Britain Has Neocons? Who Knew? - Update: ‘It Is Vital to Have Nothing to Do with Parties Like the Vlaams Belang’

Opinion • Views: 2,385

Here’s a fascinating interview with top British Neoconservative commentator Douglas Murray.

Edward - You mention in your book that a room full of Neoconservatives would be as likely to argue amongst each other as agree, except for a few basic but important points. What are these fundamental beliefs of “Neoconservatism”?

Douglas Murray - Broadly, neoconservatives would agree on the fact that liberal, democratic values constitute the most desirable end-point of human political striving - that accountability of the government to the people is not a luxury but something to be fought for. Much of this we would share with contemporary liberals. What differentiates the neocon from the modern-day liberal is the unanimously-held neoconservative belief that force can be used for the good, and that force should be used, where appropriate, to stand up for liberal-democratic values. Many conservatives agree with the occasional necessity of the use of force, but don’t agree with neoconservatives on using force to carry out regime-change or intervene in situations where a government is abusing its people. So neoconservatives stand at a curious place in the middle of the political debate – not to the far-sides of it as is often alleged, but rather in the middle, making common cause with lots of people for often differing reasons. The term ‘muscular-liberals’ has a slightly embarrassing and self-aggrandizing quality, but it might sum up the tendency best if we agree on using the term ‘liberal’ in the classical sense.

UPDATE at 2/1/09 7:31:43 pm:

LGF reader “HelloDare” contacted Douglas Murray in 2007 about the European neofascists so beloved of our former friends at Jihad Watch and other “anti-jihad” blogs, and received this reply:

From: douglas.murray@[deleted]
Date: Mon, 26 Nov 2007 10:31:37 +0000
To: HelloDare
Subject: Re: The danger of white supremacists being involved in the anti-jihadi movement.

I absolutely agree. And thank you for this. It is vital to have nothing to do with parties like the Vlaams Belang, the Swedish Democrats and their ilk. To his great credit, Fortuyn understood this, and distanced himself at all opportunities. But we have to keep people alert about it. Recently such groups have been been posing as great friends of Israel. This has fooled a number of people, not least some of those who attended the Brussels conference.

Many thanks for being in touch.

Best -
Douglas

I'm sure that they'll soon be just as vilified in the media as the neos here, if not worse, given the nature of the BBC.

I heard Murray speak in Malibu at the Decline of Europe? conference last year. He was great. He was on a panel with Mark Steyn. It's on YouTube in two parts, I believe.

NO NO NO. Neocon has "neo" in it like neonazi, so it must mean that they're more conservative than conservatives.

Seriously though, I usually prefer conservatives to neo-conservatives, and prefer both to "paleo-conservative" (Coughlinites/Pat Buchanan).

What differentiates the neocon from the modern-day liberal is the unanimously-held neoconservative belief that force can be used for the good, and that force should be used, where appropriate, to stand up for liberal-democratic values.

So, conversely, liberals think that force is never justified? Even to defend their civilization. They take the chompsky view then?

I don't think that's liberalism- sounds more like nihilism.

38 lifeofthemind  Sun, Feb 1, 2009 6:52:28pm

Difference between English and American Neo-Conservatism is that the baseline for Conservative is much farther to the left in the UK. American NeoCons often had roots on the left that they rejected but now generally share the American Conservative distrust of government power for intervening in cases that do not call for military force or use of the Police Power. Those being the two forms of government action that most Europeans, Conservative or Socialist, are most suspicious of. So while the European NeoCons may be more pro-American because of their affinity for muscular international action, that does not mean that their domestic policies are close to those favored by American conservatives. The Tory party policies generally resemble the Democratic party consensus in America of 30 years ago and the Labour party stands for something much farther to the left that is closer to what we fear Obama intends.

Last I heard the nazis were saying they supported Obama becoming president because seeing a black man as president would enrage the people and bring them to see the nazi point of view. Somehow I don't think Obama's skin color is what we'll primarily remember him for.

Meanwhile, his secretary of state Hillary Clinton warned that the Israeli-Syrian track of the Middle East peace negotiations took a back seat to the Israeli-Palestinian track, especially because of the recent war in Gaza.

What on Earth does this mean?

I was wondering where Hillary was hiding, just waiting for her to start issuing the kind of gibberish I expect will be all we ever get out of her. Off to a good start!

Indeed. The point I was trying to make, perhaps poorly, is that those that are called neo-cons have done a piss-poor job of defining themselves to prove clowns like Murray wrong.

Conservatives in general don't do a good job of defining their values whereas the commie rat bastards (Daily Kos comes to mind) have done an outstanding job presenting themselves as progressives.

Nothing is illegal unless someone with standing that the court will recognize can challenge it. Which means that under their theory the only check on their actions after the election (since nothing would happen in the short time between the election and inauguration) is the impeachment process. Given the state of Congress that means there is no check on their conduct has not been for many months. Nixon in his wildest dreams didn't have such power and contempt for the Constitution.

He has appeared the BBC, on political programs such as Question Time, The Daily Politics, and Hard Talk.

His comments about Islamic extremism in Holland mean that he has to have a police guard when travelling there.

Right-wing author is banned from Islam talk

A right-wing writer has been banned from chairing a debate on Islam at the London School of Economics today amid security fears, the Standard has learned.

Douglas Murray, a self-confessed “neo conservative”, was due to chair “Islam or Liberalism: Which is the Way Forward?” at the university tonight — 24 hours after the end of a week-long sit in at LSE in protest at Israel's attacks on Gaza.

It says:

In general, the Act is intended to prohibit American citizens without authority from interfering in relations between the United States and foreign governments. Although attempts have been made to repeal the Act, it remains law and at least a potential sanction to be used against anyone who without authority interferes in the foreign relations of the United States.

I'm guessing that the O would make a case that when he had these talks, it was as a private citizen with no intent to interfere with the current administration.

Of course, as the incoming President, any talks at all would have some effect. But I guess they would have to show what effect there was.

It doesn't seem proper or right for him to have had these "talks". But I think any prosecution under the Logan Act would amount to naught. I'm no lawyer, but I just don't see a case of actual "harm" having been done.

Douglas Murray says that he stopped being an Anglican after analysing Muslim texts and deciding that no book — of any religion — could claim infallibility

Just over a year ago I told a lie. In print. In this magazine. I was one of those asked by The Spectator last Christmas whether I believed in the virgin birth. Since it had always seemed to me that if you believed in God a ‘pick and mix’ approach to the central tenets of the faith was pointless, I said ‘yes’. But in fact I felt ‘no’. It wasn’t that I had been wrestling over the doctrine of the incarnation, I simply felt that if I didn’t believe in the virgin birth, I would not believe in God. The truth is I didn’t and don’t. The guilt has been lingering since. This is my atheist mea culpa.

Many people hold on to belief as an unquestioned part of their make-up. They never have to confront the source of their belief, and as long as nothing actively pushes them into addressing it, they keep it as something which rarely does much harm and might actually do some good. I have been an Anglican since birth — and not just a cultural Anglican but at times (rarest of things) a real, worshipping, believing Anglican. Like a lot of believers, I knew that there were parts of my belief that wouldn’t stand up to analysis. But that was fine. I didn’t need to analyse them. I only lost faith when I was forced to...

But there it all is.

Mearshimer-Walt, the New Statesman covers, Independent-newspaper cartoons daily opinion-filth from the Guardian et al. And before you know it, there we are again with perfectly open explanations – in its 60th birthday year – for why the Jewish state won’t long be with us. It’s sickening, but we should call people out on it every time. Relentlessly. And pardon me if I question peoples motives by noticing that of all the injustices in the world somebody decides to single out only those actions which they believe are attributable to the one Jewish state. I know what such double-standards demonstrate. It is not equality: it is prejudice and racism."

From the interview:

Douglas Murray - Well it’s not easy to say. I find it much easier to analyze other peoples’ journeys than I do my own. I’ve never been a party-political man if that’s a key. I’m not tribal as it were. I’d say that I’m both a liberal and a conservative. I’d certainly identify as being on the liberal side of the spectrum in the American culture-wars (ie. pro-abortion, pro-gay-rights etc). But I’m also conservative in small ‘c’ ways. I’m in favour of a very small state, am a low-tax type etc. I suppose the key is that I want government to do very few things, and what I want it to do least is to believe that it can make many choices for me better than I could have made them for myself. However, those things that only the state can do (police, raise armies etc) I think it should be good at.

That certainly leaves the impression he's not cut from fascist cloth.

Promises to close Gitmo without knowing what to do with anyone.
Promises to add a trillion dollars of deficit spending to fund greasy pork.
Can’t get one Republican in the House to go along with the porkulus bill.
Goes on Arab TV to bad mouth the USA.
Is being laughed at and taunted by leaders in Iran.
Pakistan orders him to stop using missiles against their territory.

Closest I can come to is Murray writes for (or use to write for) Standpoint magazine which had an article penned by Michael Nazir-Ali, the Bishop of Rochester, and the National Secular Society accused the bishop of doing BNP's work.

"Standpoint ignited nationwide controversy with its launch edition, in which Michael Nazir-Ali, the Bishop of Rochester, called for the Church to regain a prominent position in public life and blamed the "newfangled and insecurely founded doctrine of multiculturalism" for entrenching the segregation of communities. Nazir-Ali claimed that the decline of Christianity and the rise of liberal values in the UK during the 1960s had created a moral vacuum which radical Islam threatened to fill. "We have argued that it is necessary to understand where we have come from, to guide us to where we are going, and to bring us back when we wander too far from the path of national destiny", the bishop wrote. [5] The Guardian newspaper devoted its leader to criticizing the bishop, although it described his writing as "neatly underlining [Standpoint]’s expressed intent ‘to defend and celebrate Western civilisation’".[6] Nazir-Ali was condemned by the Ramadhan foundation and the President of the National Secular Society, who accused him of "doing the BNP’s work", but was praised by the Daily Telegraph newspaper [7] [8]"

But this has nothing directly to do with Murray, only someones opinion that Standpoint is a really conservative magazine.

Murray neatly sums up the Republican party's new challenges, even though he's speaking more broadly:

For left and right, neoconservatism has laid down the case which needs answering. Ideologically it has few competitors and there is no school that unifies people from such a wide range of the political spectrum. That said, we might have to avoid flaunting the term around for a while. There’s no doubt that the willful misrepresentations and misunderstanding of what neoconservatism is, as well as the desire to pin the strategic mistakes made in Iraq on the neocons have combined to blacken the term. But it doesn’t really matter what we call it. There’s never much point in arguing over nomenclature. What matters is that the case for democracy and universal rights as well as the refutation of the lies and misunderstandings of our enemies – at home and broad – continues. Most people who engage in this will not call themselves neoconservatives. Many of them will not realize that is what they are. That is fine. What matters is that the case is made – unashamedly, unapologetically and by as many people as possible.

Israel’s nuclear hawk Avigdor Lieberman in poll surge

AN ultra-rightwinger, who is said to favour flattening Tehran if Iran develops nuclear weapons, has emerged as the politician gaining the most ground in next week’s general election in Israel.

Avigdor Lieberman, 50, is advancing so rapidly in the polls that his Yisrael Beiteinu (Israel Our Home) party is set to overtake Labour and become the third largest party in the Knesset, Israel’s parliament.

In a recent interview Lieberman said: “I definitely see myself as ready for the post of defence minister.” Although it is unlikely he would be granted access to Israel’s nuclear arsenal, he could be in line for a senior post in a coalition government led by Binyamin Netanyahu, head of the centre-right Likud party and frontrunner in the polls.

One thing that European liberals get to have that our liberals don't is the economic tailwind created by having a patron state that provides your defenses and creates enough industrial innovation that there are new products entering your markets even though you have done none of the investments and trade liberalization needed to develop them yourselves.

Europe has had the US to give them that tailwind.

The US has no one. China won't be protecting us and don't come up with industrial innovation - they too exploit ours.

We have Obama going out and launching into his punitive rhetoric regarding US businesses, and borrowing so much money for "stimulus" that private industry will have a hard time competing.

Our liberals are killing the golden goose so they can divide its meat up fairly.

It will cost them dearly.

It will cost the European liberals too.

I support Israel and have an uncle converted to Judaism I've supported against zealous Christian members of my family. Doesn't seem to fit the mold there, does it?

Good on you.

What's good with Scientology is that they tend to have written down their less favourable ideas somewhere, perhaps by Hubbard himself, so you can dig out some policy letter which supports the claims - and they openly display their Holocaust and 9/11 revisionism. Thankfully they're not denying it outright, but I think it's important to oppose all revisionism which is not based on facts, whether it's outright denial, reduction, or misdirection about the caues.

There are more dangrous proponents out there, like Pat Buchanan and islamist radicals, so all the time shouldn't be spent on Scientology, of course.

I've been reading a book on how the Nazis seized power in Germany. Among other things they took advantage of a vituperative political climate (which they helped create) and then presented themselves as an alternative to "nasty politics".

So if we want to keep thugs of any sort out of power, it is important to stay civil, civil, civil. And to keep away from outfits like Vlaams Belang.

Great game! I lived in the Pittsburgh area during the 70's, Mike Webster (great guy, RIP) lived down the street from us. He used to let the us play football in his back yard and he would sit out on his balcony, drinking beer, and watch us play. Jack Lambert was over at his house once when we were playing, he came down and asked us, very seriously, if he could play too. Then he laughed and spent the rest of our game acting as our referee, using his empty beer cans as penalty flags.

Mike drove a Datsun 240Z (I don't know how he fit in the thing) and every time he'd drive down the road he'd stick one of those massive arms out the window and give us a wave. I was so saddened to hear how he ended up.

No matter where I live the Steelers will always have a special place in my heart.

And, of the biggest auto makers, they had the strongest sales numbers, holding approx. 34% of the market.

So I stand corrected.

Nah, they just get seriously shit-faced. I'm up near the lake, and there's not much else to do on a weekend, let alone a Pittsburg Super Bowl celebration! There's going to be a lot of people calling in to work hungover tomorrow morning! I've never been in Pitt for a celebration like there's going to be, but I don't think they're going to get that rowdy. You never know tho, this is PA in the winter, there aren't many things to celebrate during the winters here.

Folks, let's not forget CLOWARD-PIVEN.

*Strategy for forcing political change through orchestrated crisis

First proposed in 1966 and named after Columbia University sociologists Richard Andrew Cloward and Frances Fox Piven, the “Cloward-Piven Strategy” seeks to hasten the fall of capitalism by overloading the government bureaucracy with a flood of impossible demands, thus pushing society into crisis and economic collapse.

Inspired by the August 1965 riots in the black district of Watts in Los Angeles (which erupted after police had used batons to subdue a black man suspected of drunk driving), Cloward and Piven published an article titled "The Weight of the Poor: A Strategy to End Poverty" in the May 2, 1966 issue of The Nation. Following its publication, The Nation sold an unprecedented 30,000 reprints. Activists were abuzz over the so-called "crisis strategy" or "Cloward-Piven Strategy," as it came to be called. Many were eager to put it into effect.

Much as it disturbs me part of the problem is that they use democracy and universal rights against democracy and universal rights.

Fascism has been called totalitarian democracy, or populist antidemocracy. Regardless of which term you prefer Fascism derives its legitimacy and power from its alleged benevolence towards the populations that it governs. Like the self-proclaimed Communist governments of the 20th century, Fascist governments are extensions of 'The People's' will.

The language of Fascism, and Communism is the language of Democracy, all of which sprang from common roots. It shouldn't be surprising that Communists and Fascists swim freely in the waters of Liberal Democracy.

re: #404 esch

I have to reply in a similar fashion, good for you.

The problem I have is there is SO MUCH crap floating around out there about everyone. The particular faith or sect doesn't matter. Everyone is fair game for people who make a living off of spreading hate. The Jews have suffered the brunt of it historically. But any relatively small group is a target for them.

Funny you should say "fair game", since they have a "Fair game" policy (name now revoked due to PR reasons).

The thing with Scientology is that they have been somwhat successful in gaining influence with people like Bill Clinton, completely control their members (see auditing), and have policies calling for the eradication of certain types of people.

Judaism does have some weird aspects to it, as do all religions, but it's not a mind control cult.

I do agree with your caution though. It could easily turn into making fun of minorities just because they're small and weird, so we have to watch out against that and only concentrate on the dangerous ones.

If you're looking at Europe, I think they need a reform of both their immigration and welfare policies. Fewer immigrants, and fewer state benefits for all.

Yes, I believe you are correct on that. The UK citizens that I've talked to don't understand what the government is doing - immigration continues as un-employment rises and services deteriorate. And then the services are twisted so as to accommodate the immigrants at the expense of the citizens (no assimilation requirements).

Are the immigration quotas set by the EU? A bureaucracy essentially answerable to no one?

I also see too much of this happening here (in the US). The Melting Pot which has been painful at times but successful is being subverted.

Too much emphasis on (blank) American as opposed to American (of blank decent).

Charles -

Was busy, wish I had jumped on this thread earlier. Let me throw out my favorite two "NON-HEBREW" Neo-Cons - who were Neo-Cons before the term was coined.

1. Sen. Henry "SCOOP" Jackson (D) Washington, who like Sen. Gregg of NH, was offered a Cabinet Post (Sec. Def.) by former President Nixon, a Pesident of the Opposition Party. As with Gregg, the deal was to have an opposition Governor appoint a Senator of the same Party as the Elected Senator. When the deal got shaky, Jackson didn't take the post. A great "Norwegian-American."
2. Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan, for all of his faults, including to some, serving in the Nixon Administration, a fellow who got the "Big Picture" right, nearly without exception. A great "Irish-American."

These fellows were the cornerstones of the "Neo-Con" movement. I am proud to be one of their number.

I would need 3 Prizm's to haul my sons teammates and all their soccer shit on weekends to their games. It would end up costing me MORE in gas (as well as wear and tear) than my Explorer and now my Tahoe

Well, now I'm getting confused.

Lieberman May Lead Party to Opposition

While the Yisrael Beiteinu (Israel Our Home) party, headed by Avigdor Lieberman, continues to do better in the polls than Labor, it may be headed for the opposition – while the new government may well include half of Kadima.

These are just two of the surprises that Israel may be in for following the elections to be held only nine days from now.

Recent polls suggest that Yisrael Beiteinu – which has the image of a right-wing party but whose platform indicates otherwise – will soon replace the historic Labor Party as one of Israel’s three largest parties.
Positions espoused by Lieberman that are not quite in nationalist camp consensus include: Easing of marriage laws in opposition to Chief Rabbinate guidelines, easing of conversion-to-Judaism guidelines, giving away Arab-populated areas in the Galilee in exchange for Jewish blocs in Judea/Samaria, and the like.

Given the likelihood that the Likud will win the upcoming elections and form Israel’s next government, it has long been a given that Yisrael Beiteinu will be a senior party in the coalition. The parties’ leaders, Binyamin Netanyahu and Lieberman, have been close political partners for much of the last 15-year period.

Lieberman May Lead Party Out
Despite these givens, howe~er, it appears that Lieberman’s party may well be headed for the opposition. This, the Yisrael HaYom (Israel Today) daily reports, is largely because of personal considerations: Old criminal charges against Lieberman have been raised by the police once again, and it is likely that he will be disqualified from receiving one of the senior Cabinet portfolios he would like – namely, Finance, Justice, or Public Security.

I was at the library today, and they had posters all over the lobby featuring a "History Timeline."

At the top of each poster was a picture of Viola Liuzzo lauding her "exemplary" life. Like, WTF, she was a white woman who was killed in a drive-by in the South the 1960's, by white people. Does a random kid killed in Detroit in a drive-by get a poster in the library for an "exemplary" life.

Oh and, on this "History Timeline" it was 1966 as the "Year of the Detroit riots." Yeah, that's why they're called the "'67 riots."

I'm so freaking pissed off that these professional-looking posters are on display in the public library, paid for by my tax money and get historical facts wrong.

Your car has a DELCO RADIO - actually better than the radio provided by Toyota. To the downside, your trunk key could NOT lock off your trunk release as it could on a "Toyota/Toyota." A great car nontheless, and prettier than the "Toyota/Toyota" of the same model year.

Got into an argument with one about their religion, which then caused them to be censured for getting all negative with the angries or something. I then directed them towards some info on Scientology on the web, which also got them in trouble for viewing non-approved information.

re: #574 EmmmieG

I read the article and I observed the following:

Anonymous Hamburg has just posted an astonishing interview with a German Scientologist in which he speaks of Jews as having “total control of the planet”

Just for the record, I am very disappointed that for my part in the Zionist Honco conspiracy, I have not yet been sent my 3 cubic meters of finest chocolates, along with some Jelly Bellies for the unicorn that arrived last week.

C'mon, you have total control of the planet. What's taking so long?

/sarc, but I still want the chocolate

They pay us lizards by Direct Deposit; didn't you get the memo? Make sure you fill out the form so they can start sending your Zionist payoffs. Also, do remember that the unicorn will also eat Gummi Bears if needed.

My wife worked for a company that became overrrun by Scientologists. She and a coworker discovered some evidence that the president of the company was being blackmailed by personal info he had admitted in auditing sessions; they were ultimately fired for being 'suppressive persons.'

Hubbard has a "management" division, I believe it's called "Bridge Technology." It pushes his business management techniques. You have to be careful. Three years ago, I applied for a programming job here in Denver, a job right up my line. The sent me an email with disclosure information, mentioning Hubbard Management techniques and the fact that I would have to agree to follow these rules.

I recognized it right away.

Scientology has a number of "front" companies that are designed to feed you little chunks of scientology, a way to introduce you to the "church."

Your link has all that info.

He is a child of immigrants from Russia. Such immigrants make up much of his party and constituency. They favor a strong defense and requiring all Israeli citizens to swear allegiance to the state (something intended to dis-enfranchise intransigent Israeli Arabs). It must also be said that they have an authoritarian streak about them, at least to my mind. However, my analysis may be colored by my suspicion of all things Russian.

Natan Sharansky tried to form a party for Russian immigrants called "Yisrael B'Aliyah." He was not successful, and eventually retired from politics. It is really a shame, because he would have made an excellent PM and would not take crap from anyone.

Obama: "Let Them Eat Steak"

Is Barack Obama an insensitive lout who serves $100 per pound steaks to his elite guests and turns up the heat in the White House high enough to grow orchids while a million of his countrymen are without power and dozens are freezing to death? If not, why not?

Solely because that is not the story the media want to tell. Many on the web--but no one in the mainstream media--have commented on the fact that Obama has not even pretended to do anything about the massive ice storm that has disabled much of Kentucky and neighboring states. It took days for FEMA to swing into action. Why is that not a scandal? Days went by before Kentucky's governor called out the National Guard. Why did no one blame Obama for failing to call out the Guard sooner? Probably because he lacks the constitutional power to do so; but the Constitution hasn't changed since 2005.

The Anchoress has an excellent roundup. Glenn Reynolds has been on the story too. One of Glenn's readers writes:

What Katrina taught the media was that they could hurt Bush by lying. What 2008 taught them was that they could help Obama by not reporting at all. What will 2009 teach them? I shudder to think.

A basic reality of our time is that our mass media are monolithic, and what they choose to report (or not report) depends on what fits the narrative they are pushing on the public. If our reporters and editors wanted to portray Obama as clueless and out of touch with ordinary Americans, he has given them ample opportunity to do so. But because they are Democrats and he is a Democrat, they have no desire to tell that story. So "let them eat steak" is not a theme you'll be seeing on the evening news.

They're bringing out a Darwin vs. Freud Godwining match.:

...the incident points up the conspiracy-theory paranoia of Scientology’s Weltanschauung and its susceptibility to anti-Semitism.

Hubbard considered Judaism along with other religions to be false alien implants in human consciousness and aberrations to be removed from human beings by Scientology’s process of counseling called auditing.

In contradiction to its humanistic public assertions that one can be a Jew and a Scientologist at the same time, the reality hidden from the public is that Jewish religious beliefs and practices have to be abjured in order to advance up Scientology’s Bridge To Total Freedom.

Scientology makes no secret of its plans to destroy psychiatry and replace it everywhere in the world with Scientology in its efforts to Clear the Planet. Psychiatry, of course, is irrevocably associated with the name of Sigmund Freud, the best known Jew in the world after Jesus, Alfred Einstein, and Karl Marx.

Scientology pins the blame for the Holocaust on psychiatry. The reasoning is that psychiatry early on condoned eugenics, and that German psychiatrists instituted programs to first destroy the disabled and then the Jews...

Hubbard blames a hell of a lot on psychiatry. Like I said above, he was nut, the Navy saw that, he didn't like that, and after he was out, he went back to hack writing scifi stories. He mentioned once to a friend that the best way to make a fortune was to start a religion, and he did. A lot of his "religion" is based on his early fiction writing.

Something tragic is going to happen soon, I fear, something of such immense proportions that the MSM will NOT be able to ignore it and Obama will fuck up BIG TIME and that will be part of the story.
Suppose the volcano in Alaska that's threatening to blow does so - Alaska didn't vote for Obama, but in addition to saving a lot of lives (iirc, it's very near Fairbanks) the Federal response will dramatically expose the wizard behind the curtain for the small man he truly is - and the MSM is going to have to report it.

The OT levels (Operating Thetan) didn't exist from the beginning. They had a lot of members who had reached the top levels and they had to come up with some new levels to keep fleecing the flock.

So Hubbard turned to Battlefield Earth and BINGO. New level, new story to add to the myth and new money coming in.

Obama's Gregg Pick Worries GOP.

It worries me also. What is the story on Senator Gregg? I am a assuming he isn't a stalwart republican in the first place, but I don't have enough back information on him. But, if he takes the post that Obama is offering...they WILL have the 60 seat supra majority. It will be over. No. Stopping. The. Train. Government will be 1 party. (arguably it already is...but...)

What is your take(s)?

Well, the take I heard today is just what you said. It's a smart move, and the governor is a dem and will elect a dem to the post.

BINGO.

I think he should decline the nomination. Even if Lynch agrees to appoint a Republican to replace him, she could easily nominate a compliant RINO.

My money is that if he takes the post, they will appoint a (D)...what could the Repubs do but cry 'dirty pool'. That's it.

Kee-ripes. We'll have to hold out to see how this plays out.

Can't remember where it was on LGF that saw that, but I commented that Gregg had damn sure get those assurance in writing.
Seems to me unlikely that Gregg is really interested anyway - Secretary of Commerce? Gregg would have more power if he stayed in the Senate.

GOP: Gregg won't leave us 'in a lurch'
Comments raise questions of deal with Lynch
By LAUREN R. DORGAN

February 02, 2009 - 12:00 am

National Republicans beamed confidence yesterday that if New Hampshire Sen. Judd Gregg does leave the Senate, he won't be replaced by a Democrat, raising a flurry of speculation on whether Gov. John Lynch has agreed to a deal.

"Sen. Gregg has assured me that if (his departure) were to happen, if it were to happen, it would not change the makeup of the Senate," Minority Leader Sen. Mitch McConnell said on CBS's Face the Nation yesterday morning. "In other words, whoever is appointed to replace him would caucus with Senate Republicans, so I think it would have no impact on the balance of power in the Senate."

McConnell's comments raised some Democratic hackles in New Hampshire.

On the influential liberal blog Blue Hampshire, co-founder Dean Barker posted the address and phone number of the governor's office and called on fellow Democrats to "make something perfectly clear: Democratic Governor Lynch, appoint a Democrat to Judd Gregg's seat."

"Tell Governor Lynch that he should make his choice based on what's best for New Hampshire, not back-room deals from the Senate millionaire's club," Barker wrote last night.

The idea of a compromise candidate has brought a huge amount of interest in the national news media regarding a handful of old-fashioned centrist Republicans who have been friendly with Lynch. Eighty-six-year-old former governor Walter Peterson and former House speaker Doug Scamman have made dozens of news stories. Pundits also highlighted Bonnie Newman, a former University of New Hampshire dean and interim UNH president who led Republicans for Lynch and who has served as a top Gregg aide.

re: #686 Walter L. Newton
Yes Walter - I did read the article at Hot Air and it says, that

Unfortunately for Reid and Obama, Judd Gregg (R-NH) has not quite played along with Obama’s master plan:Sen. Judd Gregg (R-N.H.) won’t accept a position as President Obama’s Secretary of Commerce unless he is guaranteed his Senate seat remains in GOP hands, said two Republicans who know Gregg well.
Departing the Senate without one could give Democrats 60 members and a filibuster-proof majority.
“Gregg would never allow his seat to go to a Democrat, the only way he would allow it is if he died,” said a Republican close to Gregg. “He would consider it to be a breach of trust to people who elected it.” …
Republicans who know Gregg well say that Lynch must agree to select a Republican because Gregg, one of the most revered leaders in New Hampshire Republican politics, would not allow his seat to give Democrats filibuster-proof control of the Senate.

“He will not take Commerce secretary unless Lynch says he will appoint a Republican,” said the Republican close to Gregg.
Gregg has zero chance of getting any such commitment out of Lynch. Even if he did, he couldn’t hold Lynch to it after resigning the seat, although it might be difficult for Lynch to renege on a publicly stated commitment to appoint a Republican. Lynch would get attacked by his own party for making such a promise and attacked by Republicans if he broke it. As in the movie War Games, the only way for Lynch to win this one is not to play at all. [emphasis added, realwest]

Now I acknowledge that Gregg is a politician - a professional politician at that - and as such you can't believe what he's saying, but rather have to analyze the situation.
What would Gregg get: Secretary of Commerce - a big nothing job from which he could be shit canned at any time. If he stays in the Senate, then he has at least a fighting chance in 2010 because Republicans in
his State would support his re-election 100% and I think Michael Steele, as RNC head, would add whatever money, and clout that he could bear to help Gregg out in a re-election bid.
I'm betting Gregg doesn't take the job IF IT'S OFFERED - which it has not; Obama (who isn't quite as dumb as he seems) said he was considering Gregg for the position and Gregg said he felt honored to be considered - because it was the proper response to something said by the President of the United States.

Real, you beat me to it. Avanti, what you have failed to grasp about the discussions we have here is that we rely heavily on facts in our discussions. Sure, we make assumptions based facts but they are still facts. Unfortunately many comments and remarks you make are based on nothing more than leftist smear rhetoric generated from your own personal bias and what you hear in our disgustingly biased MSM. If you come here looking for an intelligent discussion based on facts you will get it. If you continue to come here and spew more of your own personal bias which you so candidly prop up with more straw man garbage and leftist smear rhetoric you will continue to get down dinged (-137 and counting). We don't tolerate that behavior from anyone, no matter the political affiliation.

Spot on with the response bit; you play the stupid game - "your honored if your mentioned as a possible candidate for something and you - deciding not to take the job if it's offered, then say "I'm honored to be chosen, but I simply can't accept the postion because [fill in the blank; I owe it to my constituents who voted for me, blah, blah, blah].

I've been downdinged for a truly benign comment before, by someone I don't recall ever interacting with. Seriously, I may as well have said, "I like ice cream." It happens. Sometimes people decide they don't like you (as apparently this person did with me), and some of them just downding every time they see your name, regardless of the content of your post. If you look, sometimes you'll notice a pattern of the same or a few of the same people downdinging one person, no matter how politely their view is expressed.

I've only downdinged you once, I think, but there was a reason. I don't downding someone unless I have real trouble with the content of a particular post. Disagreement isn't enough - it's got to really be out there (and it's usually got to be really rude) for me to hit the red button.
