I've just had an "Ah HA!" moment insight about the whole health care thing. Maybe it's not an insight at all, I dunno -- maybe everyone already realizes it. But all I can say it that it just now occurred to me.

The goal of Obama's health care plan is not to provide coverage for everyone; no, the goal is to redistribute wealth. Obama and the Democrats are saying that tax increases on well-off Americans might be an unavoidable and regretful side-effect of this necessary bill. But I see now that the tax increases are the original goal -- whereas the health care universal coverage simply serves as a justification for taking away well-off people's money and giving it to the less well-off.

The reason this occurred to me was that I got to remembering a dot-com era experience I had. In the late '90s, I was sort of involved in a startup that was making a Web app that required a lot of bits to be transferred to the user. This was "a lot of" in late '90s terms -- an era when most people still had dial-up connections, and broadband was about 5% of the market.

A serious question arose: If our app requires a lot of bits to be transferred, and only 5% of the population has broadband, then really our app can only be used by 5% of computer users, which was really limiting. How was it ever going to get popular with such a small potential user base?

Well, the "money guy" turned this problem completely upside-down, and in his crazed money-guy salesman persona, he rephrased the problem like so when trying to pitch investors:

"The great thing about our product is that it drives the need for broadband. People will have to get broadband in order to use our product. And since our product will be so great, everyone's going to want to use it! But here's how it benefits you, the venture capitalist investor: not only will you make money on this one particular app, but its very existence will drive the need for everyone to get broadband, and since some of your other tech investments also rely on a wide broadband user base, we'll be growing the market share for your other investments as well!"

He was absolutely convinced this was a great pitch, so much so that he seemed to believe the schpiel himself. However, most of the rest of us were very skeptical. It's one thing to be "counterintuitive," and quite another to base your entire business model on re-casting an intractable problem as instead a blessing.

Needless to say, the whole startup -- like most startups -- failed to achieve liftoff, and mostly crashed and burned. (Though it continues to live on in various altered forms -- but that's a different story.)

Anyway. I just now suddenly saw the parallel between our cockamamie fundraising strategy and the actual purpose of the health care plan. Just as our app was going to "drive the need" for mass adoption of broadband, funding universal health care will "drive the need" for tax increases.

In the exact same way that our money guy misrepresented the issue by looking at it from the opposite angle, Obama is misrepresenting his true goal by presenting it to us backwards.

Hence, our flawed product was explained thusly: "The goal is to give people a motivation to buy broadband Internet service. Right? And the way to do that is create applications that can only be used with broadband! So, to solve this problem, we've create a broadband-only app! Brilliant!" Of course the real goal was to trick investors into giving us money.

Similarly, Obama is saying, "The goal is to give everybody health care coverage. Yes, there is an unwanted side effect of needing to raise taxes to pay for it, but the goal is so excellent that we can endure this minor and regretful side issue." Of course the real goal is to trick taxpayers into raising their own taxes; getting us into massive debt to fund a boondoggle health care scheme is just a way to justify the true original goal, which is to redistribute wealth by taxing it the top half of the country and essentially giving it to the bottom half in the form of free medical care.

Quite a few people I know have either recently, are currently, or in the near future, plan to move to San Francisco (not just the "Bay Area" but SF City itself). Taking the moonbat concentration out of the equation for a second, I cant see why anyone thinks moving from a city not in the Top 10 least affordable, to the one that is #2 in the country, in this economy... when they aren't independently wealthy... is a good idea. I just cant.

They all range from slightly lefty to flaming moonbat... is there a moonbat magnet in the town that overcomes their income?

I will also toot my own, riding on your ccoattails. I see this as a direct result of what I call "The Jimjams Effect." Prior to my Jimjams activism, SFGate was dominated by moonbat commenters, aided by sinister admins with a sinister trick. After I exposed them big-time and it got picked up by nearly all the blogs, SFGate had to unban thousands of conservative and skeptical commenters. Suddenly, overnight the character of the site changed, and now most left-biased MSM-type articles have majority snark/neocon comments. It's like the veil was lifted.

It's not *that* unaffordable. You just can't expect to have a 3 bedroom, single-family house. I don't. I have 1,100 sq. feet of lower unit duplex condo w/o garage (though parking isn't really a problem). If you forego impulse purchases of lattes, frou frou snack food, and regular dining out, there is quite a bit to do and see that's cheap or free. We don't have winter or summer, but you can go skiing 4 hours east of here. You can go hiking year round. There are all kinds of cultural events. The drugs are surprisingly cheap for the quality. Hell, you can pick magic mushrooms in both Golden Gate Park and the Presidio.

We're a city at the tip of a peninsula you dumbass, not a suburb surrounded by land on all sides. There are homes with yards - front and back - and they're expensive. I have a 25x50 backyard and I'm quite fine with it (as is the cat). We're a whole lot less urban than Manhattan or downtown Chicago.

Another thing, I wouldn't like being out on that narrow peninsula without any escape routes when The Big One® hits again. Stuck in the middle of 1 million panicing people, possibly with no water, power, food, etc.

That stuff very nearly keeps me up at night out in the suburbs down here as it is, where I have plenty of escape routes and the S.A. Fault is about 200 miles away.

My first time in Munich meeting locals (as opposed to spending the night with my girlfriend at the time), I was in a goth club and struck up a conversation with a guy originally from Dresden. He spoke ok English and had lived 9 months in So. Carolina working for BMW, which he loved (So. Car. too). Anyway, he said that America is awesome because it's not as structured as Germany. He then asked why we -- the Allies had to bomb Dresden 6 weeks before the end of WWII, though he made it clear that he realized it was a British-led effort. (Note, downed American pilots had it much easier, although not easy per se, than British pilots, which I surmise is because the Germans found the British night terror bombing reprehensible compared to American daylight strategic bombing.) Anyway, I shrugged my shoulders and said, "I don't care." He was amazed and asked me how I could not care about bombing innocent people in a non-military city. I answered him in German: "Ich bin Jude" -- I am Jewish. He nearly flipped out and profusely apologized, saying he understood, he was sorry, and to make this relevant "Hitler wasn't German, he was from Austria!", which I knew. Still, whenever I discuss WWII with people and they bash the bombing campaign because of its inhumanity, I tell them to do a thought experiment and die of disease in Auschwitz, if they get that far.

Quite a few people I know have either recently, are currently, or in the near future, plan to move to San Francisco (not just the "Bay Area" but SF City itself). Taking the moonbat concentration out of the equation for a second, I cant see why anyone thinks moving from a city not in the Top 10 least affordable, to the one that is #2 in the country, in this economy... when they aren't independently wealthy... is a good idea. Over the past few years NR/NRO has moved from leading the discussion to being more of me-too venue for those who want the label of "conservative" applied to them.

Yeah, Buckley sort of singlehandedly rebuilt the conservative movement and made it not just intellectually reputable but also kind of cool, really.

Now, -- I can only speak for NRO/the Corner, not the print mag-- it's a shambles. Saying it's "me-too" almost dignifies it. These are people who are publishing intellectual frauds like Jonah Goldberg and nirther shills like Andy McCarthy. I read it, but I read it to mock it, and it makes me cringe.

BTW, is American Conservative any good? Anyone know?

I asked because they publish Daniel Larison, who to my mind is one of the best conservative writers around (though not yet much heard of). I only read him over there.

I'd really like some respectable center/right things to read. they all seem to have collapsed in the last couple of years.
