Some people don't have enough drama in their lives.

Me, I want a sock, but I can read rules.

And with four daughters, I have seen enough drama for several lifetimes.

We Can Win In Afghanistan byt Max Boot

First there was Ann Marlow in the Wall Street Journal arguing that Afghanistan doesn't need a surge of U.S. troops. Instead, she argues, we should support an expansion of the Afghan National Police. This should be coupled, she believes, with an administration statement "that the U.S. prefers Mr. Karzai not seek another term" and that we would like to see major changes in the Afghan Constitution to allow provincial councils and parliamentarians to be elected on a district rather than a provincial basis, and for governors to be elected rather than appointed by the central government.

I've already explained in the Washington Post why I think it's foolish to blame all the problems of Afghanistan on Karzai's supposed incompetence and/or corruption. This is part of a pattern, one that we saw in Iraq as well as previously in Vietnam: When things are going well in a foreign war, we take the credit for ourselves. When things are going badly, we blame our local allies -- whether Diem in Vietnam, Maliki in Iraq, or Karzai in Afghanistan. This approach ignores the reality that if we do a better job of creating security on the ground, then local leaders will be able to exercise more authority -- as has happened in the past year in Iraq.

Read the whole thing if you can spare the time...

Aquatic life emits gases

MUSSELS, freshwater snails and other underwater creatures emit a potent greenhouse gas as they feed, according to a study that adds a small aquatic dimension to the impact of wildlife on global warming.

The animals, also including worms and insect larvae, emitted nitrous oxide - commonly known as laughing gas - as a by-product of their digestion when nitrate was present in water.

Scientists recently found that the Earth has been warming ever since insects and snails first started farting. Other scientists also found that the Earth has been cooling during some of this time, but the overall trend has been up. Except when it was down, but the instruments used at times of cooling were affected by some technobabble, so it's been warming, definitely warming. Maybe not definitely warming, but changing for sure. Drastically changing at times.

In an official protest to the United Nations, the Israel's Ambassador Gabriela Shalev noted that "there have been nearly 100 rocket and mortar attacks from the Gaza Strip" since the ceasefire on January 18, or over two per day. These have been increasing in number, with 12 rockets were fired at Sderot on March 1 alone.

This will only be reported the next time Israel invades.

"Stimulus" Projects Will Be Stamped With Official Logo

Put a stamp on it -- that’s what the White House says.

President Obama announced today that his administration will begin stamping an emblem on projects funded by the economic stimulus package so that people can easily recognize the effects of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

All projects will be stamped with the ARRA logo (short for the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act) and lists the recovery.gov website on the emblem.

In remarks at the Department of Transportation this morning, Mr. Obama referenced the new emblems.

“We’re also making it easier for Americans to see what projects are being funded with their money as part of our recovery. So in the weeks to come, the signs denoting these projects are going to bear the new emblem of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act,” Obama said. “These emblems are symbols of our commitment to you, the American people -- a commitment to investing your tax dollars wisely, to put Americans to work doing the work that needs to be done. So when you see them on projects that your tax dollars made possible, let it be a reminder that our government -- your government -- is doing its part to put the economy back on the road of recovery.”

Sounds like Obama is digging up another old FDR idea, does he not have an original thought in his head?

Earle has been married seven times, including twice to the same woman. His wives were Sandra (Sandy) Henderson, Cynthia Dunn, Carol Hunter (with whom he had his first child, Justin), Lou-Anne Gill (with whom he had a second son, Ian), Maria Teresa Ensenat, Lou-Anne Gill a second time, and finally, in 2005, singer-songwriter Allison Moorer. He also has an illegitimate daughter. His first son, Justin Townes Earle, is also a musician, and is named for Townes Van Zandt.

The Blue Eagle.

I hope some of his crap goes the way of the NIRA.

U.S. Says Threat of Mexican Drug Cartels Approaching 'Crisis Proportions'

Two of Mexico's deadliest drug cartels have reached a combined force of 100,000 foot soldiers, wreaking havoc across the country and threatening U.S. border states, the U.S. Defense Department told The Washington Times.

The official also said the cartels have reached a size where they are on par with Mexico's army of 130,000.

About 7,000 people have died in the last year — more than 1,000 in January alone — at the hands of Mexico's increasingly violent drug cartels. Murders often involve beheadings or bodies dissolved in vats of acid.

Wake up liberals...this threat is knocking at our door.

Hey J.S., I had a cat that looked a lot like that once. Got him for turnspawn when his was a toddler, we name him Jellybean. That was the coolest cat I ever had, so mellow you could literally pick him up from his neck. No kidding, I impressed many people with that trick and he didn't mind a bit.

British colonial attempts to inflict this on Kenyan natives led to the bloody Mamaw Rebellion.

Which, though it ended succesfully, began the corrupt reign of notorious dictator/former optometrist "Papa" Oom Mamaw.

It's a campaign by PETA (people for the ethical treatment of animals), the radicals want people to start identifying tuna (and other edible species of fish) as "sea kittens" -- then (so PETA figures) people won't eat the "sea kitties" etc. (either that, or people suddenly start looking at kittens in a different way...OR's "source of protein"?)

i think his problem was booze and drugs.
he's clean now.
i have seen him perform when he looked like he weighed 90 lbs.
i didn't think he would even be able to make the stage.
but what a show. 3 hrs. of just him, playing everything.
his band the dukes had moved on.
and then when he weighed 350 lbs,
his teeth all feel out and he has dental implants.
he spent a yr. living in doorways in nashville,
i'm glad he's clean but he should shut up and sing,

Is America dying?

This thought has been rattling my head these past few weeks. Is this what it looks like when a great nation loses it's will to remain great? Is this what happens when a single generation is never taught the lessons of what made us great? Is this what happens when the mass of the voting public prefer "safety nets" to opportunity? Is this what happens when a country invests everything it has on treating the economically wounded and allows the viral disease that is the source of poverty to ravage the healthy? Do we really prefer cannibalism to earning a living?

Is this what the end looks like? I wonder.

No horse loaded down with a rider and gear could make that descent. That scene roils me every time I see it. No way, no how.

You know that describes my cat's attitude -- mellow...He's sooo laid back...(his father was a wandering stray -- had all the same markings -- the white paws, white bib, rest black -- and within a few months, in our neighbor, there suddenly appeared all these little kittens, looking just like the father cat, that black coat with the white markings -- anyway, the neighbor had one of these kittens, and their daughter would dress the kitten up as a baby -- cat dressed up with baby hat and bib on -- and the little girl would put the cat in a stroller, then push the stroller around, with the kitten totally non-plussed, the kitten just looking around, and seemingly enjoying being wheeled around...it was funny...but I don't think many cats/kittens would have put up with it...)

All over the new yesterday, we heard that the market closed at a level not seen since April 28, 1997.

To put you in an April 28, 1997 mindset, consider this:

• Clinton was still the president, and no one had to clarify which President they meant when they said "President Bush".

• The World Trade Center Towers were still standing, and asking someone if they recall the famoun historical event happened on Sept. 11 would've been considered nothing more than a trivia question.

• Mac fans were still hoping Steve Jobs would return to Apple someday. The phrases iPod and iTunes didn't exist yet.

• Princess Diana was still alive (but only until August 31st of that year).

re: #413 Sharmuta

I agree with Killgore. We can't start thinking like this. Now's the time to keep our wits about us, and come up with solutions.

OK. Let's ask ourselves what we can do. I think that you and I know what should be done. And there are many solutions. My advice would be to eliminate corporate taxation entirely. It would also be to eliminate all health care tax breaks for employers so that we no longer have group policies and instead the suppliers must compete to win over market share from the hundreds of millions of consumers. We should have a flat income tax, to include all sources of income (dividends, capital gains, etc) and no deductions. I'm sure you have ideas of your own that would be just as good as mine.

But how do we stop the insanity and bring any productive, healthy ideas to fruition? In my opinion, Americans pretty much knew what they were voting for this last fall. And it wasn't just anti-Bush. Our country has arrived at a point where people WANT mommy and daddy in DC to take care of them. They WANT safety more than opportunity. I fear that that is what a majority of us have become.

David Brooks had a column in the NYT today that essentially was posting his regrets.

I don't want to read about their regrets.
I want them to vote Republican in 2012.
I want them to send nasty regret letters to Obama, telling him what regrets they have, and why they will vote Republican in 2012.

As funny as that is, I honestly can't stand that kind of sentiment. I voted*, and I am not fucking sorry.

*not for Obama

I have to agree. If Obama had done something completely out of left field to surprise these people I could understand. But everything he has done has either been in the playbook or follows the past that they CHOSE to ignore. They should stick by their candidate for more than a month. I think a more accurate statement is: "We're bored with Obama. Giive us a new celebrity to worship."

I don't know about anyone else, but Obama saying it's a good time to buy stock makes me want to sell the stocks/mutual funds I still hold. Geez-o-Pete, why would anyone take investment advice from a Marxist?

He knows it is becoming an issue. He tried to soft pedal it as "gyrations" but then went to "good time to buy long term".

Thing is that you are right - it probably isn't. Obama is restructuring the economy, cutting off all access to capital for small businesses, imposing huge new constraints on businesses and talks down the economy at every opportunity.

Oh - and he is going to cure cancer.

I keep bringing that last point up because it reveals the mindless vanity of the man. He is not a biochemist. He knows nothing about oncology. But he figures that one of several promising therapies are on the way that may just put many cancers behind us. Not because of him or his policies, but because "greedy" capitalists funded biotech companies. He will destroy that system, but first he will collect for himself the credit for the greatest fruits of that system.

I ran into the word by accident. Actually, I have to set the record straight. I came across an archaic version of it in Plautus (algus) and when I looked it up in my dictionary it defined it as algor and referenced Cicero. Unfortunately, the damn print is so fine that I missed the cf. in front of Cicero. So Cicero did not actually use that word but others, cited in that link, did.

Guess what? People who earn over $250K will stop making charitable contributions. Who needs all that cancer research, feeding the homeless, endowing scholarships, or donating to the arts anyway? With universal health care, we'll just die of cancer. With that economic "recovery" plan, we'll all end up homeless. I said this earlier today, but will say it again: I re-watched Mr. Smith Goes To Washington last night. If you have not seen it lately, re-view it.

It is amazing how much the "deficiency bill" in the film, which contains the graft provision, resembles the Porkulus. And it is a reminder that corruption in our politics is nothing new--but that Capra, and many others, believed that if each person remained true to his ideals and was willing to fight, it was possible to triumph even over a strong political machine.

I watched it on Christmas Eve. I could not keep the Obama/Chicago imagery out of my head while I watched. This was pre-Porkulus, though.

And Jean Arthur is still kick-ass in it.

re: #661 buzzsawmonkey

This last time, I found the scene where Rains asks Arnold to go easy on James Stewart, and the subsequent scenes, absolutely devastating.

Arnold, without ever losing his geniality, basically tells Rains that if he does not stay in line he will break him completely. Rains hesitates, then caves; Arnold, relieved, says, "You had me worried for a moment"--because he knows that his power, money and goons notwithstanding, can last only as long as people stand for it. He then spits in disgust at Rains as Rains leaves through a back door; he despises the man he needs and uses because he allows himself to be used.

The next scene, where Arnold tries to get Stewart in line, is overwhelming; Stewart realizes not only the extent of the corruption he is facing, and that the man--Rains--he has admired all his life is part of it, but he realizes that, in looking at Arnold, he is looking at the man who ordered the murder of his own father. The horror and rage, barely contained, that Stewart radiates is awe-inspiring.

Claude Rains sold that character so well. Nowadays it would be played so differently and the vulnerability that makes the viewer understand the flaw in Senator Paine would be replaced by something more overt. Nowadays he'd probably just be an evil jerk like Taylor.

Obama's claiming that he'll "cut" $2 trillion from the budget over ten years.

You don't really think he's going to cut spending, do you?

Of course not.

So here's how he comes up with $1.6 trillion of his $2 trillion in "cuts:" He takes the 2008, peak-of-the-surge cost of the Iraq War as our permanent Iraq War spending baseline. He extends that out ten years -- including goosing it down the line for inflation.

Then he notes that he's ending a war which was actually pretty much ended by our troops (and the Iraqis, too) by defeating Al Qaeda and ending the insurgency.

Then he says, "Hey, man, look -- every year I'm going to be saving money on those Iraq War costs! Count it as a 'cut'!"
