Krauthammer: The Fierce Urgency of Pork

Opinion • Views: 2,636

Charles Krauthammer cuts through the smokescreen to the real issue: The Fierce Urgency of Pork.

It’s not just pages and pages of special-interest tax breaks, giveaways and protections, one of which would set off a ruinous Smoot-Hawley trade war. It’s not just the waste, such as the $88.6 million for new construction for Milwaukee Public Schools, which, reports the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, have shrinking enrollment, 15 vacant schools and, quite logically, no plans for new construction.

It’s the essential fraud of rushing through a bill in which the normal rules (committee hearings, finding revenue to pay for the programs) are suspended on the grounds that a national emergency requires an immediate job-creating stimulus — and then throwing into it hundreds of billions that have nothing to do with stimulus, that Congress’s own budget office says won’t be spent until 2011 and beyond, and that are little more than the back-scratching, special-interest, lobby-driven parochialism that Obama came to Washington to abolish. He said.

Catastrophe, mind you. So much for the president who in his inaugural address two weeks earlier declared "we have chosen hope over fear." Until, that is, you need fear to pass a bill.

And so much for the promise to banish the money changers and influence peddlers from the temple. An ostentatious executive order banning lobbyists was immediately followed by the nomination of at least a dozen current or former lobbyists to high position. Followed by a Treasury secretary who allegedly couldn't understand the payroll tax provisions in his 1040. Followed by Tom Daschle, who had to fall on his sword according to the new Washington rule that no Cabinet can have more than one tax delinquent. ...

Ah!
Change we can believe in!

Such obvious corruption going on between this and dems-don't-pay-taxes, that if we had a truly balanced msm this stuff would be shouted from the top of every mountain. Instead it's shouted from the conservative hillock, which is sometimes hidden by the forest of fear... or some crazy analogy.

In other words, the dems have really gone overboard and I think it's going to bite them hard... someday... maybe.

Didn't the Democrats say that the Patriot Act was rushed through - rammed through on grounds of national security and that they needed more time to weed out the offensive issues?

Now, they're in charge and ramming through their pet projects without caring one whit what it does to the economy and that it is a porkfest.

Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose.

Except this will cost us, especially since we've got a faith based economic policy that is proffered by a president acting like Eric Cartman who demands we respect his authoritay and must do as he says because he won.

It should be pointed out that Obama has been spreading fear and ignorance with his warnings of "Opacalypse" in order to get this Pork deal done, yet has only decided today to actually start the process of getting economic advice.

Talk about the cart before the horse.

How is it that one can claim this package is an economic necessity when you are waiting till after the deal is done to meet with economic advisers for the first time?

And to think people still buy this idea that Obama will be post-partisan and consult experts before taking action. In this case he certainly hasn't.

Dear Mr. President,

Please send me a few million dollars to stimulate my local economy. I can put it to work right away and benefit my neighbors as well as my own children. Some of the money will be used for local green projects such as new low energy use appliances for the new addition to my home, which will have the side benefit of stimulating the local home construction market. I will also replace my old high mileage cars with newer low emission cars helping the auto industry. Some of the money will be invested in higher education.

I know a few million will not be missed from the stimulus and by giving it directly to me and you will avoid overhead administrative costs. I am more than happy to do my part for our country and remember, its for the children.

It's just my (admittedly not expert) take on it, but it seems to me that the CBO report on the minimal impact of this bill may just be the nail in the coffin. If I were in Congress, I'd be hard pressed to vote for something that my own budget office told me was pretty lame.

Of course, that's probably why I'm not in Congress....but still....

The Age of Obama begins with perhaps the greatest frenzy of old-politics influence peddling ever seen in Washington. By the time the stimulus bill reached the Senate, reports the Wall Street Journal, pharmaceutical and high-tech companies were lobbying furiously for a new plan to repatriate overseas profits that would yield major tax savings. California wine growers and Florida citrus producers were fighting to change a single phrase in one provision. Substituting "planted" for "ready to market" would mean a windfall garnered from a new "bonus depreciation" incentive.

After Obama's miraculous 2008 presidential campaign, it was clear that at some point the magical mystery tour would have to end. The nation would rub its eyes and begin to emerge from its reverie. The hallucinatory Obama would give way to the mere mortal. The great ethical transformations promised would be seen as a fairy tale that all presidents tell -- and that this president told better than anyone.

I thought the awakening would take six months. It took two and a half weeks.

If we gave 1 Trillion back to the people that actually paid taxes, it would be about 8000 dollars a piece.

If we gave 1 Trillion away to every person regardless if they did anything or not, it would still be about 3000 dollars a person

Now would some one please ask everybody would you would rather have spend your money, since it's all taxes, it's ours to begin with. The Gov't or you?

Imagine how fast we'd be out of recession if we gave every person in America 3000 dollars.

If we gave 1 Trillion away to every person regardless if they did anything or not, it would still be about 3000 dollars a person
Screw that. Give me the 8 grand

UN halts Gaza aid after Hamas hijacks humanitarian aid convoy.

The United Nations today halted humanitarian supplies into Gaza after Hamas forces seized an aid convoy.

Members of the Islamist group which controls the territory took control of 10 trucks in the second such confiscation within two days.

The aid had been intended for the victims of the Israeli offensive which killed 1,300 Palestinians, left 5,000 wounded and thousands homeless.

Christopher Gunness, spokesman for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) which supports much of Gaza’s 1.5 million population, said: “The Hamas government must return all of the aid that’s been confiscated... and we have to be given by the Hamas government credible assurances that this will not happen again.

My favorite quote from the article:

"To me, being tardy, it's got to be one of two things," said presidential historian Doug Wead, who advised both Bush and his father, George H.W. Bush. "Bad organization that can be corrected, or it's arrogance. It sounds to me like this is arrogance."

Lateness is arrogance and a demand that the moment be about you. It is a reminder of who's really in charge. So, while those that are chronically late may appear blustery and disorganized, it's really someone who is trying to assert their authority.

As I wrote on an earlier thread. Obama has become Carter in less than three weeks. Obama getting rolled by the Burris seating was the catalyst. Because he caved so easily on that one, it set the stage for an even bigger collapse. Obama had a perfect chance after the House vote to reject the measure that passed, setting himself up to triangulate, Clinton-style between Republicans and liberal Democrats, to get a clean bill, but he missed it. Now he's doubled down on liberalism. He's all in, and can't back off now without appearing even weaker. His campaign-like speech to the Obamaniacs at the Department of Energy was even worse. He doesn't need to whine or demagogue, he needs to work the phones and get a clean bill from the Dem leadership.

So then why write the article if it is a very common practice everywhere? What was the author trying to accomplish? No...I think you are wrong. France is a shithole and getting worse each year.

The author was trying to accomplish what every left writer wants to accomplish, making conservatives look bad. France is currently run by a conservative. Over a million people hit the streets on strikes last week, because the government has been cutting back on handouts and social welfare. So, we suddenly get articles like this, designed to make the French government. So, there is a reason behind all of this.

And how much time have you spent in France? How much do you know, first hand about the country?

Do you care to explain?

I'm self-employed American living in Canada (I own a bike shop). The IRS refuses to give me the Bush tax rebate from last year because of a loophole in the legislation. My failure to qualify of the rebate exposed a discrimination loophole in the legislation. Effectively, someone in my scenario who lived in Canada but reported wages as an "employee" which were excluded from tax on their 2007 return qualified for the rebate, but I didn't because I was "self-employed." It is my accountant's understanding that the government considered changing the legislation to allow me to claim a rebate on my 2008 return, but he hasn't seen any change come through on that to date. WTF?

The new government strategic spending and oversight will do for our economy what the unrelenting scrutiny of the FDA has done for the food safety of peanut butter. Obviously, BHO is simply paying back the special interests for his election out of our pockets.

This is also a PR fight with those who want to turn everything over to "pristine and pure" government control and regulation, away from corrupt-by-definition capitalists.

But don't fool yourself, the people in charge are not as stupid as the people who voted for them. I believe there is a third agenda to bankrupt the US.

In my opinion, the best way to fight back is to broadly advertise the perpetual failures of government agencies, and to keep them in the public eye. The government solution, is to created layers of watchdog agencies, the conservative solution is to shrink the size of government.

And fear of competition, lawsuits, and jail time will keep the peanut butter safe.

I had a meaningful discussion with my 15 year old granddaughter recently.
We were discussing various and sundry wars (Civil, WWI, WWII, etc.), and the discussion started regarding who participated, and things like that. It was related to her schoolwork.
At one point, I asked her to name the one common thing that all wars had, whether we (the U.S.) were involved or not.

She made the usual guesses, which included dictators, being invaded, slavery, etc.

I told her "Look closer. There is a one word answer. Money".

We talked a bit longer, and I think she may have learned something.

Commie shit does not work, Obama is a full bore commie, and its not going to work, America will get to the point it can not pay its bills.

All due respect, America hasn't been paying its bills for awhile, now. China is our unofficial bank.

And the republicans had no problem with that during the Bush years...so, I guess they don't really think communism is all that bad.

If it was the last part, I think a lot of Republicans fail to recognize Communism, as opposed to wanting it.

The first part (China being our banker) is simply documented.

This is the kind of non-argument that passes for "debate" around here. Of course I've heard of global markets...that's what my posting was about.

As far as my statement about Republicans and Communism, your reaction is obtuse. Of course, I don't think Republicans approve of communism.

At the same time, it's a stretch to call Obama a Commie, as well.

That's the point I was making.

People on these boards get so defensive, that don't even know how to read between the lines or understand irony.

So Bush wrote the legislation and enacted it as well? Seems that you've absolved 535 other people of either their actions or inactions. We've got people in Congress who have no idea of what they are doing. We have people in government that are party tools and if the other side came up with something that would benefit the entire country, would reject it out of hand because it came from the wrong side of the aisle. We lack patriots in our government. We have party hacks masquerading as loyal Americans. How about a government that works for the people instead of working for a good slot in the government trough. Here in Minnesota we passed a Constitutional amendment to fund natural resources. What they've done with that money is to fund six dog parks and if you opt to use those dog parks you pay $25 for that privilege.

295 Lazarus  Fri, Feb 6, 2009 11:12:09am

If you're sick of Washington destroying America, stop putting corrupt men into power. Stop tolerating and supporting compromisers and pragmatists. Fight the culture of altruism that says you have to sacrifice for your brother, that it's wrong to live for yourself, and that "we all have to work together". Start supporting the ideas of objectivity and rational self-interest and capitalism.

My solution to the crisis is simple: print more money, and give it away by the bushel. Just keep printing more money. Print money, and hand it out. It' soooo simple.

I think my plan is every bit as viable as this special interest, pork-filled, non-stimulating stimulus. And think of all the printing, paper, and green ink jobs it creates.

The Age of Obama begins with perhaps the greatest frenzy of old-politics influence peddling ever seen in Washington.

324 FrogMarch  Fri, Feb 6, 2009 11:56:37am
The Daschle affair was more serious because his offense involved more than taxes. As Michael Kinsley once observed, in Washington the real scandal isn't what's illegal, but what's legal. Not paying taxes is one thing. But what made this case intolerable was the perfectly legal dealings that amassed Daschle $5.2 million in just two years.

He'd been getting $1 million per year from a law firm. But he's not a lawyer, nor a registered lobbyist. You don't get paid this kind of money to instruct partners on the Senate markup process. You get it for picking up the phone and peddling influence.

re: #29 DaddyG

Dear Mr.

Bravo you are to be commended for all of the spending you are willing to do to jump start the economy in your area. I think that we should all send a letter to our fearless leader telling him of our plans to help jump start the economy and sending the check directly to us to save the expense of it going like goose shit through a bureaucrat in DC

IF each household simply got to keep the money (of it was doled out evenly to each home in the USA) we could really stimumalte the economy.
BUT knowing it's a one-time thing I'd save a lot of it rather than fritter it away on the
42" plasma screen TV,
the Wii,
the iPhone 3G,
the Laptop,
the year's worth of groceries,
auto insurance,
satellite,
phone,
computer connection
it could pay for.
EACH of us could have all of that!

328 FredWM  Fri, Feb 6, 2009 12:54:12pm

Usually, when Democrats are initially elected, the first thing they do is raise taxes by claiming that the situation was worse then they knew. This allows them to have their cake and eat it too, as they can run for re-election as fiscal conservative (We haven't raised taxes in 3 years!) while spending taxpayers' money like a drunken sailor. This time, instead of raising taxes, which really would cause a depression, they will push through the largest all-pork dinner in history, because the situation is worse than they knew. This also allows them to have their cake and eat it too, as they can run for re-election as fiscal conservatives (We haven't squandered a trillion dollars in 3 years!) while spending taxpayers' money like a drunken sailor. Sound familiar?

329 mean Gene  Fri, Feb 6, 2009 1:01:16pm

Fred, you're making me crave carnitas.
(and cake)
But I think Inflation will be our next boogie man.
I well remember Carter's years and the misery index.
I remember that, at his first year in office I could go to the store with a dollar in change in my pocket and leave with a wonderful dinner, like veal cutlets or a whole chicken, rice or a few potatoes, fresh salad, spinach or green beans.
By the end of his term it took more than $4 to come home with that same food.
That was actually scarier to me than the high unemployment or the gas lines. I used a bicycle with a basket.
We had student loans and food stamps by the end of it....had to.
