The Associated Press helpfully informs us that the Iraqi journalist who threw shoes at President Bush was protesting the war.

BAGHDAD – The Iraqi journalist who threw his shoes at former President George W. Bush failed to apologize as his trial began Thursday, and instead appealed defiantly to the pride of his war-ravaged country.

In his first public appearance since he was taken into custody on Dec. 14, Muntadhar al-Zeidi said he did not intend to harm Bush or to embarrass Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.

“What made me do it was the humiliation Iraq has been subjected to due to the U.S. occupation and the murder of innocent people,” al-Zeidi said. “I wanted to restore the pride of the Iraqis in any way possible, apart from using weapons.”

Because nothing restores pride like throwing a shoe at the leader of the country that gave you a chance at democracy.

OK, so throwing shoes is what he thinks will restore their pride? I think toppling Hussein and giving them back control of their country from Hussein is a much bigger restorer of pride. But, that's just my opinion.

Hey, they may have fed people feet-first into wood chippers under Saddam, but at least their pride was intact.

Well, in a way, maybe it was. I think we westerners don't do a very good job of appreciating Arab cultural norms. Some of them would probably prefer to have half their family dragged off and wood-chipped than live in a country where security is being maintained by non-Arab foreigners.

And I think we err by assuming that most Arabs place any significant value in living in a democracy. I recall reading some polls of Arabs on the subject. It seemed like many of them were more interested in other things, like having more money to take care of their families, and living under Islamic law.

That is exactly what should be done. The court should tell him that if he so yearns for the days when Saddam was in charge, they will use the punishment that your dear leader would have meted out. He'd shit his pants, cry for mercy and beg GWB for forgiveness right on the spot.

Hundreds of Israelis who arrived at the Azrieli towers shopping center in Tel Aviv on Thursday really believed for a brief moment that money could potentially fall from the sky.

At around 4 P.M., hundreds began gathering outside the shopping center while a representative of a private company threw pieces of paper that looked like currency from the roof of one of the three Azrieli towers.

Well, if they can start to associate wealth and the ability to make money and keep it with democracy, that's a start in the right direction.

But I don't think they do make that association. I admit that I'm no expert on Arab culture. But my sense is that most Arabs living outside of the West view democracy as a concept that in and of itself has no particular positive or negative value. But the word "democracy" gets tossed around a lot by the infidel Jew-lovers, so, basically, it pisses them off, and they don't want any part of it.

The United States' presence in Pakistan and Afghanistan is only furthering the spread of terrorism and President Obama could be charged with war crimes, former Sen. Fritz Hollings (D-S.C.) wrote Wednesday.

re: #82 Last Mohican

And if I may rant a little more... I think that a cornerstone of GWB's policy for the Middle East was a sort of domino theory of democracy. If you forcibly install a democratic government in Iraq, a country that was formerly ruled by a brutal dictator, then suddenly the people there will see the beauty of Western ways, love America, accept Israel, and stop wanting to blow everyone up. The other Arabs will be jealous of their neighbors living in a democracy, and they'll demand democracy too. And then the whole region will just pacify itself and become friendly.

I think that was an utterly flawed idea, for many reasons. The most important is that, if the people of most Arab countries were allowed to elect a leader today, they'd elect the most hateful, violent jihadist available, and then voluntarily relinquish their right to vote ever again.

THE OLD MOTOR

The marriage of an 80-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman was the talk of the town.
After being married a year, the couple went to the hospital for the birth of their first child. The attending nurse came out of the delivery room to congratulate the old gentleman and said, "This is amazing. How do you do it at your age?" The old man grinned and said, "You got to keep the old motor running."

The following year, the couple returned to the hospital for the birth of their second child. The same nurse was attending the delivery and again went out to congratulate the old gentleman. She said, "Sir, you are something else. How do you manage it?" The old man grinned and said, "You gotta keep the old motor running."

A year later, the couple returned to the hospital for the birth of their third child. The same nurse was there for this birth also and after the delivery, she once again approached the old ge ntleman , smiled, and said, "Well, you surely are something else! How do you do it?" The old man replied, "It's like I've told you before, you got to keep the old motor running."

The nurse, still smiling, patted him on the back and said: "Well, I guess it's time to change the oil. This one's black."

I remember very clearly their desire for Western material stuff (jeans, Rock and Roll, the freedom of speaking your mind and the like) and remember all too clearly the crude and brutish way the USSR responded to "revolutions" in Hungary and in other places. I think GWB believed that if we set up a functioning democracy in Iraq and if the Iraqi's started to live a better life, that that would prove to be just as infectious in say Syria and Iran and would nudge, nudge and PUSH them into democracies as well. And if they wound up electing Islamists - and therefore screwed the people out of the material things, that the people would at least have a chance to vote the bums out. It may have been flawed thinking on his part, I think only time (if we have it) will tell.
I also didn't want us to invade Iraq. I wanted us to invade Iran instead. Iraq certainly was not going to go to the aid of the Iranians, nor were the Saudi's or the Egyptians or the Jordanians and Syria - well, we coulda taken care of Syria in a matter of days.

Hillbilly Mirror

After living in the remote wilderness of Kentucky all his life, an old hillbilly decided it was time to visit the big city. In one of the stores he picks up a mirror and looks in it. Not ever having seen one before, he remarked at the image staring back at him, 'How about that! Here's a picture of my daddy.' He bought the mirror thinking it was a picture of his daddy, but on the way home he remembered his wife didn't like his father. So he hung it in the barn, and every morning before leaving for the fields, he would go there and look at it. His wife began to get suspicious of these many trips to the barn. One day after her husband left, she searched the barn and found the mirror. As she looked into the glass, she fumed, 'So that's the ugly bitch he's runnin' around with.'

PHONE REPAIR

A Kansas farm wife called the local phone company to report her telephone failed to ring when her friends called - and that on the few occasions, when it did ring, her dog always moaned right before the phone rang.

The telephone repairman proceeded to the scene, curious to see this psychic dog or senile lady. He climbed a telephone pole, hooked in his test set, and dialed the subscriber's house.

The phone didn't ring right away, but then the dog moaned and the telephone began to ring.

Climbing down from the pole, the telephone repairman found:

1. The dog was tied to the telephone system's ground wire with a steel chain and collar.

2. The wire connection to the ground rod was loose.

3. The dog was receiving 90 volts of signaling current when the number was called.

4. After a couple of jolts, the dog would start moaning and then urinate.

5. The wet ground would complete the circuit, thus causing the phone to ring.

Which demonstrates that some problems CAN be fixed by pissing and moaning.

My difference from the Bush plan was that I would have moved the US into Lebanon in 2001, into Syria in 2002, into Iraq in 2003 and into Iran in 2004. Going for the strategic middle was bold but rolling up the flank would have helped. Of course I would have used real Declarations of War, tripled the size of the armed forces and used the opportunity to slash half of the civilian government.

i'm curious to know what kind of shift to sharia "family" law is going on in moslem enclaves in this country. like detroit and minneapolis (i think that's where the somalis are). it would most likely start in the home. w/ forced marriages, polygamy, restricting women generally.

Yeah, things were so much better back when Saddam was in power. Back when the police would execute people on the street. Then there was the occasional chemical bombings (gassing) of the Kurds. What a "progressive" society it was under Saddam and the UN blockade.

What a proud country it was under Saddam. I'm sure that if this "shoe thrower" had thrown a shoe at a visiting leader under the previous regime he would have been treated so delicately.

Several people are emailing me links to a story about a former FBI agent who's in the news for issuing warnings about a network of subversive Islamic agents implementing sharia law in the United States.

It took one Google search to find out that John Guandolo is associated with the wacko extremist religious group Christian Action Network.

Credibility: zero.

From Feb 2007:
Native American Courts: Precedent for an Islamic arbitral system *

Issa Smith

In the United States today, there is a system of courts which is just outside of the federal and state court systems, known as the American Indian Tribal Courts. The Tribal Courts deal with criminal, civil and family court issues, and have their own lawyers, judges, and court officials. The Muslim Community can learn from the experience of the American Indian Tribal Court System as we attempt to implement Muslim Family Law in North America.
[snip]

The process of implementing Muslim family law will not be accomplished overnight. Changes of their type take place very slowly in American society, and our community is far from being prepared for this tak. I commend the continental council of Masajid for organizing this conference, and bringing together so many workers and thinkers. I pray to Allah [snip]

re: #117 Last Mohican

This is a straw-man argument, and ignores things that have happened in the Middle East since 2003.

I don't think anybody ever suggested that democracy in Iraq would instantly lead to the democratization of the rest of the Muslim world. That process, if it happens, will take decades.

Your contention that the invasion of Iraq was supposed to cause the region to simply "pacify itself" shows that you don't really understand the Bush Administration's strategy. Insurgents--which is what terrorists are--are kind of like mosquitoes: you can't swat them all, so if you want to get rid of them you have to drain the swamp.

You counteract an insurgency by fighting them on the battlefield and by alleviating the social and economic factors that drive them to take up arms in the first place. You increase the danger they face, and reduce their reason for fighting. You don't necessarily make them happy; you don't necessarily make them love you. You simply improve conditions to the point where their young men are no longer enraged enough to give up their lives.

It's like stopping a pot from boiling over. You don't have to turn off the heat--you just have to turn it down a little.

Democracy in Iraq is only now taking its first few faltering steps on its own, so it's unrealistic to expect to see widespread democratic movements yet. But we've already seen a new desire for democracy in Lebanon. Nobody said this would be a clean or easy process, and we've seen the move toward democratization in Lebanon run into obstacles set by the Syrians and their Hezbollah proxies.

The strategy won't bear fruit overnight, but it's always worked in the past.
