Saturday Afternoon Music: Randy Newman, ‘The World Isn’t Fair’

Music • Views: 3,231

There’s an excellent version of this Randy Newman song on The Randy Newman Songbook, Vol. 1. The video is from his 2008 appearance with the BBC Concert Orchestra.

Youtube Video

When Karl Marx was a boy
he took a hard look around
He saw people were starving all over the place
while others were painting the town
The public spirited boy
became a public spirited man
So he worked very hard and he read everything
until he came up with a plan

There’ll be no exploitation
of the worker or his kin
No discrimination ‘cause of the color of your skin
No more private property
It would not be allowed
No one could rise too high
No one could sink too low
or go under completely like some we all know

If Marx were living today
he’d be rolling around in his grave
And if I had him here in my mansion on the hill
I’d tell him a story t’would give his old heart a chill

It’s something that happened to me
I’d say, Karl I recently stumbled
into a new family
with two little children in school
where all little children should be
I went to the orientation
All the young mommies were there
Karl, you never have seen such a glorious sight
as these beautiful women arrayed for the night
just like countesses, empresses, movie stars and queens
And they’d come there with men much like me
Froggish men, unpleasant to see
Were you to kiss one, Karl
Nary a prince would there be

Oh Karl the world isn’t fair
It isn’t and never will be
They tried out your plan
It brought misery instead
If you’d seen how they worked it
you’d be glad you were dead
just like I’m glad I’m living in the land of the free
where the rich just get richer
and the poor you don’t ever have to see
It would depress us, Karl
Because we care
that the world still isn’t fair

Only fair on Thursdays. Unless today is Thursday. Then next Thursday is fair.

At least, that's what I've always told my kids.

Not a bad song. Excellent rebuttal to Karl Marx though.

The "moderates"
Fatah: Return J'lem before talks go on

The sixth Fatah General Assembly decreed on Saturday that the return of both east and west Jerusalem to Palestinian control was a "red line" which was non-negotiable, and would need to be fulfilled before any peace talks with Israel could renew, Israel Radio reported.

According to the report, a document adopted by the Fatah delegates of the assembly declared that Palestinians would "continue to be sacrificed until residents of Jerusalem are free of settlements and settlers." The document went on to state that all of Jerusalem, including the surrounding villages, belonged to the Palestinians, and lands conquered following the Six Day War shared the same status as those located within the Green Line.

They keep increasing their demands. What are they hearing from the Barack Huseein Obama administration that is giving them the idea that this will work?
And as for the part about sacrificing Palestinians, my thoughts must remain deleted, lest I incur Stinky's wrath.

Here's my dilemma...While I am certainly not glad my back hurts, but I am very glad I do not have to use the pressure washer today.

Industrial Disease by M. Knopfler

Warning lights are flashing down at quality control
Somebody threw a spanner and they threw him in the hole
Theres rumors in the loading bay and anger in the town
Somebody blew the whistle and the walls came down
Theres a meeting in the boardroom theyre trying to trace the smell
Theres leaking in the washroom theres a sneak in personnel
Somewhere in the corridors someone was heard to sneeze
goodness me could this be industrial disease?

The caretaker was crucified for sleeping at his post
Theyre refusing to be pacified its him they blame the most
The watchdogs got rabies the foremans got fleas
And everyones concerned about industrial disease
Theres panic on the switchboard tongues are ties in knots
Some come out in sympathy some come out in spots
Some blame the management some the employees
And everybody knows its the industrial disease

The work force is disgusted downs tools and walks
Innocence is injured experience just talks
Everyone seeks damages and everyone agrees
That these are classic symptoms of a monetary squeeze
On itv and bbc they talk about the curse
Philosophy is useless theology is worse
History boils over theres an economics freeze
Sociologists invent words that mean industrial disease

Doctor parkinson declared Im not surprised to see you here
Youve got smokers cough from smoking, brewers droop from drinking beer
I dont know how you came to get the betty davis knees
But worst of all young man youve got industrial disease
He wrote me a prescription he said you are depressed
But Im glad you came to see me to get this off your chest
Come back and see me later - next patient please
Send in another victim of industrial disease

I go down to speakers corner Im thunderstruck
They got free speech, tourists, police in trucks
Two men say theyre jesus one of them must be wrong
Theres a protest singer singing a protest song - he says
they wanna have a war to keep us on our knees
They wanna have a war to keep their factories
They wanna have a war to stop us buying japanese
They wanna have a war to stop industrial disease
Theyre pointing out the enemy to keep you deaf and blind
They wanna sap your energy incarcerate your mind
They give you rule brittania, gassy beer, page three
Two weeks in espana and sunday striptease
Meanwhile the first jesus says Id cure it soon
Abolish monday mornings and friday afternoons
The other ones on a hunger strike hes dying by degrees
How come jesus gets industrial disease

The Israelis haven't been making many offers recently; good for Netanyahu.
Although he should say "We withdrew from Gaza, showing we are willing to give up land for peace. When we get peace in Gaza, we will resume negotiations. Until then, there will be no further concessions. And if we do not get peace in Gaza, we will annex it, and anyone there who does not accept Israel's right to exist as a Jewish state will be encouraged to leave."

Pathetic Mainstream Media Moment of the day, year, decade? You decide... (Hat tip: CAMERA)

A Damaging Quote Attributed to Israeli Commander Moshe Yaalon in 2002 is False - He Never Said it - Newspapers including The New York Times, The Chicago Tribune and The Boston Globe have all carried retractions or clarifications [AT LEAST 5 YEARS LATER], either disavowing the comment outright or conceding it should not have been attributed to Yaalon.

Official Toronto Star correction:

A Nov. 14, 2004, column about the death of Yasser Arafat included an unverified quotation attributed to former Israel Defense Forces chief of staff Moshe Yaalon.

Yaalon, now Israel's strategic affairs minister, was quoted in that 2004 column as saying in 2002 that "the Palestinians must be made to understand in the deepest recesses of their consciousness that they are a defeated people."

Pathetic.

Alas for poor Marx, he just didn't get it—
"All men are created equal" (as America puts it) isn't about property or stature, but opportunity and freedom to choose how to live one's own life

The only equality or property and stature, the only absolute fairness, is the grave.

Edmund Standing is returning to his pre-blogging activities. He'll be missed at Harry's Place, and here too, I reckon. His farewell post is well worth reading.

[Link: www.hurryupharry.org...]

Moving on

Edmund Standing, August 7th 2009, 10:30 am

I’ve been writing articles online since 2004, primarily for Butterflies & Wheels. Last year, I started blogging as well and exposing the racist bigotry of the British far-right quickly became a central focus. I’m sickened by the rise in racist sentiment and by the way the British National Party has managed to creep out from the shadows and into the public eye and I wanted to do something to try to show that beneath the shiny new exterior, the old hatred lives on. I hope I have contributed something of value through doing this, and my CSC report is a culmination of that work.

David T asked me to join the Harry’s Place team on the strength of my anti-fascist writing and as you know that has continued to be the primary focus of my writing here. However, for me enough is enough. There are many good writers and websites working to expose the far-right, including Searchlight, the Unity blogs, Seismic Shock, Richard Bartholomew, and Eric the Fish. After a number of months immersed in the twisted blogs and websites of the far-right, I feel it’s time to move on.

Despite many recent claims about my supposed ‘ideology’, my central commitment, and the inspiration for all my writing, is to Enlightenment values, rationalism, secularism, and humanism. Harry’s Place is a website of the Left and it is deeply concerned with the future of the Left. I’m not. I’m concerned with the future of Enlightenment values, freedom, and liberal democracy, and support all those who defend those values. I think the ‘decent Left’ is a fantastic ‘movement’, but I’m quite happy to say that I also see much of value in neo-conservatism.

Harry’s Place is also a website whose driving conviction is that it is not religion itself, but rather politicised expressions of religion that represent a threat. I’m sceptical of this, as my writings on religion elsewhere show. To my mind, for example, Islamism isn’t the only problem, the Qur’an is a problem. Likewise, the Christian Right isn’t a problem that can be disconnected from its devotion to ancient religious texts, the values of which are largely opposed to the values of the Enlightenment.

So, I’ve decided to move on from Harry’s Place, and indeed from blogging itself, and to return to writing articles on rationalism, secularism, and atheism. I’ve greatly enjoyed my time here and have the utmost respect for the entire Harry’s Place team. I wish to thank them for giving me the opportunity to write for such an excellent and prestigious website and will continue to follow the site with interest.

Thanks also to the many commenters who have supported and inspired my work here and my blogging elsewhere, and no doubt I’ll continue to see you all in the comments section as I pop by from time to time.

Edmund

You know what? I can't remember the media ever having any credibility. Bias has been blatant since the inception of the US. Maybe during the time of Uncle Walter and Watergate most people THOUGHT it was credible, but even about then we've since learned better.

You know what? I can't remember the media ever having any credibility. Bias has been blatant since the inception of the US. Maybe during the time of Uncle Walter and Watergate most people THOUGHT it was credible, but even about then we've since learned better.

there are credible members of the media here and there. but in general, the media is absolutely terrified of criticizing Obama. Their own PC filters simply won't allow any criticism of their self created savior.

French woman, embassy staff confess in Iran trial

The estimable world community is on it, though!

The French Foreign Ministry on Saturday called for the immediate release of both Reiss and embassy employee Afshar, saying that the charges against them were without basis.

The ministry statement also objected to the conditions under which Reiss and Afshar were being tried, and "deplored" that neither woman was represented by a lawyer.

Sweden, which holds the rotating presidency of the European Union, expressed concern over the trials and noted that actions against one EU country — citizen or embassy staff — is considered action against all EU member states.

Dishonesty, Slander, and Idiocy

Now this is a pas de trois of dishonesty, slander, and idiocy. Not only is Pelosi lying when she says protesters are bringing swastikas to these town halls, not only is she suggesting that American citizens are Nazis for having the effrontery to get in the way of Obamacare, but she's also saying that the alleged swastikas are obvious proof that these protests are manufactured by slick P.R. gurus.

How does that work? What public-relations genius says: "Okay, we need these protests to seem like an authentic backlash of real Americans. Make sure everyone has enough Nazi paraphernalia!"

re: #166 wahabicorridor

But what if we want to talk about carrot cake?

That's veggie, right?

My cousin sent me this, about her new doctor and how he recommends getting your quota of veggies (among other things):

Q: Doctor, I've heard that cardiovascular exercise can prolong life. Is this true?
A: Your heart is only good for so many beats, and that's it... don't waste them on exercise. Everything wears out eventually. Speeding up your heart will not make you live longer; that's like saying you can extend the life of your car by driving it faster. Want to live longer? Take a nap.

Q: Should I cut down on meat and eat more fruits and vegetables?
A: You must grasp logistical efficiencies. What does a cow eat? Hay and corn. And what are these? Vegetables. So a steak is nothing more than an efficient mechanism of delivering vegetables to your system. Need grain? Eat chicken. Beef is also a good source of field grass (green leafy vegetable). And a pork chop can give you 100% of your recommended daily allowance of vegetable products.

Q: Should I reduce my alcohol intake?
A: No, not at all. Wine is made from fruit. Brandy is distilled wine, that means they take the water out of the fruity bit so you get even more of the goodness that way. Beer is also made out of grain. Bottoms up!

Q: How can I calculate my body/fat ratio?
A: Well, if you have a body and you have fat, your ratio is one to one. If you have two bodies, your ratio is two to one, etc.

Q: What are some of the advantages of participating in a regular exercise program?
A: Can't think of a single one, sorry. My philosophy is: No Pain...Good!
Q: Aren't fried foods bad for you?
A: YOU'RE NOT LISTENING!!! ... Foods are fried these days in vegetable oil. In fact, they're permeated in it. How could getting more vegetables be bad for you?

Q: Will sit-ups help prevent me from getting a little soft around the middle?
A: Definitely not! When you exercise a muscle, it gets bigger. You should only be doing sit-ups if you want a bigger stomach.

Q: Is chocolate bad for me?
A: Are you crazy? HELLO Cocoa beans ! Another vegetable!!! It's the best feel-good food around!

Q: Is swimming good for your figure?
A: If swimming is good for your figure, explain whales to me.

Q: Is getting in-shape important for my lifestyle?
A: Hey! 'Round' is a shape!

Well, I hope this has cleared up any misconceptions you may have had about food and diets.

And remember:
'Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Chardonnay in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming 'WOO HOO, What a Ride'

AND...

For those of you who watch what you eat, here's the final word on nutrition and health. It's a relief to know the truth after all those conflicting nutritional studies.

1. The Japanese eat very little fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

2. The Mexicans eat a lot of fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

3. The Chinese drink very little red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

4. The Italians drink a lot of red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

5. The Germans drink a lot of beers and eat lots of sausages and fats and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

CONCLUSION

Eat and drink what you like. Speaking English is apparently what kills you.

Without getting into details, I recently took over a couple of restaurants.

They were losing money and I studied where they were and how they were run and knew the landlords. So I got the businesses for a song (they were about to close, so I saved them the costs of closing).

In the course of the last 3 months I have turned both locations around and they are at break even (they'd be making money but I spend all of he profits on advertising and enhancing the buildings / kitchens).

Well fundamental to that all happening was fixing the scheduling of labor. We had to reduce the labor costs and we did it by looking at the hourly flow of customers for the last year in each location and coming up with some simulations where we learned when servers needed to come to work, when busboys needed to arrive, etc. We also put in an inventory control system that I wrote (and which managed to catch a manager who was stealing - fired him).

So in the course of this effort, 68 jobs were saved (although some people got replaced for stealing / incompetence). So how do the remaining employees feel about things? They think I suck. They think I am an ass hole for reducing their hours and for firing some nice people. never mind that the air conditioning in the kitchens now work and that customers are starting to return. Never mind that the tips are going up for servers and bus boys. Never mind that they had their jobs saved and that my wife and I have worked 80+ hour weeks since may without seeing one dime of compensation.

Never mind any of that. We are just greedy assholes.

I used to be a "country club" style manager - give people responsibility, room to grow and the resources they need. This experience is turning me into a tyrant simply because I now realize how people who live in the greatest era of prosperity in human history (despite a recession) can still manage to be "working poor" - their attitude sucks and creates the very conditions that oppress them. Even as their jobs are saved and they start making more money, they insist that they are being exploited when they are, in fact, the only people benefiting from the enterprise.

/Rant off.

Beoch! They closed all the ones around me.

That's ok I'm really really really craving Tim Horton's.

They still turn the light in their sign on when the donuts have just come out of the oven.

Everywhere I've worked, and everyone I know, seems to live by the motto "Change is Bad." They can be stuck in the most awful, sickening, downright dangerous job, working for low pay and putting in crappy hours, but change it - in any way - and you're the villain. Doesn't seem to matter if the change if for the good, even if it directly benefits them - they're still going to find a way to bitch about how things aren't the way they used to be.

I'm impressed, too.
People do not notice the sacrifices and the difficulty of decisions that need to be made, nor the reasons why those decisions need to be made.

btw - have you had a meeting with staff to explain everything you just explained here? I'm sure you have. But if you haven't, you might consider it. It won't stop all the whining. But the smart ones will get it.

Why the hell did I post this to the Open Thread when this one isn't even dead yet? dohh... Ah well, at least I can fix the typo.

"Oh Karl the world isn’t fair
It isn’t and never will be
They tried out your plan
It brought misery instead
If you’d seen how they worked it
you’d be glad you were dead
just like I’m glad I’m living in the land of the free
where the rich just get richer
and the poor you don’t ever have to see
It would depress us, Karl
Because we care
that the world still isn’t fair"

Ugh, Randy... There ~is~ no other way to work it.

The Randy Newman vid in the previous thread was ok but he suffers from the misconception I suspect is shared by many others which is that Communism is good in theory but is a failure in practice. I like morality stories. Ones that begin from some principle and takes you through to its logical consequences.

Socialism comes to Twentieth Century Motors. Actually this is from the book Alas Shrugged, but it can be read as a very short morailty story in a >1000 page epic.

"From Each According To His Ability, To Each According To His Need"

Tony.

To those who have kept their jobs the recession is happening to other people. They just don't see - honest to God - that there is 12% unemployment here and that they can be replaced pretty quickly. It just does not occur to them - they don't think that way. As a result, they don't think of ways they can help improve the business.

Take cleaning for example - no restaurant can prosper without being a clean restaurant. Old ownership didn't care - wasted effort. So we have put in a cleaning program, and when things are slow we expect folks to clean their work area, be it the dining room or the food prep areas. Reaction? Well that was the time that people used to catch up on socializing. So now they stand where they used to stand to socialize and do the same thing, except each person has a towel in his/her hand as they wipe the same surface over and over. If a manager isn't there to direct the activity, the same 8 square feet of surface area gets polished to a shine while the bathrooms go unchecked and the empty boxes stack up next to the walk in refrigerators.

Anyway - I know that these are minimum wage jobs in an entry level industry. But when I was 25 years old I was obsessed with figuring out how to get ahead at work. These kids figure if they stay in the same spot and simply hold their job that they will see more money and more benefits as time goes on. And, given the rise in minimum wage in California and the benefit mandates that are in the pipeline, they are right.

We really are f***g up this country.

re: #189 Crimsonfisted

I don't think you suck! Wow! I am impressed.

Don't be.

We didn't do this just to save jobs. That was a side benefit.

I am doing this to ultimately make money. And I will.

My point was related to the whole Randy Newman theme - the idea that you can try to bring about fair only to have it turned on its head.

So life isn't fair - even when it is more than fair, many people will find a way to see it as unfair. Compared to all of time prior, we live in such a society of privilege. Very few people should complain.

re: #191 reine.de.tout

No staffwide meetings. If you call one you have to pay everyone to attend.

Word gets out, though. I took a cook to task in his kitchen the other day regarding the scheduling and basically told him "You have three choices - continue to work here under this schedule, quit and go work for one of the *many* restaurants that are hiring and will give you any schedule you ask for (heavy sarcasm), or return to the old schedule where I then shut down the restaurant and throw you and everyone else out of work because the restaurant can't make money under that schedule."

I also told him about the stack of applications I have for cooks, and named off the recently closed restaurants that the people came from.

He shut up. Is he happy? No. No one gets happier in life right after having their expectations lowered. But he and everyone else will get over it and maybe they will realize soon that they are lucky to have jobs. Whether they see that or not is their choice.

Yep, Karl had a plan.

He couln't feed his kids. He lived off other people's money. He didn't have two nickles to rub together but he hired a maid. And he screwed her.

Way to go Karl.

Because we care
that the world still isn’t fair

Lying sacks of $#;+. If they cared, they would follow Gautama and Jesus. They would give their possessions to the poor and go forth with a robe, a bowl and staff to succor the poor and the oppressed. But they don't care. They just like to preen about their superior morality.

When are people going to learn that nobody cares. They are simply not interested. They are so overwhelmed with getting through today and their own problems that they have neither the time nor the energy to care about you or your problems.

Further, I can guarantee you that no politician cares. They think you are as disposable as a dirty piece of Kleenex, and are interested in you only to the extent that you might give them money.

Finally, the Federal government really doesn’t care. It is an aggregation that has no heart and no mind. Its politician employees don’t care, I disposed of them in the previous paragraph. The civil servants have civil service and cannot be fired. They really don’t care.*

Nobody cares. Stop whining. Get over yourself. Go get a life. STFU.

*I liked the movie Seabiscuit. But, the film makers felt the need to put in a plug for their favorite political party and its greatest accomplishment — the “New Deal”. So they tossed in some 1930s Depression era photographs and added the following narration:

“They called it “relief,” but it was a lot more than that. It had dozens of names; N.R.A., W.P.A., the C.C.C. But it really came down to just one thing. For the first time in a long time, someone cared. For the first time in a long time, you were no longer alone.”

If you have been paying attention, you know that statement is a lie — a bald face lie, because No One Cares!.
