Terror Attack In Pakistan

World • Views: 1,990

Another highly organized Islamic terror attack in Pakistan, as a team of killers attacked the Sri Lankan cricket team, with tactics similar to the Mumbai terrorists.

In a commando-style operation, a dozen gunmen attacked the Sri Lankan cricket team in the heart of Lahore, Pakistan’s cultural and political hub, at 8:45 Tuesday morning. The attackers fired rockets, grenades and multiple rounds of ammunition at the team’s bus and the police escorting it, killing eight people and injuring six. To some eyewitnesses, it was last November’s Mumbai attacks replayed on Pakistani soil. (See pictures of this terrorist attack.)

Amid thick morning traffic in Lahore’s Liberty Square, the gunmen ambushed the bus as it approached the Gaddaffi cricket stadium. “I heard the attack and spun around,” recalls Abdul Ghani Butt, 30, a foreign-currency dealer who was on his way to work at the time. “It was just like the Mumbai attacks. They were young, about 25-to-30 years of age, coming from different directions. Some were clean-shaven, others bearded. They were wearing tracksuits and carried backpacks. One of the men then put down his rocket launcher and pulled out a rifle. He changed the magazine so quickly that it could only have been done by a professional. The others were walking around so calmly, across the grass in the roundabout.”

The gunmen killed five policemen, two bystanders and the bus driver. Six members of the Sri Lankan cricket team were injured. Two of the cricketers were shot, while others sustained minor injuries from flying debris. The reserve umpire for the ongoing test match, Ahsan Raza, a Pakistani, is in critical condition.

Further to that report:

All 14 gunmen escape after deadly attack on Sri Lankan cricketers in Lahore

'Up to 14 gunmen are on the run after a terror attack on the Sri Lankan national cricket team today in which seven cricketers were hurt and at least seven people died.
Heavily armed attackers working in pairs opened fire on the team's tour bus and a minibus carrying match officials, as their convoy was on the way to the third day's play in the second Test against Pakistan at the Gaddafi stadium in Lahore.
Six policemen and a minibus driver were shot dead. Despite the injuries to the Sri Lankan players, the team appears to have had an almost miraculous escape. The shocked players told how the attackers fired a rocket-propelled grenade at the bus, but missed. '

OT: From the previous thread about protests:

The only Republicans who know how to organize a protest are the Cubans in Miami. They can get 200,000 people out on the streets within 24 hours to protest Castro. During the 2000 election contest, they did better than that. There was this wonderful TV shot of Al Sharpton getting off the plane in Miami, with thousands of Cuban-Republican protesters screaming for Bush around him. He turned to then N.Y. Governor George Pataki, and nervously said, "Is it safe here?" Pataki replied with a smirk, "You'll be all right, Reverend."

A classic moment in American politics.

MPACUK blames America....
Is Pakistan Descending into Civil War Thanks To American Foreign Policy?

Many Pakistanis you speak to say that Pakistan is suffering because of America’s neo-conservative inspired war in Afghanistan. The extreme foreign policy is leading to a backlash where many Muslims are now taking up extreme measures themselves, the latest of which is the attack against the Sri Lankan team playing in Pakistan.

It was a message to Pakistan’s Government who has backed American policy, without which it would be a bankrupt failed state – that doing so would cost them dearly.

Is it time American Muslims got political and push for a change in policy, which would bring stability to the region instead of war and the inevitable reaction to it?

Another Jihadist attack on a "decadent" remnant of Western Culture. It is time for the left to wake up and realize this has little to do with American, and everything to do with the West as a whole. Cricket is not exactly an "American" Sport. The Jihadists want to send Pakistan backwards to a Mediaeval Islamic state, one with nukes, by forcing all modernity to cower before its violent rage. From a CTV news article:

Schifrin said cricket is the only thing in the region that unites people.

"When, in 2004, Pakistan and India needed a thaw in their relations they didn't turn to some diplomat, they turned to cricket and that actually helped for years the relationship between these two countries," he said.

In London, International Cricket Council President David Morgan said his organization had no role in allowing the Sri Lankan team to travel to Pakistan because both sides had agreed to the match.

Morgan said hopefully cricket teams will be able to go to Pakistan in the future.

"We must not believe that Pakistan is going to remain unsafe for ever and ever and we must hope that it will not remain unsafe for too long," Morgan told reporters Tuesday.

Actually I believe Colonel Gaddaffi attended Sandhurst, the British Military Academy. Years ago, an Englishman claiming to have been with the SAS told me in a bar that Gaddaffi was so incensed at having been snubbed by the British Royal family for an invitation to a royal wedding that he dispatched a team of Libyan assassins to dispatch the royal family. The SAS, he said, had to manage the threat, which they did successfully.

Here come the conspiracy theories.....
Pakistan Blames India for Cricket Attack

A Pakistani minister blamed arch-rival India for a brazen attack on a visiting Sri Lankan cricket team in the northeastern city of Lahore on Tuesday, March 3, that killed seven people and wounding others, including five players.

"This is an attack on Pakistan," Federal Minister for Ports and Shipping Nabeel Gabol told IslamOnline.net.

"There is no doubt about Indian involvement in this terrorist attack."

According to eyewitnesses and police, twelve militants carrying heavy weapons, including rocket launchers, attacked the convoy near the Gaddafi stadium.
....
"The weapons and rocket launchers used in the attack are Indian made," said Minister Gabol.

"Indian media and politicians have been demanding for targeting Pakistan in retaliation of Mumbai attacks. And today, they have targeted us," added the minister.

"We will not take it lightly. Every option and forum will be used to expose India."

Pres. Obama's comment regarding the stock market just illustrates how completely illiterate in economics the man is. For excellent coverage from people within the game, go here:

[Link: www.cricinfo.com...]

This is huge in its ramifications. It's often said that the real national religion of India or Pakistan isn't Hinduism or Islam, but cricket. The common view from cricketers and fans and not a few security experts of all backgrounds was that the Taliban/Al Qaeda would attack anything else, but leave cricket alone, such is the game's importance throughout the British Commonwealth. This was certainly the view of Imran Khan, former Pakistan Captain and one of the greatest players to ever grace a cricket field.

Even worse, the Sri Lankans are being punished for their bravery: when other teams (including Australia) refused to tour Pakistan citing security concerns, the Sri Lankans would often go in their stead. It is staggering. It is cricket's Munich.

Got an answer to that caption? Read to me like they either glossed over muslim violence or glorified it. Am I off base?

i read somewhere that the screen play was changed to make the lead characters moslem but in the book the people were of no particular religion.
religion was not material to the story line. but putting moslems in important
sympathetic likable roles certainly put a favorable spin on them.
we seldom get a negative role for a moslems,
tho i think "taken" is less pc than what usually comes out of hollywood.

I wonder if Obama and his team have even discussed the possibility of another terror attack in the US. It would seem like a good time to strike us. Get us while were down. You think the economy couldn't get any worse. Imagine what a large scale attack could do. Is the war on terrorism still on or did that end with Bush. No, there is more to it than that. This was a serious operation by serious people. There is a long term goal. It has been suggested that the goal is to heighten tensions between India and Pakistan. OK, to what end? There are peices here that do not fit.

Perhaps they see an Indian/Pakistani war as the first push to a global Jihad. Maybe. It really just doesn't add up though. Both nations are nuclear. Perhaps they feel that if Pakistan is going to launch and get obliterated by India, they will launch at Israel too? Perhaps they feel that an atomic exchange between India and Pakistan will galvanise bomb making in the rest of the Muslim world?

Perhaps they thought the cricketers were Chabad?

It does not add up.

I mean, what does any terro group have to gain from hitting the Shri-Lanka cricket team? Is the goal to shut down tourism? Is the the goal to make certain that the people of Shri Lanka don't feel "left out" from global jihad?

What is the point?

I think the terrorists were working at and trying to kill the Indian cricket team, which apparently pulled out and the Sri Lankans stood in for them.

Killing Indians is what Pakistani muslims want - there is the whole mess of Kashmir, for a start ...

A little while ago his spokesman both disavowed that meaning and attack Wall Street which put a damper on an 80 point rally that was in progress.

Update: Obama denies offering Russia missile shield deal

"The report that was in The New York Times didn't accurately characterize the letter," Obama said after meeting British Prime Minister Gordon Brown for talks at the White House.

"What I said in the letter is what I have said publicly, which is that the missile defence that we have talked about deploying is directed towards, not Russia, but Iran," he said.

"And what I said ... was that, obviously, to the extent that we are lessening Iran's commitment to nuclear weapons, then that reduces the pressure for, or the need for a missile defence system."

Another terrorist attack in the U.S. would play right into Obama's hands. It would be excuse to suspend civil liberties, shut down Limbaugh and other critics, and impose marshal law. Place intrusive technology in every home in the name of national security. And this time it would be permanent, with the lefty lawyers defending it. Permanent warfare in a totalitarian economy. It just occurred to me that of all the Socialists of all time, Obama scored the biggest ass Treasury to rob of any of them. Hall of Fame.

And he doubled dipped on spending.

He has the regular yearly budget PLUS he got to spend a trillion or so more on the "stimulus" package, where the money went to programs that have nothing to do with stimulating an economy.

393 BeerDrinking_VictoryMonkey  Tue, Mar 3, 2009 12:56:18pm

Will Obama kill Motley Crue?

For those of you unaware: the typical Crue show includes lots of flashy pyrotechnics. To say that Crue shows have a heavy carbon footprint would be the understatement of the century. How would a cap and trade regime effect such a performance?

There are two possibilities:

1) Crue shows become more expensive. Under a cap and trade regime between the pyrotechnics, the giant Marshall stacks, and the private plane travel between gigs, they would almost certainly be over any CAP that government busybodies might assign them. That will, of course, force them to TRADE for the right to emit more carbon. In order to trade for the carbon, they'll have to pay money for it. How will they make up for the money they have to pay? They will RAISE PRICES on tickets and merch. By definition, higher prices will mean that fewer people will be able to afford to see them. In a worst-case scenario, they might decide that touring is prohibitively expensive and stay home and bang strippers instead.

Just to clarify my comment upthread--with thanks to those who provided links--I didn't mean that a list of Muslim terrorist acts day by day should exist.

I mean that among all the date books--with puppies and kittens and manatees and elephants and Great Historical Moments and whatnot--that are sold for people to use as day-planners, there should be one which is the Muslim Terrorist Date Book, that has notations for the terror acts that have occurred each day over the last ten, fifteen, twenty years.

It might not be a big seller, but I think it would be handy for people to have a day planner that notes that "on this date, X number of terrorist acts were committed, with the following number killed."

Most people have no clue as to how large or widespread the problem is. It would be worth losing money on such an enterprise if some few additional Staples browsers were to get a clue as to what's going on.

Excellent idea!

The only remaining question is: is Obama feckless, or is he destroying the private sector deliberately? He's a very smart, so it's difficult to believe that it's youth and inexperience. And his attack on charitable deductions for wealthy people, which will hurt churches and synagogues most, as well as other private charities, seems very calculated.

IMHO it is deliberate. He wants to destroy capitalism and put us on our knees so we 'have' to suckle at the teat of socialism. Since there is resistance for his agenda, he must eliminate the 'middle class' because the middle class with money is a threat to his plans for Socialism. If he can destroy our investments and drive us towards bankruptcy, it will be easier to foist his massive government program funded by whatever actual taxpayers are left.

The SOB keeps stating how he wants to 'change' America as he feels it should be.

US: 'Inescapable' movement to Palestinian state

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton promised Tuesday to work with the incoming Israeli government, but delivered a clear message that could put her at odds with the country's next leader: Movement toward the establishment of a Palestinian state is "inescapable."

Clinton also said the U.S. would soon send two envoys to Syria. It was the most significant sign yet that the Obama administration is ready to mend relations with the Damascus regime. The U.S. withdrew its ambassador in 2005, accusing Syria of supporting terrorism.

Oh, it's "Israel Apartheid Week". I wanted to go and see what the fuss was about. I spent most of my time in the lobby because I lined up too late (although I was at the front of the line when they continued to let people in). (Part of the subway line was shut down while I was making my way there, so I had to take the streetcar. I'm usually early for everything.)

There were some people outside with Israeli flags and some inside with flyers. I helped a friend hand out some of her homemade flyers inside.

I was told later that Naomi Klein (Mrs. Al-Jazeera Canada) was one of the guest speakers. Apparently, she said something like, The way to honour the victims of the Holocaust is to oppose Israel.

You are correct. The rationale behind the attack is not about revenge, it is about fundamental islamists getting the message across that Cricket, as a sport, will not be tolerated in a sharia compliant Pakistan. Sri Lanka is a soft option with little chance of retribution from the Sri Lankans. However, the immediate impact is evident. New Zealand was due to tour there (Pakistan) at the end of this year. There has been an immediate cancellation of the tour. There is now talk that the co-hosting rights between India and Pakistan will be reviewed with Pakistan removed and replaced by Sri Lanka and bangladesh. All this is what islamists want. The removal of any infidel influence from their midst, that includes sport.

re: #454 karmic_inquisitor

So Democrats used to complain that George Bush was incapable of admitting he was wrong.

I wonder if there are any Democrats or similarly minded Republicans willing to admit that they were wrong - that Obama is a leftist and not a moderate and that he has no intention to do anything other than walk the economy into a hole so he can consolidate a leftist welfare state.

That is what he is doing.

Obama threw everybody off by openly stating his leftist views. Nobody expected that. What a fiendishly cunning bastard.

The Senator would be out of office the next election cycle for going after him.

Au contrere mon frere. Look at the lunatics still in our Senate and Congress after an election cycle. They've been trying to push war crimes trials, impeachment, calling our military terrorists in the dark of night, cold-blooded killers, etc. etc.

And yet they remain.

re: #437 Alouette

This is just bullshit. The Palis could have had a "state" by declaring one back in 1995 when they had the first Oslo meetings. Their state would have been recognized by the U.N. and more nations than currently recognize Israel.

But they have never declared a state. Why? Because they don't want their own fucking state, they want Israel.

Oslo was signed in 1993. They could have had their state at any point after that, including especially 2000 when Barak gave Arafat pretty much everything except right of return.

Arafat refused. The PA will never accept a 2-state solution unless they get Israel to concede on the right of return - and even Meretz would not accept that since it would mean the end of Israel as we know it. The PA has never fulfilled its obligations under Oslo, including eliminating incitement to violence against Israel and propagandizing against Jews. Both continue unabated.

As you say, they don't want their own state - they want what Israel has. They want Israel itself and there are plenty in the media who are sympathetic to that cause, history, facts, logic, and Jewish rights to the same land be damned.

I do not read anything about Jesus Christ, nor His atoning work on the Cross. Take out #1 and you have any number of ethnic/racial self-help groups.

a) He knows that he'll be safer there, even if his neighbors detest him, than in the community that idolizes him;

b) He can feed his hate-whitey addiction much easier by living in a white community. Keepin' it fresh, so to speak.

Maybe he is just on a recon behind enemy lines.

It's the last safe stereotype. My first thought when the VP had a southern accent was that he will be portrayed as stupid, or corrupt.

Or a racist

Alright someone has to say it, does anyone else find it odd that a former koranic student from Indonesia (BHO) & a former member of the Nation of Islam (Wright) find themselve's in the same Christian Chuirch?

And I will have to make the appropriate edit (leaving the "i" in the church seems appropriate as well)

I presume two things at this juncture when nothing is clear on the ground. I strongly believe that Cricket is not ‘Unislamic’ as this popular sport has nothing to do with any religion. But it could be a reason for Pro-Taliban and Qaeda elements to claim or reinterpret that this is against Islamic tenets, as it is covered by television channels and for the glamour and vulgarity attached to the game.

My thoughts exactly.

So, Obama's policy of getting along with the rest of the world is working really well, it would seem! Yep, the new Smart Power is the way to go. Yeah, thank goodness that Bush's nasty policy of waging GWOT is history now, we can relax from our stressful war jitters.

Now, is mid-town Manhattan ready for its introduction to the real world application of Smart Power?

The Sri Lankans came to play cricket and soon showed that they are a good ,possibly great side(several talented new players) to accompany old established stars.(they clocked up a record score in the first test.
Cricket as well as being a game is an axiom for fair play.
The jihadis have sullied the essence of a cricket tour by attempting to murder the opposition by a cowardly attack upon innocent sportsmen with RPGs and automatic weapons.
Even some muslim dogmatists are cricket fans and will not be happy with this
extreme example of bad sportsmanship.
I can't see any test matches or one day matches taking place in Pakiland for
many years to come and the exclusion will serve to isolate the deranged jihadi element.
Madmen have murdered many innocents in Pak and now they've murdered
the game they love.

All this blame the US stuff...

it actually makes me think that part of the knee jerk liberal anti-US stuff form liberal US folks comes from the nihilism of the US left... being that they consider themselves the center of the universe... and being the all powerful center of the universe all the ills of the world must be their responsibility... couldn't possibly be that other parts o the world don't revolve around the US because then they'd have less stature and have to come to grips with not being the center of the universe and all...
just a thought...

BTW, cricket is HUGE in Pakistan, Bangladesh, India ... I have coworkers from all three countries that stay up really late for the important matches.

Huge barely describes it. Cricketers there are held up as minor gods... quite literally.

To us this seems like an attack on one bus, but to India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, this is ginormous.

Because it needs repeating every so often, and because the essense of a man may not be in the the job he chooses, the place he lives, or the hobbies he pursues in his free time, but it is most certainly in the religion he chooses to follow, the TUCC values:

1. Commitment to God

2. Commitment to the Black Community

3. Commitment to the Black Family

4. Dedication to the Pursuit of Education

5. Dedication to the Pursuit of Excellence

7. Commitment to Self-Discipline and Self-Respect

8. Disavowal of the Pursuit of "Middleclassness"

9. Pledge to make the fruits of all developing and acquired skills available to the Black Community

10. Pledge to Allocate Regularly, a Portion of Personal Resources for Strengthening and Supporting Black Institutions

11. Pledge allegiance to all Black leadership who espouse and embrace the Black Value System
