We have a President who awarded the highest civilian honor- the Medal of Freedom- to the individual who was responsible for the hate-fest that was Durban I.

Hamas and Hezbollah will continue to use their own innocent civilians as shields until the world calls them on it. So far, that does not seem to be happening. They hide behind women and children and then call out Israel when someone dies...the cowardly and despicable tactics of these "Holy Warriors" makes me want to puke.

26 Mostly sane, most of the time.  Thu, Aug 13, 2009 9:16:38am

So, to follow the logic, if Human Rights Watch seems to only report on the rights violations of some people, and completely ignores what is going on to another set of people, either the other side is not human or worth less.

I really don't like their logic.

Land for Peace, Money for Peace, Two State Solution for Peace, Pre 1967 Borders for Peace, etc, etc...It does not really matter what Israel gives up, it will never be enough for many on the Palis side. Nothing short of all the Jews packing up and leaving will suffice. How do you negotiate in good faith with that mindset? And, why would you want to negotiate with people like that? What has it gotten Israel? Every concession brings more pain, not less.

HRW was never in any danger of changing. They called a foul on the Palestinians for lobbing rockets into civilian Israeli territory, and they perpetually demonize Israel.

They still miss the elephant in the room. They consistently ignore the plight of the Palestinians not at the hands of Israel, but at the hands of their own ruling class. It's a glaring omission not just by HRW but by practically the entire 'establishment' involved in the I/P conflict on both the intellectual playing field and by actual forces involved in crafting policy. Until the onus is put on Palestinians to reform their ways, and build a healthy respect for the lives of their own people, there will be no peace and no possible respect for outsiders.

So...I actually went out to HRW, just to see for myself.

Their front page has six equally divided parts. There are seven continents, and I'll give them a pass on ignoring abuse of whatever it is that actually lives in Antarctica. As I learned it in school, the six continents are: Europe, Asia, Africa, North America, South America, and Australia.

They have: United States, Africa, Middle East/N. Africa, Europe/Central Asia, Americas, and Asia.

We are so bad we get our own section. China and Myanmar and Thailand are get shoved in together, but the wicked US gets its own section. The Congo and Sudan and Nigeria and Zimbabwe are all bundled together--must not be a lot going on there.

Did you know there is still corporal punishment going on in US schools? In a world with the Sudan in it, this merits its own report. I'll bet those kids in Africa who get beaten in their Madrassahs are glad Human Rights is using resources to report this.

Ugh.

HRW takes a very narrow focus on human rights. Other humans don't get cited very often for violating human rights. Governments get cited. And since the PLO isn't much of a government, it rarely gets cited.

This is what happens when tackling problems from a bureaucratic perspective. That's HRW.

Even the World Archaeological Congress excludes Israel from a conference.

The World Archaeological Congress (WAC), presently convening a conference of archaeologists from all over the world, has excluded Israel even though the conference is taking place in Ramallah.

The congress, entitled "Overcoming Structural Violence", did not invite the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) despite the fact that some of the topics being discussed at the conference deal with regions in Jerusalem where an archaeological excavation is being conducted exclusively by the IAA.

As I learned it in school, the six continents are: Europe, Asia, Africa, North America, South America, and Australia.

They have: United States, Africa, Middle East/N. Africa, Europe/Central Asia, Americas, and Asia.

And the United Nations have: African Group, Asian Group, Eastern European Group, Latin American and Caribbean Group, Western European and Others Group.

When the international order is messed up, no surprise that the order of some nongovernmental organization is in the same state, although in a different kind of mess.

(Is there a need to mention which country is not accepted to any of these regional groups?)

So as to not to detract from the Les Paul thread.

U.S. Marines Fight House-to-House in Afghan Taliban Stronghold

*snip*

The Marines are going house to house, they’re going compound to compound to make sure that there are no militants remaining and they’re doing it while the Taliban that the Marines didn’t kill yesterday try to kill these Marines today.

Where does Canada go? I noticed that Canada and Australia, apparently, have no human rights issues.

Actually, the Western European and Others group took Israel a few years ago, although I don't think Israel has full rights yet.

That's because Canada has Human Rights Tribunals to protect us.

I read yesterday that the Taliban decided to stand and fight instead of running away as usual. Not a healthy decision when it's the US Marines coming at you.

Let's see... This blog is about anti-idiotarianism. Creationists, Nirthers, crackpots and tools are all idiotarians. Ergo, they are relevant to Charles's interest - and isn't that whose interest matters? The rest of us are just along for the ride. As Shar mentioned, feel free to start your own blog if you don't like what Charles has to say.

re: #104 neoconundrum

I think the creationism and nut-job threads are relevant and important.

Sharmuta, et al,

Just out of curiosity, what is it about creationists do you find relevant and important? Whether one believes we evolved from living organisms or was placed here by a supernatural power doesn't seem to me to be a major public issue. Don't we have freedom of religion here in the US?

Personally, I find our $1.5 Trillion deficit, our cozying-up to despots, and government-run health care to be more important.

The issue is whether a specific religion's beliefs should be taught as reality in our schools. The future is only one generation deep, and a science class should contain only science.

re: #104 neoconundrum

Might be wasting my breath/keystrokes but it is not what the Creationists "think" that is worrisome. In this country, you are free to think what you want. If your belief system is that the universe was sneezed into existence or came about through some other ejaculatory means, then you are welcome to purse that belief system.

But, when you try and have that belief system taught as science in public schools, as science is defined, then then you run afoul of the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment. You begin to set a very bad precedent which, given that demographics are not fixed in stone, may one day return to bite us in the proverbial ass.

EmmmieG,

Thanks for the reply. Perhaps I'm not totally up-to-date on the issue, but are you saying there are public schools that REFUSE to teach evolution?

No, there are groups that are trying to get creationism taught in a science class. I think you know this.

Religion belongs in a religious class. I have no problem with religious classes--all of my children are in them--but not in a public school.

And by the way, yes, there absolutely ARE fundamentalist teachers in this country who refuse to teach evolution -- a shockingly high number of them, in fact.

Nope. it isn't. But when the town is a major trade center as well as controlling access to a strategic pass they need, they don't really have much of a choice. They will lose of course, but they will try. I just hope that we don't lose any of our boys.

Charles,

Thanks. I had no idea there were public school teachers who refuse to teach science in science class. I know in my hebrew school class, we were taught the Earth was created in 6 days!

I'm just trying to understand the issue. I know these threads appear a lot, but I wasn't sure why.

In my Hebrew class, the teacher said that one way of reconciling Bereshit with science is that the "days" aren't our days, and since the Sun wasn't even made on the first day, they probably weren't.

(Bereshit = usually translated as "in the beginning", is the proper Hebrew name for Genesis.)

Although I doubt she was planning to go into the Kabbalistic interpretation, which has "G-d's days", and determined the age of the universe at around 15 billion years.

Millions of Arabs live under totalitarian regimes, but we hear zip about their human rights.

Even if NGO's like HWR were to upgrade to moral equivalency and proportionality, we'd hear 28 stories about human rights abuses in Arab lands for each abuse in the disputed territories.
