Cap and trade is pure cut-me-a-deal. People who know the right people will be able to buy indulgences to emit carbon. These indulgences will have no relation to real carbon abatement. Trees planted in rocky and unwatered ground will count as if they had already grown to maturity and been cut down and sequestered. Yes, Virginia, that's how it works.
For the rest, it'll be a tax that doesn't count as a tax on the government's books. Sigh. Pay up.
As an AGW partial convert, I'm just sick. This will make it all the more impossible to actually do anything real about the problem. Opposition to this dirty trick will fuse with opposition to the whole notion that there's a problem. If there's a problem, we'll be sorry we didn't do anything real about it. If there isn't, we'll be sorry we messed our economy over, for nothing.

Why South Korea? Do they produce the most efficient batteries, or do Obama's cronies have a stake?
He didn't say they must. But for now, that's where the best batteries come from. Obama is right, for once. We should be able to make batteries ourselves. Geez. How hard can it be?

Technically, it's not hard.
What's hard is doing it while meeting the absurd regulations the Democrats have put in place and still making a profit.

He is scripted... he's replying to the SOTU.
Palin is a natural, and she was a broadcast journalist on air before running for office... hard act to follow.
He'll get better. I don't know if he's what we need nationally, but it's not his speech pattern that is the problem for me.

I love Louisiana, and the locals are some of the nicest around and he's probably one of them, but his speech was not great. Fox just panned it.
232 | topazpilot Tue, Feb 24, 2009 7:39:27pm |
Not impressed. The message was good but the delivery was subpar, at best. But, as Brit Hume stated, the response is always at a disadvantage.

BHO's uptone in inflection after every phrase, and his studied hesitation between words... forget all the uhhhs and errrs.... is very annoying to me.
It is distracting, though, and makes his groupies forget that he has actually said Not Much.
Now his aura.... that's different. I think that's what attracts you. It's very shiny and almost opalescent.

I lived there for four years and love it too, and Fox had no comment on his speech pattern, which was what we were discussing. They also said that any speaker has a tough act to follow after the SOTU.
238 | Picayune Tue, Feb 24, 2009 7:41:43pm |
Brit Hume sez: "this was not Jindal's most oratorical moment." Krauthammer sez Jindal had a hard act to follow. Juan Williams sez Jindal didn't pull it off, "was not the best from this young man form Louisiana." All are on target.
239 | topazpilot Tue, Feb 24, 2009 7:42:22pm |
Of course, I've never been impressed with Obama's oratory either. Everyone gushed over his 2004 convention speech and I was simply unimpressed and though it was bland and forgettable. But, then again, I'm not an Obamabot.
