haunt me and blow my mind that he enters the Presidency with on-the-job-training. As far as I'm concerned, he hasn't even been potty trained for the ofiice.

For me it isn't so much the lack of training; no person elected has the experience before they assume the office; it is His sheer arrogance that He KNOWS everything already.

re: #544 MandyManners

How's the mouse in your house?

I'm glad you asked, 'cuz y'all won't frickin believe this one...

I did a reorg on the furniture over the weekend - because I need change in the dead of winter. As part of it, I moved my love seat in front of my radiator (one of those old, cast-iron ones), to give a "tunnel" for my nemesis. He actually came out in broad daylight several times, so I marked his paths and placed traps in those locations.

Monday night when I got home, I immediately checked the traps, and noticed one was missing. I got down on the floor with the flashlight shining under the love seat - nothing. Then I found it under the radiator - but no mouse. I should note that I had placed that trap a full six inches away from it's current location - between the back of the love seat and the radiator.

I reached under the radiator to retrieve the trap, only to notice that it seemed stuck on something. I inspected further, and discovered that the trap had actually been sprung, but the "kill-bar" had caught on the bottom of the radiator, holding the trap in place. Had I pulled this trap from it's business end, thinking it had already been sprung, that trap would have certainly snapped on my fingers. Somehow, this trap had been moved under the radiator, and tripped. I am not kidding or exaggerating this story in the least.

Folks, I am dealing with no ordinary mouse.

This weekend, I'm buying a high-powered pellet gun and a ghillie suit. Until then, I'm sleeping in my Jeep - in the garage. It's f'ing cold out here and there's no cable.

Killian, if your cat is up to it, he can have the kill and I'll bounty you $50 and a case of your favorite beer.

Your cat might want to bring nunchuks.

... and a flip-knife.

This is no ordinary mouse.

It had a bearded terrorist in robes holding an ak at his hip, kneeling behind a woman in a burqa pushing a stroller in front of her with baby inside. He was faced off by a Soldier with IDF insignia holding a m16 to his shoulder, standing in front of a woman in modern dress cradling her baby in her arms with her back turned to the conflict to shelter the baby.

So much said in one simple image...any help in finding it once more would be greatly appreciated. Google has been no help at all ;)

Had the same thing when I lived in NYC - mofo would come out into the living room at night while me and the most recent former Mrs. realwest and I were watching TV and just stare at us from maybe 15 feet away! First night he scurried away while I was reaching for something to throw at him.
Second night I was ready - mofo shows up, I throw knife, he's gone like a bat outta hell and we then had a knife sticking outta the wall right where his head was. The former Mrs. realwest was not amused.
The next day I borrowed a friends CO2 powered pellet gun and............he didn't show up. Or the next night. So I put pellet gun away and..........yup, he came back out, sat there staring at us and I could SWEAR I heard a little mouse chorttle before he scampered off again.
Finally got him with a combination of pellets and glue trap.
Screw it Noam, if you don't live in an apartment building, get a shotgun and blow his smart ass away!

Mandy, don't make the same mistake I did. We had a mouse, a persistent bugger, and finally resorted to putting out poison blocks. Well, the poison got nibbled and we didn't see the mouse anymore. A few weeks later, I decided to move the fridge to clean out all of the dust. There was a ton of dust covering various crap, like cheerios, etc. I was scraping it all off when I encountered a large chunk of "dust". Underneath was a dead, crunchy, mouse that I had unknowingly scraped off the floor with my bare hands. It took me awhile to recover.

re: #651 tackle

Mandy, don't make the same mistake I did. We had a mouse, a persistent bugger, and finally resorted to putting out poison blocks. Well, the poison got nibbled and we didn't see the mouse anymore. A few weeks later, I decided to move the fridge to clean out all of the dust. There was a ton of dust covering various crap, like cheerios, etc. I was scraping it all off when I encountered a large chunk of "dust". Underneath was a dead, crunchy, mouse that I had unknowingly scraped off the floor with my bare hands. It took me awhile to recover.

Yummers! ;)

re: #646 realwest

HEY NOAM! Whoa that's some cunninng mouse you got there.

LOL! This has to be a cousin. I've almost considered bird-shot rounds for my 9mm. This mouse is cagey. I'm even keeping an escrima stick handy - but... he seems to know.

In your defense, the former Mrs. Realwest should have been quite impressed.

My parent's cats are indoor cats but one of them, though not the other, would still kill any mouse. Her predecessor showed her willingness to hunt on two occasions; The first time killing a small rat and leaving it for us to find (I was only a child back then) and the other having to be shut up in a room because a bat had gotten into the house. Once I had caught the bat in a box, we let the cat out, but she still had to be held to keep her from going after the box until I had removed it from the house (I set the bat free a few blocks away).

No, that was last Sat. Just got off "hell" week, which is a week of final dress rehearsals with all the tech stuff thrown in. Sometime long days, late nights.

We open tomorrow (Friday) or new show. The regional premiere of "Shining City" by Irish playwright Conor McPherson.

"Set in Dublin, “Shining City” takes place in the disheveled office of Ian, a former priest turned therapist. Ian is visited by John, a middle aged man who has recently lost his wife in a tragic accident. John is having trouble sleeping and is desperate for help, but Ian has his own troubles, including a new baby and a crumbling relationship. John soon reveals the source of his insomnia: he’s been visited by the ghost of his dead wife and is now terrified to return home. In this contemporary ghost story, Conor McPherson explores what it means to lose faith in God and in one’s self."

It was supposed to hit and slide straight. It was a gelled fuel test to limit post crash fires. Everyone saw the huge fireball and wrote it all off. But the test results showed the fuel in the remaining in the tanks didn't burn off like a normal crash, but the visuals were so spectacular the project got canceled.

Mountains are fine. Getting a ton of snow. Not so much down here in the foothills this year (yet). Had a few inches last week. Up to 60 degrees today, going back down to the 20-30's tomorrow, with chance of snow showers.

But up the hill, more snow than they know what to do with. You'll be fine.

Hypothetical scenario: In order to more easily deliver there wares, China should send military vessels to East Africa under the guise of patrolling for Somali pirates. Drop off shipment in Sudanese port. Sudanese fishing boats and "emmigration" runs to move the weapons to Yemen, onward to Gaza.

I think that the difference is that Obama gives great speech. Carter, not so much.

Obama can get the left-base to focus on him, allowing him to mount pressure on the Hill Democrats from the bottom up in a way that Carter was never capable of doing.

I don't know if this piece in the NY times has been mentioned.

It talks about a Palestinian surgeon who's wife was killed and daughter injured:

He said Hamas militants next to his apartment building had fired mortar and rocket rounds. Israel fired back with force, and his apartment was hit. His wife, Albina, originally from Ukraine, and his 1-year-old son were killed./blockquote>

It ends talking about a militant who is upset that he was wounded and not lucky enough to be a martyr, and has to wait in line to be stitched up before he can go try to kill and martyr himself.

Hamas: Abbas no longer heads PA

The IDF's anti-Hamas operation in the Gaza Strip has diverted attention from the row over Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas's term in office, which expires on Friday.

Abbas was elected in January 2005 to a four-year term.

Hamas officials said that as of Friday they would not recognize Abbas's status as president of the PA.

But they also made it clear that they would not demand his resignation for now "because of the war" in the Gaza Strip.

re: #823 itellu3times

Yeah, so, what's the point, is the surgeon looking for vengeance against Hamas?

Point is that even in the NY times it says the surgeons house was blown up, not because they targeted houses of surgeons, but because the shell that knocked out the mortar position spilled over into the wall of an adjoining building.

Also it points to the mindset that this other guy has, of being sorry that he only managed to get himself wounded and not killed in the fighting.
