Official: Obama’s half-brother falls ill in Kenya
KISUMU, Kenya — A Kenyan health official says President Barack Obama’s older half-brother has been hospitalized with stomach pains and is being tested for cholera.Local disease surveillance officer James Sande says that Malik Obama, a 51-year-old businessman, was taken to Siaya District Hospital in western Kenya on Tuesday evening. Sande says Obama’s condition is improving enough for him to be discharged Thursday or Friday. Results of his cholera test have not come back.

From ‘Brooklyn” on the cartoon thread:
I wrote this email msg to the NY Times’ Public Editor:
I read a report that you published this cartoon:Oliphant cartoon inserted here
All I can say is, this is a level of antisemitism that I expect to see in the Arab media, or in historical representations of Nazi propaganda. That you would publish something like this appalls me. This is beyond the pale.
If I subscribed to your paper, I’d be terminating my subscription right now. I occasionally look at articles on your web site. From now on, I’ll be doing it with AdBlock turned on.
I got back a quick reply:
Thank you for your email. I am sorry you were offended by the Oliphant cartoon, The Times received many similar comments. Please read the explanation from Craig Whitney, the Assistant Managing Editor at The Times:
Catherine - The offending cartoon by Oliphant will not be published in The New York Times. It did not appear on our Website yesterday, either. What does appear there, by contract with uclick.com, is an “Oliphant” button on the cartoons page that, yesterday, got those who clicked on it to that cartoon, which is now relegated to the Oliphant archive.
The contract dates back years and the Achilles heel in the arrangement is that we do not review the feed editorially. Nobody at The Times, therefore, made any decision yesterday to “publish” the cartoon. But, though the click gets you to a uclick.com page, the banner on the page says “The New York Times …..Cartoons.”
We will review our procedures and arrangements, and I don’t know what you want to say about this to all the queriers, but this is the arrangement. I haven’t had time to go back to see if I can find who negotiated it and what the chances of revising it are.
best
CraigI hope this helps explain the Times’ role in your being exposed to the offending cartoon, and The Times’ position on its content.
Sincerely,
Scott Garapolo
Office of the Public Editor
The New York TimesNote: The public editor’s opinions are his own and do not represent those of The New York Times.
I went to the NY Times web site, and it seems that his description of how you would get to Oliphant’s antisemitic cartoon via the NY Times web site is correct.
It may have been more a case of inadvertent incompetence than anti-Jewish malice. But they still deserve to get hammered, and I hope everyone here sends them an email: public@nytimes.com is the address.

Most of my travel recently is to NYC, and Amtrak is much better than taking the plane. You actually have legroom, and can get something done.
The flight has about 10 minutes of time when you can take things out of your bags; the rest is climbing or descending, or taxiing.

There are already housing developments near DIA, BTW. I guess the developers figure if they build a new airport way out of town, it’s their duty to bring the town closer to it.

Where is Mandy? Our boy Jake was on the job again today.
Today’s Qs for O’s WH - 3/26/2009
TAPPER: There were a couple questions that were on your website that were not asked (at the virtual town hall meeting) that I thought were interesting, that — I wanted to just get an answer from you here, since they weren’t the top vote-getters. One was from Jason in Detroit. He said, “Will we ever see any CEOs go to jail for destroying the economy?” I think that’s a question probably a lot of voters wonder about. And then I have one more after that.GIBBS: Right. I do believe — I’d have to look up exactly who, but I think there are executives that were part of accounting scandals that are currently serving time in jail, and I know that —
TAPPER: You’re talking about Arthur Andersen? Or you’re —
GIBBS: I think — I don’t know if Ken Lay ever went to jail or died before he got there. But I know that executives have been convicted of fraud in the past. And the president and the Justice Department are concerned about financial fraud and have invested resources to ensure that fraud is rooted out, caught — and that people that conduct it are put in jail.
TAPPER: Okay. And just one more, if you’ll indulge me. This is —
GIBBS: Mm-hmm. Sure.
TAPPER — from Peter in Oregon. He said, “I appreciate the efforts of the administration to fix the economy quickly. However, why aren’t you giving the American public the chance to review these bills? In your campaign, you promised we would have at least five days.”
GIBBS: I believe, except for the stimulus bill — I’ll double-check on this —
TAPPER: Don’t — I don’t think you’ve been doing it. I might be wrong, but I don’t —
GIBBS: I’ll check. I think a number of the bills have been up for five days. I’ll get exactly — I think, in fact, a — on at least a couple of occasions, we’ve not signed bills when we would normally plan to, so that some of them could be reviewed.
TAPPER: So that is a commitment the president intends to uphold —
GIBBS: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. (Affirmative.)
MMMMMM HMMMMMMM?
That’s an answer from the WH Press Secretary?

I’m trying to think of an airport that doesn’t suck.
Albuquerque comes about the closest to that of any I’ve every been in. Easy to get in and out of. Security moves quickly. Good New Mexican food and margaritas at the Garduno’s in the terminal. Plenty of room, too, at the restaurants, you’re not crammed in elbow to elbow like you are in every other terminal I’ve been in. Great model airplane display of aviation history of Albuquerque and Holloman AFB.
No weird New World Order art on the walls and constant enviro propaganda on screens like in Denver. That place gives me the creeps.

Best US Airports
SNA, Orange County, CA, like being in an empty shopping mall
CLD, Carlsbad, CA (free parking, and itty bitty small)
PHX, Phoenix (for the size, its nice)
MKE, Milwaukee (cheap beer, close parking, easy women)
Worst US Airports
JFK, NY pure hell
LAX, Los Angeles, customs officials are bastards
PHL, Like walking through someone’s colon
SFO, San Fran (morning flight? fraid’ not, fogged in)
Best Foreign
AMS, Amsterdam, efficient, clean
KEF, Keflavik Iceland, only place where you can get cheap liquor
MLA, Malta (its Malta, how tough can it be?)
HKT, Phuket runway about 50 feet from beach, fun to sunbathe
Worst Foreign
CAI Cairo, just awful so awful
DAD, Danang Vietnam, its our former air base, crumbling and full of French
IST, Istanbul, I watched Midnight Express a few too many times
LED St. Petersburg, warned on landing not to photograph airport, don’t want to steal any of that 1962 Soviet technology

Vegas…I was there once when an Elvis convention was in town, a full plane of Newark Elvi…very scary. I hate LAS airport, used to have to connect there many times, late at night. Everyone smokes, and the machines go non stop.
Orlando, nice airport, no complaints.
I left off some other terrible airports. Lima Peru, in the middle of a terrible slum, run down, broken down hole of an airport.
All Mexican airports (CUN, CZM, MEX, GYM, SJD, MZT, HMO, PVR, GDL), they all have that same utilitarian look, same crappy lack of shopping and lack of air circulation.

Rush gets the last laugh
Will the White House ever learn its lesson?
A combination of several powerful forces has resulted in explosive talk radio ratings growth, with indications of much more to come in the months ahead.
Primary factor driving the upward move? You guessed it: Rush Limbaugh. That’s in contrast to declining support for Rush’s arch-rival Obama.
With Limbaugh at the top of his game, including a more deeply loyal audience than ever, the numbers were expected to be strong. The beginning of the Obamist era, combined with a direct White House campaign targeting the talk titan, however, provided rocket fuel for El Rushbo’s ratings. Even to seasoned industry veterans, this data should prove stunning.

My step-father fell in love with Chicago - he’s a foodie.
Greek Town! The Parthenon is the best, it is actually the place that did the first flaming Saganaki. Opah!

ha… I love the Poconos…Philly is just a town compared with Chicago
I agree with all of that & I have lived in both cities.

You know, I’ve seen every episode so far, and I’m still not sure. That’s why I was hoping you’d been watching it.
It’s definitely different…
And what did Eliza Dushku do to her face? I must not have noticed. Or d you mean Amy Ackerman, whose character has several scars on her face?
No, Eliza Dushku had some sort of plastic surgery a few years ago. Possibly cheek implants. Her nose looks slightly off-center, too.

I will try to watch “Dollhouse” tomorrow night and let you know what I think.

Okay, late to the thread, but I had to say this…
Have you been to the Jane Austen railroad terminal? It’s lovely, with flower gardens and tea shops but they can’t get the women to leave.

Oh. Hmm…I actually hadn’t noticed.
Anyway…I wouldn’t recommend watching tomorrow night without seeing the previous episodes first. You’ll be lost.
They actually have all the episodes on the Fox website, where you can watch them on demand.

How did I miss this?
Back in Boston, Obama’s aunt fighting deportation
President Barack Obama’s aunt, a Kenyan immigrant who ignited controversy last year for living in the United States illegally, has returned to her quiet apartment in a Boston public housing project to prepare for an April 1 deportation hearing that will be closed to the public.
More transparency.
(Sorry if it’s a repeat)

Thanks. I’ll try an early episode. I do know the premise, at least.

Hmm, according to this deportation hearings can only be closed for national security reasons. Wonder what the national security reason is here?

One thing that I found annoying was the fact that in each of the first four episodes, something goes wrong with the “implant” used on Echo for that particular episode’s mission, yet they keep sending her out.
I kept thinking, “Wow…these clients sure do spend a lot of money on some fairly crappy service…”
Sort of reminded me of a thought I had while watching Star Trek:TNG the other night, which was that I would have resigned from Starfleet a long time ago if I came that close to dying every single week.

The fact that it would be embarassing for the public to see an immigration judge basically told to shut up and sign the papers allowing Obama’s aun to stay here indefinitely?

LOL. Sounds like over-reliance on a particular plot device. I love “House,” but I get sooo tired of two of the team, usually two that are having romantic tension and/or conflict, being sent to the patient’s house to search for toxins.

Someone may have pointed it out to them, because now they’re having other “actives” have problems, instead.

I flew through Prague twice.
The first time was the day before 9/11:
I was a little concerned going to Eastern Europe without language skills and was pleasantly surprised. Hassle free, one guard at customs smoking a cigarette glanced at my passport and partially lifted his head and then let us be on our way.
Flying back (about 10 days later)was completely different story:
Armed Guards everywhere, people yelling at you in a threatening manor, all luggage dumped out and throughly inspected, everything short of a cavity search. What a difference those terrorists made.
Jerks! (Terrorists that is).
Czech Republic has the Best Beer on the Planet! IMHO

Best hot dogs?
Sauerkraut, long thin slice of dill pickle, and spicy mustard… from Hot Dog Johnny’s at the Delaware Watergap in NW New Jersey.
… with a cool glass of buttermilk! Mmmmm!
… or better yet, an ice cold rootbeer, made on site, served from a wooden keg!
