Good afternoon everyone!
I cannot help but wonder if Obama's team may want to slow down on this ridiculous prosecution mess. What they have done so far had so weakened and endangered us, that they may very well find themselves being prosecuted should the USA be attacked again. Not only are they setting a dangerous precedent for this nation, but, I think for themselves, should this tactic do harm to this country.

The soldier the taliban can't kill
Wow, this guy could be luckier than this soldier. The Sun
HERO Colour Sergeant Alan Dennis is the man the Taliban just can’t kill — after surviving being blown up for a SECOND time.
Two years ago the career soldier escaped from the wreckage of his Land Rover in a roadside bomb attack that claimed the life of a comrade.
Now he has cheated death again in Afghanistan following a grenade attack.
Once again miracle man Alan,35, was hurled into the air — landing under rubble in a trench.
But despite arm injures he recovered to return fire on the enemy and lead his men to safety.[...]
A rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) blew up in front of him sending him flying through the air and slamming him down into a trench buried under rubble.
Undeterred by what he thought was a broken arm, and under a constant hail of bullets, he grabbed his rifle and returned fire until his men were safe.

When I played with the Society for Creative Anachronism, I learned that someone redid that as "It's A New World After All".
Do NOT read this if you want to stop singing it any time soon.
'Twas in fourteen hundred and ninety-two
Chris Columbus sailed 'cross the ocean blue
Didn't find what he'd planned,
So he told Ferdinand
It's a New World after all!
It's a New World after all (3x)
It's a Brand New World!
So it isn't India - we won't get spice,
They have things there, King, that are just as nice!
There's a spring there, forsooth,
Called the Fountain of Youth!
In that New World, after all!
It's a New World after all,
And it's round just like a ball!
That Italian showed 'em all!
It's a Brave New World!
It's a world of treasure, a World to gain!
It's a world of riches, and all for Spain!
It'll be oh so fine
When the Pope draws the Line!
It's a New World after all!
It's a New World, after all,
Like an Eden ere the Fall,
We won't share with Portugal!
'Cause it's Spain's New World!
Oh, the Natives are friendly as they can be,
Gave us gifts of maize, and a little VD,
And the folk, not a one,
Heard of Lief Eriksson!
So it's Spain's world after all!
Go to Spain's world, one and all,
Get there if you have to crawl!
I hear El Dorado call,
There in Spain's New World!
Oh, the Aztecs and Mayans have lots of gold,
And the Incas have more, or so we've been told,
When those far western shores
Meet the Conquistadores,
Then it's Spain's world, after all!
When it's Spain's world, after all,
Then on England soon will fall
The Armada, strong and tall,
'Cause it's Spain's New World!

Afghanistan: Brits Unhappy With Certain Czech Unit
Headline reads
'Cowardly' troops refuse Afghan fight'
Apparently when asked by the Brits to fight terrorists, Czech troops refused.
When asked by the Britons to attack Afghan rebels, the commander of a special operations unit (SOG) said "we're not going to, it's dangerous,'' then ordered his men to get in trucks and return to the base.
On another occasion, an SOG commander decided that the task the Britons had set ran counter to the unit's mission.
Yet another time, a commander said he could not help as his soldiers were on vacation.
"I find it hard to recover from the news I get about this unit. It harms the reputation of the army,'' Czech Defence Minister Vlasta Parkanova told the daily.

I agree, in theory. In practice, however, the problem is determining when you've extracted all the information, and in discerning which information is real. Torture may work for some individuals; it doesn't work for all, though, and often produces volumes of information that matches what the tortured thinks the torturer wants to hear, rather than truth.
In short, torture just isn't that effective at getting that information. And once the torturer has convinced themselves that their charge is withholding, at what point does it become apparent that they're wrong, in the inevitable cases where a mistake has been made? Unfortunately, I'm not aware of any interrogation techniques that cannot produce false positives, or that are completely effective at producing positives.
Finally, why the exclusion for citizens? There is no shortage of examples of home-grown terrorists. If a technique works, why hesitate to use it over a matter like citizenship?

This may be proof that there is a divine being. Or something else, in your case?

Why mention black gangs? The story about the skinheads had nothing to do with black gangs.
To me they're just violent street gangs. Race doesn't enter into my mind when considering gangs.
Now I'm a racist based on another assumption on your part.
This is getting more vile, thanks.

Haven't been to too many 8 year olds birthday's have you. /
During the dot-com boom, a friend of mine hired her sister's boyfriend to work admin assistance for one of the big Silicon Valley firms. He was twenty-one, and the only work experience he had was being a dancing mouse for Chuck-E-Cheese. "Am I nuts?" she asked.
"One thing you know," I said, "he'll go the extra mile for any company he works for. If he'll be a dancing mouse for minimum wage, imagine what he would do for a place that gave him health benefits."

Nanny State Bloomberg is at it again. He's got his eco-left agenda, and it's a business killer.
The new laws would include:* A New York City Energy Code which existing buildings will have to meet whenever they make renovations.
* Buildings of 50,000 square feet or more would have to conduct an energy audit once every ten years and make any improvements that would pay for themselves within five years
* A jobs program to work with the real estate and construction industries and train the workforce that will fill the estimated 19,000 construction jobs the legislation will create.
* A financing program that uses $16 million in federal stimulus money to provide loans for property owners to pay the upfront costs for the efficiency upgrades that eventually pay for themselves.
Once again, Bloomberg is demanding that others spend their money to fit his agenda. The energy code provision would kill business because no one would go into a renovation project since it would expose them to additional costs that they would have to factor in. It would actually slow construction rehabs in the City - not accelerate them.

I hate reading stormfront and Ron Paul forums. Unfortunately they are involved with the Tea Parties so I've been keeping an eye on them. Alos many of the DHS memo, Fema camp stories that are so popular with conservatives these days originate from Stormfront and Paulians. These conspiracies appear there about a week before they make it to mainstream conservative sites. I'm just getting a preview.
Crazy Pamela ran a story from an "inside source" that the Tea Parties infiltrated by the FBI. Alex Jones was pushing that story last week.

Jock finds himself in dire trouble. His business has gone bust and he's in serious financial problems. He's so desperate that he decides to ask God for help. "God, please help me. Ah've lost ma wee store and if Ah dinna get some money, Ah'm going to lose my hoose too. Please let me win the lottery!"
Lottery night! Someone else wins... Jock prays again. "God, please let me win the lottery! Ah've lost my wee store, ma hoose and Ah'm going to lose ma car as weel!" Lottery night again! Still no luck.
Jock prays again: "Ah've lost ma business, ma hoose and ma car. Ma bairns are starving. Ah dinna often ask Ye for help and Ah have always been a good servant to Ye. PLEASE just let me win the lottery this one time so Ah can get back on ma feet!"
Suddenly there is a blinding flash as the heavens open and the voice of God Himself thunders: "Jock at least meet Me half way and buy a ticket!"

re: #72 SixDegrees
I am morally sure of my position. It has to do with being willing to do all one can reasonably do to protect thousands of innocent citizens - even at the risk of failure and even though it will cause suffering to another human being.

Read 507 in the last thread and let me know what I should think.
Honestly?
I think the squabbling is silly.
I think Killgore goes overboard sometimes with his points for the purpose of informing AND THEN ALSO for the purpose of stirring things up. Lots of discussion occurs, doesn't it? I think once I've "gotten" it, I can ignore his posts.
I think Killgore thinks differently than many of us here, and I think that after a discussion is done and everyone has put in their best possible $ .02, it is pointless to get into a squabble with him (or, anybody else) over things where no one is going to change their mind. Personally, I don't have that kind of time.
My .02.

You cannot be certain that any technique applied will produce truthful information.
You cannot be certain that the person being tortured has any useful information in the first place.
There have to be limits on how far to go and when to stop.
I'm morally sure of my position, as well.

Why does Obama smile at dictators?
Suppose Obama succeeds in building friendships with Chavez, Castro, Ahmadinejad and the Taliban. What then? Does America still get to feel that it stands for something? Will we still be the beacon of liberty and freedom to the rest of the world, or will we have sold out in the name of political expediency? And do any of us seriously believe that presidential friendship is going to get a megalomaniac like Hugo Chavez to ease up on the levers of power, or are we just feeding his ego by showing him he can be a tyrant and still have a beer with the president of the United States? Will the Iranians really stop enriching uranium through diplomacy rather than economic sanctions?

When you are weighing one enemy combatant's well-being (and keep in mind we are not talking about death) against the lives of thousands of your innocent fellow citizens, the test should in my view not be certainty, but rather reasonable and probable grounds.
And yes, the limits are that you will not kill, cripple, dismember or mutilate the person.

The image, posted on a Ron Paul supporter's site, depicted a bucket of money pouring through a funnel with a Star of David. The money transformed into a pool of blood in which a figure holding a Palestinian flag was drowning.
"Uncle Sam Reminds You: Keep Paying Taxes," the poster read in promoting an April 15 rally in San Mateo. "The ongoing extermination of Palestinian Children Can't be Done Without Your Help."
Ugh.

The poster was on the "Bay Area Ron Paul Campaign for Liberty" Web site but can no longer be viewed publicly. The site organizer, Kathy McGrade, told The Associated Press in an e-mail Wednesday that no offense was intended but that the image "represents a point made by many people before: U.S. financial aid for the Israeli government which comes from U.S. taxpayers, funds the harsh handling, and sadly, the death of innocent Palestinians."

1) Nuclear disarmament: Detonate all of our weapons in the eastern Pacific makes the pacifists happy we no longer have nukes.
2) Global warming: Nuclear winter from above thereby halting run away global warming.
3) Dramatic population reduction due to nuclear winter causing massive deaths from starvation.
