Kerry in Dreamland

Lurch says: “We want Syria to help with the disarmament of Hezbollah.”

BEIRUT (AFP) – Senator John Kerry said on Wednesday that the new US administration will press Syria to help disarm Lebanese militant group Hezbollah as it forges ahead with a fresh diplomatic approach in the region.

“We want Syria to respect the political independence of Lebanon, we want Syria to help in the process of resolving issues with Hezbollah and with the Palestinians,” said Kerry, after meeting President Michel Sleiman and Prime Minister Fuad Siniora.

“We want Syria to help… with the disarmament of Hezbollah,” added the former US Democratic presidential candidate, who is also due to visit Damascus on his regional tour.

I’m sure they’ll get right on it, immediately after unclenching their fist.

Kerry stressed that a growing rapprochement between the United States and Syria would not come at Lebanon's expense.

"Whatever discussions we have in Syria or in Egypt or in Saudi Arabia ... nothing, I can assure you, will occur that will come at the expense of our relationship with Lebanon," he said.

Another oblivious attempt by Senator Kerry. Sure, the new administration will "press" Syria to "change its ways" in an instant now that Oh Glorious Leader Who is Obama has sent him to speak for America. In a snap of a finger, Kerry will reverse decades of strife, and pacify an ad hoc fascist state.

I'm sure we can "trust" Syria after this visit. I mean how can they not be persuaded by Senator Kerry -- he's such a likable guy. Take a look, it's worked with the Palestinians, Hamas, Iran, and North Korea. Look at how "progressive" Egypt has become over the years.

Then I remembered how screwed up Kerry's navigation was in Vietnam (he accidentally wound up in Cambodia) and realized he hadn't followed Ellison's lead and just made yet another wrong turn.

Do any Minn. lizards out here know if Ellison's visit to Gaza was in the Minn. MSM? Is Ellison going to go to Israel?

The US is about to bring back it's ambassador to Syria:

State doesn’t deny Syria envoy report
February 19, 2009

WASHINGTON (JTA) -- A State Department spokesman would not deny a report that the Obama administration is considering returning an ambassador to Syria.

Gordon Duguid was asked to comment on an interview in the British daily newspaper The Guardian in which Bashar Assad, Syria's president, said he expected the United States to send an ambassador.

"Those people in the State Department who are conducting our review on our policy towards Syria have also seen the article," Duguid said Wednesday. "We’re not at the end of that review of policy yet, and so I don’t have an official reaction to those statements for you. However, Syria can play a role, and a positive role, in the region by trying to help bring peace and stability to the Middle East. And I think the Syrians understand that they can do that."

The interview took place on the eve of Assad's meeting with U.S. Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.), the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee who is close to President Obama.

"An ambassador is important," Assad told the Guardian. "Sending these delegations is important. This number of congressmen coming to Syria is a good gesture. It shows that this administration wants to see dialogue with Syria."

President Bush withdrew the U.S. ambassador in 2004, using the provisions of the Syria Accountability Act, the legislation passed in 2003 that authorizes sanctions as a means of pressuring Syria to end its backing for terrorism, its meddling in Lebanon and Iraq ,and its major weapons programs.

These were clearly pre-written statements that they could send to anyone on either side.
Quick summaries:
Tsongas: the loss of life on both sides is tragic and the 0bama administration must work to bring peace.
Kennedy: (About a week and a half after I sent it) "We need a durable solution..." "... need to work with our allies in Europe and the Middle East to end the violence and achieve a lasting peace"

It depends. I didn't get my hard copy of the Certificate of Honorable Discharge (the one that looks like a diploma) until 5 years after Discharge. You remain obligated to the Army for 8 years no matter if your initial enlistment is 3 or 5 or whatever years. Not sure if something like that is at play with Kerry.

Be ready to strike and destroy North Korea's missile test
By Philip Zelikow

In 2006, the United Nations drew a clear line, acting under Chapter VII of its Charter. Today, in 2009, the United States need not stand by and watch North Korea cross that line. Non-military measures were given a fair try. Now the political predicate for the Carter-Perry recommendations has been well laid.

The logical next step, after high-level discussions in the U.S. government and consultation with our allies, is to issue North Korea a warning to stand down (conveyed either directly, indirectly, or through a leak of planning to strike and destroy the missile). Pyongyang would either then stand down silently or they would not. We lose little from the warning if I'm right in estimating that the North Koreans cannot protect the test missile from a U.S. strike once they stand it up on the gantry. Our warning would be that, if you stand up the missile (itself a plain violation of UN Security Council Resolution 1718), the United States will take it down. The North Korean perfection of a long-range nuclear missile capability against the United States, Japan, or the Republic of Korea would pose an imminent threat to the vital interests of our country.

If the United States strikes North Korea's missiles on their launch site, other would-be proliferators will take notice -- thus lending much greater weight to the fresh diplomatic initiatives the Obama administration has in mind. The downside, as in 2006, is the possibility of North Korean escalation against South Korea. The United States must consider its own security, the security of its Japanese ally, and the security of its South Korean ally. Ideally, all should arrive at a common understanding of what must be done to protect their long-term security.

re: #156 realwest

Hey jcm, now you know why TFK and I and, I suspect, all Vietnam Veterans on LGF HATE Kerry - his Winter Soldier SWORN testimony to Congress painted ALL of us as being guilty of war crimes.
Yet during his brave (albeit shortened) tour of duty he reported none of what he claims to have seen, thereby violating his oath when he entered the service and his duties as an officer. So when was he lying - when he spoke under oath to Congress or when he performed his duties as an officer while in Vietnam?

As the daughter of a Viet Nam Vet- I despise his very name. . .a POX on this entity

re: #167 Lincolntf

Hi all.

Anyway, he was my Senator for the better part of my life and I wouldn't cross the street to put him out if he was on fire.

Getting the hard copy after your inactive reserve is one thing. Kerry had a review board, you didn't have a review board. You get a review board to CHANGE something. If his DD-214 came out of the review board Honorable, what was it before it was changed?

We may want to demonstrate that we can take it down with an improved Aegis cruiser off the coast during launch phase. Or intercept at apogee with the missiles in Alaska. The Axis of Upheaval
By Niall Ferguson

The bad news for Bush’s successor, Barack Obama, is that he now faces a much larger and potentially more troubling axis—an axis of upheaval. This axis has at least nine members, and quite possibly more. What unites them is not so much their wicked intentions as their instability, which the global financial crisis only makes worse every day. Unfortunately, that same crisis is making it far from easy for the United States to respond to this new “grave and growing danger.”

For at least 4 years, more like the full eight years. The "conservatives" are working on self destructing by running back behind the skirts of the religious right and mixing their politics with a dose of the "moral majority" again.

It's already back firing in their face. Look at the recent connections with "conservatives" and fascist leaning groups and persons.

Plus the fact that most of the Republican politicians are playing the same cards with special interests and big money.

Except for the social issues, it's hard to tell them apart.

Zimbabwe state employees to be paid in US dollars

The face of the armed policeman stationed outside the Russian Embassy yesterday said it all: he grinned widely when asked if he had been paid in hard currency. His monthly pay last month of 30 trillion Zimbabwe dollars could not buy so much as a single banana today...The Central Bank recently knocked 12 zeros off the local currency — turning one trillion dollars into one dollar — in an effort to get the economy moving again, to no avail.

Wow.

And you can squarely blame it on the Republicans, no one else.

We want Syria to help... with the disarmament of Hezbollah

Of course Syria will help with disarming Hezbollah......for a price.

I estimate they will ask $2.3 BILLION dollars to make this happen, but of course they can't guarantee "all" the weapons will be removed, but the money will be well spent.

This might be worth it. Detaching Syria from Iran and negotiating peace between Israel and Syria would be a big achievement. We got Egypt to do this in the 70's at $2 billion a year. This still wont progress the stupid 2 state solution. Plus how helpful is Egypt really?

Final analysis: It costs money and does not solve the core issues. Sounds like Obama to me.

Kerry is in Gaza now. Check who is with the delegation:

Mr. Kerry said that his visit indicated no change in American policy toward Hamas, which is labeled a terrorist group by the United States, and that he would not be meeting with Hamas leaders.

“Hamas has to change its policies,” Mr. Kerry said while visiting the ruins of the American International School in Gaza, which was destroyed by an Israeli air attack in early January. “There is no change in our policy.”

Separately, two other congressmen visited Gaza — Representative Brian Baird, Democrat of Washington, and Representative Keith Ellison, Democrat of Minnesota. Their trip was arranged independently of Mr. Kerry’s but included similar tours of destroyed areas and meetings with United Nations officials.

Although none of the Americans saw Hamas officials, a senior Hamas leader said he was pleased by their visit.

Fools and their money.

Friend called to get my take on his idea of buying a new tractor. Said he needed a farm deduction.

I asked him, "Let's see. You owe two payments on your current tractor, which has 179 hours on it. You want to trade that in and go $15 grand in dept to buy another tractor just for a deduction? You're going to have to explain that to me again, in smaller words, because I can't seem to make sense of your argument. Hell, with only 179 hours on your present tractor I'd guess that you could rent a neighbor's unit and come out way ahead."

It is a huge delusion to imagine that would be possible. Syria has been at war with Israel continuously since 1948. The regime would not survive "peace" with Israel, they need the constant enemy to keep their people oppressed. Furthermore, Iran has been bankrolling the Syrians for years now. The Iranians have over 100,000 IRG agents in Syria as "military advisers". They will not easily allow the Syrians to break away. The notion that America can bribe Syria away from Iran is very popular among Democratic foreign policy wonks, but it is dead wrong.

Police: Doughnut shop worker slashes man's tires

Police say a worker at a Massachusetts Dunkin' Donuts slashed the tires on a customer's Jeep after the two got into an argument Tuesday.

Thirty-nine-year-old Thomas Zazulak was charged with malicious destruction of property and disturbing the peace.

Police say the dispute broke out when the customer—whose name wasn't released—started to leave because he was tired of waiting for the cup of coffee he ordered.

Words were exchanged, then Zazulak allegedly followed him outside, pulled out a folding knife and slashed the tires.

I find it very hard to believe there wasn't a cop there to stop him.

Fools and their money.
..snip..
I don't understand new economics, I really don't.

It's the same Liberal new-Math that causes Moonbats to ditch their old, already paid-off cars that get mediocre fuel economy, and go 26 grand in debt to buy a Prius. Then they drive them 80 mph in the fast lane on the freeway 90% of the time so the battery part is rarely used. It will take them about 12 to 15 years of Prius driving vs just keeping their old car in order to break-even money-wise with gas prices in the $3-ish neighborhood.

I tried to explain this to a friend who was buying a Prius. You'd think I called his mother a whore by the reaction I got.

It's part of the stimulus bill.

--- Unemployment benefits ---

Recipients of unemployment insurance would qualify for an extra $25 a week in benefits, and coverage for as long as 40 weeks. The first $2,400 in unemployment benefits would not be subject to federal taxes. Recipients would be able to get government help to cover 65 percent of the cost of continuing their health coverage for as long as nine months.

I disagree, when Syria demands money for this (and they will)..there is no accountability of where the money is being spent. I would guess whatever we send to them, 85%-90% will go into a black hole.

Mandy's right, you would want to monitor it daily--especially if you post a lot of "real" information about you on your profile (Pix, hometown, etc.). People sometimes put their whole lives "out there", others set up pseudo-profiles. You can control how much about you that others see, though. Also, as was mentioned above, a pseudo-profile does kinda defeat the whole purpose of social networking if you want your real friends to be able to reach you and exchange pics, vids, etc.

If people would post on the wall at the Little Green Footballs group page their LGF nic it would make it easy.

I tried that myself, but the stupid verification words wouldn't let me post! I went to the "verify identity" page and they want a cell phone number -- I wouldn't give that out even if I had one!

Dont know if this has been said

“We want Syria to respect the political independence of Lebanon, we want Syria to help in the process of resolving issues with Hezbollah and with the Palestinians,”

Will that be by giving arms to Syria?

re: #358 esch

Hmm.

Just heard off FoxNews that Kerry accepted a letter from Hamas for Obama. Contents obviously undisclosed.

Great.

The Coming Storm [Victor Davis Hanson]

Will Obama and company, through inspired diplomacy, solve any lingering tension from the Bush administration over missile defense in Europe, the soon-to-be Iranian bomb and missiles, or the European so-so role in Afghanistan? Will they find a novel, kinder, and gentler way to thwart possible al-Qaeda Mumbai-copycat killers here at home, to defang North Korea, to talk sense to the Russians to stay in their confining borders, and to persuade Hamas to act more like Fatah?

I seriously doubt it. Instead, this serial apologizing, promising a new age of listening and togetherness, and trashing the Bush administration will have two consequences: Enemies will begin to think there is a tad less likelihood now that the U.S. will respond forcefully to a terrorist attack (since “Bush did it” in the past) without first consulting allies, trying to find a diplomatic solution, or going to the U.N.; and, second, friends will slacken a bit, knowing that our prime interest is in the means of multilateralism rather than any objective ends: one now “dialogues” over troops in Afghanistan, and “discusses” whether to follow through on missile defense, and “listens” to “all the parties” like Syria and Iran for “constructive” suggestions about Middle East peace. In short, a bad idea to trash the past when much of it was good, and point happily to the future when it may well be far worse.

We are setting ourselves up for a repeat of Jimmy Carter’s “Our kindness and intellect will save the world,” but this second time as farce.

Get over the idea that all right thinking people are the "religious right".

The Democrat party has it's fair share of religious views. You almost sound like a DK poster who thinks that all Republicans are stupid, deviant, war mongering, ugly, don't deserve to live etc.

I am not fond of the Democrats who are in power now because I do not feel that they are acting on behalf of the American public. Maybe a certain sector, but certainly not all.

To be honest, that's mostly what I thought before hanging out on LGF. It may not be true, but it is the face the GOP puts on it but catering to the religious right.

I'd like to know which sector they're acting on the behalf of the American public. I can't for the life of me think of a single one where they're not doing things for their own interests instead of the country.

I really don't think that LGF is totally "religious right". If you have been here long enough you should know that. Some are not religious at all and some are very devout. To me, being religious is not the total character in a person.

As a whole, I feel that the left side is much more angry and bitter and yes, prejudiced.

Kerry keeps talking about what "we want" but history teaches us that Syria and, to an ever greater extent, the terror groups don't give a gnat's knuckle "what we want." How can an elected re-elected official be so dim?

Is it true that, to ensure that they remain 'perfect a**holes,' some ranking members of Congress travel with their own proctologist?

Shame that you're not French.

French city workers flee financial chaos in London and return home to '£70,000 unemployment benefits'

Now many are returning home, to what appears to be a guaranteed life of some luxury on social security benefits well above the average national wage.

Incredibly, many would not have been paying French social security contributions when in London.
