Germany Boycotts Durban II

World • Views: 2,487

This is great to watch, as country after country refuses to take part in the United Nations’ hatefest masquerading as an “anti-racism” conference: Germany joins boycotters of UN racism meeting.

BERLIN (AP) — Germany’s government says the country will boycott this week’s U.N. racism conference out of concern that it could be “abused as a platform for other interests.”

Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said Sunday that he made the decision after consulting with other European Union nations, and he urged those attending the conference to “stand up for the effective fight against racism and ethnic discrimination.”

Germany joined the United States, Netherlands, Australia, Canada, Israel and Italy in boycotting the conference out of concern that it could be used by Muslim countries to criticize Israel and to limit free speech when it comes to criticizing their religion.

However, when it comes to the United States participating in the World Conference against Racism scheduled for April 20-24 in Geneva, Switzerland (known to some as Durban II because the first such conference was held in Durban, South Africa, in 2001), Obama may be following in Bush's footsteps. The 2001 event was boycotted by Bush, who informed then-Secretary of State Colin Powell that the United States would not participate in programs sponsored by the United Nations. The 2009 event will not be attended by an American contingent because it unfairly equates Zionism with racism.

April 17, 2008

The Bush Administration has justifiably expressed its opposition to the 2009 Durban Review Conference, commonly referred to as Durban II.

However, some are critical of the Obama Administration's decision not to attend:

"It is an embarrassment for the Obama administration to continue the Bush administration's practice of refusing dialogues with others," said Ramsey Clark...
...Clark and other human rights activists believe that racism must be seen as an institutionalised system of oppression and exploitation that is reinforced by a complex and pervasive system of beliefs, policies, and laws, which are also prevalent in the United States and Israel.

There was a bit of a dance over this a month or two ago when we sent some folks over for a pre-conference meeting of some sort. But I don't condemn the administration for trying to find common ground for discussion, as long as they figure out the right answer in time, and it appears they have. Glad to see it.

I mentioned blogs specifically. Grandma Jones in Lawrence KS who has never touched a computer is not who I'm talking about. But I bet if you asked her, she would have a neutral to positive opinion about Pat Buchanan and Jerome Corsi. (IMO)

As for the those in the internet age...

Ask any of them who get their news from the internet what they think of WND. I bet it will be majority positive. (also IMO)

Connections from WND to anti-israeli kookery are legion.

Ask any of them who read blogs what they think of Jihad Watch, I bet you will get a positive reaction to that question 99 times out of 100. (Again IMO)

Connections for JW to Eurofascists has been documented ad nauseam here.

This is a problem we need to deal with. Anyone with half a brain in the FCBBHO administration could crawl the web for about a half hour and have enough damning material for the 2012 campaign as it is now.

To Charles and to all.

This is not --historically--a unique phenomenon. The party has no identifiable leader, no defined core. It is in a state of flux the likes of which I have not seen in my life. This sort of attitude is to be expected--not tolerated-but it is not surprising.

All the factions of the GOP now see a chance to grab the tiller (sorry to keep using Iowahawk's nautical metaphors) and this kind on in-fighting will continue until a leader steps forward, or, at the very least, the GOP finds its voice and starts to deliver a clear message. Until that time, the mutiny will continue until the less-acceptable factions are forced back down to steerage--if not heaved overboard all together.

It will take some time.

Can Switzerland boycott?

They are not going to.

"Schweiz dabei - Switzerland takes part"
"Die Schweiz hingegen hat sich für eine Teilnahme entschlossen. Der am Freitagabend von der Vorbereitungskonferenz beschlossene Entwurf für ein Schlussdokument erfüllt die Bedingungen des Bundesrates."

Link is to a Swiss German language newspaper.
Basically says that the preparatory declaration from Friday evening fulfills the prerequisites asked for by the Swiss Federal Council.

The Swiss cowards go on further, their President has already met with achmadnsdtejklsdbh-creep who before leaving for the conference stated in Teheran: «Die zionistische Ideologie und das zionistische Regime sind die Fahnenträger des Rassismus» => «The zionist ideology and the zionist regime are the banner-bearers of rassism»
Yet the Swiss police have evicted Alan Dershowitz from the premises as he wanted to confront the achmadnsdtejklsdbh-creep. %-(

My people had a right to self-determination. The British kicked us out of Canada for it. More of my people had a right to self-determination. Mr. Lincoln and General Grant et al. thought otherwise.

You want the the right to self-determination, form a private club or an HOA.

Gordon Brown's and FM Miliband's decision to still attend this conference is disgusting. The scary thing is who knows if Cameron would even make a different decision if he were PM. At the Vatican, Pope Benedict XVI said the conference is needed to eliminate racial intolerance around the world. Asia News, a Catholic news agency that is part of the missionary arm of the Vatican, said of the pope's comment: "The Holy See is distancing itself from the criticisms of some Western countries."

re: #52 A Kiwi Infidel

According to the New Zealand Herald (and elsewhere) NZ will not attend Durban II.

123 DeerMusic  Sun, Apr 19, 2009 4:46:34pm

Durban II is shaping up to be a gathering of the leaders of countries whose antisemitic and anti-Israel positions and policies are well documented. It will be a hatefest where it is very unlikely that any dissenting voices will be heard. Nevertheless, it is extremely important for other countries’ leaders who see through this naked display of racism to register, by their absence, their disgust.

NZ is only a small country and I dont know if we even got an invite, but I hope that, if we did get invited, the new government have the cojones to turn it down.

BTW, what on earth was it with all the exploding heads earlier on?

kiwi -

Bet your government is like that of the UK. All 'y'all WILL send ambassadors to "observe." Unfortunately, all y'all are NOT Australia, even under Rudd - pronounced "Rude." "Rude" is the Bill Clinton of Australia - AND - like Bill Clinton, at times he remembers WHICH nation is his. Haven't seen the same from NZ. Lost an Uncle in the 1940's Pacific Unpleasantness.
All 'y'all in NZ have allowed yourselves to be disconnected form the "Anglosphere" lately. Really too bad, your islands are a South Pacific paradise. Your Government is akin to the Isolationist Movement in the US in the 1930's. A Kiwi Bird that buries it's head in the sand when the going gets tough. This is NOT a criticism of you. Probably, you are on the "other side." I want NZ back in "the fold." That is all.

129 Achilles Tang  Sun, Apr 19, 2009 5:27:15pm

Strange or just stupid?

130 Timbre  Sun, Apr 19, 2009 5:52:32pm

Has Denmark joined the boycott? I thought they'd be one of the early leaders.

131 Spartacus50  Sun, Apr 19, 2009 7:05:08pm

The only reason these other countries are now boycotting is that the U.S. did it first. It shows a profound lack of leadership on their part. They should have been out front in the beginning instead of following suit

132 der_ich  Mon, Apr 20, 2009 3:00:03am

The Spiegel-author Henryk M. Broder has an interesting take on this. My translation:

No reason to be grateful
So far we have come that we articulate our deep gratitude, when people do what they are paid, or have been elected for: the obvious. When a train driver appears on duty, when the postman brings the mail, when someone sits at the cashier at ALDI, when the doctor does not strike, when the garbage disposal truck picks up the garbage, or when Foreign Minister Steinmeier decides five minutes to High Noon, not participate in the Durban- 2-Conference. Then even critical minds come to be beside themselves with joy, and can hardly control themselves from all the gratitude. Danke, Frank-Walter, danke! Toda raba, thank you, merci, dziekuje, magna tak, spasiba, schukran!

No, we owe Frank-Walter Steinmeier no gratitude for his decision not to go to Geneva, as little as a driver who stops at a red light stop deserves our gratitude, or a teacher, that does not abuse his students. We don't owe thanks to non-anti-Semites for the fact that they have nothing against Jews, and no woman needs to be grateful to a man that does not rape her. Also a black African, who in grateful to a white African for not being a racist, would be a laughing stock. Only Jews have a conditional reflex, which always leads them to desire to say thank you, when for once they don't get their arse kicked. In another context, it is called a "deformation professionelle" where as with Jews, it is called the dhimmi reflex.

133 Land Shark  Mon, Apr 20, 2009 8:23:14am

While I'm obviously not a fan of the Obama administration, I give them Kudos for doing the right thing and boycotting this farce of a conference. And with a number of other Western countries joining in, I see some glimmers of hope against the plague creeping dhimmitude. Good news!

134 bombarafat  Mon, Apr 20, 2009 5:08:19pm

I'd like to say thank you to all the countries and individuals that walked out or snubbed it entirely.
