How Mrs. Sanford Found Out

Politics • Views: 2,571

One of the worst ways to learn about an affair is to find a love letter.

South Carolina first lady Jenny Sanford says she discovered her husband’s affair in January when she found a letter to the governor from his mistress.

Jenny Sanford told The Associated Press on Friday she told him to end the affair and was shocked this week when she found out he’d gone to Argentina to see his mistress. She says she believed Gov. Mark Sanford had gone somewhere to work on writing a book.

No -- the worst way is to come home early from work and hear strange sounds coming from the bedroom. Go upstairs, swing open the door, and OH. MY. GOD.

Finding a love letter is probably one of the better ways to get what is probably about the worst kind of news you can get.

At least she didn't lie about it to the media etc. while her husband was on the campaign trail - in order to, ya know, sell a book and be on Oprah.

But either way, it's terrible, and worse that it's in the public eye, so everyone knows what happened.

re: #79 Adrenalyn

not sure on xfer of power - but I'd assume that it goes without saying that if a gov is AWOL (copyright Ran Rather/Mary Mapes/CBS) then it would be automatic that the Lt fills in there can't possibly be an express written transfer, what if he went into a coma ?

but on the wallowing part.....
I politely disagree
the right needs to stand up to the left
and let them and America see how sleazy it all is

until WE as an electorate decide WE won't stand for it
from wither party

my two cents.....

In most states, if the governor physically leaves the state, he has to transfer power to the lt governor. Obviously, if the governor is incapacitated or something, that doesn't apply. The lt governor just takes over.

I haven't really been following the details, but it sounds as though the lt governor didn't even know he was out of state. In other words, nobody was in charge.

re: #53 doppelganglander

For all of his character flaws, and there are many, I don't see Obama as a philanderer. I also think his relationship with Michelle is not as warm as the women's magazines portray it. The man is just cold, IMO.

He is very cold. And, it adds to the curiosity that I have about his near-messianic status. I get Clinton and I get MLK and I even get Tony Blair (early Blair years). But, I just don't find Obama very engaging as a personality. He's distant, aloof, not very funny and never ever pokes fun of himself, ever.

And to be honest, I don't think he's the speaker that everyone makes him out to be. Sure, he much more than adequate, but he's not JFK, Reagan, Roosevelt or even Mario Coumo. He benefits greatly from being the guy who followed Bush, one of the worst speakers in the age of radio and television.

that's ok: him being a joke makes up for it...... he's a self-propelled punch line.

Fuck that! Not if I have anything to say about it. If I could have it my way, this person will be my next Gov.

Alas, I have but one vote.

wow, you have some imagination

I'd vote for this lady to be governor

yeah, but that's just the meaning of the words "in charge" as Bill Clinton would say

were there an emergency AND the gov did not appear
the Lt would take over

and you can bet the Dem's would justify it that way, is all I'm saying

Abraham Lincoln and others who put their country first at great personal cost, would disagree with your gross generalization.

I was referring to the modern environment. Abraham Lincoln wouldn't necessarily succeed in today's political climate. Neither party would support an up and coming nominee who was so honest he couldn't be counted on to toe the party line and vote with the bloc every time.

Friend Jesse W. Fell wrote: “If there were any traits of character that Stood out in bold relief, in the person of Mr. Lincoln, it was that of Truth, and Candor. He was utterly incapable of incincerity sic, or of professing views of this or any other Subjects, he did not entertain.”25 Congressman Isaac Arnold maintained that truth and integrity “were indeed the basis of his character”.26 Law partner William H. Herndon wrote: “In the grand review of his peculiar characteristics, nothing creates such an impressive effect as his love of the truth. It looms up over everything else. His life is proof of the assertion that he never yielded in his fundamental conception of truth to any man for any end.

Today's politics are geared to favor conniving scoundrels over people all wrapped up in truth and honesty.

No imagination necessary, Meg Whitman is running for Gov. of CA.

Yeah, the dems would justify it.

Be the legal authority is very real, if the Gov. didn't sign it over was just missing, then transfer of the authority either takes a court action or session of the legislature. It doesn't just happen cause he can't be found.

We're all still waiting for the news media to break the story about John Edwards' (D) affair - and the child that was produced.

He was too busy crying and feeling sorry for himself. But I do think there was a 'nude' theme in there somewhere.

105 nikis-knight  Fri, Jun 26, 2009 3:03:49pm

I don't mean to criticize Charles specifically, since all the media reports this stuff, but I wish we didn't have the kind of tabloid culture that made the details of politicans personal foibles public consumption. Tell us that he had an affair in another country, certainly, that reflects on his job.
Further details of what happened or how people feel about it? None of my business, except for those relating to actual job performance. (And yes, I'd extend that to the Star report)

What would possibly make you think that? Hillary should have locked them up, the problem is that she didn't.

He wanted to tango in Argentina, send him back. Yes, he should absolutely resign after his disappearance and dereliction of duty. A poll of SC's voters call for him to resign and their opinion matters.

This guy's a triple idiot:

1. Had an affair.
2. Had a rendezvous that created national noise about mysterious disappearance.
3. Left behind written evidence.

Genius, he's not.

Well, maybe he figured, "if I'm going to stop tip-toeing around the truth, I might as well REALLY FUCKING STOP TIP-TOEING."

Kinda like the heterosexual version of the guys who kick the closet door open and sashay out wearing leather chaps, a cockring, and a Carmen Miranda hat.

If he wasn't someone entrusted with executive government powers, I'd almost feel bad for the guy...he is clearly in love with the Argentine. But staking his political life on the Christian Right's gravy train, he deserves to be shunned as a hypocrite.

But this isn't like Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky or Eliot Spitzer and his hookers. Sanford actually loves this woman.
